Meebo Updates Connect Social Networks with IM and Real Time Community Sharing

Meebo, the online chat app that lets you sign into all your IM programs with any browser, has spent the last few months upgrading their site and network, allowing other sites to add their app so that their users can chat with each other in real time. This has been on Facebook and Myspace for a while as well as other partner sites.

Before, if I logged into meebo on Facebook, I’d only be able to see friends online that were also part of that sites network. But on June 9th meebo rolled out new features that let me sign in on Facebook and also see who’s online from my networks on MySpace, or any of their partner sites I’m signed up to. They just announced that they’ve added about 75 other sites to their partner list including PlayedOnline, and SparkPeople. Additional signed partners include AddictingGames, AreYouInterested.com, BasilMarket, Bleacher Report, CafeMom, CrispyGamer, Current TV, DailyStrength.org, dotblu, eBaum’s World, FanPop, Flixster, GGL Global Gaming, ibeatyou, IGN.com, ImageChef, Internet Brands, JacketFlap, myYearbook, OperationSports, OutSpark, Paste Magazine, PerfSpot, Piczo, PlayFire, Sonico, StarPulse, Sugar Publishing and a slew of others.

This ‘chat layer’ added on top of a site or a handful of sites has been working out excellent for both users and site owners. The users can connect from anywhere and user retention and length of time on a site increases dramatically. In fact, sites running Meebo are seeing an average of over 20% of their US site visitors using the service on a monthly basis with each active user sending 50 IMs per day from the Meebo Bar.

Now here’s another interesting addition to Meebo – if you look at your Meebo bar, you’ll see a “Share Page” option that lets you share links, bits of content and other items with your friends across multiple networks, as well as Twitter and via email. This content sharing and communication across all your networks as well as email and IM is known as Community Sharing and it’s all browser based so you don’t need to have several chat clients open or be logged into all your networks.

With 50 million people sharing over 5 billion messages and 75 million links every month, Meebo is one of the Web’s fastest growing social media companies. Plus with these new features and a multitude of large social networking and partner sites signed up, growth of the userbase should be exponential.

For a company to create a multiple IM chat app in such a crowded space, it would seem they would fade away into the clutter, but Meebo has broken into territory now where their name may become ubiquitous to online real time chat. “Meebo me” or “Meebo me the link” could soon be the new verb in real time chat, like “Google me” is to search.

Meebo is on quite a roll this year. The messaging service announced a deal Friday in which it’ll bring Facebook and MySpace IM capabilities into its meebo.com interface. It’s the first company to offer such an option and may actually give some value to the social networks’ until now rather restrictive IM offerings.

Starting today, you can set up a Meebo account and communicate with both MySpace and Facebook friends from a single interface. Meebo also already supports AIM, Yahoo IM, MSN, Gtalk, and ICQ, among other platforms. It doesn’t require any program download to use its services, either.

The move follows a string of other successes in recent months. Meebo launched a partnership with Universal Music just weeks ago that’s brought videos by artists such as Kanye West and The Killers into its site. The deal also puts Meebo chat rooms on those artists’ own sites and social network profiles. A month earlier, Meebo signed on to handle all the chat rooms on Comedy Central’s election night Web site. The company introduced an Android IM app shortly before that.

Meebo currently claims 40+ million users and 5+ billion messages a month. It was founded just over three years ago and is based in Silicon Valley.

Meebo and Universal Music to Share Services

Meebo has struck a new deal with Universal Music Group to share content and services.

Meebo will begin offering ad-supported videos from UMG artists such as Kanye West, Ludacris, and The Killers on its site. The artists will use the platform to promote new and upcoming albums.

In the meantime, UMG will begin integrating Meebo’s chat rooms into the artist’s official Web sites. UMG has previously embedded Meebo Rooms for specific events like listening parties. This will mark the first time, though, the services will be intertwined in such a broad fashion.

This is just the latest in a string of UMG content-sharing partnerships. The label signed a deal with teen social networking site Kiwibox in October that brought thousands of its videos to the site in an ad-supported manner, with artists keeping part of the revenue.

As for Meebo, it has been around for just over three years. It claims 40 million users at its meebo.com chat site alone, not counting various partnerships and third-party implementations.

Meebo Launches Messaging Application for Android

Web-based messaging platform Meebo has launched Meebo for Android, an instant messaging application that brings Meebo functionality to T-Mobile’s G1.

Meebo for Android provides on the go instant messaging for anyone with a Meebo account, or an account on a range of supported IM services. The application will be available as a download through the phone via the Android Market

Meebo for Android includes access to all IM accounts through the one login and real-time notifications with IMs pushed to the status bar.

Meebo recently passed 40 million uses and handles over 5 billion messages per month.

Meebo Gets Set For Comedy Central Integration

Web-based messaging platform Meebo has scored a big deal for election night. The company has signed on with Comedy Central to provide embedded chat rooms on its indecision2008.com site for use by the network next Tuesday.

The rooms will host “live user commentary” during the election and the days that follow. Comedy Central will then utilize some of those comments within its on-air coverage. On-air promotion is expected to begin on November 4.

Meebo isn’t getting paid for the service, CNET reports — at least, not directly. Its advertising-based model will no doubt see a serious jump in impressions for the night. Certainly the company is also hoping some users will impressed enough with the chat rooms to find future external uses for the service.

It’s not the first time Meebo has turned to partner power to build its business, either. Just a couple of weeks ago, Meebo announced deals to use its messaging service on a host of third-party sites, such as Flixster, Bleacher Report, and Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids.

Meebo extends user reach to 70 million through new partnerships

Web based messaging platform provider Meebo has signed a range of new partnerships, extending their user reach to over 70 million users for their soon to be rolled out Community IM service.

Each partner site will use Meebo Community IM to offer open instant messaging, and to enable live communication and real-time notifications between site members. Meebo will work with its new partners to help monetize synchronous conversations, both 1-to-1 and group chat, on their sites.

According to Meebo, with these new additions, the yet to be released service now has a global reach of 72.9 million (August 2008) and an unduplicated reach in the United States of 26.2 million (August 2008), based on data from comScore.

The full partner list includes Bleacher Report, DanceJam, Dhingana, Fanpop, Flixster, GlobalGrind, IBeatYou, myYearbook, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group’s AddictingGames, OrangeShark, Piczo, PerfSpot, SparkArt, Sugar Publishing, Tagged, UGAME.net, Yaari, Zinch, and Zorpia.

The first site to launch Meebo Community IM wil be movie fan site Flixster. Flixster will integrate Meebo as the instant messaging service for its entire user base, with users able to exchange IMs with friends and community members seamlessly on site, and then continue those conversations at Meebo.com. Flixster will be able deliver real-time notifications and alerts to users via the web service API provided by Meebo.
