Riding out Hurricane Ike…in a boat

There’s brave, then there’s riding out a Hurricane in a boat and recording the experience on video, and that’s exactly what the above video documents.

The decision making process though from an economic perspective though is simple: you’ve got a better chance of your boat surviving a hurricane at sea than your boat has moored in a marina, however that’s excluding the cost of your life in the equation

The 113 feet (34.5m) former research vessel Odyssey chose a spot in Galveston Bay, executed a 3-point anchor maneuver, laid out plenty of chain, then rode out the storm.

See Hurricane Ike and Gustav Aftermath Online

Millions of people followed Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike online — and now, you can see aerial images of the storms’ aftermath from your computer, too.

Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the people behind the National Hurricane Center) has been converted into image overlays on Google Earth. One shows home and road damage near Gilchrist, Texas. The image on the left is before and on the right is after:

This shot shows an oil spill from hurricane damage near Crystal Beach, Texas (same before-and-after setup):

And this one gives you a glimpse into the extent of dock damage along the coast of Galveston:

You can grab the full before-and-after imagery from Hurricane Ike here and from Hurricane Gustav here. Both are in KMZ files for viewing in Google Earth.

If you’re interested in supporting families hit by the storms, you might want to check out CharityNavigator.org. It’ll let you search for any charity name to make sure it’s legit before handing over your cash or account information — and with the high amount of storm scamming around the Web, it can never hurt to be extra careful.

With Hurricane Ike crossing the Texas coast, and over 1 million people evacuated from low lying coastal areas such as Galveston, the world waits for the storm to do its worst.

Storm junkies or those wanting to know what’s going on in affected areas can watch Hurricane Ike live online.

Ustream.tv

Ustream.tv includes a number of live feeds from the area, including the one above. Others to check: here and here. This stream is some storm chasers, so they may drop out, but they are moving around the area, at least as I write this post.

Webcams

Traffic cams are available from Houston here.

There are a number of Galveston cams on this page, but most seem down at the time of writing.

The Weather Channel has a decent range here.

Local media

KHOU.com, ABC13.com, Click2Houston.com and MyFoxHouston.com are offering a variety of live and recorded video.
