Seriously this would be one of the most awesome setups one could have. What you are seeing is an AMD setup of 5 monitors in portrait mode all in a row. Powering this incredible video nerdgasim is AMD’s Eyefinity in what they called 5×1 mode.

While I am sure that most folks won’t think all that much of these workspaces there is probably a lot who will start drooling after the first one and not stop until the last. As a confirmed dual monitor user who would never go back to a single monitor setup I can tell you that I had some serious monitor envy as I selected my favorite workspace images found over at Work Design Ledger.

Enjoy the view but I seriously recommend getting a drool towel handy before starting.

This first one was not so much for the desk workspace but rather the incredible workspace environment. Just a beautiful and relaxing place to be able to work I would think.

I still remember when I first hooked up a second monitor and found myself in dual monitor heaven. I wouldn’t ever want to go back to a single monitor unless absolutely forced to. Two monitors as nice as that might be is slowly becoming ‘old school’ as we are slowly getting the tools needed to attach even more monitors to our desktop computers.

Much like the team over at SlipperyBrick did when they heard about HP’s new USB graphics adapter that will let you connect .. get ready for it …. seven monitors and via USB.

Damn.

Their report on this wondrous event can be read on their site but the sort of it is that with the exception of video under certain conditions being problematic the whole experience was rather cool:

What did work well however is any graphics or video that we viewed through a browser or setup as a background display. (We had a little help from UltraMon for the background displays.) We used the Internet Explorer browser and were able to easily view a different web page on each monitor with a different browser instance, and were able to span a single browser across all monitors without noticing even a stutter. We could even open large images in a browser window and span that across all seven displays with little noticeable increase in the processor work.

I have a hard pick on whether to file this under gadgets or under green tech because this kind of monitor could go under either one. The reason for that is that the Eizo FlexScan 20” and 23” monitors turn themselves off and on based on human presence.

Yup .. it’s almost HAL-like but these monitors have a built in sensor that will switch them to standby mode if a human presence isn’t detected for 40 seconds. In this day and age of energy concerns this might be considered a nice bonus when in the market for new monitors. Not too mention the cool factors when showing them off to your friends.

Both of the monitors will be available around May 21 and sell for $385 and $455 respectively.

Monitors that sense your presence is a post from: The Inquisitr

It appears that new Apple hardware is shipping out with “HDCP” anti-copying technology that will prevent the showing of some videos on non-compliant monitors. As the team at TUAW point out

In this case, ‘compliant’ means HDMI or recent-vintage DVI, but even monitors or TVs that support HDCP may not properly negotiate with the DisplayPort connector to give iTunes and QuickTime the all-clear signal (if so, quitting and relaunching iTunes once the display is hooked up may clear the playback hold). Equally annoying: HDCP is only supposed to apply to ‘high-value’ digital streams, meaning standard-def purchases and rentals on the iTunes store should be out of scope… but some reports indicate that both the HD and SD instances are flagged, blocking playback on anything but the laptop’s internal display or a straight-thru HDMI connection. Argh!

As Cory Doctorow pointed out on Boing Boing this doesn’t have anything to do with copyright law per se

Best part: the list of “compliant” monitors will change over time: the monitor you buy today can be “revoked” tomorrow and stop working.

Slashdot says that Apple’s added “copyright protection” to its video. But copyright law isn’t violated when you watch a movie on an “unapproved” monitor. This isn’t about enforcing copyright law, it’s about giving a small handful of movie companies a veto over hardware designs.

Sorry but you get no sympathy from me on this and the next time you start making fun of Windows users I’ll just point you to this post and suggest you STFU.
