Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has had enough of the political game. The Secretary of State, Former United States Senator, Former First Lady, Former Presidential Candidate says she has enough of politics and wants to relax for a while .

She told a meeting of State Department employees,

“I have made it clear that I will certainly stay on until the president nominates someone and that transition can occur. But I think after 20 years, and it will be 20 years, of being on the high wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that, it would be probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am.”

She left the door open that she may get back into the fray by saying,

“everyone always says that when they leave these jobs.”

As the Secretary of State Clinton cannot engage in any activity that even resembles partisan politics. She said she hasn’t even paid attention to or watched any of the Republican Presidential debates.

Clinton said,

“It is a little odd for me to be totally out of an election season. But, you know, I didn’t watch any of those debates.”

Clinton fully expects that with such a heated election cycle coming up that international affairs will probably be on the back burner of the President and those in government.

She then joked,

“The good news is maybe we can even get more done if they are not paying attention, so just factor that in.”

How do you think Hillary Clinton performed as Secretary of State?

The recent comments made by U.S. Government officials have aroused anger and suspicion in Israel. During the last week, three high ranking members of the Obama Administration have given speeches that have made many Israelis wonder if the United States has any respect for the fact that Israel is a sovereign nation. The speeches by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Howard Gutman have caused concerns in Israel that the United States is trying to force the Israeli Government to enact policies that would benefit the United States while doing serious harm to the security of Israel. Once again, the issue of whether the fact that the United States gives aid and support to Israel allows the United States to directly influence the leadership and politics of Israel, has been raised front and center.

The uproar began on December 1, 2011 when U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, Howard Gutman, outraged his audience when he said, “A distinction should be made between traditional anti-Semitism, which should be condemned and Muslim hatred for Jews, which stems from the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.” Gutman, a former high dollar fundraiser for the Obama campaign, went on to say that if Israel were to make peace with the Palestinians, the Muslim sentiments against Jews would be “significantly diminished.” Gutman’s remarks were made at a Jewish conference on anti-Semitism organized by the European Jewish Union. Israeli news service, YNet, said “legal experts in the audience were “visibly stunned” by Gutman’s comments, and the next speaker gave a “scathing rebuttal” to his remarks.”

On December 2, 2011 Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, added fuel to the fire during a speech at the Sabin Forum, an annual gathering of American and Israeli policymakers. Panetta said, “that Israel needs to “get to the damn table” to negotiate with the Palestinians and “mend fences” with its neighbors.” The Anti-Defamation League expressed “surprise and dismay” at a speech that it said “disproportionately put the onus on Israel to overcome its isolation.” The reaction in Israel was even stronger with many posters to mainstream newspapers expressing deep anger and mistrust towards the Obama Administration’s continuous policy of blaming Israel for the lack of a peace deal while putting no pressure on the Palestinians to compromise or negotiate. The majority of Israelis feel strongly that it takes two to tango and that only Israel has pulled a chair up to the peace table.

The next day the pressure on Israel from the Obama Administration went on unabated, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton continued the orgy of Israel bashing at a closed session of the Saban Conference. In typical fashion, the “most transparent administration in U.S. history” once again refused to release a transcript of Clinton’s statements but “a senior U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Clinton’s remarks were considered off the record, confirmed that she expressed concerns about developments in Israel, including the NGO law and recent comments from ultraconservative politicians.” Clinton also commented on internal Israeli issues such as the attempts by the ultra Orthodox to segregate women on certain Israeli bus lines.

The reaction to Secretary of State Clinton’s remarks elicited a flurry of rebuttals by Israeli Officials. Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said Clinton’s remarks were “absolutely exaggerated. Israeli democracy is alive, breathing, kicking and liberal.” Many in Israel think that the U.S. officials should be focusing on the fact that for several years now the Palestinians have constantly refused to sit down with Israel for face to face negotiations on the peace process. There is particular concern in Israel that even when Israel took the unprecedented step of a 10 month building freeze in the Settlements, the Palestinians refused to negotiate.

Israel has stated many times that it is willing to sit down and negotiate face to face with the Palestinians. Israel has expressed the principals of its parameters for peace. These principals state that Israel is the nation of the Jewish people with its historical, eternal capital in an undivided Jerusalem. Israel has also clearly said that the refugees are the responsibility of the Arab states and it will not allow 5 million Arab refugees to flood into Israel and change Israel from the Jewish state to another Islamic state. There are already 56 Islamic nations and Israel demands the right to be the one national homeland of the Jewish people.

How do you feel? Is it fair for Israel to be the nation of the Jewish people; especially considering that there are already 56 Islamic nations in the U.N.? Do you think Israel should be accepted as the one nation of the Jewish people?

On Thursday night, President Obama phoned activist Aung San Suu Kyi, who just announced that her National League for Democracy party would run as a party in Burma, to make sure that she supports US engagement toward Burmese government reform. After Suu Kyi confirmed her support, Obama announced that Hillary Clinton would be making a visit to Burma, the first visit by a US secretary of state to Burma in more than 50 years.

Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has spent most of the last two decades as a political prisoner in Burma. Her release last year was seen as a sign of political progress.

A senior administration official said that Obama and Aung San Suu Kyi:

“Reviewed the progress that has been made in Burma, including her release, her dialogue with the government, the release of some political prisoners, and legislation that could open the political system further. It was important to the President that she welcome this deeper engagement by the US.”

According to the New York Post, Suu Kyi welcomed a visit from Clinton and encouraged the US to work with the Burmese government.

ABC News reports that Hillary Clinton will travel to Burma in December to see if the US can help Burma’s historically repressive government take steps toward reform. President Obama said:

“If Burma fails to move down the path of reform, it will continue to face sanctions and isolation. But if it seizes this moment, then reconciliation can prevail, and millions of people may get the chance to live with a greater measure of freedom, prosperity and dignity. And that possibility is too important to ignore.”

Here’s a video from CNN.

Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Aung San Suu Kyi are hopeful that Burma is heading in the right direction, but group Human Rights Watch is still a little skeptical. Human Rights Watch writes:

“With this backdrop, it is too early to know whether the government’s change of tone and talk of reform is cynical window-dressing or evidence that significant change will come to the country.”

Ellen DeGeneres is now officially working for the U.S. Government. Ellen was just named a special envoy for global AIDS awareness by Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

Clinton said:

“Ellen is going to bring not only her sharp wit and her big heart, but her impressive TV audience and more than 8 million followers on Twitter, to raise awareness and support for this effort. I know we can look forward to many contributions from Ellen and her loyal fans across the globe.”

Ellen responded in a statement:

“I’m honored to have been chosen by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as Special Envoy for Global AIDS awareness. The fight against AIDS is something that has always been close to my heart. And I’m happy that I can use my platform to educate people and spread hope. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go look up what ‘envoy’ means.”

USA Today reports that Ellen has over 8 million Twitter followers and close to 6 million fans on Facebook. Ellen will also be able to use her show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, to raise AIDS awareness.

Ellen is already involved in several humanitarian causes. The openly gay talk show host has used her show on several occasions to talk about issues that are dear to her heart. Here’s what Ellen had to say about gay bullying after the death of Tyler Clementi.

Ambassador Eric Goosby, head of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), said that he was “thrilled that we have someone like Ellen DeGeneres on our team to raise awareness that we are on the path to beating this devastating disease.”

The Obama administration also announced $60 million in an additional funding to help fight AIDS in Africa.

Do you think Ellen Degeneres is the right choice to help raise AIDS awareness?

Dorothy Rodham, Hillary Clinton’s mother, died today after an illness.

Hillary canceled a trip to London and Turkey on Monday after her mother fell ill. According to a release from the Clinton Foundation, Dorothy died shortly after midnight in Washington surrounded by her family. She was 92.

The statement described Dorothy Rodham as “a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.”

Dorothy was the last remaining parent of Hillary and Bill Clinton and the last grandparent for Chelsea Clinton. The family did not elaborate on the illness.

The statement from the Clinton Foundation reads:

“Dorothy Howell Rodham was born in Chicago on June 4, 1919 and died shortly after midnight on November 1, 2011 in Washington, D.C., surrounded by her family. Her story was a quintessentially American one, largely because she wrote it herself. She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was…”

The Daily Mail reports that Dorothy Rodham was born into a dysfunctional family in Chicago. When she was 8-years-old, she moved to California to live with her grandparents, but her situation there wasn’t much better.

In Hillary Clinton’s autobiography, “Living History,” she writes:

“I thought often of my own mother’s neglect and mistreatment at the hands of her parents and grandparents, and how other caring adults filled the emotional void to help her… I’m still amazed at how my mother emerged from her lonely early life as such an affectionate and level-headed woman.”

The Clinton Foundation is asking for people to make a donation in Dorothy’s memory to George Washington Hospital, or to the Heifer Project, in lieu of sending flowers.

A recent poll reported by Bloomberg has found that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the most popular politician working today. The study says that two-thirds of the country view Clinton in a favorable light, while a third of respondents are battling “buyer’s remorse” over electing Barack Obama and not Hillary Clinton into office.

One Florida woman told Bloomberg:

“Looking back, I wonder if she would have been a stronger leader, knowing the games and the politics and all that goes on,” while adding, “I don’t think she would have bent as much.”

It’s not all rosy numbers though, 47% of those interviewed believe that the current state of affairs would have been close to what they are today regardless of who was elected with one pollster revealing, “Some of her appeal is that she is not Barack Obama.”

The study also revealed that 13% of the people polled felt she would actually be a worse president.

When examining only Democrats they found that 57% of party affiliated members say things would have been the same under both candidates, while 39% of Republicans believe Clinton would have been a better choice.

