Microsoft released an instructional video (below) on how to set up your new Kinect system when you get it home in November, and just getting the bloody thing ready to use sounds like an almighty headache. If you want to get the most from your Kinect Experience, your home must meet a string of exacting conditions.

Is lighting in your room evenly spread? Is your floor free of stray clothing? Do you have a 6ft by 10ft space in front of your TV? Is your ridiculous lifestyle flat devoid of background noise? I can confidently say I answered “HELL NO” to all of those. Which apparently means I shan’t be getting my Kinect on.

Something tells me I won’t really care. And by “something”, I definitely mean this. And also this.

Thanks to the Wii’s clever motion-sensing controller, Nintendo leads the current generation of consoles by a stretch. Microsoft and Sony want to taste some of that success. They want to taste it badly.

Enter Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s PlayStation Move, two separate add-ons that control games using motion … but have they come to late?

A new study conducted by research bods at OTX has discovered that only 8 percent of Xbox 360 owners intend to use Natal, while only 6 percent of PS3’s market will be investing in Move.

That’s pretty poor, though in defense of the two add-ons, public knowledge of the two devices is still relatively low – only 15 percent of both PS3’s and Xbox 360’s market knew about the controllers. That should go up next week at the E3 expo, where both will be showed off, and as marketing for the devices kicks in.

I’m desperately curious to see how this shapes out, especially as the Wii’s novelty seems to be wearing thin with consumers after three and a half years on the market. Wii sales have been down throughout 2010, which sort of suggests the thirst for motion-controlled games has been quenched.

Meh, the internet expression signifying mediocrity or indifference is to become an officially recognized word.

Meh will be added to the Collins English Dictionary in its 30th edition to be published in 2009. Meh was submitted to the dictionary by Erin Whyte, from Nottingham, UK who defined it as “an expression of utter boredom or an indication of how little you care for an idea”. The dictionary will say that meh can be used as an interjection to suggest indifference or boredom – or as an adjective to say something is mediocre or a person is unimpressed.

The Times quotes Cormac McKeown, head of content at Collins Dictionaries, saying that

“This is a new interjection from the US that seems to have inveigled its way into common speech over here. It was actually spelt out in The Simpsons, when Homer is trying to prise the kids away from the TV with a suggestion for a day trip. They both just reply ‘meh’ and keep watching TV; he asks again and Lisa says, ‘We said MEH! – MEH, meh!’

“Internet and e-mail are playing a big part in formalising the spellings of vocal interjections like these. Other examples would be hmm and heh, which are both now ubiquitous online and in e-mails. People are increasingly writing in a register somewhere in between spoken and written English.”

Technically this is a recognition of Meh in UK English, not US English, but hopefully dictionaries across the pond will follow the lead. Or may be not. Meh.
