For those of you who have been waiting with bated breath in anticipation for James Cameron’s  recreation of Titanic, you’ll finally be getting what you want, as the 3D film bursts into screenings on Valentine’s Day.
Paramount and 20th Century Fox have decided to let fans see the film weeks in advance. The advanced screenings held in cities around the world, sold out within hours, causing multiple computer servers to crash when first offered on Tuesday. The screenings will be presented in realD 3D.

Cameron’s Titanic shattered box office records with its 1997 release when it made 1.9 billion worldwide and for more than a decade it was the highest grossing film of all-time until he broke his own record with Avatar.

Cameron has spent years perfecting the 3D version of Titanic, creating an innovative technology in StereoD to present it in. Joining him in the project was more than 300 production artists . The director has even gone on to defend this re-release at lengths stating, “I think it’s perfectly valid . . . It just felt right in the centenary of the sinking of Titanic to bring this back out for fans who either are fans of the movie but have never had the widescreen experience or are fans of the movie who remember it from back then and want to re-experience that.”

The Titanic 3D film will be launched into theaters worldwide on April 6th.

James Cameron will be releasing a 3D version of his film “Titanic” to honor the 100th anniversary of the legendary ship’s sinking. But if you really want to get an up close look at the world’s most famous shipwreck, you should check out the 5500 Titanic artifacts that will be auctioned off next year.

The Wall Street Journal reports that fine china, ship fittings, currency, and personal possessions will be auctioned off in April. The auction still needs to be approved by a federal judge in Virginia who has overseen the legal issues regulating the salvage of the Titanic for years. Premier Exhibitions Inc., the parent company of RMS Titanic Inc., plans to set an official date in January.

The Associated Press reports that the trove of Titanic artifacts was valued of $189 million after a 2007 appraisal.

Judge Smith, a maritime jurist, called the Titanic an “international treasure” when he ruled in 2010 that the artifacts should be sold as a collection and not piece by piece. Smith also ruled that the artifact should be available ”to present and future generations for public display and exhibition, historical review, scientific and scholarly research, and educational purposes.”

Guernsey’s, the New York City auction house that will be putting the Titanic collection up for sale, wrote in the SEC filing:

“The Property will be sold as a complete collection and offered for sale as one lot.”

Which means that when the Titanic artifacts do go up for auction, they’ll likely be purchased by a museum.

More than 1500 people died when the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage after striking an iceberg on April 15th, 1912. Would you go see a Titanic exhibit if the artifacts do make it to a museum?

With James Cameron’s Avatar banking more than $2.78 billion worldwide we knew it was only a matter of time before writers began claiming he stole the idea and now a second lawsuit has been filed against the director and his production partners.

The newest lawsuit comes to us courtesy of Bryant Moore, a science fiction writer who says his screenplays for Aquatica and Descendants: The Pollination were used to create the world of Avatar and it’s major themes.

In the lawsuit, filed quite some time after the movie was released in theaters and on Blu-ray and DVD, the writer says similarities exist between the bioluminescent flora/plant life on the planet of Avatar along with a likeness to the following aspects of his screenplay:

Unbreathable atmospheres, matriarch support of hero vs. heroine, spiritual connections to environment and reincarnation, appearance of mist in scene, sunlight to moonlight, crackling from gargantuan foliage, blue skin/green skin and battle scene on limbs/branches.

Not only is he going after James Cameron he’s also filed suit against 20th Century Fox. Moore is asking for more than $1.5 billion in actual damages and $1 billion in punitive damages.

It should be noted that every single one of his claims have long been used as generally accepted possibilities in science fiction books, movies and even comics. To claim that he created the “matriarch support of hero vs. heroine” for example is ridiculous and we’ve seen plenty of movies and read plenty of books with “unbreathable atmospheres” (hardly a new concept outside of fiction storytelling).

When all is said and done this case will end up where the one before it did, nowhere.

Titanic is coming back to the big screen and its coming back in 3D. James Cameron’s massive Blockbuster will get a complete 3D makeover before it hits theaters in April, 2012.

