Bombshell Mixed Martial Arts fighter Gina Carano is staring in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, which opened this weekend with more than 9 million dollars in ticket sales.

Carano stars as Mallory Kane a Black Ops private contractor sold out by the clandestine group she works for. Soderbergh, who has a knack for making movies where the star is a strong female, first saw Carano in 2008 when the MMA star was at the height of her game in the ring.  He was enchanted by her ferocious fighting style aand yet she was beautiful at the same time.

Soderbergh had the following to say about Carano,

“This was a type of fighting that I’d never watched before and I thought Gina was extraordinary. She had incredible presence and she seemed like a really unique combination of elements. When I saw her, I started thinking how I could build something around her and that’s when I started thinking about putting her in a very male-dominated world to navigate through physically and philosophically.”

She was at the top of her game in 2008 and in 2009 had signed on to the remake of American Gladiators to star as gladiator Crush.  At this time Soderberg tracked her down for the role.

Carano had just lost a huge brawl for the featherweight championship in American Strikeforce and decided to retreat to her San Diego home.  She only agreed to meet with Soderbergh because her agent told her that he had directed Traffic which had been one of her favorite movies.

Carano said of their meeting,

“I had to pick him up at the San Diego train station and he’s wearing a cap, glasses, jeans. I didn’t know anything about Hollywood or directors or anybody else in this world. Needless to say, I had no idea who he was. We sat and had a really great discussion, just two normal people, and at the end of it he asked me if I wanted to be in a movie.”

It’s a dream scenario every actor prays for, but Carano, in her unassuming way, said she was just grateful that someone was willing to hire her for anything after the beating she’d taken on cable television a week earlier.

While a great many of our citizens can’t get married in their respective states, reality show star Brandi Glanville says that her quickie, loveless wedding was “super fun,” and that neither she nor her wayward groom, Darin Harvey, plan to follow through with legalizing the marriage.

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but it seems kind of crass to comport oneself in such a manner when so many people are fighting for their civil rights. Glanville did acknowledge as much on her Twitter page, when she began clocking all the replies to her Vegas nuptials. Glanville responded to fans that had pointed out the whole “gay people can’t get married” thing in response to her “vows,” and Glanville said:

“were just friends! I will get married for real when everyone in the world that wants to can! …Its a new day & i’ve been reading all my replies & just wanna say I’m taking all ur comments seriously! Ringing in the new yr in Vegas w/ my gals & BFF of many yrs @darinharvey was SO much fun & we got carried away by getting married! I didn’t realize what we did wuld affect others so seriously! in my head I was just having fun w/ my best friend who I adore & has been there for me during all my tuff times!”

Glanville continues:

“I didnt mean to offend anyone! I beleive everyone shud be able to get married & maybe even embarass themselves in Vegas . This yr has been rreat for me in many ways! Im gr8ful for all the ppl I met thru RHOBV. Bare w/ me, Im gonna make mistakes, but I always learn from them! xob”

Glanville and Harvey have reportedly been friends for 20 years, but there is “nothing romantic” between the pair.

While poor straight people were busy defending the much-embattled institution of marriage against the encroaching gays wishing to take their relationships to the legally-sanctified level, Mark Cibrian’s ex and Real Housewives star Brandi Glanville went off and got accidentally, drunkenly married in Las Vegas.

The union is, however, a star-crossed one- while Glanville seemed to tweet supportively about it at first, the union hit a rough patch around hour twelve. And the couple threw their all into the next few hours, working tirelessly on their marriage, before calling it quits a few hours later. Nah, that’s not really what happened- Twitter tells the story of two people who (one possessing the necessary penis, and the other, a vagina) got trashed on Patron and made a stupid decision in Vegas.

Glanville really did seem to be excited, at least through the haze of tequila- but Harvey was immediately and vocally regretful about his decision to wed the reality-show star. Glanville tweeted:

“My new husband is @darinharvey he is a great guy he manages MMA fighters his star is @RondaRoussey the best female MMA fighter on the planet… It wasn’t planned and we will handle it, but good times!”

And then somberly:

“I’m married again- suuuuuuck it!”

Whereas Harvey spoke of a lost hour in which the wedding apparently occurred. He began:

“Such a fun night with my fbff @BrandiGlanville… @BrandiGlanville new years eve 2012 pic.twitter.com/bmCrEtTi…”

Immediately following with some plausible deniability as well as some apparent pre-nup panic:

“@BrandiGlanville did we really do it. remember Elvis then blacked out. Did I have you sign anything”

Harvey then tweeted about waking up “alone,” and tweeted of the woman who last said she was a “medicated mess” on the most recent Real Housewives episode:

“it’s a big blur bottle of Patron Elvis now I’m married. At least shes hot and sane.”

