Apple in just three short years has went from their first ever Smartphone to the most profitable seller of phones in the U.S.

According to current reports, Apple iPhone sales constitute 2.5 percent of market sales, however that share has generated a profit of $1.6 billion from this past summer alone, while Nokia reported an operating profit of $1.1 billion.

Electronista quoted analyst Alex Spektor in regards to Apples success:

“With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, the PC vendor has successfully broken into the mobile phone market in just two years.”

Nokia, unlike Apple has focused largely on low and mid level phones which sell in large amounts, but typically at very small profits. Nokia also focuses much of their efforts outside of the U.S. or independent of carrier contracts which oftentimes leaves U.S. customers buying high end phones at ridiculously high prices.

I have to admit I’m loving that Verizon is finally stepping up and taking on the iPhone attachment to AT&T and what they call their lousy 3G nationwide coverage. Their commercial, released this week, shows the phone on Rudolph’s Island for Misfit Toys where it’s left because of bad 3G connections and its associate with AT&T.

Honesty, AT&T covers just about every major and even small city in the U.S., it’s just that Verizon covers the backwoods of Kentucky just as well as the big cities of Chicago and Santa Monica, which gives Verizon some nice bragging rights.

The commercial was also smart in its attacks, at no point did Verizon Wireless attack the iPhone, actually they praised it, instead poking fun at the AT&T network which really has no grounds to attack Verizon.

With Droid attacking the iPhone and this ad attacking the AT&T network, plus a bevy of low, middle and high end phones being released before Christmas, it looks like Verizon has come out of their three year long iPhone hibernation with all guns firing.

Here’s the iPhone Misfit Island commercial:

The “bleeding-edge” segment of the Internet has gone full-on crazy, so it’s time to give them their medicine… and fast.
First of all, let’s make some definitions:

“technology” does not include only the Internet
“the Internet” does not include only so-called “social networking” sites
“groundbreaking” does not include every minor change or release from X’s favorite site Y

With me so far? Good.

If you’re one of the people that goes insane and hyper-joyous over things like Twitter Lists, you need to seek medical help – these “features”, used in the loosest sense of the software term, are not something to get overly excited about. Facebook Chat opening to external clients is not “groundbreaking” or a “gamechanger”, because that IM process is used for an extremely different purpose than, say, regular instant messaging – in fact, the only real operational difference is that I can be connected to some people I don’t want to talk to via Pidgin. Twitter Lists, small changes to Google’s algorithms, and the like are included in this “excited about nonsense” category.

Furthermore, if you’re someone who claims to “love technology”, but what you really mean is that you’re a Facebook addict, a Twitter whore, and an iPhone fanboy, I have some news for you: you don’t love technology. If you really loved technology, you’d be more interested in real technological items like working space elevator prototypes, the multiple industry revolutions that are fast approaching, or even just software that has real and useful purposes. Reading a few blogs about the Internet and going to Twitter conferences do not make you a technogeek – try PhysOrg.com, almost-science-journals like New Scientist, or even some self-education on the things that make your favorite software or gadgets work.

So when you’re retweeting your favorite self-proclaimed geek pundit’s semi-legible statement about a “groundbreaking” release from “the Internet” using brand new “technology”, stop for a moment to think about what you’re saying – how often do you think Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs cry tears of joy over the latest incremental update from FarmVille?

That’s right – never.

Indianapolis, Indiana – (Inquisitr Wire) – Sunstorm Interactive is excited to announce the launch of their second iPhone and iPod touch game, WW2 Beachhead. It is a fast-action arcade game with amazing graphics and dynamic war-time sound effects in which players have to defend their position against overwhelming enemies. The game is already available on the Apple App Store at a special introductory 50 discount ($0.99).

Buried in a beachhead bunker, players must demonstrate courage, quick reflexes and decision-making ability to stand their ground against the attacking enemy. They play as the last units remaining at the critical line of defense where they fight against ever growing hordes of soldiers, shattering tank fire, and strafing gunfire from fast moving fighter planes. Bonus crates parachute in bringing extra health or more ammo. Players must use precise aim and fast reflexes to suppress the attacking waves and win the chance to fight another day.
Players can choose among three weapons of destruction:

*AA Machine Gun – the primary gun for taking out the enemy. This gun has unlimited ammo and is easy to master.

