B-Movie fans, it’s time to get excited. “Iron Sky” tells the story that we’ve all been waiting to see. What would happen if Sarah Palin was president, Newt Gingrich set up a moon colony, and Nazi’s attacked from space? That, basically, is the premise of this terribly fantastic movie.

Here’s the official synopsis from the movie’s website:

“Iron Sky is dark science fiction comedy that takes place in the year 2018, when the Nazis, who fled the Earth to the dark side of the Moon in 1945, return to claim the Earth.”

Sarah Palin isn’t specifically listed in the credits. Instead, actress Stephanie Paul plays a character called simply “The President of the United States.” It does seem, however, that Paul is doing a Sarah Palin impression in the trailer.

“Iron Sky” will debut this weekend at the Berlin International Film Festival. Director Timo Vuorensola said:

“It is simply mind-blowing that we get to have the world premiere of Iron Sky in Berlin, of all places!. I hope the movie’s antifascist message will resound with audiences.”

The film is bound to have at least some financial success since it was partially financed by fans through the film’s website. According to Wired, “Iron Sky” will open in Finland on April 4th. It will hit the United States during the South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas.

Sixty-seven years after the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau were liberated by Soviet troops in the Polish village of Oświęcim, a prominent survivor of the camps has died at the age of 91.

Kazimierz Smolen was a young man- in his early twenties- when the camps were liberated on January 27th, 1945, on what would later become International Holocaust Memorial Day. By 1947, the site had been converted to a museum to mark the horrific acts that had been committed within its gates and outside, and still notably bore the legend “Arbeit macht frei (loosely translated to “work frees you”) over Auschwitz’s entrance. The town of Oświęcim- renamed to Auschwitz by the Nazis after it was taken over to build the death camp- was where Smolen was imprisoned and survived, and he later came to be a director of the memorial site first started in 1947.

Smolen served as director at the Auschwitz memorial from 1955 through 1990, but remained a prominent member of the local community after his retirement. A Catholic, Smolen was dragged off to the camps after assisting in the anti-Nazi resistance in the early part of the war, attributing his survival to a combination of “extreme” luck as well as being in good health during the time he was imprisoned. Later, he spoke of why he made the difficult choice to return to Auschwitz for so long and manage the memorial, and Smolen explained:

“Sometimes when I think about it, I feel it may be some kind of sacrifice, some kind of obligation I have for having survived.”

In Oświęcim, survivors gathered at Auschwitz to mark International Holocaust Memorial Day, and a moment of silence was observed to mark Smolen’s death. (Below is a clip of a survivor of Auschwitz- not Smolen- who later returned with his grandchildren to the camps, dancing to “I Will Survive.”)

Hitler’s lair could soon be the next big tourist attraction in Poland. The Polish government is currently looking for an investor to turn the “wolf’s lair” into a tourist hot spot.

Reuters reports that Hitler’s lair, which is located deep in the woods of northeastern Poland, is the famous site of an assassination attempt on Hitler by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg.

The complex served as a military headquarters for the Nazis during World War 2. The Telegraph reports that Hitler built huge bombproof bunkers at the site which could house 2,000 people. The lair was partially destroyed by the Nazis as they retreated in 1945.

Local forestry official Zenon Piotrowicz said that there is no way to rebuild the bunkers, but he hopes that an investor can turn Hitler’s lair into a museum. Piotrowicz said:

“There is no way you can rebuild the bunkers… We are concerned more about having the place made more attractive to tourists, including the renovation of the hotel and restaurant… We want a new leaseholder to invest a lot, particularly in a museum with an exhibition that could be open all year long… We are waiting for offers, but so far we have none… ”

Currently, the Wolf’s Lair is open to the public. But it doesn’t attract many visitors due to its location.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Michael Moore locked horns on Wednesday’s episode of The View, engaging in an entertainingly heated debate over the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Things kicked off when film-maker Moore argued that bin Laden should have been put on trial by the U.S., pointing out that “we did a very smart thing putting the Nazis on trial.” Hasselbeck returned fire, pointing out that the Nazis were tried in peace time, while the U.S. was “still at war.”

“No, we’re not, actually,” replied Moore. “(We are) spending ‘billions’ of dollars of our money on something that has nothing to do with a real threat. The way we show the world that we’re different that we give even the most heinous person their day in court. If we start to say that we’re afraid to hold trials because terrorists might hurt us, we look like a bunch of wussies.”

Hasselbeck seemed genuinely angry at this point, snapping back with, “You’re telling me Osama bin Laden & deserves a trial, but where, in New York City at the site of the slaughter of our own 3,000 on 9/11? Absolutely not. How dare …”

Afterwards, Hasselbeck Tweeted that the two had “passionately agreed to disagree,” and they would grab lunch together. You can check out a video of the full debate below.

While I don’t agree with all of his views, I’d have to side with Moore here: giving even the most despicable individuals their day in court (and no, not “in New York City at the site of the slaughter” as Hasselbeck emotionally screeches) is the sign of a mature, confident nation that believes in sticking to its core values. The Board of Directors at Cannes has officially declared filmmaker Lars von Trier a “persona non grata” at Cannes after he made some bizarre and offensive comments calling Israel a “pain in the ass” and saying he “sympathizes” with Nazis.

Von Trier has since apologized for the statements, but he originally said:

“I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy being a Jew… But it turned out I was not a Jew, but even if I’d been a Jew I would be kind of a second-rate Jew because there is kind of a hierarchy in the Jewish population… What can I say? I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, yes absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end… I think I understand the man. He’s not what you would call a good guy, but I understand much about him and I sympathize with him a little bit. But come on, I’m not for the Second World War, and I’m not against Jews.”