But Harvey’s placid reaction did not last. He soon started up tweeting again, adding several times that he planned an annulment as soon as is humanly possible:

“Don’t worry @BrandiGlanville and I had a crazy Vegas moment. Getting annulled tomorrow… no worries was a drunken BFF thing getting annulled… Everyone chill @BrandiGlanville and I were a bit ffffed in Vegas wanted to do something crazy so we did. Getting annulled still bff’s…”

See the pathetic looking mugshot above? That’s the hilarious outcome of a robbers attempt to steal from a mixed martial arts expert and ultimate fighter.

Anthony Miranda, a convicted felon, attempted to hold up a vehicle at 11:30 p.m on Friday by asking the driver or a lighter, when the drive said he didn’t have one the criminal pulled a handgun on the victim and demanded money.

A police report says the driver handed over all of his cash but was then told to get out of the car. When Miranda lost his focus the victim grabbed the gun, causing Miranda to shoot himself in the ankle.

The mixed martial arts specialist then pinned Miranda down to the ground and beat him to a bloody pulp until police arrested Miranda and took him to the hospital for treatment.

Anthony Miranda has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm (which resulted in his own injury). Miranda is being held on $350,000 bond in Chicago, IL.

Is this the dumbest criminal story you’ve heard in 2011? It may not be the most hair brained scheme I’ve read about but it’s always nice seeing the scum of the earth get what’s coming to them.

MMA fighter Kurt Pellegrino has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts after suffering a defeat on Saturday to 25-year-old Brazilian fighter Patricky Freire.

Felled by an early punch Pellegrino took to the ground and grabbed Freire’s leg as the brazilian continues to punch at the now retired MMA fighter.

Shocking the crowd and a stunned Pellegrino the referee broke up the fight as Pellegrino continued to defend himself.

Although it was obvious that he believed the defeat was called prematurely Pellegrino was gracious in his loss, raising his hand to Freire while shaking a finger in disgust at the hissing crowd.

Later on he joked about his loss:

“I lost fair and square.”

After the fight Pellegrino said:

“I started my career in Atlantic City and I wanted to end it in Atlantic City too.”

In May Pellegrino announced a hiatus from the sport and then returned following the birth of his son Kurt Jr.

Pellegrino does have a fall back plan, he currently owns Pellegrino Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Lake Como and Inferno Training and Performance Center in Marlboro

If he remains retired Kurt Pellegrino will end with a 16-7 professional record. His career includes some major victories against the likes of Mac Danzig and Josh Neer.  A Brazilian Jui-Jitsu black belt his victories include 10 wins by submission and two knockouts.

UFC 139 saw one of the finest mixed martial art match-ups in memory, as Dan Henderson edged to a narrow triumph over Brazil’s Mauricio Rua. It was a bout that left both men bloodied and battered.

All three judges gave Henderson the victory by 48-47, but not before Rua spent the last two rounds dominating the fight. It would have been a remarkable comeback for Rua, who was in turn almost overcome by Henderson in the first two rounds.

In the opener, Henderson had Rua against the cage and was close to a standing chokehold submission early on. A series of right-hand punches to Rua’s head opened a cut above the Brazilian’s left eye, as the fight looked to be heading in only one direction.

While the second round was less frantic, Henderson still controlled proceedings, bloodying Rua’s nose. As Henderson said after the fight, before being taken to hospital: “I should have had him finished there. His tank was running low there.”

In the next round, Rua was knocked to the floor by a powerful right hand shot, but almost gained a submission hold by grabbing Henderson’s left foot while on the canvas. Towards the end of the third round, Rua dispatched a volley of scoring punches as he pushed Henderson against the cage.

For the final two rounds, it was a different story, with Rua controlling the pace of the fight, wobbling Henderson with a hard right in the fourth, and getting on top of him in the fifth to deliver a succession of blows to the head.

Yet Henderson held on, just – even more remarkable, considering this was his first fight in UFC for two years. Now aged 41, he had left the sport in 2009.

The fight was immediately declared a classic, with UFC President Dana White stating:

“That’s without a doubt one of the top three best fights ever in MMA. I have so much respect for both of those guys to dig down that deep in a five-round fight. That was like our Ali-Frazier III. It was incredible.”

A Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter has been charged with murder after beating then killing his friend by ripping his heart out.