*Artillery Cannon – firing explosive shells this gun is most effective against troops. One well-placed shot can wipe out a dozens soldiers.

*Rocket Propelled Grenade – the definitive tank killer but also effective on planes or hordes of soldiers.
“We wanted to capture the thrill and action of a war game in a way that was suitable for our mass market customer. WW2 Beachhead does this in a way that will seriously get your blood pumping!” – said Anthony Campiti, president and founder of Sunstorm Interactive Inc.

A new worm that targets jailbroken iPhone’s is reported to be in the wild and infecting iPhones in Australia.

The worm spreads to jailbroken iPhones where the user has not changed the root password for SSH access, and alters infected phones to show Rick Astley wallpaper and the message “ikee is never going to give you up.”

According to Sophos, there at least four variants of the worm written so far, and the “source code is littered with comments from the author suggesting the worm has been written as an experiment.” Another comment “berates affected users for not following instructions when installing SSH, because if they had changed the default password the worm would not have been able to infect them.”

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, you should at the very least change your SSH password to something other than the default (which is “alpine”) or alternatively if safe to do so, drop the jailbreak and reinstall the default iPhone software.

One of the constants that has been with Twitter since day one has been its hands off approach towards the service as it is presented to the users at the Twitter home page. They have let a rich and vibrant 3rd party developer ecosphere build up around the service as they have given the impression more than once that they aren’t interested in expanding beyond the simple interface as found at the Twitter homepage.

As a result we have seen a number of desktop and smartphone clients rise to the surface that have continually added features and improved the user interface experience. That hands off approach however looks like it could be changing and this should make developers who are trying to hook their wagon to Twitter a little nervous. I have written about his in the past but in light of recent moves by Twitter it bears repeating – Twitter is no friend to developers.

The one area that developers might have thought themselves fairly secure had to be developing clients for smartphones like the iPhone but if what Martin Bryant at The Next Web has found out not even that may be as safe as it seems.

In a post yesterday Martin reports on how Jesse Stay, developer behind Social Too, may have spotted what looks like a native Twitter app for the iPhone:

With the new geolocation feature being tested internally and the new version of Seesmic Desktop featuring the ability to read location from tweets that use it, how is Twitter generating location tags for its test tweets? From the looks of the screenshots Stay has uncovered, by using a secret iPhone app.

Now, we’re not suggesting that Twitter is about annoy its third party developer community by launching its own iPhone app. Given its bare-bones look this is probably noting more than a test app for adding geolocation data to tweets.

Now Martin may be being overly kind by suggesting that Twitter doesn’t want to step on any toes but I doubt it very much. We have already seen many times over just how Twitter feels about developers of clients for its service.

Things like turning off Twitter services without any notification to developers leaving them to scramble and deal with irate users. Or, cutting back on the number of API calls clients can make – again without any notification to the developers.

Twitter makes decisions about features they want to add that are for the most part re-interpretations of user developed features that developers have taken and added to their clients. Yet Twitter decides heavy handedly and without any apparent conversation with developers who actually deal with the people using the service change the ideas to what they think is best.

We have seen this with the @reply and most recently with retweeting. and as noted by Rob Diana on his blog Twitter is now trying to add features that will make their home page a better destination by showing you new message notifications.

I understand why Twitter is wanting to do things like this and it all boils down to pageviews. As it stands right now Twitter is probably only seeing half – or less – of the traffic on their home page because of all of the third party clients out there. They need to do something to increase their pageviews in order to even think about living up to their outrageous valuation.

This means that have to get people either using native Twitter client(s) and/or using the Twitter homepage. This is a situation that isn’t going to get any better either as pressure mounts, as it will, for Twitter to be able to find some business revenue that will justify their valuation.

In the end this doesn’t bode well for all those developers out there whether they be web based, desktop based or smartphone based – especially those without any business models of their own other than feeding off of Twitter.

A federal lawsuit filed Wednesday claims that popular App Store app developer Storm8 may have bypassed safeguards in order to obtain data such as phone numbers via games downloaded over 20 million times.

World War, iMobsters, Racing Live, Vampires, Kingdoms, Zombies Live, Rockstars Live and Ninjas Live are some of the iPod Touch and iPhone titles listed on Storm8’s website. Court documents point to “secret code” written into games to circumvent protections preventing apps from collecting data on unsuspecting users:

“…Storm8 makes use of the ‘backdoor’ method to access, collect, and transmit the wireless phone numbers of the iPhones on which its games are installed,” states the complaint, which was filed in US District Court in Northern California. “Storm8 does so or has done so in all of its games.”

The Register points to a column written back in August about privacy concerns and the iPhone. The columnist highlights data-gathering in Storm8’s Vampires Live mini MMORPG:

One of the best selling iPhone app is Vampires Live, a very cool game which is a take off from the current pop culture fascination with vampires. The app is built by Storm8 and is the 8th best selling iPhone app.

The game is essentially an massive multi-player online game which will use your 3G or WiFi connection. 3G is your data plan. So far so good. While playing vampires is fun, it does not involve exchanging phone numbers with other players. In fact, no one needs your phone number to play with you.

But guess what?

Without your permission, Storm8 harvests both your UDID, phone number, email and name (on registration).

(Examples of code.)

As you can see, the personally identifiable information which is the PNUM is being transmitted and I guess stored with Storm8’s servers. For non-technical types, PNUM is phone number and I changed the telephone number on the log to hide my personal number. I would not want just anyone to have my personal phone number. Worst of all, the information is transmitted unencrypted in plain text.

Storm8 is claiming that the data collection was unintentional and part of a “”a bug that has been fixed.” But the prosecution is skeptical, saying the developers used “very specific and specialized software code to do so.” The claimant in the case is hoping to obtain class action status.

A part claimed to be the “iPhone 4 Generation Midboard” has appeared online today from a Chinese site that accurately published details of iPhone 3GS parts a month before the 3GS was officially launched.

The midboard, the frame of the phone that holds the internals, doesn’t show anything that exciting (see picture above) but as Gizmodo notes, it could means that a new iPhone might be on the way, sooner rather than some time next year as per the current iPhone product announcement cycle.

Rumors about the iPhone 4G have been swirling for months, with recent rumors claiming that Apple has been testing prototypes on the Verizon network. Notable there is that the phone runs on LTE, the next generation mobile network that is being embraced by both CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) and GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile, all Australian telcos) providers alike.

It’s hardly panic stations for Apple quite yet, with the iPhone remaining the most popular touch screen phone on the market, backed by an app store that offers over 100,000 applications. But the media attention of late has been focused on phones running Google’s Android OS, notably today the announcement of the stunning Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, a phone that quite simply kills the iPhone when it comes to specs. With around 18 Android based phones expected to be on the market shortly, Apple faces a real challenge to the iPhone’s dominance; who knows, it might just pull a rabbit out of its hat with an earlier than expected new iPhone that offers a range of new features to keep the good fight up with its Android competitors.

If you’ve ever traveled to a land where you don’t speak the native language, you may know the horror of swinging open a door to a bathroom and seeing a man (or perhaps lack of men) at a urinal, who may then begin shouting at you in a language you don’t understand.

If you’ve got an iPhone, you can avoid the inconvenience of being American not being able to speak/read signs in other languages now with the Babelshot app. Most likely named for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s Babelfish (and not the AltaVista translation service of the same name) Babelshot “reads” pictures of signs and other print materials like menus and translates them for you.

According to Macworld, supported languages include:

Afrikaans, Albanian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, and Turkish.

If you’re willing to tap-input the words, you can also translate Arabic, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Macedonian, Persian, Russian, Serbian, Thai, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Obviously, you need a send and receive data to translate, so if you plan on using it, make sure you plan on roaming too. Babelshot costs a reasonable two bucks, and you can get it in the app store now.

