Thousands of Norwegians gathered in Oslo on Thursday to sing a song to Anders Behring Breivik. Why? As a peaceful protest organized on Facebook to fight against the horror he caused Norway on July 22, 2011.

The song, titled, “Children of the Rainbow,” was written by Lillebjoern Nilsen, who Breivik has called a Marxist who is involved in the, “brainwashing of Norwegian pupils.”

In order to reclaim the song, 40,000 Norwegians gathered, along with cultural ministers from nearby Nordic countries to sing in front of the courthouse where Breivik is being tried.

Norwegian Culture Minister Anniken Huitfeldt admitted to the AFP that she cried as Nilsen directed the huge crowd in singing the song, which includes the following lyrics:

“Together, we will live, each sister and each brother, small children of the rainbow and a green earth.”

Among the thousands were young school children and elderly people in wheelchairs. They arrived at Youngstorget Square, next to the court house where Breivik’s trial is currently underway.

Most of the participants wore colorful raincoats and carried Norwegian flags and roses, the symbols that have become Norway’s peaceful response to the horrifying massacre last year.

Lill Hjoennevaag, who helped to start a Facebook campaign last Friday, which called on the public to “reclaim the song” following Breivik’s response to it. The group helped organize the 40k singers outside the courthouse. Following the song, protesters slowly moved forward to place roses and flags at the base of the courthouse.

Hjoennevaag told AFP that, “The turnout was far better than I had expected.”

As the peaceful protesters sang the song outside, Anders Behring Breivik was forced to listen to testimonies of the massacre’s survivors, including Anne Helene Lund, a 24 year old who was forced out of a tower housing the prime minister’s offices when a bomb Breivik had made exploded.

Breivik is on trial for the deaths of 77 people, the majority of which were teenagers attending a Labour Party youth camp. 69 people were shot at the camp, and the rest died as a result of the blast.

While Breivik does admit that he was behind the attacks, he refuses to plead guilty, following a notion that he was doing what is best for Norway by wiping out the Labour Party’s continued “ multicultural experiment” and the “Muslim invasion” of Norway and Europe.
