A movie based on the Halo game franchise? Rubbish idea. I’ve been over this.

An even worse idea? Basing the movie on the Halo novels. The only place in the world you’ll find writing more atrocious than that in the Halo games is in the Halo novels.

The Halo movie has been in the pipeline for years. However, funding from Fox and Universal collapsed in 2007, and would-be director Neill Blomkamp later declared a Halo film unworkable, because of Master Chief’s faceless nature. Cue the sound of a million 37-year-old virgins crying into their Cortana body pillows.

Despite this, the Steven Spielberg-owned DreamWorks is now interested in making a Halo film based on said books, according to sources close to Vulture. I can only imagine a major rewrite would be required to stop this becoming a complete turkey.

Incidentally, I love how everybody lost interest in this project, but now every human being on earth owns a copy of Halo: Reach, DreamWorks suddenly really wants to get involved. Strange that.

Though it’s been declared dead in the water more times than I’ve had hot dinners, some people still want to make a movie based on Halo and draw the last bit of bloodied, lumpy milk from the franchise’s withered teats. Microsoft studio 343 Industries boss Frankie O’Connor parped this to Variety over the weekend, suggesting the Halo movie ‘dream’ is still on:

“We’re still interested in making an excellent Halo movie. We’ve created an awful lot of documentation and materials to support a feature film. We have a good idea of what kind of story we want to tell, but won’t move on it until there’s a great reason to do it. We’re in no particular hurry.”

If you hadn’t already guessed, I’m pretty sure this, like almost any other game-to-movie adaption, will be a disastrous idea.

I say that from the perspective of somebody who used to enjoy the Halo games for their technical excellence and polish, while also knowing they couldn’t tell a story worth a shit. If the games can’t nail a quarter-decent narrative, what chance this inevitable lunker of a movie?

It turns out that the entire rendering of the movie required over 1 Petabyte of storage space which according to Clickbits is the equivalent of 500 hard drives of 2TB each.

The movie was shot and rendered in Miramar, New Zealand, (population 8,334) in one of the most powerful purpose-built data centers in the world (same place they created King Kong and Lord of the Rings). According to Information Management, the computing core – 34 racks, each with four chassis of 32 machines each – adds up to some 40,000 processors and 104 terabytes of RAM. The blades read and write against 3 petabytes of fast fiber channel disk network area storage from BluArc and NetApp.

All the gear sits tightly packed and connected by multiple 10-gigabit network links. “We need to stack the gear closely to get the bandwidth we need for our visual effects, and, because the data flows are so great, the storage has to be local,” says Paul Gunn, Weta’s data center systems administrator.

Now this is totally not going to happen but could imagine the immense amount of creative energies from around the world that would be able to do incredibly creative things is all that data being stored was made available under some sort of Creative Commons copyright.

The idea of artists, filmmakers and other talented people being able to create new and potentially incredible derivative is mind-boggling.

Unfortunately the chances of something this radical ever happening is next t o nil, but one can always hope.

The movie biography of Charles Darwin won’t be seen by anyone in the United States because movie distribution companies are too scared of upsetting the creationist wing nut faction.

Creation, starring Paul Bettany, is the story of Darwin’s struggle between faith and reason during the time that he was writing On The Origin of Species. The movie opened the Toronto Film Festival and will have its London premiere on Sunday (interesting juxtaposition between the man and the “religious” day of rest). The movie has been solid in almost every country in the world with the exception of the US.

Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning producer of Creation, said he was astonished that such attitudes exist 150 years after On The Origin of Species was published.

"That’s what we’re up against. In 2009. It’s amazing," he said.

"The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it’s because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they’ve seen all year, yet nobody in the US has picked it up.

"It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There’s still a great belief that He made the world in six days. It’s quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules.

Kate Winslet’s still on her “I’m all real” kick, this time without Oprah’s encouragement. Even after scooping up two Golden Globes, Kate insists that she’s just a regular mum without her “own plane [..] chef or trainer.”

Here’s more on Kate’s interview with Instyle:

On Being a “Movie Star“: “Please don’t call me that. I don’t feel like a movie star in my life at all, and I don’t particular think I behave like one. I dont have my own plane. I don’t have a chef or a trainer. To me, you’re a movie star only during the time when you’re at the Academy Awards or at an important glamorous event. It’s very much a hat that you wear, and as soon as the event’s over, the hat comes off. I’m back to being Mummy, and that’s my priority.”

