Wisconsin Badger running back and Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball was the victim of an “unprovoked” attack on Wednesday morning that landed him in the hospital.

According to Sports Illustrated, the star running back was jumped by five men while walking on Wisconsin’s campus at about 2:15 a.m. this morning. The police report says that Ball was thrown to the ground and kicked several times during an “unprovoked assault. Police do not believe that Ball knew his attackers.

The police report reads: “It does not appear he knew his attackers and this is being investigated as an unprovoked assault.”

After the assault Montee Ball was taken to the hospital. He was released early this morning.

UW’s Athletic Communications office did not specify what injuries Montee received but did say that they expect Ball to make a full recovery.

The Athletic Commission released a statement saying:

“My concern right now is for Montee’s health and well-being. Montee has been released from the hospital and is under the care and supervision of our sports medicine staff. We will continue to evaluate him as we approach the start of fall camp this weekend. I do expect Montee to make a full recovery.”

ESPN reports that Ball rushed for 1,923 yards and set an NCAA-record with 33 touchdowns last season. He was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and was a Heisman Trophy finalist. He’ll be playing his final year with the Badgers this season.
