Tuukka Rask was on pace to get a nice long contract extension with the Boston Bruins in the wake of Tim Thomas’ decision to not play next season. He served as backup to Thomas and played well when he played.

But instead of the big contract some expected, The Boston Globe reports Rask signed a one-year, $3.5 million extension. Rask is coming off a two-year, $2.5 million contract, so the paycheck is still a raise, but the one year deal means a lot.

Tuukka Rask has never started the majority of the regular-season games in any season in his NHL career, so Boston is right to be cautious about the length of the deal.

CSNNE.com‘s Joe Haggerty writes, “A one-year contract allows the Bruins to make Rask the team’s certain No. 1 goalie for the first time, while also giving them a better gauge of his value before they wheel out big money or a long term commitment.”

Haggerty added that some believed the 25-year old Rask would ink a four-year deal in excess of $12-13 million.

Tuukka Rask went 11-8-3 with a 2.05 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage last year but his season ended due to a groin injury in March. If he can stay healthy, he looks poised to be an ace for the Bruins this season.

Moreover, WEEI.com’s Big Bad Blog reports that some have already speculated a one-year deal is in place to groom the Bruins’ goalie of the future, but they say that isn’t the case.

“Malcolm Subban doesn’t have anything to do with this,” blogger DJ Bean wrote. “The 18-year-old OHL goaltender and 2012 24th overall pick is still years and years away from being an NHL goaltender, so there’s no chance that the B’s gave (Tuukka) Rask one year with the idea of replacing him with Subban in 2013.”

This Boston hockey mom had seen enough.

Fed up with players fighting in a youth Boston Raptors vs. Pride contest and referees standing by doing nothing to stop it, she marched onto the ice and demanded they stop, The Huffington Post reported.

The mom was stopped by a referee, who tried to usher her back off the playing surface, but he too became a target of her anger for not controlling the rowdy players. Though the fight looked ready to blossom into a full-fledged brawl between the teams, referees were standing by watching and looked unwilling to interfere to stop the fight, Yahoo Sports reported.

Her involvement backs a national trend of over-involvement by parents in youth sports. A national survey found that many youth sports players would rather their parents not attend games at all because of the distractions they cause, Miami’s CBS4 reported. The athletes said parents yell too much, make them and their teammates nervous and place high pressure on them to play better and win games, CBS4 reported. Instances of parents starting brawls at youth sports games underscores this trend, the report noted.

For some athletes, the problems with parents continue once youth sports have ended. Bernard Tomic, a 19-year-old professional tennis player, recently had officials at the Sony Ericsson tournament remove his rowdy father.

“He’s annoying – I know he’s my father – but he’s annoying me,” he told match officials, CBS4 reported.

In the case of the Boston hockey mom, at least being annoying achieved something—the players stopped fighting as soon as they saw her on the ice.

NHL player Henrik Zetterberg took an unnecessary series of hits from Shea Weber during the Wednesday night game between the Red Wings and the Predators, a game which ended 2-3 in favor of the Predators.

It would seem as if the NHL’s message earlier in the season, players targeting the head of an opponent (even if by accident) would be disciplined accordingly, was without merit as Weber was fined a mere $2,500 for attacking Zetterberg.  NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan released a statement in regards to the incident which read:

“We felt this was a reckless and reactionary play on which Weber threw a glancing punch and then shoved Zetterberg’s head into the glass.  We reached out to Detroit following the game and were informed that Zetterberg did not suffer an apparent injury and should be in the lineup for Game 2.”

Weber definitely targeted the head of an opponent and while Zetterberg is not currently injured, he may suffer from long-term repercussions down the road as a result of numerous blows to his head.  Pierre-Marc Bouchard went flying face-first into the boards back and was sidelined over one-year later with concussion-like symptoms.  After the initial blow, he had been feeling uncomfortable and started experiencing symptoms after being elbowed over a year later.

If the NFL is intent on clearly conveying their message that it’s unacceptable to target the head of an opponent, they’re certainly not doing so by fining Shea a petty $2,500 for very obviously directing numerous blows towards the head of his opponent, Henrik.

John Tortorella, coach of the New York Rangers hockey team, was fined a hefty $20,000 for his critical remarks regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins.  In particular, his commentary regarding Derek Stepan’s injury derived from a hit he took from Brooks Orpik has earned him this considerable fine.  In regards to the hit, coach Tortorella was quoted having said:

“I wonder what would happen if we did it to their two whining stars. I wonder what would happen. So I’m anxious to see what happens with the league. There’s no respect amongst players. None. It’s sickening.”

After his verbal assault which targeted Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, which he referenced as “their two whining stars,” Tortorella continued to trash talk the team as was quoted by USA Today having said:

“It’s one of the most arrogant organizations in the league. They whine about this all the time and look what happens.”

Last January, Tortorella was hit with a whopping $30,000 fine for insinuating that NBC and the league were intentionally trying to push the Winter Classic game into overtime; he later apologized.

Crosby’s response to being called a whiner by the Rangers coach was simply that Tortorella’s comments were “garbage.”  Talking to Pittsburgh news reporters, Crosby was quoted saying:

“I don’t know what he’s talking about. I mean, if you want you can put a camera on us all game, put a camera on Callahan all game. You’ll see who’s over there more. He should worry about his own players.”

The poster for Goon, a hockey comedy starring Jay Baruchel and Sean William Scott has been banned when Toronto officials found the sexually suggestive  tongue in between two fingers pose on the poster to be lewd and offensive.

The poster promoting the film was released two weeks ago and since then  38 posters in the city were taken down, despite local dsitributor Alliance Films having no clue about the sudden ban until after it happened.

The film is about a bouncer (Scott) who gets touched by the hand of God, and eventually finds his way to the rink, and joins the worst hockey team imaginable, and through the film inspires the team and takes them to new heights. Baruchel plays teammate and new friend.

The cast are currently promoting the film in Toronto, so when asked about the ban Baruchel had this to say, “Another classic example of the cultural divide between Quebec and Ontario, I guess.” When director Mike Dowsar was asked about the incident he took the comical approach and said, “I question whether this has to do with Jay’s tongue or his ability to burn Maple Leafs jerseys, neither of which are offensive in any way,”

Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (Seth Rogen’s best friend and writing partner), co wrote the script together based on the book Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey, written by Doug Smith and Adam Frattasio. Baruchel also produced the film as well.

This footage of bears ice hockey match shows how…well….bears play ice hockey. I’m not really sure how else to describe it. I also thought that maybe it was fake at first, but it would appear to be real. Remember: in Soviet Russia, bears play team sports.
