According to Gaming Age The Artist Jack Russell dog Uggie is making his rounds in Hollywood! First he was all what we could talk about at the Golden Globes, and now he’s the new spokesperson for Nintendo.

Nintendo of America announced that Uggie will be the face of responsible Responsible Pet Ownership Month (as well as nintendogs + cats). He will be biting into a hefty campaign starting today by supporting interactive fun of nintendogs. Uggie will shine a light on the fun involved in the games and how you can maintain a healthy relationship with pets.

“Uggie didn’t have to sit up and beg for his role as Nintendo’s spokesdog,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “It’s truly our pleasure to work with a star of Uggie’s magnitude, especially to help animal lovers and portable gaming fans discover the fun of nintendogs + cats.”

Although Uggie’s owner Omar Von Muller announced that he was going to retire after the awards season, the opportunity was too good to be true. As the Nintendo spokesperson the pooch will stand alongside his owner to promote nintendogs + cats and the Pearl Pink Nintendo 3DS system. The features come with wireless capabilities and entertainment experiences enjoyed in 3D with the right glasses, of course.

The last we heard from a beloved Jack Russell was on the hit sitcom Frasier. With this new announcement do you think Uggie will take on more projects in film or commercials? Weigh in!

This news should be causing more than a few smiles in Redmond as the news that the Xbox 360 beat out Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s Playstation 3 when it comes to worldwide sales for the first time ever.

It’s old news for for the Microsoft gaming console to beat out its competition nationally but it has never bested either one of them, let alone both, in the global gaming console marketplace.

The news of this champagne popping news came after Sony released its earning report yesterday which showed that the company had only sold 6.5 million units worldwide over the holiday quarter and when it combined with Nintendo’s sales of only 5.6 million for the Wii in the same quarter it showed both companies coming in behind Xbox 360′s sales of 8.2 million.

Now according to the team over at GeekWire this is the first time since 2006 that Xbox has lead worldwide holiday sales which is the same time that both the PS3 and Wii were just being launched.

Here’s the bigger news: The Xbox 360′s strong holiday quarter also put the Microsoft console ahead in worldwide sales globally for the full year of 2011, with 14.9 million units sold, compared with 14.1 million for the PS3 and 10.33 million for the Wii.

According to our data, compiled from historical earnings reports, it’s first time the Xbox 360 has topped the worldwide console market for a full year of head-to-head competition with the PS3 and Wii.

via GeekWire

Congrats to Microsoft and the Xbox team.

Resident Evil Revelations hasn’t even had the chance to be released at retailers yet in North America, and yet Capcom is already dropping the price.

The game was originally announced to retail for $49.99, which is $10 above the standard price for Nintendo 3DS games. Capcom said at the time that the reason behind the $49.99 price tag for Resident Evil Revelations had to do with the 4GB cartridge the game uses, which is 2GB higher than your standard 3DS game.

Despite this, Capcom decided to go ahead and drop the price down to $39.99 anyway, nearly a week ahead of the game’s release in North America. Capcom’s Brett Elston explained in a post over on Capcom Unity:

“Late last year we announced the console-sized adventure that is Resident Evil Revelations would arrive on a 4GB card instead of the standard 2GB card; this increase in memory size led to an increase in price as well, raising the retail cost to $49.99. And while we’re confident in the game’s value at that price (and the reviews reflect that sentiment as well), we’re also exceedingly pleased to say that after weeks of effort, we’ve been able to lower the price to $39.99.

“Since the announcement of the $49.99 price point, we’ve spent weeks looking for a way to bring your cost down to standard 3DS pricing. Today we can finally confirm we were successful in this, and hope the reduced price encourages even more people to check out this strong entry in the Resident Evil canon.”

Do you plan to pick up Resident Evil Revelations on the Nintendo 3DS?

Nintendo, while not having the greatest 2011 as evidenced by their results, does have high hopes for the Wii U. Frankly, the company is betting everything on this next generation gaming console that’s rumored to even be twice as powerful as the Xbox 360.

The company’s chief plans on doing the launch right and make it a great success for the company. The console will be available this holiday shopping season, similar to how they launched the original Wii which went on to be big money maker for the company. In fact, for a while there, it was the best selling console and would routinely beat out the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Via ABC News:

“Iwata vowed the company will be better prepared when it introduces the Wii U home console during the 2012 year-end shopping season for a strong comeback. He declined to give details such as pricing or what the software games available at that time might be.”

“But he said the Wii U will come with a strong game lineup at the launch as well as secure and safe Internet services that will offer players individual accounts. The Wii U will come with new ways of playing that will almost make the term “home console” obsolete, Iwata said. It will also offer mobile gaming. The machine has a touch-panel controller.”

