Hotel owners in New York City have agreed on a long-term contract with hotel housekeepers that will not only give them raises, provide fully paid health coverage and offer larger pension contributions, they will also receive personal panic buttons.

The move comes after French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn was accused of sexually assaulting a worker in Sofitel’s New York location last year.

Under the proposed contract certain employees will be equipped with “devices to be carried on their persons at work that they can quickly and easily activate to effectively summon prompt assistance to their location.”

Housekeepers in New York can expect the devices to be delivered within a years time to housekeepers, room-service staff and attendants who stock minibars.

If you look around New York City you’ll find the NYPD logo emblazoned on everything from hats and tie clips to jackets and coffee mugs, where you won’t find the logo is on the clothing and accessories for off-duty New York Police Officers.

On Tuesday police chief Ray Kelly issued a new ruling which forbids the city’s nearly 35,000 police officers from wearing any non-issued clothing with the letters NYPD.

The ruling comes after an officer was spotted wearing an NYPD T-Shirt that read:

“Kill Them All and Let God Sort It Out.”

Under the official ruling officers are forbidden to wear ”any item of apparel which contains a Department logo or shield, or in any way identifies its wearer with the New York City Police Department unless approved by the Uniform and Equipment Review Committee, prior to being worn by a member of the service, uniformed or civilian, on or off-duty.”

In a rather dramatic response to the ban one NYPD officer told dnainfo:

“The NYPD logo is now on a par with al-Qaeda and bin Laden. We can’t display them.”

In the meantime any NYPD officer who current had NYPD keepsake is violating a direct order.

Prosecutors in New York are suing Anita Collins after the 67-year-old women embezzled more than $1 million from the Archdiocese of New York and then spent that money on lavish gifts for herself and loved ones.

According to Prosecutors Anita used the money she stole over a nine-year period to buy lavish items from the likes of Bloomingdale’s, Barney’s and Brooks Brothers.

Confronted at work last month the thief admitted her crimes after $10,000 went missing in December, however Assistant DA Amy Justiniano says she continued to lie about having not taken the other $1,063,000.

“She held herself out to be a religious woman going to church every day,” Justiniano said. “Yet, behind their backs she would lie and steal.”

Collins is no stranger to this type of theft, she pleaded guilty twice to larceny cases and had served probation. The archdiocese didn’t start doing background checks until 2003 which saved Collins from being discovered.

In order to embezzle the money Anita Collins wrote duplicate checks in small accounts and cashed them using fake names.

On Monday Anita entered no plea and is currently being held on $750,000 bail.

Church Bookkeeper Steals $1 Million From New York Archdiocese is a post from: The Inquisitr

Several years ago Los Angeles resident Cleo Berry was living in New York when he was paid $500 to participate in a photo shoot and now a photograph from that shoot has been altered to play off the mans weight in a set of New York City billboards focused on the dangers of obesity.

The 27-year-old man was photographed by Morten Smidt who turned around and sold the world to stock photo company ImageSource. The stock photo company then sold the photograph to New York City’s Department of Health, who in turn altered the photo by removing Berry’s right leg for an anti-diabetes campaign.

Speaking to Yahoo News  Berry said of the first time he discovered the ad:

“I cried at my computer screen for, like, a minute.” and “I said: ‘Oh my gosh, they even gave me crutches. Come on, people.’ ”

In the meantime the New York City health department do anything illegal in altering the photograph since Berry signed a waiver at the time of the photo shoot, however they essentially lied to anyone examining the advertisement by providing a “fake” diabetes patients with a leg that was digitally amputated.

In defending their actions John Kelly, a spokesman for the health department said in a statement:

“This issue isn’t about one actor but rather the 700,000 New Yorkers who struggle with diabetes, which kills 1,700 people a year and causes amputations in another 3,000,” and “Advertising to warn the public about health concerns saves lives, and we will continue our efforts to warn New Yorkers about diabetes.”

Berry, an actor by trade is worried that it could affect his career, noting, “I’ve always wanted my photo in an ad all over the city, but I was hoping it would be for a TV show or something, not — this,” Berry said.

In an attempt to drum up some positive advertising, Berry has offered to lower his usual acting rate to any soda company willing to use  his unaltered image for one of their campaigns.

Joking about the image he says of his soda campaign offer:

“I’ll sing and dance for them and I won’t charge an arm and a leg.”

