According to the McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division of Johnson & Johnson, the latest recall affects certain lots of slow-dissolving Motrin IB 24-count coated caplets, Motrin IB 24-count coated tablets and Motrin IB 24+6 count coated caplets. (The specific lot numbers affected can be found at the bottom of this article)

After testing product samples, the drugmaker found that “some caplets may not dissolve as quickly as intended when nearing their expiration date.”

In total, around 12 million bottles of Motrin IB, manufactured between February 2009 and July 2011, are said to be involved.

McNeil is stressing that this is not a consumer-level recall, meaning that consumers do not need to return the product if they have it, and do not need to dispose of it.

“There is no safety concern if consumers continue taking the product in accordance with its label,” the company wrote in a statement released on its website. ” This action is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse events.”

Consumers with additional questions or concerns regarding the recent Motrin recall may call the McNeil Consumer Call Center at 1-888-222-6036, Monday-Friday, 8am to 8pm (EST).

The following lot numbers for the included products are being recalled, and can be found on the side of the carton label:

You know all the recalls Johnson & Johnson has announced over the past year or so, mostly given to quality control issues in some of their plants? (Earning them several stern rebukes from the FDA?)

Well, it seems that even as they were recalling products left and right, the company also engaged in a “phantom recall”- hiring contractors to purchase up stock of Motrin varieties in shops and gas stations and the like- to avoid negative publicity incurred by announcing a recall. The state of Oregon is now suing the drugmaker for the deliberately deceptive tactics, after one of the contractors hired by the company blew the whistle on the operation:

“[Lynn Walther] told The Oregonian he was assigned to go into local stores, look for certain batch numbers, and buy the offending packets with a credit card provided by his employer… In the Motrin buys, he was told to keep his true purpose secret. On June 23, 2009, he faxed the instruction sheet to the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. The board released a copy to The Oregonian Wednesday.

It said: ‘You should simply ‘act’ like a regular customer when making these purchases. THERE MUST BE NO MENTION OF THIS BEING A RECALL OF THIS PRODUCT!’”

Well, that’s a bit… damning. Problems with the affected varieties of Motrin came to light in late 2008, and the buyback began in early 2009. No formal recall was announced until February of 2010. CEO of Johnson & Johnson William Weldon copped to the “phantom recall” plan during congressional testimony he gave last September. Weldon testified that the company “firmly admits” the surreptitious actions were a “mistake [they] made.”

This not a repeat from November, December, January, April or May- Johnson & Johnson is recalling even more of their over the counter medications.

Johnson & Johnson is recalling an additional 21 lots of Tylenol, Benadryl and Motrin due to the same “moldy, musty odor” that prompted the original recall. Affected by the July 2010 recall are some versions of Children’s Tylenol, as well as adult products Benadryl, Motrin IB, Tylenol Extra Strength, Tylenol Day & Night and Tylenol PM. McNeil says that the risk of adverse effects is low, but there were some reports of gastrointestinal illness such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The recall began back in November with specific lots of a Tylenol arthritis painkiller that was stored on pallets emitting the chemical that caused the off smell in the medications. The recall has expanded several times since the first medications were pulled from shelves, and the FDA has heavily criticized the drug manufacturer for being slow to act when the first reports of illness associated with the affected product occurred.

Expanded information from the manufacturer is available here.

For the second time in the past few months, the FDA has criticized manufacturer Johnson & Johnson for quality control oversights after several medications were produced with “known contamination with gram negative organisms” in a Pennsylvania factory.

43 products were recalled last week including varieties of Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl for infants and children. ABC News describes the nature of the contaminants found in the finished lots of the products:

Preliminary tests have only narrowed down the possible bacterial contaminant to a category of microorganism described as “gram negative,” a broad group that includes many germs potentially harmful to humans.

Although no injuries or illness has been reported stemming from use of the contaminated drugs, consumers report a lax attitude from Johnson & Johnson regarding refunds for the products. And bacterial contamination is not the only quality control issue uncovered at the plant- the drug maker has also come under fire for unsanitary conditions at the factory. The FDA recorded “20 observations of shortcomings” at the facility, which has been shut down indefinitely. The FDA has also not ruled out further action against the company.

In November and December of 2009, Tylenol issued some broad recalls of a number of products including Arthritis Pain Caplets and varieties of Motrin, Rolaids and Benadryl due to a “moldy, musty smell” that caused mild illness in some people.

The FDA criticized Johnson & Johnson after the recall for dragging their feet on disclosing the risks to consumers:

“When something smells bad, literally and figuratively, you aggressively investigate and solve the problem,” said Deborah Autor, director of FDA’s compliance office.

“The company should have acted faster,” Autor said. “All companies have a responsibility to ensure high quality, safety and effectiveness of their products and protect consumers.”

