NVIDIA on Thursday announced better than expected earnings for Q3 2011 thanks in large part to a rise in smartphone and tablet sales via their Tegra 2 processor.

Revenue for the company during Q3 was $1.07 billion, up 4.9 percent from Q2 2011 earning and 26.3 percent over the same period last year when the company took in $843.9 million.

According to Electronista the company’s Consumer Products Group saw the largest revenue increase by percentage with sales up 14% since Spring 2011.

With the company performing better than expected stock prices for NVIDIA increased by 5% even as graphics chips for PCs only grew by one percent from the previous quarter as PC sales have stalled while consumers gravitate towards the PC and Smartphone market in the United States.

NVIDIA also saw a 9.5% increase in their Professional Solutions division which creates Quadro and Tesla graphics chips for workstations.

In Q3 2011 the company saw their processors used on three more Smartphones bringing their total to 11 top devices while they also announced support for their chipsets on 13 new tablets for a total of 23 Tegra supported devices.

In other news the company has announced that 18,000 Nvidia Tesla processors will be used in the creation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Titan supercomputer.

Does it surprise you to learn that NVIDIA has seen such a large increase in mobile and tablet processor sales?

NVIDIA is expected to make a larger push on their 3D Vision platform at this year’s Computex by offering a pair of wired LCD active shutter 3D glasses.

The new glasses reduce price by adding a 10-foot USB cable to the mix while ditching IR sync tech glasses that also require batteries to operate. For the pain of USB use the glasses do provide a cheaper price point and do not require batteries.

The push probably won’t be great for watching movies and 3D TV with your friends however the company can use the technology to push a cheaper alternative for PC gaming or watching a Blu-ray 3D movie on a users laptop.

The cost for the new eye-wear is just $99, that’s a $50 savings over the wireless price of $149, while the amount saved in batteries will push the savings even higher.

The new option will go on sale in “late June.”

The Tesla Roadster S Model won’t go into production for a while, but that didn’t stop computer company NVIDIA from showing off the tech they’ve built into the car.

Specifically NVIDIA had the Tesla Roadster on display to show off their massive Touchscreen which takes up a third of the cars available dashboard space. Think of the touchscreen interface as the central nervous system for the car and it becomes quickly clear why it’s so important.

If you could care less about technology, you can at least appreciate the very sleek design the car offers, it shouts Tesla from every angle and right through the sleek paint job.

Here’s a picture of the NVIDIA touchscreen:

One of my favorite parts about CES is the lengths company’s will go to in order to show off their products. NVIDIA wants everyone at the CES 2011 show to realize that there are more than 350 games currently available for 3D gaming and to do so they put together a wall of TVs with previews of various 3D titles.

The wall (pictured above) is made up of 20 TVs courtesy of Acer who provided their 27″ HN274H 3D Displays for the project.

The first thing I noticed about the games and graphics? The games were awesome and the 3D capabilities of those games were brought to life thanks to NVIDIA.

Nothing really technical to say for this post, just that I highly recommend using a NVIDIA 3D Vision setup if you want to get the most out of your 3D gaming.

nVidia has just announced at the Siggraph academic graphic conference today in Los Angeles the new line of Quadro workstation graphics cards that are based around the Fermi graphics chip. Coupled with the company’s 3D Vision Pro glasses these workstations can be used by engineers to gain a new perspective on their creations.

The new Quadro graphics cards can perform five times faster on 3D applications and run up to eight times faster for computational simulations compared to Nvidia’s last generation of Quadro products. The Quadro 6000 can process 1.3 billion triangles per second. That means it can set up a 3D scene extremely fast. Nvidia has been making Quadro graphics workstation products for more than a decade, and it has a five to 10 times lead in unit sales on Advanced Micro Devices at any given time. As it climbs up the computing ladder, Nvidia is adding new capabilities such as error correction codes memory and IEEE double-precision floating point performance. Those features matter to scientists and engineers working on problems in medical imaging, finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics.