Many of us have been there. The make-or-break college acceptance letter. But imagine what it would be like if your number one (or, let’s be fair, even your numbers two or three) sent you an invitation to attend their prestigious institution of higher learning. So you pack up your macbook and acoustic guitar, only to find out a few hours later that you were, in fact, rejected. That’s what happened to dozens of unfortunate applicants to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

All in all, 76 early-decision applicants doomed for rejection saw a not-so-legitimate acceptance letter when checking their application statuses online over the weekend. This placeholder “test letter” was not taken down and was seen by tons of students between 4pm and 4:30pm. An additional 46 students who had actually been accepted also saw the letter.

Here are some dark sob stories for you:

Yap Zong Yao woke up at 5 a.m. Saturday in Singapore to check his status from Vassar College. He returned to sleep “overwhelmed with joy,” he said.He was actually rejected. Mahmoud Ghedira stayed up with family members until 11 p.m. Friday in Tunisia as they lauded the son who had gained entry into an esteemed American school. San Antonio native Megan Curiel saw the good news on her iPhone. She sobbed. Her father called relatives, she ordered some Vassar merch for her and her mother, and the family drank champagne. “I was in,” she said, “for about three hours.”

Two hours after the oopsie was discovered, the college notified the students of the “system error” and apologized. A Vassar spokesperson says no further action is planned. Parents are, of course, understandably livid, with some requesting a refund of the application fee, and one family thinking legal action since acceptance is supposedly binding.

So. Ouch.

At least 1,489 New York City Police Officers were trained to fight crime in America’s largest city with the aid of an anti-Muslim film.

The training video, titled The Third Jihad was funded by a nonprofit group and features Muslim terrorists shooting Christians and then portrayed an Islamic flag flying outside the White House.

As the video carries on the narrator states that Islam’s “true agenda” for America is to ”infiltrate and dominate” the country.

Reports of The Third Jihad actually began surfacing in 2011 at which time a top police officials said only a few NYPD officers had screened the video however a Freedom of Information Act request showed that possibly more than 1,500 officers have since been trained with assistance from the anti-Muslim video.

As the videos name suggests we are living in the “third Jihad” which followed the first that occurred after Muhammad’s time and a second that occurred in the Middle Ages.

In fending off comments about mainstream Muslims the narrator states:

“Americans are being told that many of the mainstream Muslim groups are also moderate” and ”When in fact if you look a little closer, you’ll see a very different reality. One of their primary tactics is deception.”

Shockingly the narrator is himself a Muslim.

The film has been shown to officers for up to a year and has included patrol officers, detectives, lieutenants and sergeants.

News of the racist video tape couldn’t come at a worst time for the NYPD who were recently caught receiving assistance from the CIA in order to spy on Muslims. The FBI has also recently been shown to use anti-Muslim training videos as part of their trainee materials.

1500 NYPD Officers Trained With Anti-Muslim Propaganda Film is a post from: The Inquisitr

A New York City police officer committed suicide on Thursday night while on-duty. According to reports the officer had been in a phone argument with his girlfriend.

Local residents heard a gunshot and when going out to investigate they found the boy of the 28-year-old officer on the street in Queens.

According to the New York Daily News the officer and his partner were called to the area after receive a call about several car break-ins.

According to a police department insider:

“He got out of his car and he’s on the phone with somebody,” and “He puts the gun in his mouth and fires.”

An onlookers says the mans partner ran to the police cruiser to call for help but ultimately a police car rushed the officer away “because there wasn’t an ambulance.”

The man mad it to the hospital but died shortly afterwards. Police say they are still investigating the suicide.

Responding to what they had witnessed one resident said:

“It’s such a beautiful block,” one resident said. “It’s probably the prettiest block in Hollis Hills. This is the first time in 20 years I’ve ever seen something like this happen. It’s awful.”

The police officers girlfriend has not been revealed or offered any insight into the topic of their argument at this time.

The 2:42 piece was written by Eliot Glazer and starts Eliot and Ilana Glazer.

In the video Eliot and Ilana walk around New York City spouting off some of the most routine and annoying things people say in the city such as:

“It’s a ‘law’ that taxis must go to Brooklyn” and they get excited when a local news anchor walks by but then exclaim they are proud not to own a TV.

Last week, word got out that Tony Sparano, the now former head coach for the Miami Dolphins, had been picked up by the New York Jets as their new offensive coordinator — a role that carries with it the responsibility of coming up with a solution to that Mark Sanchez problem.

Sanchez has come under quite a bit of scrutiny as of late for his.  less than ideal performance, to put it mildly. He even reportedly drew some ire from his teammates, who commented anonymously that he was “lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched.”