Von Trier continued:

“Okay, I am a Nazi… I am of course very much for Jews. No, not too much because Israel is a pain in the ass. But still, how can I get out of this sentence?”

The Cannes Board of Directors was not impressed by the speech, and issued this statement:

“The Festival de Cannes provides artists from around the world with an exceptional forum to present their works and defend freedom of expression and creation. The Festival’s Board of Directors, which held an extraordinary meeting this Thursday 19 May 2011, profoundly regrets that this forum has been used by Lars von Trier to express comments that are unacceptable, intolerable, and contrary to the ideals of humanity and generosity that preside over the very existence of the Festival.

“The Board of Directors firmly condemns these comments and declares Lars von Trier a persona non grata at the Festival de Cannes, with effect immediately.”

His film, Melancholia, will still be eligible to win awards, but the filmmaker is barred from actually accepting them at the festival.

The head of Xbox Live’s moderation team has warned that users who use a swastika symbol in online multiplayer games of Call of Duty: Black Ops can expect to be banned.

Black Ops allows players to design their own emblems from scratch, which led to one user dimly asking Stephen Toulouse what would happen should he create and use a swastika while playing online. Toulouse’s response that he would be banned caused an outcry amongst Internet Jerks. Many of the Jerks argued that:

1. Microsoft was being hypocritical (as the single-player game contains swastikas), or
2. That the swastika can have other meanings, or
3. That OMG YOU’RE DESTROYING THE VERY PERSONAL FREEDOMS THE NAZIS WERE TRYING TO TAKE FROM US.

All of which, of course, is monumentally stupid.

Firstly, the single-player game in Black Ops is rated ‘Mature’ so you know what you’re getting, whereas an online component of any game is impossible to rate. Secondly, while the swastika has had other meanings in the past, it is overwhelmingly known as the symbol of a regime that committed the mass genocide of millions, so using it is just being hostile and trying to deliberately rile people. Thirdly, shut up.

Anyway, in response to these complaints, Toulouse wrote an eloquent (and entirely correct) response (that you can read in full here), stating:

“Most [people complaining about our banning of the swastika] are just contrarians.  They would never dare to wear a swastika openly, but they love to argue about how the world has “misunderstood” this symbol. Or they view any opportunity for human interaction, no matter the appropriateness, to push their point. [...] It’s not political correctness, it’s fundamental respect. If you think the swastika symbol should be re-evaluated by societies all over the Earth, I think that’s great.  Your Xbox Live profile or in game logo, which doesn’t have the context to explain your goal, is probably not the right place to do that.”

I’m not usually a supporter of censorship myself, though even I recognise that, every now and again, it can be for the greater good. And this is one of those times, folks. Don’t be an antagonistic ass for the sake of it, eh?

Crooks and Liars has an interesting video of Glenn Beck jumping on the right-wing “dems are Nazis” bandwagons.

Beck does a good job of talking out of both sides of his mouth for the duration of the video- he even starts out saying that there is “so much anger and hatred in this country right now,” conveniently forgetting that he’s spurred a frick-ton of it with his nightly fearmongering. He launches into a speech about how no one is saying Eugenics are coming to this country, before spending the next few minutes crying about how OMG, Eugenics are coming to this country!! Eleventy!

Beck draws parallels between economic collapse in Nazi Germany and modern-day America and posits that we will no longer be able to pay for healthcare for everyone, and we will begin to make “tough decisions.” What is so bothersome about this rhetoric is that those who spout it continually completely ignore the fact that the much feared “death panels” already exist in this country. And they’re scarier now, when they operate for profit and behind the bottom-line focused facades of corporations, executing last minute deadly decisions and moving the goalposts in such a way that access to care is not a right and something that can be yanked from beneath the feet of anyone suffering a life-threatening condition when it is determined to be “pre-existing” or “experimental.” Or in other words, “too expensive.”

Anyone who doubts “death panels” exist today need look no further than the case of Nataline Sarkisyan, a teenager who fell victim to insurance company games when they had all the time in the world and she did not. Nataline succumbed to a form of recurrent leukemia while she waited for Cigna to decide her fate- UCLA’s hospitals declined two available livers while waiting for Cigna to approve treatment.

Rush Limbaugh caused a bit of a stir today when he, not unlike a whiny teenager, compared people he disagrees with to Nazis.

Dittoheads ran to “the Google” to find some side by side pics on conservative blog Sweetness & Light of the logo of the new Universal Healthcare Plan and some Nazi symbolism. The Führer furor began when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi took aim at astroturfing right-wingers across the country who are disrupting town hall meetings on the controversial plan to bring Universal Healthcare to all Americans. In a statement, DCCC spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said:

“At a time when families need real solutions to rebuild the economy and make health care more affordable, Rush Limbaugh is attempting to sidetrack the important debate through his use of symbols that are synonymous with murder and intolerance. Americans deserve better.”

So what do you think? Can any idiot see that it’s just a caduceus, used by medical professionals since antiquity and far outdating the Nazis? Or is this part of some sinister plan to… I’m not really sure what. Treat sick people? Wrest money out of the hands of big pharma and redirect it to actual medical care?

Deutsche Post apparently printed 20 stamps with Hess next to a bouquet of flowers as part of a custom printing service. Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany, and there were also concerns that the mistake would offend Jewish groups.

Deutsche Post apologized for the error.

Hess was known in later years as the longest serving German post war prison, eventually committing suicide in his cell in 1986.
