As we reported earlier today, Ron Paul spawn Rand Paul, a Kentucky senator, was “detained” by TSA agents after refusing a pat-down in Tennessee.

Paul’s dad Ron tweeted that his son had been detained this morning- the younger Paul was on his way to what he says would have been the biggest speech in his career at an anti-abortion rally- when something in the area of his leg triggered a scanner. Rather than allowing Paul to be rescanned, the TSA demanded he submit to the pat-downs, a security measure many feel is both unnecessarily invasive as well as ineffective and upsetting.

Paul refused, and has recounted his version of events at the airport following the incident. He says of what may have provoked the event:

“I suspect that the scanner is randomly setting off an alarm that’s not a real alarm so you’re made to feel like you did something wrong and then you get the pat-down. Does the screener have the ability to push a button and randomly get someone to set off the screener?”

Of headlines that blared “Rand Paul detained,” he says:

“Probably a matter of semantics. I was told not to leave a cubicle and when I did step outside the cubicle I was sort of surrounded and put back in the cubicle. Seems a little bit like I was being detained. But when they got tired of detaining me, they evicted me. And then I was told to leave. I think I would have been arrested had I not done what I was told.”

Following their comments this morning on the incident, the TSA has not confirmed nor have they denied any of Paul’s assertions. Do you think more Americans should refuse pat-downs like Rand Paul?

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), son of presidential contender Ron Paul- both who are known for libertarian philosophies- was detained this morning in Tennessee after refusing a pat-down by the Transportation Security Administration, better known as the TSA.

Perhaps Paul was smuggling some illegal cupcakes? News of his detainment by the controversial agency broke via his dad on several social media outlets, and on Facebook, Paul told his many fans and followers:

My son Rand is currently being detained by the TSA at the Nashville Airport. I’ll share more details as the situation unfolds.

The situation, described as a “standoff” by many media outlets, was confirmed by Rand Paul staffer Moira Bagley, who tweeted:

Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He’s currently being detained by TSA in Nashville

Rand Paul himself has not yet addressed the incident on his own Twitter account, and his dad has not yet updated with any information as to how or if the situation has been resolved. The TSA, however, has released a statement about this morning’s events at the Tennessee airport, saying to the public:

“When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport. Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling.”

Rand Paul has long taken issue with the invasiveness of TSA pat downs, and in a hearing last June, he said to TSA administrator John Pistole:

“I think you ought to get rid of the random pat-downs. The American public is unhappy with them, they’re unhappy with the invasiveness of them.”

The fine folks who run the city of Louisville, Kentucky are spending a good chunk of change on exploring the possibility of adding a NBA franchise to that town. This part of the country is a Mecca for college basketball, but has little to offer folks in the way of pro sports. Sure Louisville is the home of the Kentucky Derby, and NASCAR will stage an annual Sprint Cup race in that region starting in 2011, but for the most part the people there do not have much to choose from in the way of pro sports.

That certainly makes Louisville an attractive option for the NBA. The NBA has done well in Oklahoma City, yet another small market virtually devoid of pro sports. In this day and age sports leagues have to be very creative on where the locate their teams. The UFL has proven that some small markets have potential and the NBA may be well served to start relocating some teams into untapped pro sports markets.

The folks in Louisville claim to have a billionaire owner ready to go and have spent somewhere around 65k exploring this idea. They also appear ready to spend another 22k to move this idea forward. Since the New Orleans Hornets are for sale, and are technically down the road a ways, a rumor like this could certainly gain some traction.

The main problem with that is Louisville is a weak TV market. It is just the 50th largest TV market in the country which is actually larger than New Orleans at 53, but smaller than Oklahoma City at 45. Right now TV rules all, but a NBA team in Louisville with no competition may actually be a very good idea.

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested in Covington, Kentucky early this morning on charges of driving under the influence.

23-year-old Maualuga was arrested at sometime between 1:30 and 3AM Friday, after running into a parking meter and two parked cars. Police have not disclosed Maualuga’s BAC at the time of the accident, but in addition to the driving under the influence charges, the football player was also cited for reckless driving. Maualuga is set to be arraigned today in Kenton County District Court on the charges from his arrest last night.

Maualuga played college football for the USC Trojans and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated‘s 2009 NFL Draft Preview issue as a potential first round pick. He was selected in the second round by the Cincinnati Bengals. In the last week of 2009, Maualuga suffered a broken ankle. On December 30th, he was placed on injured reserve and finished his rookie season with 63 tackles, one sack, three forced fumbles and three pass deflections in 15 games started.

Amanda Ross, 29, was found dead just after 6:30 this morning in Lexington, KY outside her home at the Opera House Square Town Homes.

Former boyfriend Steve Nunn has been arrested in connection with the crime. He has not been charged with her murder, but has been charged with violating a protective order. Also suffering from gunshot wounds, Nunn was found around 10am in the cemetery in which is parents are buried. (Nunn’s father was former Kentucky governor Louie B. Nunn.) Police declined to comment on Nunn’s injuries but say he is in “fair condition.”

After being  put on administrative leave in February after allegations of abuse involving Ross surfaced, Nunn resigned from his post in March as deputy director for the Health and Family Services Cabinet. He ran unsuccessfully for state governor in 2003. He went on to lose his seat in the house in 2006, after serving 15 years.
