Supermarket Accused Of Religious Discrimination By Jedi Religion Founder

Bangor, Wales (AHN) – The founder of the Jedi religion, Daniel Jones, was forced to leave a branch of the supermarket Tesco after refusing to remove his distinctive brown hood.

Jones, a founder of the religion inspired by the Star Wars films, told England’s The Guardian he felt humiliated and victimized for his beliefs after the incident in Bangor, North Wales.

Tesco employees told 23-year-old Jones that his Jedi hood violated store rules. But Jones claims the religion, with over 500,000 followers, prescribes that he should don the hood while in public, The Guardian reported.

The grocery store giant struck back, pointing out that the three best-known Jedi knights in the Star Wars films-Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker-all appeared in public without their trademark brown hoods.

Jones of Holyhead, who also goes by his Jedi name Morda Hehol, was in the store to buy something to eat during his lunch break when Tesco staff approached him, asking him to remove the hood, England’s the Daily Mail reported.

A Tesco spokesperson told the Mail that Jedis weren’t banned from their stores-just that they’d have to remove their hoods to do their grocery shopping.

Daniel Jones aka Master Morda Hehol, who created the International Church of Jediism (UK Church of the Jedi) with his brother Barney Jones (Master Jonba Hehol), claims he was victimised over his beliefs by staff at the local Tesco in Bangor, North Wales.

The church requires believers to cover their heads in public places. But the supermarket staff ejected him from the store over security fears, beause he refused to remove his hood.

Morda Hehol told the Sun:

I told them it was a requirement of my religion but they just sniggered and ordered me to leave. I walked past a Muslim lady in a veil. Surely the same rules should apply to everyone. It was discrimination. I was really upset. Nobody should be treated like that. I’ll advise worshippers to boycott Tesco if it happens again. They will feel the Force.

The jedi holocron handbook clearly states that “Jedis must wear a hood up in any public place of a large audience.”

A Tesco spokeswoman said:

Jedi are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all went hoodless without going to the Dark Side. If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they’ll miss lots of special offers.

The UK Church of Jedi was established in 2008. Jediism is practised 500,000 people around the world.

Well now you can thanks to Uncle Milton Industries’ new toy called The Force Trainer that is hitting the market this month. The game uses a wireless headset which reads your brainwave activity and then converts it in actual physical action. Apparently if you focus well enough you can make the ping-pong looking ball, or as the company calls it – the training sphere, rise in the tower.

"When you concentrate, it activates the training remote," says Frank Adler of toymaker Uncle Milton Industries, which is creating the Trainer. "There is a flow of air that will move the (ball). You can actually feel like you are in a zone."

Star Wars sound effects and audio clips emitted from the base unit "cue you in to progress to the next level (from Padawan to Jedi) or when to move the sphere up or down to keep challenging yourself," Adler says.
