The Bourne Legacy will be hitting theaters this summer but the movie won’t be starring Matt Damon as super spy Jason Bourne. The fourth installment of the series will rely instead on Jeremy Renner, who will be stepping into the shoes of Aaron Cross.

The new Bourne movie won’t exactly continue the story of Jason Bourne but it will take place in the same fictional world. According to the CS Monitor, the movie will follow the story line of a new Treadstone super spy, Aaron Cross, “whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.”

Damon won’t be returning for the new movie, but the film hasn’t lost any star power. Jeremy Renner will be joined by Bourne regulars Albert Finney, David Strathairn, and Joan Allen, and writer / director Tony Gilroy is adding Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz to the cast.

Matt Damon has reportedly backed out of the movie that was supposed to be his directorial debut.

News of Damon’s planned debut behind the camera first emerged in October 2011, when it was revealed an untitled John Krasinski and Dave Eggers movie would star – and be directed by – the Bourne trilogy star. Damon was all set to play a salesman whose life would be shook up following his arrival in a small town.

However, it now seems Damon’s involvement as director is in doubt, due to issues related to the script. The strange thing? Damon co-wrote the script with Krasinski (while the idea for the movie came jointly from Krasinski and Eggers). A source close to the project told Vulture that Damon would no longer direct the film, but that he would still star in it. Confused? Yeah, join the club.

Thankfully, it’s not looking like the $12 million production is dead in the water yet, with Damon expected to star alongside Krasinski and the excellent Frances McDormand. The group involved are already quite friendly it would seem – Damon co-starred alongside Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, in The Adjustment Bureau.

Anyway, with a blue ribbon name like Damon still on board, the film’s survival was always likely, but it might be a while longer before we see the star of Good Will Hunting do a Jolie and get cushy in the director’s chair. Look for more on this mysterious project in 2012, I guess …

Matt Damon has not been President Barack Obama’s biggest fan lately.  The actor campaigned for the President in 2008 and had such high expectations that he would lead a liberal revolution.

Now Damon has taken to the pages of Elle Magazine, where in an interview he gave this week he told them that he doesn’t see the President as having a pair of balls.

“You know, a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of the country, much better,” Damon said

He went on to criticize Obama for the Occupy Wall Street Protests, claiming that due to his lack of leadership people, literally, were forced to just sit in the street and scream for change.

Last year Damon also too the President to task for what he had said was Obama “misinterpreting” his mandate by giving in to Republicans on the Bush Tax Cuts.

The President did have some funny come backs to Damon’s comments last time, ripping the Hollywood heavyweight at the White House Correspondent’s Ball.

“I’ve even let down my key core constituency: movie stars. Just the other day, Matt Damon – I love Matt Damon, love the guy – Matt Damon said he was disappointed in my performance. Well, Matt, I just saw “The Adjustment Bureau,” so right back atcha, buddy.”

Katy Perry was at the helm for Saturday Night Live on, er, Saturday night, spoofing a range of fellow celebs and herself.

Pippa Middleton and Christina Aguilera were both targets of Perry’s gentle jibes, but the show opened with Perry ribbing herself … and in particular her unconventional wardrobe choices in her music videos.

The pop star revealed her outrageous outfits were borrowed from real people she grew up with. Cue Kristen Wiig arriving on stage as ‘Janet,’ Perry’s former neighbor, wearing a blue wig and frosting guns, as famously sported by Perry the ‘California Gurls’ video. Then Andy Samberg emerged as Kathy Beth Terry, Perry’s alter-ago in ‘Last Friday Night‘ who she used to babysit. You probably had to be there.

Better (I thought) was Perry spoofing herself on ‘Kalle,’ a mock Finnish talk show with a deliciously psychotic host armed with a clip for every anecdote, statement and syllable uttered by Perry. The humor was knowing and occasionally a little dark – not bad.

I was less crazy about Perry’s impersonation of  Christina Aguilera’s singing in mock movie ‘The Apocalypse,’ but her portrayal of Kate Middleton’s sister, Pippa, was pretty good, with an overly protective Pippa defending her sister Kate against a raunchy Queen and Prince Philip. Andy Samberg pulls off the Prince William look a little too well …

Other celebrities turned up for the show, including Alec Baldwin (who poked fun himself about his recent airline troubles – see HERE for the video), Matt Damon (yes, that’s him above) and Val Kilmer.

Good Will Hunting stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are teaming up on the big screen once again, this time to tell the Whitey Bulger story.

Affleck, taking on his recent success as a movie maker will direct Matt Damon who will play Bulger in the Warner Bros. release. Fans of the hit HBO series Soprano’s will also be happy to know that show writer/producer Terence Winter wrote the script.

Speaking with GQ Damon revealed the duo’s partnership for the new movie:

“I don’t think it’s been announced yet that we’re doing it,” Damon said “But the sooner it’s announced the better, just because everyone else will back off. I’m really excited about it.”

Bulger was a mob boss in Boston, Massachusetts who was believed to be responsible for at least 19 deaths while forming a “protection racket.” Starting in 1975 Bulger turned FBI informant which allowed him to continue his illegal activities while helping take down his competition.

At this time it’s still not clear if the movie will be a straight biopic since Damon says they are still working out details about what part of Bulger’s story to tell with the limited on-screen time they are given.

In the meantime Matt Damon is about to make his directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with John Krasinski. That Krasinski assisted movie is ”about a salesman who goes to this small town and how the salesman is changed by his experience there,” Damon says.

Between this new project, his directorial debut and his upcoming Liberace film with co-star Michael Douglas it looks like Damon is turning into Hollywood’s hardest worker.

Matt Damon’s been talking about trying his hand at directing for the past several months, and now it looks like he’s going to get his shot at it – but not with the project that everyone thought he would make his debut in.

Variety learned that Damon penned a script for an untitled legal alongside The Office star John Krasinski, and the report states that Damon is set to produce, direct and star in the film.

The film, which sees Damon playing the role of a salesman whose life comes into question when he arrives at a small town, is reportedly the brainchild of Krasinski and author Dave Eggers, one of the writers behind Away We Go, which Krasinski starred in.

The movie is said to setting up at Warner Bros., but Variety notes that as of now Warner Bros. has yet to greenlight the project. The team is currently working on finishing up a script “within a month”, and preliminary plans are to shoot somewhere on the East Coast.

Damon, whose next on-screen appearance will be We Bought a Zoo, was originally expected to make his directorial debut with Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses which, as it happens, also stars Krasinski, but Variety was told that he’ll instead make his debut with the new, yet-to-be-named project.

Well, this should be very interesting.

It appears Matt Damon has signed on for a new HBO film that centers on the life of late singer Liberace. HBO house fare is often incredibly well done, so in and of itself, the film is likely to be fantastic solely for that reason. But as HBO tends to, a compelling cast seems to be in the works for the project as well.

Damon has long been rumored to play the lover of the late Las Vegas staple entertainer, with actor Michael Douglas on board as Liberace himself. The product has been in development hell for many years, with citations on the web dating back several years chronicling the genesis of the HBO Liberace biopic.

But the film is now confirmed. It has a title- Beyond the Candelabra, which may or may not be tongue-in-cheek and to be fair, HBO could carry it off either way- as well as a director, Steven Soderbergh. This marks the first time Soderbergh has worked with both Damon and Douglas in the same film, but the director has done Traffic with Douglas, and Contagion, The Informant, and the Ocean’s series of films with Damon.

Producer Jerry Weintraub commented on the lining up of cast and HBO for Behind the Candelabra:

“I’ve wanted to make a film about Liberace for a very long time, and after the amazing experience I had with HBO on His Way, I knew that they were absolutely the right place for this movie,” he said. “I am thrilled that we have the incomparable Michael Douglas to inhabit the role of Liberace, as well as the exceptional Matt Damon to play the pivotal part of Scott Thorson. Putting these two fine actors in the creative hands of Steven Soderberg — it doesn’t get better than that.”

