Michael Fassbender has split from his Shame co-star Nicole Beharie. 

The two began dating in 2011 after shooting the film in which Fassbender plays a man struggling with sex addiction. They went public in 2012, but Fassbender said that it was hard for them to maintain the relationship since they lived so far apart.

“We’re trying to see each other as often as possible,” he said. “That’s kind of difficult when she lives here (in New York) and I live in England.”

Beharie confirmed news of the split Sunday, writing on Twitter, “Yes its true Fassbender and I are no longer dating.”

However, some people are speculating that the two have gotten engaged, hence why Beharie said “no longer dating” instead of “no longer together,” but that may be just be wishful thinking. Others thought it was odd that Beharie referred to her ex by his last name and followed up that tweet with “More interesting… Here’s the latest 42 trailer.”

Fassbender was previously linked to X-Men: First Class co-star Zoe Kravitz. Unlike with Beharie, Fassbender and Kravitz did begin dating while they were working together on the film in 2010. There is a 12 year age difference between the two, but sources said that Kravitz is “really mature for her age” and that she was “actually the one taking care of him most of the time.”

Fassbender has yet to acknowledge the split, but that could be because he is busy filming his next movie, the musician comedy Frank.

Michael Fassbender is on fire these days, and now he admits to GQ magazine, that he has a girlfriend to see him through all of his success. The actor opens up to GQ about his fairly new relationship with Shame costar Nicole Beharie, after months of speculation that there was a love connection between the two stars.

However, don’t expect Fassbender to agree with the rumors that they were more than coworkers while filming. The actor doesn’t mince words about how his relationship with Beharie started. “Nothing happened while we were filming,” said Fassbender for GQ’s July issue.

The 35 year-old goes on to explain the details surrounding the beginnings of their relationship saying, “We started talking more on the promotion thing. So, yeah, it just sort of unfolded like that.”

Nicole Beharie, 27, lives in New York, which makes this relationship a long distance one, which Michael Fassbender admits isn’t the easiest thing to attain in the industry stating, “I’m seeing Nicole, we’re trying to see each other as often as possible. That’s kind of difficult when she lives [in New York] and I live in England.” In the past Fassbender has been linked to Zoë Kravitz and Leasi Andrews.

Earlier in the year Fassbender was snubbed by the Academy for the NC-17 film Shame, where he played a sex addict. Fassbender admits to GQ that the whole ordeal was “very upsetting” saying, “At the beginning people [say], ‘You’re going to be going to the Oscars,’ and you’re like, ‘Whatever, doesn’t matter, don’t think so. But after a while it does penetrate. After a while you’re like, ‘Anyway, so I’m going to the Oscars…’ And you start to believe it. And I did. I thought I was going. And then I found out I wasn’t and I was upset. I was very upset by it.

As for his future the actor is reportedly slated to star alongside Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in The Counselor, in which he’ll play the title role of a lawyer.