Now Tylenol is recalling another group of medications, due to a spate of manufacturing defects:

Consumers should stop using certain lots of infants’ and children’s Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl products because some of them may contain too much of the active ingredient, McNeil said in a statement late Friday. Other products may contain tiny particles or inactive ingredients that may not meet testing requirements, the company said.

Included in the recall are infants’ and children’s pain and allergy suspension liquids:

Tylenol Infants’ Drops, Children’s Tylenol Suspensions, Infants’ Motrin Drops, Children’s Zyrtec liquid in bottles and Children’s Benadryl Allergy liquids in bottles.

Consumers who believe they may be in possession of recalled medications are advised to stop using the medications and may visit mcneilproductrecall.com for further information.

Remember the recall of Tylenol, specifically Arthritis Pain EZ-open tabs late last month?

The product was recalled due to contamination with a substance that causes vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. While that recall was for a specific variety of Tylenol, it turns out many more medications were affected than originally disclosed to the public by Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Health Care. The FDA claims that the company knew of the issue with 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, thought to stem from exposure to storage pallets, for more than a year but did not take adequate measures to inform the public of the dangers posed by the affected medications.

What’s worse is that the affected number of products ranged far beyond the one variety of Tylenol originally indicated in the recall. Varieties of Motrin, Rolaids and Benadryl- all very popular over the counter medications in wide use across the country- are now also being recalled for the “moldy, musty smell” and ensuing illness experienced by some consumers. The FDA slammed Johnson & Johnson for their slow action in informing consumers about the risks:

“When something smells bad, literally and figuratively, you aggressively investigate and solve the problem,” said Deborah Autor, director of FDA’s compliance office.

“The company should have acted faster,” Autor said. “All companies have a responsibility to ensure high quality, safety and effectiveness of their products and protect consumers.”

Below are some of the specific products named in the recall:

The recalled products include junior strength Motrin, children’s Tylenol grape meltaway tablets, extra strength Tylenol, extra strength Tylenol rapid release gelcaps, extra strength Tylenol PM geltabs, Motrin caplets, extra strength Rolaids fresh mint tablets, St. Joseph Aspirin chewable orange tablets and Benedryl allergy ultratab tablets.

Consumers with products believed to be part of the recall are urged to contact the company at 1-888-222-6036, or log on to www.mcneilproductrecall.com. Johnson & Johnson have also advised consumers with health concerns to “contact their healthcare provider.” However, a large number of Americans lack basic health coverage so it’s likely that many who use Tylenol, Rolaids or Benadryl also lack access to regular prescription medications, forcing them to resort to over the counter solutions.

The so-called “Motrin Moms” a small group of vocal Twitter users protesting against an online ad released for Motrin pain killers has scored a win, with the company forced to withdraw the ad and apologize to the group.

If you missed our coverage yesterday, the small group were upset at a viral tongue in cheek video because among a few things, it dared suggest that wearing your baby in a sling was in fashion…despite the fact that the statement any way you approach it is a statement of fact.

It’s sad really to think that in this day and age that a few vocal people, likely no more than 100 (and possibly less than 50) can spend so much time dedicated to such an unimportant and minor issue, but more importantly shout loudly enough that this is written up by some as a “major PR disaster.” (mental note: remember to shout louder in the future). That they found parts of the ad upsetting I respect, but I do not respect what followed. Most sane people outside the space if they happen to see the story will simply shake their heads in disbelief. Here’s the world according to the Motrin Moms

There’s PR controversy afoot in the blogosphere and Twitter today about a commercial for Motrin, a US brand of Ibuprofen.

The commercial is a little tongue in cheek, referring to the practice of wearing children in a sling or similar as being “in fashion” and talking about the issues related to carrying a child being painful.

You can see the full commercial below. Turns out not everyone out there has an even small sense of humor, and the ad is now being talked about a massive PR blunder. You can track the conversation on Twitter here.

Here’s the thing: seriously? Aren’t there far more important things to get worked up about than a glib comment about carrying a baby in a sling being in fashion (which seems to be the biggest gripe).

Here’s the second thing: wearing a baby in a sling IS IN FASHION. If you’re Gen X, ask YOUR parent about how many of them carried YOU in a sling.

Third: yes, being close to your child is a good thing, but here’s the other thing I know from experience IT F$%@ING HURT MY BACK. It also hurt my wife’s back. We purchased an insanely expensive sling/ child back/ forward thing when our now 6 year old son was born. Between us I reckon it would have been lucky to have been used a dozen times because that’s how much it hurt both our backs.

Honesty people, Motrin is guilty of having a little fun, nothing more, there’s no evil multinational conspiracy to slag you off or insult your child raring. I respect that some of you may not share the joke, but I don’t respect that you’re spending a pile of time on this.

PS: before you start crying “you’re a man, you couldn’t understand” let me warn you in advance that such as statement is sexist (and perhaps the ad is a little as well by only targeting mothers), and secondly, I’m the one at home running around after my son and doing “mom” things.
