Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of Malcolm X, was murdered over a $1,200 bar tab, according to a city prosecutor in Mexico City, Mexico.

The 28-year-old was beaten by alleged attackers David Hernández Cruz and Manuel Alejandro Pérez de Jesús. The waiters who worked at the Palace Club reportedly approached Shabazz and proceeded to initiate an attack.

Malcolm Shabazz was killed after suffering fatal skull and jaw and rib fractures from the vicious attack.

Two more employees who are believed to have participated in the attack are still being sought out by police officers.

Malcolm had traveled from Tijuana to Mexico City and on Thursday night he headed out on the town with Miguel Suárez, a Mexican labor activist whom Mr. Shabazz had befriended in the United States.

An argument over the large $1,200 tab allegedly broke out around 3 am. The two men were eventually separated by bar employees, and Mr. Shabazz was then beaten with a blunt object. After being taken to another part of the bar, Miguel Suárez was robbed but managed to escape and call police.

Looking for a genuine scare this Halloween? You might have to travel a little ways, but the Isla de las Munecas (or Island of the Dolls) is pretty much guaranteed to creep you out.

La Isla de las Munecas is in the greater Mexico City neighborhood of Xochimilco, on the shore of Lake Xochimilco, reports the International Business Times. The borough is broken up by canals and artificial islands, but the part about this little Unesco World Heritage site and popular tourist spot that garners the most attention is a plot of land owned by Julián Santana Barrera.

La Isla de las Munecas looks like a scene straight out of a horror film, and not one of those big-budget types. No, La Isla de las Munecas looks like a Blair Witch-style “found footage” set piece, featuring hundreds of discarded dolls nailed to trees.

Many of these dolls are disembodied, dismembered, covered in dirt, missing limbs, eyes, etc. Some of the dolls have been unabashedly mutilated with burned or smashed faces, and others play host to swarms of insects.

Yeah, La Isla de las Munecas is that scary.

Scarier still is the story behind the scene. Barrera is reportedly a bit of a superstitious loner, and put up the dolls to appease the spirit of a girl who drowned in the canal. Whether or not there was indeed a girl who drowned there is up for debate, but the point is, he believed it, and created La Isla de las Munecas to ward off evil. Furthermore, Barrera actually drowned in the canal himself, according to WebUrbanist. We’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

Besides Cuba and Mexico City no other place in the Roman Catholic region has such liberal abortion laws, BBC reports.

After 14 hours of debate, Uruguay’s Chamber of Deputies voted 50-49 on Tuesday night, moments before midnight. Many lawmakers on both sides of the debate left because in good conscience could not vote alongside their parties, USA Today reported.

President Jose Mujica said he would approve the law if the Senate approves the changes to the law. In December, the Senate approved a much more liberal version of the abortion measure.

Abortion in the majority of Latin America is only allowed in cases of rape, when the woman’s body is threatened or if the fetus is greatly malformed.

Currently in Uruguay, women who have abortions and those who assist with the abortion will face prison time. In the nation, only cases of rape or when the life of the woman is in peril merit abortions.

Physicians in 2006 at the School of Medicine, University of the Republic in Montevideo, found that 29 percent of maternal deaths in the nation were due to unsafe abortions, NPR reports.

The measure would allow abortions per request of the woman after she has seen a physician, psychologist and a social worker who would provide her with information on any risks or alternatives, like adoption.

After requesting an abortion, the woman would have to wait five days before having the procedure.

Similarly in 2008, another abortion measure was debated and approved by the Congress but then vetoed by President Tabare Vasquez.

Opinion polls express most people in the country approve the measure, although opposition remains strong.

Justin Bieber might soon upstage a Beatle. Officials in Mexico City are predicting that Bieber’s upcoming free concert could end up attracting more visitors than Paul McCartney’s May 10 concert in the city’s central plaza. McCartney attracted more than 200,000 people when he performed his free concert.

In preparation for the Bieber concert 5,000 police officers will be on hand for the event in order to make sure the crowd of pre-teen and teenage girls does not get out of hand.

Also in attendance will be two helicopters, four rings of barriers and 500 portable toilets.

While only 80,000 people will be given direct access to the plaza, thousands more are expected to watch the Justin Bieber show from giant screens that will be erected on neighboring streets.

Putting the protection of Justin Bieber into perspective, Paul McCartney was guarded by 1,400 police officers when he performed his show in Bogota, Colombia.

Justin Bieber is no stranger to high stress gigs, several countries have threatened in recent months to cancel the singers performances after realizing the type of riots that could ensue when Justin Bieber lands in their region.

While all 6,000 police officers will not stand guard next to Justin Bieber they will be responsible for keeping the peace throughout the day and concert.

Justin Bieber is definitely not the Beatles but the attention he is receiving has not been witnessed in the entertainment industry for years.

How big is your manger? Most nativity sets take up some counter space, but the record breaking Christmas scene in Mexico City covers an entire parking lot.

The Mexico City nativity scene has just been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest nativity set. According to MSNBC, the recreation of Jesus’ birth in Mexico cost $2 million to create,  covers 215,000 square feet, includes more than 5,000 figures, and recreates 57 biblical passages related to the birth of Jesus.

According to Fox News, the nativity scene has set two Guinness World records. It is the largest one in the world and it contains the most figures. The scene was created in the parking lot of the giant Azteca stadium and is bigger than four football fields.

Mayor Marcelo Ebrard who unveiled the giant nativity last week, said that the project was created with the help of engineers, historians, and architects over the course of 70 days.

The majority of Mexico’s population celebrates Christmas. According to MSNBC, more than 80 percent of people in Mexico identify themselves as Catholics, with another 9 percent saying that they are a variation of Protestant Christians. Christianity isn’t the official religion of Mexico but Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter are national holidays.

Organizers expect more than a million people to come visit the world’s largest Nativity set which will be open from now until January 15th.

Marriage isn’t what it used to be. The honored tradition of a man and a woman vowing to love each other until death parts them, is so… ancient history. More and more places around the world are now allowing gay marriages and we could soon see cities, like Mexico City, allowing temporary marriage licenses.

Mexico City is currently mulling around the idea of a temporary marriage license. With half of marriages ending in divorce anyway in Mexico, a temporary marriage license could eliminate the hassle that comes with separation.

Leonel Luna, the Mexico City assemblyman who co-authored the bill, said that the minimum marriage contract would be two years. After the contract expires a couple could renew their vows or agree to go their separate ways.

Luna said:

“The proposal is, when the two-year period is up, if the relationship is not stable or harmonious, the contract simply ends… You wouldn’t have to go through the tortuous process of divorce.”

Reuters reports that the temporary marriage contract would include provisions on how to handle money, property, and children if the contract isn’t renewed. Luna says that his proposal is gaining momentum, although he admits that the church is less than supportive.

Hugo Valdemar, spokesman for the Mexican archdiocese, said:

“This reform is absurd. It contradicts the nature of marriage. It’s another one of these electoral theatrics the assembly tends to do that are irresponsible and immoral.”

Reports say that passengers were bussed away from the hjiacked Aeromexico 737 flight this afternoon, but crew remains onboard as government officials held an emergency meeting to assess the situation.

104 people were onboard Aeromexico Flight 576 from Cancun to Mexico City, and witnesses say around 100 people exited the plane. The hijackers, reportedly Bolivian, are in talks with Mexico’s president Felipe Calderon and are threatening to detonate an explosive device if their demands are not met.

We will update as information becomes available.

Update: Reports say seven men have been detained in connection with the hijacking, no word on whether they were the hijackers on board the plane.