Despite what everyone else seems to be saying about Sanchez, Sparano believes there’s still hope yet for the young quarterback to make a comeback. When asked in an interview by Sports Radio Interviews whether or not there’s an “upside” to Mark Sanchez, Sparano had this to say:

“I absolutely do. I can’t wait to get him back and get him going again. Right now all these guys need a little bit of rest, but when the time comes and the league allows us to be able to do that we are looking forward to getting him and getting him going. You are absolutely correct when you talk about looking at the numbers and looking at the three year numbers and those type of things I think when you put all the numbers together on the table you see an arrow up here for Mark. I really liked this kid coming out of the draft. I spent a lot of time with him and again I can just tell you what it is like on the other side of the line when you are playing against him and he causes you problems.”

You may have seen a hilarious image pop up on Facebook or Tumblr in the past few days from Japan- department store style in-store signage from a Japanese shop, in which it loudly and proudly trumpets a big “Fuckin’ Sale” for Christmas.

The image is a funny one not only for the incongruous profanity, but also because it plays into some of our stereotypes of how people in Asia perceive American culture. (One that is subverted in the joke of the college kid with the Asian character tattoo that they think means “courage” or “strength” but really means “pork fried rice.”) The image of the confused representation of another culture is one that resonates strongly, which is probably part of the reason why the pic has been catapulted across the internet in the past few days.

Gawker has spoken to American chef Ron Silver, who owns the comfort food restaurant Bubby’s in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Silver- who has pulled off a great coup if he is correct- claims credit for making the f-word a point of emphasis in Japanese pop culture right now, saying that it comes from his propensity for using the intensity descriptor as a way to explain to staff that the food he serves is fresher than that which most Japanese residents are accustomed. (In Japan, fresh produce is really f*cking expensive, it seems.) New Yorker Silver hilariously explains:

“I trained these guys and trained these guys, and they called me up and said, ‘By fresh do you mean frozen?’ And I was like, ‘I mean fucking fresh, man. Do not fuck around with this thing. The very next day they were like, ‘By fresh do you mean canned?’ And I was like, ‘What do you not understand about fucking fresh?’”

It seems Silver’s Japanese staff took the phrase to heart, but the story even has a kind of f*cking touching ending- the chef explains how it came to be a marketing buzzword for his Japanese ventures:

Silver’s employees may have been fucking with him the whole time. They later surprised Silver by plastering Bubby’s with the slogan “Fuckin Fresh,” adopting it as their motto.

“It was like, alright you won my heart over,” Silver said.

“F–k all of u,” tweeted Barkin, “Bloomberg & every1 goosestepping behind u.”

The sultry 57 year-old actress witnessed suspected protestor arrests in the wee hours of the morning during a walk back to her West Village home with boyfriend Sam Levinson. A long, expletive-laden string of Tweets followed, with Barkin claiming that she at one point was threatened and man-handled by one of the officers. Exaggeration? Watch the video her boyfriend shot of the incident and decide for yourself.

Barkin’s reaction to the incident:

“Just threatened on my street by NYPD, cop shoved me, both hands, onto sidewalk.”

At 4:00 A.M. -

“Walking home . . . 13th and 6th, police making random arrests of non protesters. Young girl in police van screaming ‘I’m just trying 2 get home.’ “

“U ARE the violence in my city.”

Despite such vocal and vivid criticism, Barkin nor her spokespeople have commented since. Bloomberg has refused to comment. The NYPD has refused to comment.

However, the NYPD did make 68 Occupy-related arrests on New Year’s Day; mostly misdemeanors like obstructing governmental administration, disorderly conduct, etc. A Berkeley, California man, Zachary Miller, was arrested on charges of felony assault on a police officer. The 28-year old allegedly attacked a police officer, slicing his hand with a pair of scissors.

Barkin has had run-ins with Bloomberg before – the two have rubbed elbows at several charity dinners back when Barkin was the wife of Revlon Chairman Ron Perelman (not to be confused with Ron Perlman, Hellboy).

Ellen Barkin Tweets Blast NYPD, Bloomberg, And Occupy Arrests is a post from: The Inquisitr

Starbucks never has been known for their exceptionally low prices, to put it one way. Don’t look for that to change anytime soon, either; the company announced today that it plans on raising prices in the U.S., primarily in the Northeast and Southeast regions.

Starbucks says that prices in the regions will only see an increase of about one percent, but that’s not a one percent price increase on all items on the company’s menu. The price of some items on Starbucks’ menu will stay the same while in New York City, for example, the price of a 12-ounce “tall” latte will go up by 10 cents. The 16-ounce grande, which Starbucks says is its most popular beverage, will not be effected by the latest price hike in any region.

