In a case that is probably not the only one of its ilk, a woman whose iPhone alarm failed to work on New Year’s Day claims the resultant job tardiness has lead to her dismissal.

According to Boston.com, 28-year-old Lindsay Garvey fired off a nastygram email to Steve Jobs about the incident, although she says she has not heard back. Garvey huffed:

“Upon my termination, I was told that I was wonderful, but that my tardiness was unfair to the other employees,” she wrote. “So, Mr. Jobs, I’d like to let you know that you have officially, directly contributed to unemployment in 2011… If you had warned me about the glitch, I could have at least picked up a $5, battery-operated alarm clock that would have saved my job. Now I’m unemployed in a time when jobs are not easily had, and I am short on my rent.”

While a bit heavy-handed with the hyperbole, Garvey’s tale is enough to strike fear into most iPhone users. Nowadays many people rely on their smartphones, e-readers and MP3 players for this simple auxiliary functions. Luddites will argue not to rely on a phone’s alarm, but there’s no overt reason to believe a device’s stated capabilities won’t work aside from the whole “iPhones not making phone calls” issue. Having to set two alarms in case one doesn’t work seems a bit excessive, despite inevitable protestations to the controversy.

Garvey’s former employer commented on the iPhone relating firing:

“Unfortunately, (Garvey’s) tardiness on New Year’s Day was not an isolated incident and it is with great regret that she was let go,” wrote David Flanagan, co-owner of Foundry on Elm. “We value all of the team members of our staff and hold them to a very high standard of excellent hospitality.”

iPhone users are reporting a less than smooth transition with today’s much hyped, tweeted and blogged about iPhone 3.0 OS update.

It’s nearly impossible to keep up with the stream of complaints on Twitter, with many users reporting they ”cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable.” A handful of users are reporting their “activation network cannot be found,” including one unlucky Gizmodo staffer. Some tweets also refer to the phone going into “emergency mode,” rendering it unusable save for 911 calls. And a CNET reader sent in a harrowing tale of being cast adrift in a sea of iPhonelessness by the fruity computer giant- until at least 6pm!

“…Reader Michael Samstag wrote in to say his iPhone was rendered unusable when he tried to install the update. “It has the ‘connect to iTunes’ message and will only allow emergency calls,” he says. “I signed up for the ‘Apple callback’ for tech support and they called back and put me on hold for 20-minutes. Then the call got disconnected and now the earliest callback time is between 6:15 p.m. EDT and 6:30 p.m. EDT. So, I’m looking at having no cell for a minimum of three hours, probably longer.”

(Lest I sound unsympathetic, I am among the “without a landline” folk, so if this update breaks my phone I will be royally pissed off, and sans phone. I’m still installing the hell out of iTunes updates to get to the iPhone update. iFeelYourPain, Michael.)

Others are reporting minor but annoying glitches such as popular apps Fring and Skype not working. There are scattered reports of problems of proportional importance, such as losing contacts or all your text messages. Still, some users are focusing on the positive, as seen on Twitter:

Thanks to iPhone OS 3 now I can text photos of my d**k rather than having to email them. It’s about time.

With near certainty a new iPhone will be launched at Apple’s WWDC Conference in San Francisco Monday, and the lead up to the launch has (as usual) involved no shortage of speculation and so-called leaks.

Some of the leaked details will undoubtedly hold true, such as increased memory in new models, and video capture. But some leaks are not only far off the mark, they’re purposely trying to take the piss.

Take for example the shot above from the Italian site SpazioCullulaire which supposedly shows a store inventory listing in Canada and is being reported by numerous sites as being real. We picked it up from The Next Web who described the shot as “believable.” Look carefully at the second last item on the list.

“Apple iPhone Video iChat 64Gb/ Yellow W/Fluffy Bunnies“

The emphasis is mine, but it’s the key: this list claims that an iPhone will come with Fluffy Bunnies. Some how we just don’t think so. The option above fluffy bunnies claims that there will be an iPhone that is “Green with Flowers”….. yeah…ok… someone pass the bong. Still, in the event that I’m wrong come Monday, I guess I know what my next iPhone will have on it
