After Susan G. Koken decided to screw over Planned Parenthood this week by pulling funding from the programs breast cancer screening service an unlikely hero has emerged in New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg.

The billionaire mayor on Thursday pledged $250,000 of his own money to the agency with the stipulation that it only be used for breast cancer screening services.

It turns out that the Komen fund pull may actually be benefiting Planned Parenthood as pledges from agencies and individuals donors have surged over the last several days. According to the women’s agency they require nearly $700,000 to make up for the money taken away form them by Susan G. Komen.

Speaking of his donation Bloomberg proclaimed:

“Politics have no place in health care. Breast cancer screening saves lives and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care. We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way.”

Bloomberg’s comment regarding politics is a direct jab at a Komen board member who said on Wednesday that the organizations decision to pull funds from Planned Parenthood after Representative Cliff Stearns, Republican of Florida launched a witch hunt against the organization for which many experts believe no hurtful information will be found. Stearns is delaying Planned Parenthood’s actions by request 10 years worth of documents.

In responding to Mayor Bloomberg’s donation Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America released the following statement:

“On behalf of hundreds of thousands of women nationwide who rely on Planned Parenthood for breast cancer education and screening, we are enormously grateful to Mayor Bloomberg. This contribution will help ensure that politics don’t interfere with women having access to health care. People all across the country have stepped forward in the last 48 hours to offer help and support, and the mayor’s donation will help ensure that no woman is denied breast cancer services because of right-wing political pressure campaigns.”

Are you impressed by Michael Bloomberg’s efforts to help Planned Parenthood?

Now that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has evicted Occupy Wall Street protesters from Zuccotti Park co-founder of the movement Micah White is speaking out, praising the mayor for his move.

Speaking about the eviction Micah said on Monday:

“I just can’t believe how stupid Bloomberg can be!”

Micah goes on to state:

“This means escalation. A raising of the stakes. It’s one step closer to, you know, a revolution.”

White and his founding Occupy partner Kalle Lasn say they had feared that the movement was beginning to lose some of it’s momentum until Bloomberg made the monumental eviction misstep which only heightened the movement by allowing them to lash out at the cities billionaire mayor.

According to the New Yorker protesters were prepared to claim a victory and then spend the winter months coming up with a new “phase” for the movement, instead the eviction led to the end of Phase I (marches, meetings, signs, camps) and the beginning of Phase II which will include ”surprise attacks against business as usual.” Lasn also says that he suspects that Occupy protests will be ”more intense and visceral, depending on how the Bloombergs of the world react.”

Speaking to NYMag Lasn said:

“The chessboard has been overturned, and now a new game begins!” while telling the magazine about Phase II, “The stakes are so much higher this time. First, we need to let the dust settle.”

If you’re already an Occupy protesters do you plan to continue on to phase II as it launches against “business as usual?”

It turns out that whole “huddled masses” statement still holds partially true in New York City where Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Monday that “Occupy Wall Street” protesters are free to stay at Zuccotti Park indefinitely.

Zuccotti Park is just a few short blocks away from Wall Street and according to New York’s Mayor:

“The bottom line is—people want to express themselves,” while he adds, “And as long as they obey the laws, we’ll allow them to.”

The announcement is a 180 degree turn for New York’s Mayor who last week spoke out against the occupiers for criticizing banks.

When asked how long he believes the protesters will stay he says:

“I think part of it has probably to do with the weather.”

In the meantime park owner Brookfield Office Properties is not offering comments after last week complaining that the parks ban on tents and sleeping bags was being ignored while sanitary conditions had already “reached unacceptable levels.”

Do you think the Occupy Wall Street protesters will remain in the city when winter conditions bring freezing temperatures, snow storms and other hazardous conditions?

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Tuesday that the city has added 70 new electric vehicles to their fleet. The mayor also announced plans to educate his city’s citizens about the benefits of electric automobiles.

With the new additions New York City has the largest fleet of clean-air electric vehicles in the world with 430 automobiles at their disposal.

Speaking at a press conference Bloomberg said:

“This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the city’s fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation,” while adding, “We will continue to lead by example, but we also must provide New Yorkers with tools to make environmentally friendly choices in their own lives.”

Among the cities purchases were 50 Chevrolet Volts, 10 Ford Transit Connects and 10 Navi-Star “E-Star” trucks.

According to Bloomberg:

“We expect each Volt, for example, to save more than 4,000 gallons of gasoline over its lifetime…Which, at current fuel costs, translates into $15,000 in savings for taxpayers, and because electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than gas powered vehicles we also expect them to last longer. And so we believe that these new vehicles will be in use for up to 10 years, another savings.”

The vehicles will be used by various workers including Police, Fire and Transportation officials among others.

Bloomberg and the men are wasting no time with the marriage as the wedding will occur the same day the law comes into effect.

Mayor Bloomberg recently released a statement stating that the record snow fall in New York City has become quite the expensive occurrence for the metropolitan area, costing up to $1 million per inch.

Those numbers take into account the cost of employing 4200 workers charged with removing the snow and for fueling and maintaining 1600 plows owned and operated by the city.

Given the amount of snow that has fallen just in the month of February, the city could end up spending upwards of $30 million or more on snow removal during the shortest month of the year. While the cost of lost business and wages could push the cost of the storm much higher.