Cameron said:

“This is a film that many people have seen, obviously, sometimes multiple times, but there is a whole generation of people who haven’t seen it in theaters.”

Cameron and producer Jon Landau showed 18 minutes of 3D film at the huge screening room at Paramount Studios.

Cameron said:

“I love the 3D, I think it’s spectacular. If I had had 3D cameras at the time, if there had been 3D theatres at the time, I would certainly have shot the film in 3D.”

According to Sky News, Titanic is the second highest grossing film of all-time (Avatar, another Cameron film, is number one). The movie, which stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet, won 11 Oscars in 1997, including Best Picture and a Best Director for Cameron.

Cameron hasn’t announced any plans yet, but the director did say that there are several classic films that could benefit from a 3D makeover. Could the Terminator get the 3D treatment?

“I do believe that there is an array of 10 or 20 movies – think of the best movies of all times – that should be converted in 3D, but it has to be done right. I firmly believe that 3D is an enhancement even for just normal, narrative scenes, not necessarily the action scenes. That feeling that you’re right there, actually with characters, enhances the emotional interaction between the audience and the film.”

In the digital age, people are going to steal. It’s going to happen and there’s no stopping it. According to James Cameron, the director of the most pirated movie of all time, the movie industry needs to enrich the movie going experience so people will want to go to the theater instead of pirating a movie.

Cameron said during the CTIA wireless tradeshow:

“In film we have definitely felt threatened by piracy. We saw the music industry crash and burn in its efforts to stop it. But with 4G and Moore’s Law, you can’t fight it…. People are discriminating about the experience. They want to own it, have it on a iPhone when they want it, and they want the social experience of going to the cinema. These are really different experiences. And I think they can all co-exist in the same eco-system.”

Judging by the numbers, it’s hard to tell if Cameron’s theory is right or wrong. His movie, Avatar, is the most pirated movie of all time. It also had the biggest box office take in movie history. So did people pirate the movie first and then decide that they had to see it on the big screen? Or did they go to theaters, and then decide that they wanted to watch it again at home?

Either way, it doesn’t look like illegal downloads are hurting the movie business. Every movie on this list (with the exception of Kick-Ass) grossed more than $200 million worldwide.

I just wanted to take a moment and say “Shame on you James Cameron” Skynet did not “Go Live” today and begin the inevitable destruction of mankind as you promises.

In what can only be described as shear boredom for millions of internet users today “Skynet” began trending on the web.

You may recall that during the Sarah Connor Chronicles the date when Skynet would launch and begin the termination of mankind was April 19, 2011 at 20:12 (8:12pm).

Cameron even took time out of his busy schedule to tell TMZ:

“ Kyle Reese said in the first film that it was only ‘one possible future.’  Clearly, not the one we’re in.  Maybe Kyle, Sarah, John and the T-800 changed things enough to steer us away from that possible future.”

Cameron continued with a bit of retrospection on our current society and new problems that have taken center stage since the Terminator series began, “Now instead of nuclear war and the machines taking over, we need to worry about global climate change.  And the machines taking over.  With everybody going through their lives bent over their Blackberries all day long, you could even argue the machines have already won.”

Okay so maybe Cameron didn’t change the date for the TV series by himself, but he did create The Terminator, hence, James Cameron lied, he’s like the Miss Cleo of my movie universe…Sigh.

Just kidding Cameron, just don’t make the same broken promises in Avatar 2.

James Cameron Lied: Skynet Did Not Begin Taking Over Today is a post from: The Inquisitr

Developer Crytek says Hollywood director and occasional grump James Cameron has seen Crysis 2‘s 3D visuals, and “loved what he saw.”

Crytek president Cevat Yerli tells this anecdote in the latest issue of Edge magazine, before going on to make a big claim – that Crysis 2 boasts 3D visuals as impressive as those seen in Avatar:

“I’ll even claim it’s the same as Avatar’s status in 3D. James Cameron has seen Crysis 2, and he loved what he saw because his eyes are trained for 3D more than anyone else’s, and that makes me confident that we have a super-high-end 3D experience on all formats.”

