The only thing geekier than geeky things in general is geeky disagreements about geeky things.

And as far as geek-fights go, this one is pretty geeky. Pi Day is celebrated March 14th, the date that numerically matches up with the mathematical constant, 3.14. However, not long after math nerds the country over began celebrating Pi Day, another faction of mathletes cropped up looking to supplant it with Tau Day on its corresponding number date- June 28th, or 6.28.

Not surprisingly, the debate isn’t all super-friendly, per CNN:

This idea of celebrating Tau is now at least 10 years old, having cropped up in a 2001 essay by Bob Palais called “Pi is wrong!”

But it exploded on the Internet last Tau Day — June 28 (6/28) — when Michael Hartl launched the Tau Manifesto, a lengthy treatise about why pi is confusing and should be replaced with tau.

The news network also point/counterpoints Hartl and another math dude who are all “come at me, bro” about Pi Day versus Tau Day:

“There definitely are some people who have trouble with the notation,” says Hartl, a physicist and entrepreneur. “I would eventually like to see that the mathematical powers that be acknowledge the problem.”

And what do the powers that be say? There is a sense that 2 times pi — or what Hartl calls “tau” — is important, but it’s still a multiple of pi, which is a fundamental constant of mathematics, Ivars Peterson, director of publications and communications at the Mathematical Association of America, told me in March.

A multiple of Pi. Boo-yah, Tau Day fans! Do you celebrate either of the mathematical holidays- or maybe another, more obscure math day? Are you having a party in your mom’s basement this year in honor of it with your WoW guild?

Much excitement has been generated today among mathy types and, well, pretty much elementary school teachers because it’s Pi Day. (It’s also Albert Einstein’s birthday.)

If you haven’t made the connection between the date (3.14) and Pi, the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle, you should get on over to the Facebook group for Pi Day and marinate in Pi-related humor, pics, songs and images of celebratory, delicious Pi Pie. (And maybe reconsider breeding.) Believe it or not, Pi Day predates the widespread use of the internet, and was invented in the 80s by San Francisco’s Exploratorium.

Totally feeling the math-centric love on Pi Day? There are shops that sell Pi-amobilia on the internet, including this one that actually transacts in units of Pi. (For instance, the ice cube tray above costs 3 Pi, or $9.42. No, I’m not kidding.) There’s also the standard Pi Day practice of baking and/or buying and eating delicious pies, and pretending that in some way makes you more math friendly.

Are you celebrating Pi Day 2011?

The internet has a habit of inspiring new, geeky holidays, like Square Root Day, National High Five Day, Talk Like a Pirate Day and a favorite among mathletes everywhere, Pi Day.

Pi Day falls on March 14th because of the first digits of Pi- 3.14. Another geeky boon is that the holiday also happens to be the birthday of one of science’s biggest rockstars, Albert Einstein. Many cities and institutions of geekery, like the Maryland Science Center, hold celebrations to party down on the mathiest day of the year. The OC Register points out that not only is the Discovery Science Center hosting a shindig, but some local restaurants are dishing out free pie in honor of Pi Day. San Francisco’s Exploratorium has been Pi partying for over two decades.

The truly geeky, of course, are waiting for Pi Day 2015 for some nerdy reason explained in detail on their Facebook page. If you live in a town full of stupids, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little bit of fun with Pi Day. The Joy of Pi has a wealth of Pi-related links for you to browse. You can also visit the official Pi Day website for ideas.

If you’re still longing for the mathematical high you felt on Square Root Day last week, the wait is almost over: This Saturday, March 14, is National Pi Day. Ready to break out your calculator and celebrate?

Pi Day 2009: The Digits of Pi

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, March 14, 2009 is designated Pi Day because of its numerical date: 3-14, i.e. the mathematical constant of pi. The number 3.14, of course, is actually just a rounded version of the number — the figure itself has an infinite number of digits after its decimal. You can see the first 10,000 of the digits of pi here, if you’re so inclined.

Pi Day Activities

So what’s one to do on National Pi Day 2009, aside from reveling in the joy of 3.14? Some cities are holding official celebrations. You can find a slew of other Pi Day activities for kids at this site by Scholastic. And a detailed history of pi awaits you here. If you’re still itching for mathematical satisfaction, check out this page at the Joy of Pi. It’s bursting with 3.14-related activities and information.

The official Pi Day site also offers e-cards, history info on pi, and pi-related merchandise.

Pi Day is also Albert Einstein’s birthday. You can find a whole kit of games and activities to celebrate Einstein-style here.

Pi Songs

If you want to ring in Pi Day in a low-key fashion, so to speak, you could always try rocking out to the pi song. A guy named Felix Jung took the time to convert pi’s digits into a musical form, and you can help compose the specific tune. Go here.

Or, sit back and relax to the sounds of these Pi Song renditions:
