SOPA, the Stop Online Privacy Act, is regarded by many as a potential death blow to the internet. Internet giants like Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh, Internet creators like Vint Cerf, major companies like AOL, Google, and Facebook, and Mythbusting celebrities like Adam Savage have all come out against SOPA.

And now Hitler, regarded by many as the most evil man in history, has picked his side in this epic battle over the internet.

Hitler, who apparently puts videos of himself singing Justin Bieber and Katy Perry on Youtube, is outraged with the United States for even considering a bill that would alter the landscape of the internet.

Yes, Hitler is against SOPA.

The UK’s largest bookstore chain has had to apologize after one of its stores promoted Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf  (translation: My Battle) as “the perfect present” for Christmas. Er, oops?

It’s not quite as sinister as it sounds, though. Staff at Waterstones stores are encouraged to write out tags for books they would personally recommend to customers. Said tags are then displayed alongside the books in a special ‘Our Staff Recommends’ section. At the Waterstones store in Huddersfield, one staff member described Mein Kampf as:

“An essential read for anyone seeking to understand one of history’s most despicable figures. A shocking read and a vital warning for future generations.”

… which is hardly an endorsement of Hitler’s warped ideas, except the pre-printed corner of the tag read “The perfect present…” When Jewish salesman Jonathan Levine saw this and complained to Waterstones, he recounted how:

“I was told it was ‘a Christmas bestseller which sold really well.’ A dubious justification indeed for selling this hateful work.”

Mein Kampf was first published in Germany in two volumes, in 1925 and 1926. The book describes an alleged Jewish conspiracy to take over the world, and outlines Hitler’s political ideology. It was released seven years before Hitler rose to power in Germany, but has been banned there since the Second World War.

The book still sells around 20,000 copies a year worldwide (mostly to fascist nutjobs, one would assume), though U.S. publisher Houghton Miffen gives all proceeds to charity.

Waterstones has since apologized to Levine, and reminded staff of their responsibilities with such books.

While his followers are busy crying hysterically over the death of Kim Jong Il, Arizona Sen. John McCain issued an official comment about the North Korean leader.

“The world is a better place now that Kim Jong Il is no longer in it. For mre than six decades, people in North Korean have been consigned to lives of dire poverty and cruel oppression under one of the most totalitarian regimes the world has ever known.”

The Senator added that Jong Il’s death presents a “historic opportunity” for Koreans, while calling for China to play a lead role together with other countries, including the US, in shaping a peaceful transition to a unified, democratic, and independent Korean Peninsula.”

“The death of Kim Jong Il is a historic opportunity to end the long suffering of Koreans in the north and to deepen the security of Northeast Asia and the world.”

More than anything else, Senator McCain expressed his satisfaction about this death and assured where Kim Jong Il is right now.

“I can only express satisfaction that the Dear Leader is joining the likes of Qaddafi, Bin Laden, Hitler, and Stalin in a warm corner of hell.”

Joe Simon, the co-creator of Captain America and one of the comic-book industry’s most revered writers, artists and editors, has died.  Simon created or co-created many legendary characters in the 1930s-1940s Golden Age of Comic Books and served as the first editor of Timely Comics, the company that would turn into Marvel Comics.

With his partner, artist Jack Kirby, he co-created Captain America, one of comics’ most enduring superheroes, and the team worked extensively on such features at DC Comics as the 1940s Sandman and Sandy the Golden Boy, and co-created the Newsboy Legion, the Boy Commandos, and Manhunter. Simon & Kirby creations for other comics publishers include Boys’ Ranch, Fighting American and the Fly. In the late 1940s, the duo created the field of romance comics, and were among the earliest pioneers of horror comics. Simon, who went on to work in advertising and commercial art, also founded the satirical magazine Sick in 1960, remaining with it for a decade. He briefly returned to DC Comics in the 1970s.

Celebrity chef Mario Batali- who everyone has still really not forgiven for having a hand in foisting the trend of Crocs on the world so thoroughly- has been forced to issue an apology after some colorful descriptions of bankers got Batali in hot water, sans bouquet garni.

Batali was speaking at the Time Person of the Year panel earlier this week, and made the comments which were then widely distributed on Forbes.com. Batali drew historical comparisons between banks and the impact bankers have had on the state of the world economy in recent years. Batali remarked:

“So the ways the bankers have kind of toppled the way money is distributed and taken most of it into their hands is as good as Stalin or Hitler and the evil guys. They’re not heroes, but they are people that had a really huge effect on the way the world is operating.”

Although in context it is clear Batali was not making a standard reductio ad Hitlerum comparison, his off-the-cuff remarks still drew a tremendous amount of ire both online and off. Batali quickly retracted the statement after commenters began threatening not to patronize Batali’s New York establishments, including Babbo, Del Posto, Otto and Lupa. The chef said:

“To remove any ambiguity about my appearance at yesterday’s Time Person of the Year panel, I want to apologize for my remarks. It was never my intention to equate our banking industry with Hitler and Stalin, two of the most evil, brutal dictators in modern history.”

You may know by now that Constantin Films has been finding and deleting the zillions of YouTube parodies of a scene from the film Downfall, where Adolf Hitler rants about iPads or content farms or something in pop culture.

Even the director of the film, Oliver Hirschbiegel, found the meme pretty funny and said he found the joke to be a “compliment” in an interview:

“Someone sends me the links every time there’s a new one. I think I’ve seen about 145 of them! Of course, I have to put the sound down when I watch. Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn’t get a better compliment as a director.”

Arguments about fair use and internet censorship abound, with a fair bit of “hey, no one would have seen your movie if it wasn’t for us!” thrown in for good measure. So as word spread that one of the most prolific video memes was under attack for copyright infringement, the internet did what it does best- it spat up a parody wherein Hitler rants about Hitler rants being removed from YouTube for copyright related reasons.

Roseanne Barr is back in the news this week after a controversial photo shoot with Jewish hipster mag Heeb.

Barr did a layout with the publication which depicts the former prime-time queen as a Hitler-esque (complete with tiny mustache) housewife removing a tray of burnt gingerbread “Jew Cookies” from an oven. In the piece, Barr characteristically bares all as she prepares to embrace another controversy.

As the “Domestic Goddess” dons the famous moustache, transforming into “Domestic Goddess Hitler,” I notice that she’s beginning to have fun. She nails the Fuehrer’s facial expressions with twisted glee, and as she takes the burnt gingerbread “Jew Cookies” out of the oven it occurs to me that Barr may be the last celebrity utterly incapable of giving a f*ck—a quality theoretically easy to embody until it’s time to face the practical repercussions. “Franklin Ajae, Paul Mooney, Mort Sahl and Dick Gregory’s passings will tear my kishkas out,” Barr laments. “They gave everything they had to just tell the truth, and they couldn’t make a decent living because of the choice they made—not selling out to Hollywood.”

While Barr’s recent party trick is certainly offensive and controversial, the Jewish grandma did end up with at least one fan. Says the article’s author:

When the photographer suggests that we pose together for a quick snapshot, I put my arm around this slightly eccentric drinker and pot smoker who gets off on dressing like a Nazi, and it dawns on me: I adore her.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has often been called a nazi, but little did we know that his idolatry went as far as praising Hitler.

In an interview with The Times, Ecclestone said that Hitler was a great dictator that “got things done,” and who’s mistakes were caused by the persuasion of others.

“In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done” Ecclestone told the paper.

“In the end he got lost, so he wasn’t a very good dictator because either he had all these things and knew what was going on and insisted, or he just went along with it . . . so either way he wasn’t a dictator.”

Besides the comments being offensive, WWII historians and students know very well that the opposite was true; the fall of the Third Reich was not due to Hitler being persuaded to make bad decisions, but by Hitler imposing his will and ignoring those around him. The list is long (and these are but a few examples): at Stalingrad the General’s on the ground knew that the exposed flanks manned by the minor Axis powers were a great risk, but Hitler ignored advice to reinforce the flanks and Stalingrad was encircled. Over Britain, Hitler ignored the advice of his generals and switched to bombing cities instead of critical defense infrastructure (after the British had bombed Berlin), turning the tide of the Battle of Britain by giving the RAF a break. That decision also resulted in the cancellation of Operation Sealion, the invasion of Britain. Even as Germany switched to the defensive, Hitler ignored time and time again the advice of those around him, causing enormous losses.

The comments should really come as a great surprise though: Ecclestone’s friend and head of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is a noted fascist, not only because he is the son of Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists, but because he likes dressing up as a Nazi in sex play. Double bonus: Ecclestone believes Mosley would make a great Prime Minister of Britain.
