Back in December, there was talk that Michael Bay would be returning to direct Transformers 4, but the explosion-loving director didn’t seem so sure at the time. Now it’s official.

Bay announced over on his website that he will, in fact, be returning to direct Transformers 4 as part of a two-picture deal with Paramount Pictures. Additionally, Bay revealed that Paramount is aiming for a June 2014 release date for the film.

Don’t expect Transformers 4 to be exactly like the previous films, and not just because Shia LeBouf is apparently “adamant” about not doing another Transformers film; producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told MTV that Transformers 4 will be a reboot of the franchise–or, as he puts it, an evolution.

“I think the challenge there is that we are really going to do a reboot and what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet,” di Bonaventura told MTV News.

“Again, it’s a hybrid because it’s a funny thing. I’m not involved with ‘Spider-Man,’ but what I perceive ‘Spider-Man’ to be is just a redoing of the whole thing. [‘Transformers’ is] not. It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, yet there will be a lot of new cast,” he said. “Whether there’s anybody from the first cast, we don’t even know yet. The trust is it’s going to be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along are Optimus and Bumblebee, I’m sure.”

Before Michael Bay can get started on Transformers 4, he’s working on ‘Pain and Gain‘, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. The film, based on a true story, tells the tale of a group of bodybuilders who take to using their muscle to kidnap, torture, and murder.

“Right now I’m not decided on Transformers 4…,” Bay wrote early Wednesday morning on his website’s forums. “Studio’s are passing rumors but I’m not sure what I’m doing? I know I’m going to do Pain and Gain early spring but that’s it for right now. I’m leaving all my options on the table. I’ve got several Studio meetings in the next two weeks.”

Well that about clears it up… or not.

All we can tell from that message is that Pain and Gain, an adaptation of a three-part New Times story about a gang of Miami bodybuilders who were hunted down by a private eye after kidnapping, torturing and robbing a Florida man, is Michael Bay’s next movie.

As to the “Right now…” in the message title, it just means there is no deal as of right now. It doesn’t mean there won’t be one.

MTV News reports that while Bay’s decision to direct is still up in the air, so is a replacement for the film’s lead, Shia LaBeouf.

While there were initial reports floating around that Jason Statham (Crank) would be placed in the lead role for possible fourth and fifth installments, the actor has since rejected those rumors.

If Bay does, in fact, sign on to the fourth Transformers film in an official capacity, they would likely start filming after Pain and Gain wraps in winter 2012.

Michael Bay, the director of the Transformer movies announced on his website that the newest installment, Transformers 3, will hit theaters on July 1st 2011, well ahead of the expected 2012 date.

Bay also responded to claims by his leading lady Megan Fox that  “working with Michael Bay is not about an acting experience” and that her and costar Shia LaBeouf  “almost die when we make a ‘Transformers’ movie… He has you do some really insane things that insurance would never let you do.”

In response to her comments Bay had this to say:

“Megan Fox, welcome back. I promise no alien robots will harm you in any way during the production of this motion picture.” He goes on to say, “Please consult your Physician when working under my direction because some side effects can occur, such as mild dizziness, intense nausea, suicidal tendencies, depression, minor chest hair growth, random internal hemorrhaging and inability to sleep. As some directors may be hazardous to your health, please consult your Doctor to determine if this is right for you.”

On a side note, apparently the director of Jennifer’s Body also asked Megan to not act in any convincing type of manner, perhaps she should look for better scripts or just learn how to act.

Director Michael Bay has taken Megan Fox down a peg over her suggestion that his movies don’t offer acting opportunities.

“Well, that’s Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she’s 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do. You roll your eyes when you see statements like that and think, ‘Okay Megan, you can do whatever you want. I got it,’” Bay said in an interview this week.

“I 100% disagree with her. Nick Cage wasn’t a big actor when I cast him, nor was Ben Affleck before I put him in Armageddon. Shia LaBeouf wasn’t a big movie star before he did Transformers — and then he exploded. Not to mention Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, from Bad Boys. Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in Transformers. I like to think that I’ve had some luck in building actors’ careers with my films.”