The price hike in several of its busiest markets is in response to increased prices on commodities such as coffee and milk cutting into the company’s projected fiscal 2012 earnings by roughly 21 cents per share, Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson told Reuters. “These adjustments are the result of balancing the cost of doing business with competitive dynamics in these markets,” Olson explained.

Starbucks raising prices in U.S. Northeast, Southeast regions is a post from: The Inquisitr

A staffer at the New York Times had an “oops” moment on Wednesday when they accidentally sent an email to 9 million New York Times readers instead of the few hundred the email was meant for.

At first the New York Times called the emails accidental “spam” but later said the message was only meant to go out to a few hundred people who had recently chosen to cancel its home delivery service. Instead the email was sent to anyone who had ever provided an email to the New York Times for any reason.

Almost immediately after the New York Times made its announcement fears began to surface that the “spam” came after recipients’ security was breached by a hacker, allowing them to steal user information.

The security breach concern was valid as the company’s email provider Epsilon had been hacked earlier in the year, a fact that led many industry analysts to suspect that the new spam messages were part of a phishing scheme.

A spokeswomen for the paper quickly revealed:

“We regret that the error was made, but no one’s security has been compromised.”

The New York Times has apologized and promises that no information provided to the company was used erroneously.

Just one year into his governorship of New York and already Andrew Cuomo is causing waves, announcing this week that he wants to bring casino’s to the big Apple.

Cuomo will begin working with lawmakers next week in an attempt to add a amendment to the New York constitution which will in turn legalize the building and operation of casino’s.

Speaking to the New York Daily News Cuomo revealed:

“I’m not excluding any locations at this time.” While he did mention Queens over Manhattan he also point out that “Albany is [also] a real location. Buffalo is a real location.”

While casino’s bring with them increased crime and compulsive gambling Cuomo says the economic advantage to the state and directly to New York City far outweighs any negative impact the casino’s may attract.

With the money New York would be able to rebuild many of its failing roads, bridges and state agencies which have suffered after years of declining budgets.

To push his new agenda Cuomo used part of his interview time to focus on some of his various achievements in the last year including the states legalization of gay marriage, the state’s very first property tax cap, an on-time state budget that cut spending and new ethics reforms.

According to the New York Times the state could take in upwards of $684 million from electronic gambling at the Aqueduct racetrack and other “racinos” before new structures are even built.

In unrelated Cuomo news he also ruled out a 2016 White House campaign during his interview, noting:

“Not at all,” he says. “I’ve been around too long. I’ve heard too much talk. I’ve seen the movie too many times.”

Andrew Cuomo Wants Casino’s In New York City is a post from: The Inquisitr

NEW YORK – While the economy still struggles onward into an uncertain future, more than 1.4 million low-income earners will see their paychecks increase after the new year as minimum wage goes up in 2012.

Minimum wage is set to go up on New Years Day for Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Ohio, Oregon,Vermont, and Washington. It will reportedly rise between 28 and 37 cents per hour starting Jan. 1, due to state requirements that minimum wage stays consistent with inflation.

The federal minimum wage rate stands at $7.25 per hour, which adds up to an average annual income of approximately $15,000. 18 states have wage rates above the federal requirement, and 10 states raise minimum wage every year in order to keep a steady pace with the rising cost of living.

Rates in the states mentioned above will start at $7.64 per hour in Colorado, and reach as high as $9.04 in Washington next year. These increases are expected to put an extra $582 to $770 in the pockets of full-time minimum wage earners. These increases come with a hope that higher pay will result in a potential economic boost. 2012′s minimum wage increases should raise consumer spending, adding about $336 million to the nation’s gross domestic product and result in the creation of more than 3,000 full-time jobs. Paul Sonn, legal co-director at NELP, had this to say about the anticipated increase:

“Increasing minimum wage is a key form of local stimulus. It helps front-line workers whose wages have been stagnant and falling by putting more money into the pockets of low income families who then spend the money at local businesses.”

Low-wage workers, with average wages under $13.52 an hour, have watched their wages decline 2.3% since the beginning of the recession. Roughly 80% of low-wage workers affected by the increases are over the age of 20, with 78% working at least 20 hours a week.

The minimum wage boosts might be just what we need right now given the questionable progress of the payroll tax cut. Though a short-term extension was approved on Friday, it only extends the tax breaks to February, giving business owners a very tiny and unstable window to plan for the future.