The NASA iPhone app is the closest most of us will get to ever visiting space. The program provides users with a real time location finder so we always know exactly where the International Space Station and other spacecraft are located by using mapping software which features border information, satellite imagery and satellite images overlaid onto various maps. While the application also provides pictures from the most current missions and updates about those missions.

The software also provides the mainstays of the NASA page including the “image of the day” database, the official Twitter feed of Nasa, Videos and any available countdown clocks.

The iPhone App is free to download for nerds everywhere and features a decent interface that’s fairly intuitive and inherently full of beautiful shots from space.
World of Goo was one of the best games I played in 2008, bar none. The premise of this clever, gorgeous physics-based puzzler was simple: use tiny, anthropomorphic goo balls to build huge, teetering structures of goo to reach the goal in each level. Though it may not sound it, this was hellishly addictive.

In related news, World of Goo turned one year old today, so the game’s developer 2D Boy is celebrating by selling you the full PC game for whatever you want to pay. A cent. A million bucks. Whatever. In other words, they’ve done a Radiohead.

I paid around $15 for my (Wii) version of World of Goo, but would have paid at least twice that by the time I finished.

Then again, I understand the temptation here. The temptation is to be a tightass and pay a cent for this sublime bit of software. That’s fine. Apparently, 2D Boy wouldn’t mind that. Alternatively, you could not be a jerk, and pay something more deserving, because if any game deserved your support, it’s World of Goo. Whatever you decide to do, go here to get your goo on (though note that the site is currently very shaky).

Oh, and in other related news, 2D Boy has confirmed an iPhone version is in the works:

Hotness!

And it’s free, if you shell out for a $500 Viper SmartStart system.

Another day, another groundbreaking iPhone app. This time, Directed Electronics has made a modern convenience even more convenient with a new twist on remote start. Formerly located on a car’s key fob, remote start is something you really wish you had if you don’t- and those who do are generally untenably smug about it on the coldest winter days, when you’re already freezing, ice-crusted and your car door froze shut.

If you were planning on finally biting the bullet and buying a remote start system this year, the whole deal just got a lot more feature-rich. Before, remote start was located on your key fob and required being within a certain distance of your vehicle. (I can imagine if you work in a large building or have to park far from your location, this can be a bit of a pain.) With the new iPhone app, you can start your engine, warm it up or cool it down on hot days, activate the alarm and open the trunk with your iPhone or iPod Touch.

A new system will set you back $499, but if you already have a Viper alarm system, upgrading is a mere $299. The first year of service is included in that price, and after that, it’s $29.99 a year to keep it going.

Canada’s smartphone market will further heat up in November following the separate announcement Tuesday by Bell Canada and Telus Corporation of plans to roll out their Apple iPhone 3G and 3Gs models.

Their move is expected to put pressure on Rogers Communications, which used to be the exclusive distributor of Apple smartphones.

Bell, which is launching the smartphone ahead of schedule, recently completed its upgrade of its wireless network in the direction of the high-speed packet access technology, which is the network standard that iPhones would work. Bell’s original timetable was to launch its iPhone by February 2010.

Previously, Bell and Telus used the code-division multiple access network technology. Rogers had been using HSPA technology since 2004.

Bell Canada president and chief executive officer George Cope said in a statement, “The new HSPA network executes on our strategic imperatives to accelerate wireless in Canada and to invest in next-generation broadband networks – supporting our goal for Bell to be recognized by customers as Canada’s leading communications company.”

Telus said it will provide more information about prices and availability of its coming offering in the next few weeks.

Previously a Blackberry only app (but with a few hundred thousand users), Buzzd hit the iPhone today with their real-time city guide.

Using a ranking algorithm called the “buzzmeter,” Buzzd pulls data from places like Twitter (and Buzzd, of course) to return hyperlocal, hyperupdated results on what venues are hot now. Like, right now. So, if you’re lucky enough to live in a place with more than one hot spot, Buzzd can tell you where everyone (who Tweeted about it) is headed tonight. Drunksourcing, if you will.

