The identify of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s mistress has been reveled as being María Belén Chapur.

María Belén Chapur is described as being a beautiful brunette who plays tennis, goes jogging, and has large eyes. Chapur worked as a journalist and translator of English for about a year for the Argentine television station Canal America, then headed to New York after the 9-11 attacks in 2001 to report for the station.

Sanford has yet to respond to call for him to resign after the disclosure of his relationship. The affair isn’t the issue, but that he scheduled “official business” to meet his mistress.

Emails between disgraced South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and his Argentinean mistress obtained by The State Newspaper have been published online today, despite the newspaper having obtained the emails in December 2008.

The emails, dated July 2008 clearly show Sanford was in love with his mistress, with the two making arrangements to meet and sharing sweet words. You can read the emails on The State website here.

Putting the Sanford scandal aside for one minute, there’s another serious issue here, and that’s the relationship between Sanford and The State newspaper. Why did a McClatchy owned newspaper sit on a big story like this for 6 months when they had hard evidence that the Governor was undertaking an affair, but better still (and here’s the public interest angle) was arranging to meet his mistress while on, or as an extension of public trips. The emails even include Sanford discussing a trip to see John McCain during the Presidential campaign. It beggars belief that the newspaper didn’t publish the story until now.

Likely yet another example of how the so-called free and fair mainstream media are nothing of the sort.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has publicly admitted to having an affair with a woman from Argentina, after he disappeared for 5 days and family and the media speculated about his whereabouts.

Governor Sanford said the following about his affair with the Argentinian woman in a statement earlier today:

“I have been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship with what started as a dear dear friend. First and foremost, I apologize to my wife and my four boys. I have made decisions that have hurt and will continue to hurt them, and for that I’m sincerely sorry. Jenny has stood by me through campaign after campaign, through hard time after hard time, and neither she nor the boys deserve this. Please offer them your prayers.”

Governor Mark Sanford also announced his resignation as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, but did not say whether he was considering resigning as governor of South Carolina.

The question of how do you lose a Governor is about to be answered as Mark Sanford, the Governor of South Carolina has disappeared.

Sanford’s wife, State police and even his staff claim they don’t know where Sanford is, and he has switched off all mobile phones so he can’t be contacted or traced. He hasn’t been seen in four days.

Concern that something serious having happened though was allayed when his lawyers told the press that Sanford “was taking time to recharge after his failed fight against federal stimulus money.” Where ever Sanford is though, the media attention surrounding his disappearance must have reached him, as he has since called in to say that he’s ok, and that he’s “hiking on the Appalachian Trail”….. because that’s apparently what Governors do without telling anyone before leaving.

Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford is nowhere to be found, and both his wife and the lieutenant governor admit to being clueless as to his whereabouts.

Gov. Sanford left in a black Suburban sometime Thursday and has not been heard from since. His wife, Jenny, indicated that she is not worried and that he “needed time away from his kids to write something.” Uh, what?

Sanford’s personal and state phones have been switched off since last Thursday, and he hasn’t responded to repeated calls and texts. Authorities last placed the governor near Atlanta via mobile phone towers.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has also not heard from the governor, but indicates he has not yet been put in charge of the state. Okay, so who’s running it exactly? Either something bad has happened to this guy or he’s incredibly irresponsible. What if there was an emergency vote on grits or whatever it is that they legislate down there?

In a statement, the governor’s office explained:

“Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements.”

Oh, yes- homeboy also left his security team behind. Maybe they need to get him a bigger desk?