Filming will kick off next summer in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Palm Springs.

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon’s Liberace movie has finally found a home. The Liberace biopic, called “Behind the Candelabra,” will be directed by Steven Soderbergh and will air on HBO.

Soderbergh has been talking about making a Liberace movie since 2009. The film will focus on the flamboyant pianist’s career and his relationship with his young lover, Scott Thorson.

The Washington Post reports that the Liberace movie will be executive produced by Jerry Weintraub and that production on the Liberace movie will start in the Summer of 2012.

Weintraub told the LA Times:

“I wanted people to see the other side of Liberace. I knew Liberace when I was kid. He entertained me a lot, we had a lot of good times together. He was a fun guy and a brilliant artist. He was Elton John and Lady Gaga before they even dreamed of it. But he had two sides to his life — the dark side, which he couldn’t talk about in those days because coming out of the closet could kill a career, and then he was this bigger-than-life artist onstage. He was living in two polar-opposite worlds. And I wanted to show that dynamic.”

Soderbergh said that it was important for him to find a venue that would give his Liberace biopic a wide audience, but also allow him to have creative control. HBO met both of those standards.

Soderbergh said:

“From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it. HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us.  Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.”

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon will be playing lovers in the new movie. Douglas will take on the role of the flamboyant Liberace and Damon will play his young lover, Scott Thorson.

The last time Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow appeared on screen together, it was in 1999 for The Talented Mr. Ripley. The two actors were both in their 20s while they filmed the Anthony Minghella picture. Now, more than a decade later, Damon and Paltrow have reunited on the big screen for Contagion. 

Damon said that working with Paltrow this time around was a lot different than when they filmed The Talented Mr. Ripley. In the new movie, Damon and Paltrow are married in the new film. Paltrow’s character becomes sick from a mysterious virus and Damon tries to save his family.

Damon said:

“(Ripley) feels like a lifetime ago… I was reminded of just how amazing she is, she’s a really special actress. More so than anybody I’ve ever worked with, she’s got an ability to turn it on and off. Like she can just be talking about anything and then when they say, ‘Rolling,’ it’s like she snaps, she just locks in.”

Damon, who has been married to Luciana Barroso for nearly 6 years, has three kids now. The LA Times reports that Paltrow also has a few kids of her own, Apple and Moses, with Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

Paltrow said:

“Obviously a lot has changed. I have kids, I’ve grown up a lot… It was really nice to get back together with Matt and talk about old times. It was fun.”

Matt Damon shaved his head for his new movie, Elysium, and he loves the new look. But Damon knows that he isn’t the best looking bald guy walking around. That award goes to Jake Gyllenhaal.

Damon told PEOPLE:

“He sure does have a beautiful round head. I try not to envy, but I have to say Jake’s got a damn good-looking head. Gyllenhaal definitely gets the blue ribbon for the best bald head over me.”

Damon said that he loves the bald look because it makes things more simple, although there are a few drawbacks.

Damon said:

“I get out of the shower and just run the towel over my head and I’m done. But the only problem for me was during the summer time. I had to remember to put on sunscreen. I’m not used to that.

Damon just attended the premier of his latest movie, Contagion, but the Bourne Identity star is already looking forward to his next project.

Damon will be playing  Scott Thorson, Liberace’s partner, in his next movie, Liberace. The title role will be played by Michael Douglas.

Damon said:

“We were talking about getting together and reading some of the scenes, the parts are fantastic… It’s really, really wonderful and we want to get it right.”

During his appearance at the premiere of his newest movie Contagion actor Matt Damon revealed that he’s already looking ahead to his next project Liberace in which he co-stars next to actor Michael Douglas.

Damon plays Scott Thorson, partner to Liberace and according to reports Douglas and Damon will be locking lips at some point in the movie.

Speaking about the biopic Matt Damon revealed:

“[It's] gonna be great.”

While he went on to reveal to Yahoo News that he hasn’t rehearsed the movies more intimate scenes with Douglas:

“We just get together on weekends and make out? No,” while adding, ”We were talking about getting together and reading some of the scenes, the parts are fantastic… It’s really, really wonderful and we want to get it right.”