You don’t need to register to access data from the app, but in order to “buzz” venues, you do have to be a member. When you open the app on your iPhone, a list of local venues pop up, organized by “buzz.” You can sort venues by distance from you and see them on a map, and when you select a venue, you can read a list of its “buzzes.” One thing to bear in mind if a volume of “buzz” is important to you is that the app and website don’t seem to recognize duplicates. When I click on the top venue around my admittedly boring suburban NYC town, I get the same “buzz” several times (”Pizza is amazing!!!!! Try it!!!”)

Duplicates aside, these little one line micro-reviews really suit the medium. If you, like me, use your phone to find places to eat or go while you’re in on the way to dinner, it’s nice not to have to sift through a lengthy Yelp review that’s got way too many things going on to relay at a stoplight. (Or in a cab, city-dwellers.) Looking up a popular local Irish bar tells me via two reviews that it’s awesome but only on weekends, and one review recommends wings. That’s like, all you need to know when you’re five minutes away from dinner or drinks.

Like Foursquare (with which it works in concert- Buzzd finds places for you to check in), it will become smarter and more relevant as it draws momentum from users. And also like Foursquare, it’s poised to shake hands with local venues to target deals and such locally, which is great for users and the venues themselves. (The little star next to some venues seems to indicate that the venue has provided a description to Buzzd.)

The app is free, and available now. Video demo, below:

One of the hottest verticals in iPhone apps in the last 6 months has been GPS applications, but most share a similar trait: they’re not free and in the case of some, they’re highly expensive.

Eventually though someone had to come out with a free GPS application, and Trapster was released in the iTunes App store earlier this year. As the name suggests, Trapster is primarily focused on identifying speed traps and similar urban hazards such as red light cameras and fixed speed cameras. The data in Trapster comes from a combination of publicly available data and user generated contributions, with users encouraged to submit speed traps when they see them.

As a trap detector, Trapster works a treat. The application offers a verbal warning as you approach a trap, so you can adjust your driving to suit. The app also uses a ranking algorithm to rank the quality of user contributions, so although in theory you could feed it false data, others are able to mark your contributions as being incorrect so you’re unable to game the system too much.

The other positive with Trapster is how extensive its database is; unlike a typical GPS app, Trapster offers coverage across multiple countries, so you can use it in United States as well as Europe or Australia (presuming you’ve got data access for your phone as you’re traveling.)

If you’re looking for an iPhone application that warns you of traps, I can’t recommend Trapster enough. If you’re looking for a full featured and accurate GPS, you might want to look elsewhere. I put Trapster to the test Sunday in a 45 minute drive to a semi-rural location. Trapster offers (like any GPS) the ability to map your destination, and it also offers turn by turn instructions (which is a huge positive), but that’s where the good stuff ends. Despite overlaying data on a Google Map, Trapster doesn’t tap into Google for directions or location data. Unlike a typical GPS it also doesn’t offer alternative choices when you don’t get the address 100% right either.

My first experience was pure frustration as I was simply unable to plot where I wanted to go because Trapster didn’t recognize the location I was entering. Flipping back into Google Maps I bought up the exact address (without place name) and punched it in. Then things got worse. The app suggested I go way out of my way to get to where I was going…as in a route that made absolutely zero sense. I knew roughly the way to go, so I drove off expecting it to re-route as I went along, but it didn’t do that either. The only way to get route information from that point was to re-enter the destination details…but even then, it was still offering bizarre recommendations. Having finally gotten onto some country roads, Trapster took us to the wrong address…by about 5 kms as the bird flies, and no where near via road where we wanted to go. In the end, it was back to Google Maps to get to where we wanted to go.

For a free app, it’s probably not fair to complain too much about Trapster’s failure in route mapping, but likewise offering a feature so endemically bad does tarnish slightly the love I feel for it. I’ll switch back to my old fashioned GPS next trip, and leave Trapster on to avoid having to contribute further to Government coffers.