On Her One Indulgence: “Literally the one maybe celeb-y thing I do is the occasional facial. That is the only indulgent thing, where I just lie there and relax for an hour. You can’t answer the phone. You can’t get up and make soup. You’ve got to lie there and have somebody make you feel nice.”

On Her Vanity Fair Airbrushing Drama: “There was some speculation in the British press — ‘Has she been under the airbrush again?’ It really kind of got to me. What’s the big deal? If I’m looking good at the moment, just let me look good already! Don’t have a go at me just because I’m not the fat person you always thought I was going to be.”

How can she stay so grounded when she looks this good and has achieved so much?

Nicole Kidman told a Tennessee newspaper, that she loves Nashville and delivers meals on wheels in her spare time, which given the reviews of her most recent movie Australia, she might have a lot more time for.

“I love doing that because it’s just being part of a community,” she says. “That is what is important to both of us, feeling like we’re normal and part of a community.

She also said people don’t always “recognise” her. This is most probably because as Sharon Osbourne said, she has has so much botox, her forehead looks like a “flat schreen tv”.

The Australian press however are whipping themselves into a frenzy about “their Nicole” and her desire for her baby, Sunday Rose to have an “American accent”.

“I’m glad that she is able to say she’s born and bred in Nashville and Tennessee. That is really lovely. I think it’s very appropriate, considering her daddy. His whole life was headed here; from a little boy, he dreamed of coming here. For him to be able to say his baby girl was born here, I think is very special. I hope she has a Southern accent.”

Given the poor kid is called Sunday, she is going to need all the help she can get, so we say the Aussie press should give her a break.

As far as I am concerned one of the worse things ever to afflict our society has been this notion of political correctness. This concept that we must adjust our individual behaviors and attitudes to suit the larger majority has proven to be nothing more than a curse on our society. Our sense of humour, our sense of right and wrong along with our very right to think as individuals without fear of social repercussions has placed us all in a stagnant pool of mediocrity.

A good example of this lose of being able to laugh at things that might be questionable has to be the uproar over a movie being released in France Vilaine (Villain) and one of the movie posters being used to promote it. In the poster we see Mélanie, played by Marilou Berry, with a silly smile on her face holding a cat by the scruff of the neck over an open trashbin.

While the cat in the ad looks rather bored it would seem that the Society for the Protection of Animals in France (SPA) aren’t so amused. Apparently; since we only have their word to go by, the organization has received so many complaints about the ad that they have released a statement describing their shock over the ad imagery.

The thing is that their statement against the ad is couched in such PC speak that it makes me gag as much as the ad made me chuckle. In an interview for The Independent.co.uk a representative said

“While the SPA does not doubt the integrity of Marilou Berry and the production team who have clearly not mistreated any animals, we feel it is clear the producers of Vilaine are not aware of the impact this image may have on a fragile general public.”

Fragile general public - WTF have we all become such weak willed sycophants of political correctness that it has over taken our society. Personally I find a statement like that far more insulting and degrading than any advertising foe a movie that is meant to be funny in the first place.

One has to wonder in these cases just who is really being protect and why. Not to mention that if our fragile society needs to be protected from silliness like this this then we have some real problems.

It should be noted that the two cats used in both the ads and the movie were adopted by the star of the movie.

After Kim Kardashian hurt her toe on a coffee table in her New York hotel room, we’ve been reminded of how painful it is. And even though whining is so boring, I believe that Kim’s in pain: eight hours of dancing certainly won’t help, especially not when you live in heels. Kim gave us the full update through an interview with OK!:

“I’m wearing a heel right now and it felt okay as I was walking up. It’s sorta like I wanna hold it really tight in there. So that’s what I’m doing right now. But I’m gonna go home, take it off, and not finish my night because it hurts too bad.”

Did I also mention that she’s currently filming Disaster Movie Carmen Electra and Vanessa Minnillo right now? Nope, there’s no time to rest– and that’s bad news for queasy people like me who want to barf every time the toe injury is brought up, especially since it was one that made a room look like someone was murdered in it.

I had to take breaks writing this to stop the dizziness.