Again, they’re betting big on the gaming console. Chances are though, it’s going to be a good seller and help them establish their dominance currently in the interactive gaming market. That is of course if they can bring it in at a reasonable price.

Will you be purchasing a Nintendo Wii U when they come out?

Nintendo, maker of many hit consoles and video games, posted losses through a good part of last year. The company is facing increased competition and sales of the 3DS, a handheld gaming device, among other devices, aren’t going as expected despite the price cut.

On the flip side, the Wii U, the next generation Wii console, is expected to be out by the end of this year right in time for the holiday season. It’s rumored to be twice as powerful as the Xbox 360 which, whether that’s true or not, wouldn’t be too hard of a feat considering the 360 has 6 year old technology.

Via Yahoo! News:

“The Japanese video game machine maker behind the Super Mario and Pokemon franchises said Thursday it now expects to sell far fewer of its 3DS machines, which feature three-dimensional images. It is forecasting sales of 14 million machines for the fiscal year through March 2012, down from an earlier 16 million. That’s despite a price cut for the 3DS in August.”

“Nintendo, which also makes the Wii home console, posted a loss of 48.35 billion yen ($627.9 million) for the first nine months through December. That was a reversal from a 49.56 billion yen profit the same period in 2010. Nintendo did not break down quarterly numbers.”

They’re expecting to sell just 10 Million Wii consoles which is quite the dip from the original estimate of 13 Million. Nine month sales for the company dropped 31.2 percent when compared to the year previous. Stock didn’t take too much of a hit from the news after dropping 0.6 percent.

Are planning on buying the Nintendo Wii U when it comes out?

You may have heard the rumor earlier regarding the Wii U’s supposed processing power, but now we have more official news: Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced today that the Wii U will launch right on time for the holiday shopping season.

No specific date was given, but Iwata said that Nintendo aims to have the Wii U out in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan by the year’s end. It isn’t clear at the moment if this means there will be a simultaneous release across all four regions.

Announced at E3 last year, the Wii U recently was on display for press at CES, and Nintendo says it plans to show off the console once again at this year’s E3. Considering that the launch is less than a year away now, Nintendo has said surprisingly little about the console, but that’s set to change come June, when E3 2012 takes place.

While unconfirmed, the latest round of rumors suggests that the Wii U’s processing capabilities will be twice that of the Xbox 360, which would make it quite a bit of a leap of the original Wii. Regardless of how powerful it is, the Wii U will be Nintendo’s first HD console.

A number of third-party publishers have already signed on in support for the Wii U, but we still have no information on what the Wii U’s launch titles will be. Look forward to more information on that come E3.

Seems like January is a busy month for the rumor mill. A new next-gen console rumor popped up today, this time concerning the Wii U and its supposed processing power.

Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U was first announced back at E3 last year, but we’ve heard next to nothing about it since its debut. It’s unclear how Wii U’s controller will work exactly, Nintendo hasn’t said what games will debut with it, and we still don’t know the specs–not the official ones, at least.

If the latest rumor from UK-based website Develop is to be believed, we may have a little insight into how powerful the Wii U will be. Citing a studio source, Develop says that the Wii U will have twice the processing and graphical capabilities of the Xbox 360.

If the Wii U really is two times more powerful than the Xbox 360, that would at least put it well ahead of the Wii’s graphical capabilities, which only supports SD resolutions. Still, Develop’s source says that the hardware isn’t quite as powerful as developers expected it to be.

“I’ve heard [a project designer] complain it’s underpowered compared to what Nintendo announced, resulting in people having to de-scale their plans,” the source said.

Nintendo is expected to reveal more information on the Wii U at E3 this year, with a launch date projected towards the end of the year.

Back during all of that talk of Miyamoto “retiring”–which turned out to be not true–he stated that he was interested in creating a new, entirely original IP. Going by a statement Miyamoto recently made to ZoomIn, it looks like he’s already working on it.

“People have come to expect a lot from me. This certainly makes me feel some pressure,” he said. “But if you ask me, ‘Is it too much pressure to try to come out with something new?’ I have to say no, I’m enjoying myself. When I make something I always try to do my best.”

Miyamoto pointed out that while he’s working on something entirely new, he’s still very much involved in the development of Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Pikmin 3, both of which were announced back at E3 this past year, so fans of those series need not worry.

He also shared his thoughts on the push for realism in video games this generation, saying that he doesn’t really feel pressured to follow suit.

“Each creator has his or her own field for which he or she is particularly good at. I’m not saying that I am particularly bad at making the very photo-realistic video games. But when it comes to the realistic games, you have to create something familiar. I personally want to make something really different.”