“His eyes are trained for 3D more than anyone else’s”? Utter tosh there, but still, Crysis 2 is looking beautiful enough in 2D, as you can see by looking here. Sadly, I won’t be able to judge Yerli’s claim as I’m yet to see Avatar in 3D, and possess a PC that chugs when tackling games from six years ago.

In a positive sign for Avatar going into the Academy Awards, James Cameron was tonight awarded the Golden Globe for Best Director.

In a clear and concise speech (vs some of the others earlier in the night) Cameron thanked the crew and the actors who made Avatar possible.

Notably he also gave a quote in Navi, the language of the aliens from the film.

At the end of the speech, Cameron thanked the spouses for the four and a half years it took to make the film, then concluded in thanking his wife.

Cameron will likely head into the Academy Awards as the favorite to when the directing Oscar.

Avatar director and thin-skinned man James Cameron had a few words to say about “fanboys” who dared to suggest that his blockbuster Avatar has borrowed the visual style used in Microsoft and Bungie’s series of Halo games. Speaking to G4 about the comparisons between the two, Cameron muttered:

“The funniest thing is when some of the so-called fanboys get up trashing Avatar for looking too much like Halo. Pay attention. If I’m referencing anything, I’m referencing the source work for Halo, which is my own stuff. So I get to do that. Nobody else gets to do that, but I get to do that. My rule, anyway.”

Calm down, JC! Mind you, as arsey as Cameron is getting about this, I do actually agree with the narcissistic old sod here – in fact, sci-fi games as a genre owe a hell of a lot to Alien and its ilk. As resplendent as the first Halo game was (before the series began going slightly downhill), it probably owes Cameron a pint or three.

In other James-Cameron-talks-gaming news, the Canadian director says he could see Avatar having a life of its own as a game series, even if a film sequel was never made. Of course, there already is James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, though apparently it’s, er, a bit rubbish.

James Cameron gets pissy over Avatar/Halo comparisons is a post from: The Inquisitr

Well Avatar is a hit with just about everyone you ask raving about how good the movie is and how it is going to change how we watch them. The only problem is that there is a nasty side-effect to these 3D type movies.

Some people get really nasty headaches when they watch Avatar. Not just minor ones but the real down and dirty nasty types of headaches.

Mark Anderson at the ShadowLocked blog has a great explanation of why it happens for those that are curious but more important he also has a suggestion that will help alleviate or do away with the headaches that can come from watching 3D movies like Avatar. It all has to do with avoiding what is referred to as  the “circle of confusion” which is the ‘Don’t Look At This’ part in the image at the top of this post.

Checking out the ‘circle of confusion’ in Avatar is literally quite a headache, and counterintuitive to our enjoyment of the ‘baked and locked’ 3D planes that we are being presented with. Knowing that depth-of-field is all he has to play with if he’s not going to shoot rocks directly at us, Cameron doesn’t hold back – he relentlessly racks focus in scene after scene.

So the trick to avoiding a headache when watching this movie is to be obedient, and concentrate on the parts of the shot that the focus tells you are ‘important’. Once I understood this at the preview screenings last week, my headache began to clear up, but I was conscious too of the effort of having to ‘zip over’ to the next point of rapid-focus in order to keep up and preserve the 3D illusion.

Avatar, the much anticipated 3D sci-fi flick directed by James Cameron, is getting a game. Best of all, developer Ubisoft will be using the same technology as the film, so that the game is displayed in 3D (though only on Xbox 360 and PS3); it’ll probably be a lot more convincing than the Virtua Boy ever was. Cameron’s involvement is said to be “significant,” while several actors from the film will be lending their voices.

Announced over two years ago, barely a peep has been heard or seen of the game project, but here it is! It, uh, doesn’t appear very 3D, yet it’s undoubtedly lovely – these first screens aren’t too far from how the film looks. Eurogamer has a whole gallery of these available, so head here!
