The advent of mobile phones, especially with text messaging, is making it easier for everyone to communicate. We send and receive text messages from anywhere.

In fact, this woman took it a notch higher by sending a text message during her own wedding.

The wedding videographer, Jim Costa, caught the bride pulling the cellphone straight from the top of her dress, seemed to read a text message, and responding by simply using her one hand.

“It was otherwise perfectly normal except for this one funny clip of the bride texting just after her dad walked her down the aisle! At one point, I noticed her doing it through my lens and I had to pull away form the camera to make certain I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. The minister was busy reading his opening comments and her back was to everyone in attendance. I was the only one to see her. Her dad glanced over at her and then saw me doing a double take and began to laugh out loud!”

We can just hope that no texting happened during the honeymoon.

The Samsung M6560, also known as the “Lindy” debuted today and while it doesn’t offer the sleek appearance of an iPhone or various Android based phones, it does have a “sporty” appeal with enough of a consumer appeal that it should be fairly popular for the phone manufacturer.

The Lindy also features some nice attributes, including 3G with video calling, a 3MP camera that comes equipped with autofocus and WiFi alongside a decent price of $221 (available only in Portugal).

Given that there is a demographic of buyers who want more “sporty looking” devices than those offered by Google, Apple, RIM and other manufacturers, this device could actually be a small victory if Samsung offers it in the U.S. and especially if the price is driven down to the $99 or lower mark with carrier subsidizing.

It appears that the US Government doesn’t think that it’s a good idea to use any of your electronic equipment like laptops and mobile phones after you return from a trip to China. In fact they suggest that you use separate equipment all together for your trip and then wipe it clean afterwards.

Such was the case when Mark Bregman, chief technology officer at Symantec, was advised by some “three-letter agencies in the US Government” to buy a mobile phone in the US and throw it away when he returned. This is on top of the fact that he already uses a separate MacBook Air for his trips to China – which the agencies also suggested he weight before leaving and again on returning – which he reimages every time he returns home.

Bregman said the US was also concerned about its companies employing Chinese coders, particularly in security.

He said the "software supply concern" was due to fears that Chinese developers would insert malicious code into software sold to American companies or the US government.

The mobile computing industry is a landscape segmented by corporate thinking that they are the end all, be all and that the carriers in the business need to be the ones controlling everything from the platforms used and the content that is available. Everyone from AT&T through to Qwest treat the mobile marketplace as their own individual private fiefdoms to lock users into and extort as much money from them as possible.

As Tom Conrad, chief technology officer for Pandora, said at the recent VentureBeat conference on the mobile world

Pandora chief technology officer Tom Conrad said some wireless carriers are still grappling with the question of whether to think of themselves as media companies or as more of a utility.

“Will carriers become pipes or will they continue to be media companies?” he said. “They’re realizing it’s not the worst end game if they are disintermediated of their desire to become giant media companies and instead become the best wireless backbone,” he said.

This is something that is obviously on the mind’s of the people at Sprint as they have seen the explosion surround the iPhone and the Google Android. Amidst the lackluster sales of Sprint’s mobile partner Palm and their Pre handset a possible re-evaluation of where their best efforts business wise is apparently underway in Sprint’s boardroom.

Our first clue to this re-evaluation comes from the company’s vice president of strategy, Russ McGuire, when he admitted that the carriers themselves might be causing an impediment to growth and innovation. He suggests that the carriers need to “let go” and allow the industry to move at a natural pace.

“We need to let go of demanding permission,” said Russ McGuire, Sprint’s vice president of strategy. “You don’t want to move at carrier speed. You want to move at Valley speed.”

[….]

“It’s a fundamental change in our nature, but we need to keep pushing that and riding that and not be an impediment to the growth of the industry,” McGuire said.

While I wouldn’t hold my breath that we will see any concrete changes coming any time soon to the way that carriers like Sprint, Verizon or AT&T do business it is encouraging to see comments like these because it shows that the companies are realizing that a change is coming. Hopefully a change that will see a more ubiquitous user experience when it comes to the consumer experience and the mobile computing world.

Being unemployed can be an hell of a stressful time for anyone except maybe for the CEOs with their millions of dollars cushions to rest their fat asses on. For the rest of us though life in general gets a lot harder. With having to figure out just how you are going to be able to pay all those bills and still have a home to live in is enough to drive anyone off the deep end.

So it was interesting to read that Virgin Mobile has instituted a new service for their customers. The service is called the Pink Slip Protection and customers on Virgin’s $49.95 monthly unlimited plan you can use the service to help pay your phone bill with Virgin while you are laid off. The only other stipulation is that you must be receiving unemployment benefits.

The doctors say spending too much time with the device pressed against your face could cause something called “mobile phone dermatitis.” It happens when the body develops an allergic reaction to the nickel-filled surface of the phones, they say, and has been seen on cheeks and ears around the world.

But wait, there’s more!

“In theory it could even occur on the fingers if you spend a lot of time texting on metal menu buttons,” the doctors’ statement says.

Wonder if there’s any research showing how many ulcers are being caused by all the worry over cell phone health studies…

You’ll soon be able to recharge your cell phone by going for a walk.

M2E Power — a startup in Boise, Idaho — has announced plans for an “external charger” for phones and other mobile devices. The thing actually uses electromagnetic fields to turn your motion into storable electric energy.

The company claims six hours of any sort of motion — running, walking, or any other, erm, physical activities that might come to mind — will churn up enough energy to keep your phone on for up to a full hour (and for a minimum of 30 minutes).

M2E execs say they’re talking with several major mobile companies to work out branding and distribution details. The chargers are expected to be on store shelves by next year. So far, though, no word on how much they might cost.

On a side note, M2E is also working to put its technology to use in military and first responder applications — something that actually makes a whole lot of sense. Engineers are conceiving motion-powered systems for radios, night vision equipment, even weapon scopes and mine detectors for combat usages.

M2E has been around since 2006.