Fans of the famous singer/pianist will have to wait until 2013 for the movie to debut.

In the meantime Contagion opens this Friday at theaters around the country.

Seeing a big name in a Hollywood suspense movie kind of kills the suspense. Everyone knows that the main character is going to survive because most audiences like happy endings. But Steven Soderbergh plays with that sentiment in his new movie, “Contagion,” by killing off A-list actors early and often.

And how could he not? Soderbergh’s “Contagion” is about a global pandemic that kills millions of people across the world. Which means that no one in his all-star cast, including Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet, is safe.

At the Venice Film Festival, where “Contagion” just premiered, Soderbergh said:

“It’s very helpful to have movie stars playing as many of these roles as you can, because you’re throwing so many characters and so much information at the audience it’s very helpful for them to get a sort of reference point.

“There’s a reason that movie stars have existed since the beginning of cinema. It’s good for audiences. They like to have people they can identify with.”

The movie hops from Hong Kong, to London, to the United States, showing individual people react to the biggest crisis the world has ever faced.

Reuters reports that Damon and Paltrow play an ordinary couple dealing with the crisis, while Marion Cotillard and Laurence Fishburne play health officials trying to stop the pandemic. Jude Law plays a blogger who doesn’t believe the story being told by the government.

According to Soderbergh, “Contagion” was partly based on the 2003 outbreak of SARS and is a very realistic movie.

Soderbergh said:

 ”All of the science in the film had to be accurate, all of the scenes in which the virus was discussed or shown visually had to be absolutely realistic or plausible.

“Otherwise we felt we weren’t advancing our ideas very well or contributing to this genre very well.”

Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner has been given the opportunity of a lifetime, the chance to take over the Bourne spy series made popular by actor Matt Damon.

Unlike the James Bond films which saw various actors play the same character, Renner would play another spy who has gone through the same type of Treadstone program training that eventually broke Jason Bourne.

Director Tony Gilroy chose Renner over other top choices that included Taylor Kitsch and Luke Evans among others, along with established action stars Shia LaBeouf and James McAvoy.

While plot details are being kept secret, one fact remains, with Bourne not being “replaced” so to speak he could return for future films, should Matt Damon ever decide he wants to revive his spy role for another go around.

Are you willing to buy Jeremy Renner in a Bourne type role? If he shows the same confidence he had in Hurt Locker I’m willing to give him a chance.

The rather detailed rumor (as far as fake celebrity death rumors go) claims that Damon was found dead in California’s Palo Verde mountain area on Wednesday, and claims that “according to TMZ’s web site, Damon, who was officially reported missing Friday, was on a camping trip. His body was found by an Imperial County Sheriff’s Department deputy on Wednesday.”

It gets better, reading “According to TMZ.com on Wednesday, law enforcement headed into the desert near San Diego on Tuesday. That day, TMZ.com reported, “Damon sent a text message to a friend that he was out of water and needed help. There was a massive search that ended abruptly.” That’s then followed by a back story about Damon writing publicly about wanting to go into the desert as well.

It obviously not true on a couple of fronts: an actor like Matt Damon having gone missing last week would have been huge news, second: Damon gave an interview Monday from Venice where he’s in town for a film festival. Still, credit where due: someone has put a lot of effort into this hoax.

Damon, along with director Paul Greengrass are currently developing the script, although notably the movie will not be based on a Robert Ludlum novel. Universal owns the complete rights to the Bourne character for use on screen.

“We’re working on it. This time it would be from an original script rather than a book by Robert Ludlum, but the director Paul Greengrass is busy and I am too, so we’ll see what happens” said Damon.

Damon though noted that they don’t get any easier with age: “when I did the first movie, I was 29 years old. I am 37 now, and after a tough fighting scene, the next day you wake up and feel your body more. That’s just the way it is.”

The three previous Jason Bourne movies grossed nearly $1 billion, with the third in the series taking $400 million.