Alec Baldwin won’t be running for the New York City mayoral position anytime in the future, according to the Words With Friends loving actor he simply isn’t “horny” for the office like other candidates who want the job.

Baldwin said during his weekly WNYC podcast:

“I’ve lost my appetite”

He goes on to add that other candidates are ”like a guy on a date that you can tell he just can’t wait to get his hand up your blouse before even the lights go out in the theater.”

He then reveals his own selfish motives:

“Give this up for what?” he said. “I give up money and fame and position and success; I give up this wonderful life I have now in exchange for the chance to ‘really change things?’… Yeah, I’m not quite sure you can anymore.”

He then goes on to hint at a continuing role on the hit CBS show 30 Rock. While he told the Associated Press in October that he was ready to leave the show he now says sticking with 30 Rock would be better than a mayoral position.

One thing Alec Baldwin won’t be doing in the near future? Flying from city to city aboard an American Airlines flight. The actor was recently kicked off a flight when he because rude to flight crew and started calling them inappropriate names after they asked him to turn off his Smartphone in the middle of a Words With Friends game.

Alec Baldwin Can’t Get Horny Enough To Run For New York City Mayor is a post from: The Inquisitr

In absence of direction from the Federal Government, States and Cities are passing laws to deal with illegal immigration.  States such as Arizona, North Carolina and Texas have all put more laws in the books making it more difficult for illegal immigrants to work, travel or move freely.  Vermont and some California Cities have passed laws making it harder for police to enforce already existing laws dealing with illegal immigrants. It has become clear that as jobs have grown more scarce the problem of illegal immigration is not just being dealt with in the border states anymore.

The Federal Government has taken an active position on the subject.  President Obama has asked the Justice Department to actively help challenge laws passed in Arizona which the States says are necessary to help local officials enforce Federal Laws. At the same time he has instructed the Attorney general not to interfere when cities vote to become “Sanctuaries” (places where local authorities are instructed not to enforce immigration laws).

A spokesman for Attorney General Eric Holder had this to say on the subject:

“There is a big difference between a state or locality saying they are not going to use their resources to enforce a federal law, as so-called sanctuary cities have done, and a state passing its own immigration policy that actively interferes with federal law, that’s what Arizona did in this case.”

The Republican primaries have also had there share of talk about illegal immigration, with front-runner Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry taking heat from contenders Michelle Bachmann and Ron Paul as being soft on illegal immigrants.  Recent polls have shown that 66% of Americans favor some form of program that lets illegal immigrants apply for citizenship as long as they meet Federal Requirements.

2012 being an election year, it is likely that this issue is going to be raised to a much higher level than in other years.  States and Cities will have the chance to have their platforms debated at the national level as the candidates look to use this issue to drum up support for their own positions.

Filmmakers on the hit NBC series Law & Order: SVU were forced to shut down production on the TV series this past Friday after more than 100 Occupy Wall Street protesters stormed the set.

The show, which uses ripped from the headlines plots to tell it’s story had staged a Zuccotti Park type encampment and according to protesters they though it was exploiting their cause.

As they stormed the set one protesters told the New York Daily News:

“This is not us …We are not part of corporate TV America.”

After the scene ensued the city eventually rescinded the shows filming permit to the cheers of protesters as one of them announced.

“We made it so that they could not exploit us and that’s awesome.”

A short standoff between police and protesters occurred during the incident but ended without any trouble between both parties and the crowd eventually left.

I’m all for protesters standing up for their rights but shutting down entire businesses in which people rely on for their own jobs is hardly standing up against the financial backers that put America in it’s current situation.

Billionaire Manhattan socialite Candia Fisher was the financial victim of a hacker this week after her email was hacked and $550,000 was wired from her personal bank accounts to an account in Australia.

According to the New York Post Fisher conducts almost all of her business via email which in turn made it simple to find personal details, including banking passwords, account numbers and other information needed to transfer the funds.

After receiving access to her email account the hacker began the Australian transfer which continued until a banking authority noticed the strange transfers and alerted a clueless Candia Fisher.

At this time it’s not clear if any money can be recovered however the damage could have been far more severe given the billions of dollars that were at stake.

This isn’t the first time a member of the Fisher Brothers real estate clan have been robbed of their wealth, in the 1960s a group of armed men broke into the Manhattan apartment of Candia’s mother and stole millions of dollars in jewels.

Socialite may be just the right word for Candia as she’s obviously not the brains of the family’s operation given her inability to understand that sending personal banking info through email is ridiculous.
