Quite a few people want a tablet. Quite a few people want a notebook. But what if you want the best of both Worlds? It seems Lenovo who makes desktop PC’s, laptops, and tablets, is merging the two together in a notebook called the Yoga.

When I first read the name, I thought it was some sort of online yoga service that they were coming out with which didn’t sound right and thankfully, they’re not. The Yoga gets it’s name because while having a touchscreen display, it also can swing a full 360 degrees.

The Lenovo Yoga is just 0.67 inches thick which, when folded into a tablet, is around double the size of many tablets out on the marketplace.

Via TechNewsWorld:

“The Ultrabook, which will run on Windows 8, can be opened and folded back on itself to be used as a tablet or e-reader with touchscreen capabilities. It can also be propped up like a tent for a better video watching experience, for example, or used as a traditional laptop.”

Being that it will run Windows 8, that means it won’t be out until the second half of the year. The new OS from Microsoft is said to work just as well on tablets as it does on desktop computers and laptops. Being that this notebook from Lenovo is a hybrid of sorts, it should (potentially) shine.

Specs:

13.3 inch display

1600×900 resolution

Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor

Up to 256GB SSD drive

Up to 8GB RAM

Up to 8 hours of battery life

USB 2.0, 3.0 ports as well as a full SD card slot and HDMI out

3.1 pounds

Pricing starts at $1,199 for the base model. Can you see yourself buying an ultrabook like what Lenovo has here?

Macbook Air buyers could be met with shortage issues in the near future after one of the company’s parts suppliers was forced to temporarily shut down part of their operations center this week over pollution concerns in eastern China.

Local government officials ordered the shutdown after residents complained of a foul odor coming from the complex.

Catcher Technology makes the casing for the MacBook Air and also supplies Smartphone components to various companies.

Speaking about the temporary shutdown Catcher Technologies president Allen Horng said:

“Shipments to our customers will inevitably be affected. We already asked them to make adjustments to their (casings) procurement.”

Horng also revealed that Catcher is not sure when they will be able to resume operations and that shipments from the company in October will be down by 20 percent and possibly by 40 percent in November.

The plant is partially functioning however government officials must inspect the facility before they can green light full production.

Apple customers should at least slightly feel the effects of the plants problems since Apple discontinued their plastic MacBook Air casings in 2010 following the success of the casings made by Catcher Technology.

According to Electronista:

The complaints may also reinforce allegations that Apple uses known polluters as suppliers. Apple has been resistant to address or even acknowledge the problem; the company has even refused to share the names of suppliers, despite many of them being well-known to analysts, NGOs and the media. Over 20 Apple suppliers are thought to be guilty of breaking environmental laws in recent years.

Considering the high cost of ownership associated with Apple products I personally think they need to look for company’s that follow more stringent pollution guidelines. Do you think Apple needs to be more responsible with how their products are made?

“Toasted” is a word that sounds way better when paired with “marshmallow” or “coconut” than “skin.”

“Toasted skin syndrome” isn’t new- tradesmen like glassblowers and iron workers used to get it occupationally- but now that people are increasingly using lap-based electronic devices, the skin condition is appearing again. It’s characterized by a mottled, sponge-like discoloration that often presents on the thigh area, a place where people tend to rest their electronics. While burns are a bit easier to avoid, “toasted skin syndrome” results from long-term, lower intensity heat exposure, and thusly may not be as easy to prevent.

Ten cases of the condition have been reported in medical journals in the past decade, and WebMD describes what is also being called “laptop-induced dermatosis”:

Researchers from Switzerland, reporting in the Nov. 5 issue of Pediatrics, focus on the case of a 12-year-old boy who developed a sponge-patterned discoloration on his left thigh after playing computer games with his laptop resting on his upper legs a few hours per day for several months.

“He recognized that the laptop got hot on the left side,” the researchers write. “However, regardless of that, he did not change its position.”

Doctors say the condition is seen more frequently on the left side of the body because power supplies and batteries are often located in that area. And while the syndrome is generally harmless (if creepy sounding) there is a small risk that it can develop into skin cancer. No cases of skin cancer linked to the condition have been recorded, but doctors advise using a lap desk or carrier bag to diffuse heat generated by personal electronics.

Does anyone else feel like they’ve been reading fanfiction on the iPad since the summer and now we’ve gotten the book canon and don’t know what to make of it?

I’ll admit it up front- I’m a reluctant ex-switcher. I needed more power than my dinky yet beloved iBook could provide and got a Dell last March. My life has been hellacious since. In addition to pieces beginning to fall off the thing almost immediately, it’s slow, ugly and doesn’t charge. My iBook had problems exactly twice- once when my ex stompled on it while I slept and once when my daughter accidentally pitched it onto a concrete floor. Part of why Apple has such a loyal fanbase is that their products suck way less than the competition. If I were a dude, I’d rather clap my dick shut in this very laptop than ever purchase another Dell. But enough about how Dell blows.

So, the iPad. Let’s get the collective giggling out of the way. Ha ha ha iTampon ha ha. Kotex hurr. Off the bat it’s a ridicucrunkulous name, and although it’s in line with the iPod line of MP3 domination, it sucks on its own. For a long time, women will not be able to parse the new Apple tablet from an aesthetically pleasing white cord emanating from their hoo-has. Silly Apple. Now on to the specs, and I shall partially be cribbing off of James from earlier, thanks dude.