Jarrod Wyatt is believed to have been under the influence of drugs when he attacked and killed his friend Taylor Powell in Del Norte County, Northern California back in March. Wyatt believed that Powell was the devil, and killing him was an effort to rid the world of satan (no, we’re not making this up.)

Injuries to Powell included an 18inch hole in his chest, his heart, eyeballs and tongue removed, and his face beaten to the point that he wasn’t recognizable.

Along with a charge of first degree murder, Wyatt is also facing a charge of torture as well.

Jarrod Wyatt’s only professional MMA fight was in January this year where he defeated Seth Stanfill in Resurrection Cage Fights in a first round knock out.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship return to the MGM Grand in Vegas Saturday night for UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans. As always, we have the results, but if you don’t want them yet, skip straight to the video.

The top of the card saw Rampage-Evans fight for the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. The scheduled fight with Antônio Rogério Nogueira saw Griffin replaced by Jason Brilz due to injury.

The Rampage-Evans fight lasted three rounds with Rampage winning in a unanimous decision.

In a night of one sided results, Chael Sonnen dominated Nate Marquardt, earning a shot at the middleweight title in an impressive unanimous decision victory. Matt Serra didn’t wait for a points decision though, with first-round knockout of Frank Trigg.

UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez saw the Ultimate Fight Championship head to Memphis, Tennessee Saturday evening (December 12). As always if you don’t want to know the results, go straight to the video.

BJ Penn took on Diego Sanchez for the UFC lightweight title, with Penn favored to win. Penn didn’t disappoint, winning via TKO (cut) in round 5 to retain the UFC Lightweight Championship.

In the shortest fight of the night, Frank Mir destroyed Cheick Kongo in under two minutes with a left hook that knocked him off his feet.

UFC 107 sees the UFC head to the the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee Saturday night with the lead fight seeing BJ Penn taken on Diego Sanchez for the UFC lightweight title.

Other highlights for the night include a heavyweight fight between Cheick Kongo and Frank Mir, and a lightweight bout featuring Clay Guida and Kenny Florian.

The Weigh-Ins Friday weren’t without that little something extra: 6 fighters had to strip off to nothing to make weight. The Tennessee State Athletic Commission also stopped the process a number of times to check the scales given how regularly the fighters were struggling to make weight.

The UFC returned to its home town of Las Vegas Saturday night for UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2. As always, we have the results but if you don’t want to know, skip down the page to the video.

The lead bout saw the rematch between Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin who last fought each other in April 2006 in a fight still warmly remembered by UFC fans.

The result of UFC 106 saw a reverse of the previous fight, with Griffin defeating Ortiz via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28) in what some are calling a contriversial decision. Griffin lost the first two rounds before coming back and dominating Tito in the third.

UFC heavy weight champ Brock Lesnar is said to have returned home Tuesday following surgery to treat a bacterial infection in his intestine.

Lesnar was reported to have been admitted to hospital with a mystery illness November 15, with news of the surgery for an intestinal issue November 17.

Reports on the success of Lesnar’s surgery are mixed. One report quotes a friend who says that Lesnar may need to undergo further surgery depending on how he recovers, and a decision on his future in the ring would be decided then.

Lesnar’s coach is quoted as saying that the champ “much better than he was” and was “feeling better. He’s at home, that’s where he wants to be.” The coach confirmed that Lesnar may require further surgery, but went on to say that “his goal is to get back and get back in the cage.”

The much-anticipated heavyweight bout in The Ultimate Fighter between Kimbo Slice and Roy Nelson has ended in a technical knockout win to Nelson, in disappointingly tame scenes more reminiscent of a playground fight between fat kids scrapping over lunch than a martial arts display.

Roy Nelson – who is an experienced mixed martial arts performer but looks to be carrying a lot more body fat than the Internet darling Kimbo Slice – won the bout by sitting his bulky belly down on Slice’s body and raining a series of pillow-soft blows into his head.

Nelson caught Slice in a crucifix hold, so called because one man lays cross-wise to the other as he holds him down. Slice has had problems with the “ground game” before, notably in his bout with James Thompson last year where a similar crucifix hold in the second round was broken up by the referee. Slice is known to be much more comfortable on his feet going toe to toe with his opponent, which is a signficant weakness in MMA.

Referee Herb Dean’s controversial stoppage deals a huge blow to the popular Slice’s chances of making it big in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, in a decision that owes more the highly technical form of Greco-Roman wrestling than the glitzy, knock-em-sock-em world of MMA bouts.