Miyamoto didn’t drop any hints as to when we can expect to hear more about his “new project”, unfortunately. Hopefully we’ll hear something by the time E3 rolls around this coming June.

While most tech gaming websites are busy handing out their picks for game and/or tech of the year, TorrentFreak has a “best of” list of its own: the top 5 most pirated games of 2011 on PC, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.

According to the site, the PC version of Crysis 2 takes the top “honors” (if you can call it that) for the year of 2011, having been downloading roughly 3,920,000 times. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which only came out last month, took second place with 3,650,000 downloads.

On the Xbox 360 side, Gears of War 3 took the top spot at 890,000 downloads, followed by, and this should be no surprise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at 830,000 downloads.

if nothing else, the top 5 list is an interesting glimpse into how much piracy there is across all three platforms, and how much the piracy on each platform differs from the other. To see the full list of “winners” (losers?), look below.

Three of the biggest companies in the gaming industry, EA, Nintendo and Sony, have apparently silently rescinded their stance on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act.

All three companies were previously found on a list of supporters of SOPA on the U.S. House of Representatives website, but an updated version sees all three companies removed from the list.

Joystiq reached out to EA for comment on the news, and was told that EA “never expressed a position for or against SOPA.” As of writing, neither Sony nor Nintendo have commented on their apparent change of heart.

It’s worth noting that while EA, Nintendo and Sony may have changed their stance on the SOPA bill, the Entertainment Software Association, which all three of the companies are under, is still listed as a SOPA supporter. In other words, the three companies technically still support the bill by virtue of their membership with the ESA.

The Business Software Association, and along with it Microsoft, backed out of supporting the SOPA bill back in November, but the ESA seems to be holding firm on their stance.

Nintendo already has an app store of sorts available on all of its platforms, such as the Wii Shop, the DSi Store and the 3DS’ eShop. According to a report by The Daily, Nintendo is planning on launching a Wii U app store as well, one that may even offer non-game apps.

Citing a person “familiar with the matter”, The Daily says that Nintendo’s Wii U app store will offer a much wider variety of apps than what we’ve seen on Nintendo’s current digital marketplace. With the Wii U, you’ll reportedly be able to download apps from the Wii U such as MLB.tv, or even possibly web, email and social networking apps.

Considering that the Wii U controller is essentially a tablet, this makes a good bit of sense and certainly seems credible. Nintendo hasn’t exactly had the best track record with its online services in comparison to, say, Microsoft and Sony, so something like this would at the least help bring Nintendo in line with its competition as far as online features are concerned.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D is one of the most anticipated Nintendo 3DS titles set to release next year, so the recent news that the 3D “remake” would be getting a hardware bundle when the game releases in Japan on March 20 wasn’t exactly surprising.

What is surprising is the above image that Hideo Kojima shared with his Twitter followers earlier today. In the tweet, Kojima says a limited edition “snakeskin” Nintendo 3DS is in the works – which, as he pointed out, is a first for consoles and handhelds alike.

Kojima didn’t share any details on where, when or how much, but he did say that we can expect to hear more news on January 20. Additionally, Andriasang reports that Kojima confirmed in a tweet that the Nintendo 3DS included in the MGS3: Snake Eater 3D bundle would have a unique design, and this appears to be it.

We assume this is a Japan-only thing for now, but given the franchise’s popularity overseas it wouldn’t be surprising if the limited edition “snakeskin” 3DS saw a release outside of Japan at some point.

We’re at the point right now that we expect to see DLC for just about any release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, regardless of whether it’s considered to be a major release or not. Nintendo has been the odd man out in the DLC craze, avoiding offering post-launch DLC for its titles – but it looks like they may be changing their minds.

According to a report by Nikkei (via Kotaku), the Japanese release of Fire Emblem for the Nintendo 3DS will be the very first title on a Nintendo console to have DLC when it launches next March. It isn’t known exactly what the DLC will be, but Nikkei suggests there will be several DLC items available for purchase by way of credit card or pre-paid, and each will cost “several hundred yen.”

DLC on mobile devices tends to be of the sort that aids you in progressing in your game, such as extra in-game cash, extra items and the like, but Nintendo says not to expect that sort of DLC. They didn’t specifically say, but their wording sounds like they plan on offering significant content offerings more in line with their console competitors, rather than going the social gaming route of offering copious amounts of needless microtransactions.

Though Nintendo hasn’t confirmed, it’s likely we’ll start seeing more and more DLC being offered on the Nintendo 3DS throughout next year and beyond. We already know that we can expect to see DLC on Nintendo’s Wii U console, which is also expected to launch next year.

Do you like the idea of DLC on your Nintendo 3DS, or do you typically avoid post-launch content?

