Livestation coming to the iPhone

I’m a big fan of P2P live television service Livestation, and unlike many other sites we’ve covered them heavily. The service offers live television from a range of major providers, including BBC, Al Jazerra, France 24 and others. More recently, they added support for internet streams as a well, so it now offers CNN and others all from the same handy interface. I watched all the US Presidential debates from Livestation, and its my first port of call for anything I need live TV news coverage on.

We also have a nice Livestation story: Livestation picked up streaming of the Large Haldron Collider after I mentioned in a post that it would be great if they could, so they also listen, and continue to deliver.

The next stage in the development of Livestation is an iPhone client, which given they’ve only had a Mac client for less than a year is remarkable progress. The iPhone client will be officially demonstrated on Livestation live December 4 at 5pm GMT, or 9am PST. Unfortunately that’s 4am my time so I won’t be tuning in, but if you want to see the future of mobile TV, it’s a recommending viewing experience.

Livestation teams with Al Jazeera for unique Debate coverage

Live television streaming service Livestation has teamed with the some times controversial Al Jazeera for a unique take on tonight’s first US Presidential debate.

During the debate, Livestation users tuned to Al Jazeera (who will be showing the debate live) will be able to discuss the debate as it unfolds live not only with other viewers and Livestation staff, but with Al Jazeera producers as well. The idea of live forums during a show isn’t new, but Livestation claims mixing real time chat, between program producers and viewers on the same screen as the live show is different again.

If you’d rather not get your debate fix from Al Jazeera, Livestation partners including BBC World will be streaming the debate live as well, so there is a choice of streams.

News Junkies Rejoice: Livestation comes to the Mac

Online television streaming service Livestation has launched a Mac client, bringing free streaming news television to Apple fans.

P2P powered Livestation launched last year as a streaming television platform that offered legal feeds from news services such as the BBC, later adding additional channels including Russia Today, Al Jazeera English, Euronews and France 24. As we covered in July, Livestation took their platform a step further by turning the service into an open streaming platform, allowing users to add their own streams to the player, and for those streams to be shared across the network, for example CNN, NASA TV and Bloomberg are now quickly available from the platform, along with hundreds of other live stream stations.

Upfront there’s nothing remarkable about the Mac client; like the Windows client each channel includes a chat room, and you can search for feeds among user contributions, but where Livestation excels is in a full screen view, where compared to internet streams it offers a rich, nearly perfect television like quality on its officially supported channels.

Livestation adds channel personalisation

Silverlight powered internet TV service Livestation has expanded its platform offering by giving users the ability to add their own choice in channels.

Livestation users (with the latest version) can now add any TV, radio or webcam stream to their Livestation account for access and viewing inside the Livestation player. Livestation users will also be able to browse through all of the channels other viewers have stored via a dedicated section on the Livestation website.

Livestation channels currently include Al Jazeera, BBC World News, Bloomberg Television, EuroNews (English, French, Italian and Spanish), France 24, i>Tele, Russia Today and BBC World Service, and is free to watch and not georetarded. The service is currently only available for Windows users but a Mac client is being tested for release.

If you’re a news junkie, and like free TV, Livestation is definitely a service you’ll like. I’ve found myself previously leaving it running on my (then Windows) desktop all day, allowing the news to stream in as I work. I just wish they’d hurry up with the Mac version, after all, Silverlight is available on Apple machines.