Special effects firm Industrial Light & Magic is already using the Quadro graphics chips and is seeing improvements of 10 to 15 times in its processing of animated film scenes that include complex images such as dust, fire, and air simulations, said Olivier Maury, a research and development engineer at ILM, which was started by Star Wars film maker George Lucas. Nvidia is also providing the software that the graphics hardware needs to make big advances in graphics processing, said Rob Enderle, analyst at the Enderle Group.

Source: VentureBeat

As cool as this might all sound you can bet that these video cards aren’t something you are going to see on your desktop anytime soon, unless of course you have lots of money to fork out. The most basic of these cards are going to set you back a minimum of $1,199 for the Quadro 4000 but if you are feeling really rich you can fork over $14,500 for the Quadro Plex 7000.

By now anyone who is a gadget-head will have heard the news that nVidia has finally debuted its next generation graphics card sporting the the GeForce GTX 400 series, also known by the codename Fermi. While it was first announced around six months ago manufacturing problems delayed its release until now.

For now nVidia is aiming the new card at the high-end gamer market which considering the hefty price tag; $349.00 to $499.00, that goes with the cards but it shouldn’t be long before we start seeing them trickle down to a more reasonably price. In order to show off the new cards and their support of DirectX 11 the company put together a nice little video with some background on the new cards and what we can expect from them.

Acer has ordered a bunch of NVIDIA Ion 2 processors for use in their nettops and netbooks which will be paired with the Intel Pine Trail Atom platform.

According to tipsters at DigiTimes the systems most likely to get the new setup include the Acer AspireRevo line and higher end Aspire Ones which tend to cater to heavy users who are willing to spend more money on state of the art systems.

Unlike typical processors with built-in memory controllers, the Ion 2 chipset is said to behave like a dedicated video chip, a fact that makes it run faster and which will unmarry NVIDIA’s chipset from Atom processors.
NVIDIA just announced their newest GPU the NVIDIA GeForce 310 an entry level graphics processor that replaces the users standard integrated graphics card.

The GeForce 310 offers a 589MHz processor with 512MB DDR2 Memory at 500MHz, while also featuring DisplayPort, DVI and a VGA port, two of which can be converted with a simple adapter to HDMI outputs.

While the card is able to push out enough power for hardware accelerated 1080p high def video, it’s probably not going to be enough for discerning PC gamers looking for a powerful solution for their gaming needs.

It looks like nVidia; the graphics card manufacturer, is going to be changing the graphics card landscape in the next couple of months. This shake-up will come at the hands of their new GT300 the successor to their GT200 series of graphic cards and will be coming with a totally new architecture.

According to the folks at Bright Side Of News is one of the reasons that nVidia’s Chief Architect Bill Dally turned down Intel’s offer to come and work for them on their Larrabee project. In their post they go into the real technical details; up to what they have been able to piece together anyway, but it boils down to this.

The GT300 will utilize a core set that uses MIMD-similar functions (Multiple-Instruction Multiple Date) rather than the current SIMD (Single-Instruction Multiple Data) structure. These cards; in MPMD mode, will be able to execute simple and complex shader and computing operations on-the-go. The GT300 itself will pack 16 groups with 32 cores (512 cores for the high-end part) and as a result raises the computing power of the GT300 by more than 2x when compared to the GT200 core.

As an example if nVidia gets a 2 GHz clock for the 512 MIMD cores, we are looking at no less than 3TFLOPS with Single Precision. The goodness doesn’t stop there

This is not the only change – cluster organization is no longer static. The Scratch Cache is much more granular and allows for larger interactivity between the cores inside the cluster. GPGPU e.g. GPU Computing applications should really benefit from this architectural choice. When it comes to gaming, the question is obviously – how good can GT300 be? Please do bear in mind that this 32-core cluster will be used in next-generation Tegra, Tesla, GeForce and Quadro cards.

This architectural change should result in dramatic increase in Dual-Precision performance, and if GT300 packs enough registers – performance of both Single-Precision and Dual-Precision data might surprise all the players in the industry. Given the timeline when nVidia begun work on GT300, it looks to us like GT200 architecture was a test for real things coming in 2009.

Source: Bright Side of News

Chances are that these beauties are going to hurt the wallet when they first come out but hopefully by the time I’m ready to upgrade my video card again they will have come down in price.
