Despite being saved by judges two weeks ago, and missing the bottom three last week, tonight’s American Idol wasn’t a funny valentine for Matt Giraud, who received the least number of votes and his heading home.

In a complete shock, Adam Lambert joined the bottom three for the first time, alongside Kris Allen. Paul Adbul said the inclusion of Lambert in the bottom three “is crazy,” and Kara DioGuardi said “My mouth went open again…That’s what happens with Adam.”

Allison Iraheta, who was in the bottom three last week, and Danny Gokey survived the evening.

Next weeks Top 4 show theme is “rock-n-roll night.”

The surprise decision by the American Idol judges last week to save one contestant from going home meant that this week it was going to be the final song for two contestants.

Lil Rounds, who sang I’m Every Woman, and Anoop Desai, who sang Dim All the Lights received the least number of votes and bid their final farewell to Idol. Allison Iraheta was in the bottom three but goes forward for another week, and becomes the only female contestant left on the show. Matt Giraud, despite receiving the least number of votes last week, found favor with the fans this time around, not making the bottom three.

Adam Lambert continued his uninterrupted run of avoiding the bottom three, and goes into the top 5 round as favorite to win the series.

American Idol came with a twist this evening with the judges using a special rule to over-rule the popular vote.

Matt Giraud received the lowest number of votes for the round, but was saved for another day by a rule that says that the judges can save one singer who should have been going home. The override of the vote can only be used once a season, and had to be used by next weeks show at the latest.

Ryan Seacrest claimed that “Idol history has been made!” but Simon Cowell wasn’t quite as enthusiastic, saying to Giraud before giving him the good news that “good as you were last night” that he doesn’t “really have any chance of winning the competition.” The use of the rule means that two contestants will be evicted next week.

Adam Lambert sailed through for another week, continuing his run of never being placed in the bottom three. Asked about Cowell’s quip that his performance Tuesday night was akin to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Lambert responded “I think that’s a great movie. I mean, did he mean it as an insult?”
