The ladies of the lingerie football league are wearing less clothes than normal for a new PETA ad. The “Tackle Cruelty: Bench Fur” ad campaign features a video interview with members of the Chicago Bliss LFL team as well as a nude photo-shoot.

PETA writes:

“The ladies of the Lingerie Football League (LFL) are some seriously tough cookies… These bombshell athletes teamed up with PETA to use their fame and fit figures to show the world that fur should be permanently cut from the roster. They jumped at the chance to draw attention to the millions of animals who are abused and killed for their skins each year.”

The Huffington Post reports that the girls from the Chicago Bliss team also traveled with PETA to a demonstration in Toronto. The girls, in their lingerie football uniforms, carried signs that read “Tackle Cruelty: Bench Fur” and encouraged people to ditch fur this holiday season.

PETA Campaigner Emily Lavender said in a press statement:

“Wearing fur is a personal foul. With so many stylish, warm, and durable fabrics available today, there’s no excuse for wearing anyone’s skin.”

PETA writes:

“On fur farms around the world, chinchillas, foxes, minks, raccoons—and even dogs and cats—suffer from the time they are born until their final breath. Many people are shocked to learn that fur farms use the cheapest and crudest slaughter methods available, including bludgeoning, gassing, and anal electrocution.”

PETA is hoping to bring people to its site with the promise of naked ladies, then shocking them with facts and images of animal abuse.

So I got a pretty strong reaction to my last Lingerie football post both on twitter and on Facebook, mostly because I actually know some of these players from being around the world of women’s football for the past few years. Let me be clear, the women actually playing this game are athletes, doing things that most of us could only dream of doing.

I understand that, but to me this is a gimmick league, and the gimmick is sex. That is fine too, sex sells no question. However, we have seen several football leagues come in with a gimmick (the WFL and the XFL specifically) and ultimately the gimmick is what helped kill those leagues off. Granted scantly clad women sort of playing football is a great hook, and why this league is among the fastest growing sports league in America right now.

So with that being said, let us take you through the rules or more specifically how the games are played. This is a 7 on 7 contest. On offense there is 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 1 down linewoman, and 3 wide outs. On defense we have 2 down D linewomen, 1 linebacker, 2 corners, and 2 safeties. There is no punting and there are no field goals. Additionally every four downs must feature two running plays and two passing plays.

The women play two 17 minute halves, and there is a 15 minute half time. If there is a tie, one eight minute sudden death period is played. The play clock is 35 seconds long. Obviously the strategy is to keep the action moving and not let people like me think about each pay too much. Teams have 20 members with 14 being active and six being non active each week.

I have got to be honest with all of you. Writing about the Lingerie Football League puts me in a very weird position. Not in the way everyone might think. I am proud to be the Director of Media Relations for the Detroit Dark Angels, a professional Women’s football team who plays in full pads and helmets under NFL rules. I have been involved with the sport of Women’s football for close to six years now, and my personal prejudice is that the LFL league is not exactly real football. Nor is it the final professional destination I want for my players. However, it is becoming a big deal and  as a sports writer I feel it now deserves a some coverage.

First a little background. This sport, and I will call it a sport despite my personal feelings, grew out of an annual Super Bowl halftime Pay Per View event. This is a league with 12 teams either up and running or due to be added soon. The league website is a little blank on the details, but the games will begin in early September and MTV2 will be airing 20 games this season. I am not sure if they go out live, or if they will be the edited down versions I watched in 2010.

Now there are some very big names associated with this league that NFL fans will instantly recognize. Gilbert Brown will be the head coach of the Green Bay Chill, Bob Golic has been announced as the owner of the Cleveland Crush, and he has hired former Cleveland Browns DB Hanford Dixon as that team’s head coach. Dixon had been on the broadcast team for Cleveland’s arena football team.

So this is a 7-7 football game played on the 50 yard field many are familiar with from watching Arena Football games. Far be it from me to judge anyone for watching this, as I enjoy muscular women dong stuff like this as much as the next guy, but if sex is the main selling point of this league this may be my one and only LFL post. For now I will save judgment, and keep an open mind in my coverage of this growing sport.

The Lingerie Football League

The Lingerie Football League began as part of the Super Bowl half-time show, in which women would compete in an event dubbed the Lingerie Bowl. The game’s popularity led to the creation of the full league, which previously had only four teams but expanded to 10 for 2009.

The teams include: Atlanta Steam, Chicago Bliss, Miami Caliente, New England Euphoria, Tampa Breeze, Dallas Desire, Denver Dream, Los Angeles Temptation, San Diego Seduction, and Seattle Mist.

The Lingerie Football League will play one game per week during its 2009 season. The league will use major stadiums across the U.S.