The gaming industry has seen no shortage of interesting crossovers in its history, but none of them quite match the sheer ridiculousness of this latest one to be announced..

The Pokemon Company and Koei announced that during the Jump Festa expo that Pokemon</em is crossing over with Koei's Nobunaga’s Ambition for a new Nintendo DS title, apparently called Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambition, to release at some point next year. Nope, this isn’t a joke.

The two games couldn’t possibly be more different, aside from the fact that both originated in Japan and both are generally RPGs (albeit very different ones), so this pairing is perplexing to say the least.

Neither company shared any details, so we don’t know if this will be an RPG at all, much less a Pokemon-style RPG or a Nobunaga’s Ambition-style strategy RPG (or both?). The two companies did release a trailer over on the title’s official website, but the video doesn’t provide any clues as to just what in the world this project is supposed to be.

There’s your bizarre video game news of the week, ladies and gentlemen.

We reported earlier this month that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has a nasty glitch involving the “Song of the Hero” quest which, when encountered, prevents you from progressing forward entirely.

Specifically, the bug occurs when you go for the Thunder Dragon Song in the Lanayru Desert first. If you talk to Golo the Goron while there, and upon completing the Thunder Dragon sequence, cutscenes vital to progressing the quest forward will no longer appear.

If this happened to you and you weren’t willing to start all over again, Nintendo is working on two options to get the glitch all fixed up. The first option is to send in your save data to Nintendo, where they’ll take the data, fix the glitch, and send it on back to you.

For the second option, Nintendo says it’s planning on releasing a “program” to address the glitch for those who have their Wii connected to the internet. The company didn’t elaborate on what said “program” means – for all we know, it could just be a patch – but Nintendo promises more information when the fix is ready to be rolled out.

Nintendo didn’t say when to expect the “program” to be released, so if you’re anxious to get back into Skyward Sword and don’t want to have to start over, hit up this link to find out more about sending your save data in for repair.

Nintendo is gearing up to release the next round of free games as part of the 3DS Ambassador program on Friday, ONM reports. This time around, early adopters will be getting ten GameBoy Advance games at no cost.

3DS early adopters who enrolled themselves into the Ambassador program will be getting F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Super Mario Advance 3, The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Metroid Fusion, Wario Land 4, and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames.

In case you forgot how it worked the first time around, you don’t have to do anything to redeem any of the titles if you’ve enrolled in the Ambassador program; all of the “thank you” gifts will be added to your purchase history on the 3DS’ eShop.

The Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program is essentially Nintendo’s way of apologizing to early adopters of the handheld after they dropped the price only four months after its release in light of poor sales performance.

Earlier this year, Ambassadors were gifted ten NES games, including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Metroid, Balloon Fight, Wrecking Crew, Mario & Yoshi, Ice Climber and NES Open Tournament Golf.

Early this morning, we reported that Shigeru Miyamoto would be “retiring” from his current position at Nintendo after he said as much in an interview with Wired’s Game|Life. Apparently Wired heard wrong, because Nintendo has issued a correction saying otherwise.

A spokeswoman for Nintendo told Reuters: This is absolutely not true. There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation. He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned.”

In a statement to The Guardian, Nintendo further clarified Miyamoto’s comments:

“Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s role at Nintendo is not changing, He will continue to be a driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts. In discussing his priorities at Nintendo in a media interview, Mr Miyamoto explained how he is encouraging the younger developers at the company to take more initiative and responsibility for developing software.

“He attempted to convey his priorities moving forward, inclusive of overseeing all video game development and ensuring the quality of all products. Mr Miyamoto also discussed his desire to pursue fresh ideas and experiences of the kind that sparked his initial interest in video games.”

Miyamoto seemed pretty clear in his interview with Wired Game|Life that something would be changing, but I suppose it’s possible that something may have been lost in translation (or mistranslated). Either way, you can stop panicking now, Nintendo fans!

Before you read the headline and get all worked up, I’ll go ahead and save you some pain by telling you ahead of time that Shigeru Miyamoto is not leaving Nintendo, nor will he stop developing games – in fact, development will now be his focus, just not in the same way.

Speaking to Wired’s Game|Life, the legendary game designer said that he will be “retiring” from his position with Nintendo, and will instead be focused on developing smaller-scale projects, possibly even working with young, up-and-coming developers.

“I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether,” Miyamoto explained What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position…. What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

If you’re a fan of Miyamoto’s more grand-scale games, then I suppose this news could be taken as a bit of a bad thing. He reiterated his current goal, saying that he would prefer not to go into development on a game with a 5-year-long development cycle.

On the bright side, at least we know that an all-new title from Miyamoto is in the works – even if it will be “small”.