Price

Okay, so this was a shocker- while most priced the iPad speculatively at between 800-1200 clams, some as high as 1800, the actual product came in at the unJobsworthy price of $499 to start, $829 at the high end. The entry level iPad’s rocking an unimpressive 16GB of memory, with 64GB on the high end. I anticipate this will be the most, if not one of the most, talked about aspects of the JesusSlate.

No camera

Not for shooting, not for webcam sex, this baby’s totally blind on the cam front. Bummer.

Accelerometer & digital compass

I have no idea what the first one is, and no idea what the point is with the second.

Speaker & microphone

…for ugly people who want to have remote sex. Isn’t technology fabulous?

Size and battery life

9.7-inch display, half an inch thick. 10 hours of use with a month of standby.

Arsenic, BFR, PVC and Mercury Free

Like you all give a frick. You know you’d have bought it even if every time you checked your e-mail a baby seal died and the device tore a hole in the ozone layer, you great big bunch of slacktivists.

How do I get to the internet on it?

Wi-fi and a 3g package at $29.99 a month for “unlimited usage.” Oh, plus 3G models will run you an extra $130 to start, on top of the price of your tablet. So, if you wanna run 3G on your iPad in year one alone it will cost you at least $490. Burn.

Watch out Amazon

It looks like Apple’s ready to crack the e-publishing industry wide open, like it sort of did by getting everyone to start paying for music again sometimes with iTunes. Let’s face it, while I dig the Kindle app for iPhone, the efforts with magazines and newspapers have been anemic at best, and it seems like Apple might be setting up shop in that underserved market. Instead of a boring old list, the iPad will present your books on a picture of a wooden shelf, which might warrant the $499 price tag all by its lonesome. I’d like to check out the iBooks app in depth before I pee all over it or declare it better than Jack White sex.

Overall, it’s unlocked (screw you, AT&T!), cheap for what it is, and Apple made it. While the critiques are coming fast and furious right now, I think this thing is going to find its niche immediately and dig in with claws. No one owns one yet, so we’ll have to make do with the clip below to give it a once over before the overnight lining up at the Apple store begins.

Acer has ordered a bunch of NVIDIA Ion 2 processors for use in their nettops and netbooks which will be paired with the Intel Pine Trail Atom platform.

According to tipsters at DigiTimes the systems most likely to get the new setup include the Acer AspireRevo line and higher end Aspire Ones which tend to cater to heavy users who are willing to spend more money on state of the art systems.

Unlike typical processors with built-in memory controllers, the Ion 2 chipset is said to behave like a dedicated video chip, a fact that makes it run faster and which will unmarry NVIDIA’s chipset from Atom processors.
The unit is super thin with a lid that is reported to open by swiping a single finger across a touch sensor located on the top part of the notebook lid. While the notebook is also covered with a nice brushed aluminum casing and tilts at a specific angle when opened.

It’s beginning…the dawn of Windows 7 and Dell customers in Australia are reaping the rewards today with the release of the Dell Inspiron 13z utraportable notebooks.

The devices feature a 13.3 inch display that outputs at HD resolutions of 1366 x 768 with an LED backlit screen. They also come equipped with the high-end Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, 2GB RAM with upgrades available up to 4GB and storage that ranges from 160GB to 500GB HDD’s. No word yet if a SSD will eventually be available.

The NVIDIA GeForce G105M GPU is also available, however the standard option is the Intel based GMA X4500MHD offering.

Personally I would place my bets on the 8 cell battery that comes optional and provides 11 hours of runtime, however budget conscience users will still get 5 hours out of the standard included 4 cell power adapter. [Dell]

Update: The unit also provides an integrated optical drive and built-in WiFi. Bluetooth users can also upgrade to receive that option at an additional cost.

Unit pricing for Australian buyers has also been released at AU$1,199 with an expected U.S. price of $1,100.

With the Dell Adamo XPS about to hit store shelves it looks like Dell wants to keep their Dell Adamo Desire series in the running for at least a few sales. The Desire series has just announced some welcomed spec adjustments that should put a smile on the face of high end users.

The original Desire series announced in July featured a 1.4GHz CPU, 128GB SSD and sigh, Windows Vista. Now they’ll be equipped with a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor, 256GB Solid State Disc (SSD) and a welcomed 4GB RAM of the DDR3 sorts.

Dell will also be throwing in the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium and the best part, they’ll be keeping the original $2,299 found on the lower spec’d devices.

It’s a great deal, but honestly it just makes me want the Dell Adamo XPS even more with it’s .39 inches of thickness. Either way the new units are a welcomed and rather cheap edition considering what you’ll get for your money. [SlipperyBrick]

The team at Dell revealed their new Dell Adamo XPS notebook today and it looks to overtake the MacBook Air as the thinnest laptop on the market.

Unfortunately the device was only shown for a moment before it was tucked away with no other details provided at this time. It does however look like the unit uses a new way of flipping open which in turn allows Dell to thin out the overall design.

We’ll update everyone with official Adamo XPS specs as soon as Dell releases them.

The displays are also LED backlit and all 5 units feature an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. There are also some differences between models, for example the R580 and R560 units come equipped with 15.6″ displays, while the R480 and R460 notebooks offer 14″ displays and the remaining R380 is the smallest display in the series with a 13.3″ surface.

The higher end R580 and R480 units also offers a stylish design that’s missing from the other units.

No pricing as of yet, but the units are expected for sale by months end. [via SlipperyBrick]