Those sentiments don’t necessarily mean Americans believe they made the wrong choice, only 29% of respondents say John McCain would have been a good choice for our country, while 35% still are glad they did not vote for him.

It’s always easy to look back on an election cycle and say “what it” but we still want to know what you think, would secretary of state Hillary Clinton have made a better choice for President?

Hillary Clinton went all “oh no, you did NOT” on a student yesterday while on tour in Africa.

Hillary, who has (to be fair) been living in the shadow of one of America’s greatest and most globally admired presidents, finally lost it when posed the question via a translator in the Democratic Republic of Congo yesterday. Mrs. Clinton gets this great annoyed look on her face and just snaps:

“Wait- you want me to tell you what my husband thinks? My husband is not the Secretary of State. I am.

“You ask my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I’m not going to be channelling my husband.”

Bring it, Hillary! While Clinton’s ire may have been a bit misdirected- it was later learned that the translation was faulty and the kid meant to ask what President Obama thinks on the matter- it wasn’t totally unexpected.

Remember, Clinton is probably getting a lot of this sort of thing in the wake of her husband’s very public picking up of some hot young reporters last week in North Korea- that was news worldwide. Below, watch Hillary Clinton throw down.

It is always a good idea when trying to give someone who speaks a different language a cute little gift that has a saying in their language on it that you get the translation correct. It is especially important when you are dealing with international politics and how touchy politicians can be over something said incorrectly.

However it seems that someone in the U.S. State Department forgot to double check a recently translation that was used to engrave a special little gift Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave to her Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"I would like to present you with a little gift that represents what President Obama and Vice President Biden and I have been saying and that is: ‘We want to reset our relationship and so we will do it together,’" Clinton said, presenting Lavrov with the red button.

What the foreign minister got, however, was a button that said "peregruzka," which translates into Russian as "overcharge" or "overload" (depending on the context). Oops…

"You got it wrong," Lavrov teased Clinton, but said he would put it on his desk anyway.

As Zoli Erdos suggested on his blog maybe next time instead of using a human translator they just farm it out to Google Translate

Hillary Clinton has won Senate confirmation as Secretary of State in a 94-2 vote.

Republicans David Vitter of Louisiana and Jim DeMint of South Carolina voted no.

The speedy confirmation was backed strongly by both John McCain and John Kerry, who urged Senate Colleagues to pass the confirmation, despite concerns from some Republicans about donors to Bill Clinton’s charity.

Kerry told the Senate “These are extraordinarily challenging times. We are fighting two wars, the threat of terrorism is as strong as ever, and, as the President said, we now labor under the “gathering clouds and raging storms” of the severest economic crisis of our lifetime. At such a momentous moment, it is essential that we provide the President with the tools and resources he needs to effect change—and that starts with putting a national security team in place as soon as possible. That includes confirming Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.”

President-elect Barack Obama has announced his selections for America’s top national security posts. Among them is the foreign policy adviser from his campaign, Susan Rice, who will become ambassador to the United Nations.

Susan Rice Bio

Susan Rice, perhaps the least known of the nominees, will be a full-fledged Cabinet member in her role — a shift from past administrations. Rice, 44, will be the second-youngest person to ever hold the U.N. adviser post.

Susan Rice entered government life in 1993 as a member of President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff. She eventually became assistant secretary of state for African affairs. Rice created a small stir when she decided to join Obama’s campaign rather than Hillary Clinton’s because of this past association. Now, she will be working closely with Ms. Clinton as part of the new administration.

Rice is known for her criticism of the Bush administration’s response to the Darfur killings. The Save Darfur Coalition has already expressed excitement about her appointment and how it could help reshape the region.

Susan Rice’s bio also includes a stint as senior fellow in foreign policy at independent research firm the Brookings Institution — the job she currently holds — as well as a role as senior adviser for national security affairs on the John Kerry 2004 presidential campaign. She previously worked as a management consultant for McKinsey and Company.

Good morning. Last week, we announced our economic team, which is working as we speak to craft an Economic Recovery Program to create jobs and grow our struggling economy. Today, Vice President-elect Biden and I are pleased to announce our national security team.

The national security challenges we face are just as grave — and just as urgent — as our economic crisis. We are fighting two wars. Old conflicts remain unresolved, and newly assertive powers have put strains on the international system. The spread of nuclear weapons raises the peril that the world’s deadliest technology could fall into dangerous hands. Our dependence on foreign oil empowers authoritarian governments and endangers our planet.

America must also be strong at home to be strong abroad. We need to provide education and opportunity for our citizens, so every American can compete with anyone, anywhere. And our economic power must sustain our military strength, our diplomatic leverage, and our global leadership.

The common thread linking these challenges is the fundamental reality that in the 21st century, our destiny is shared with the world’s. From our markets to our security; from our public health to our climate — we must act with the understanding that, now more than ever, we have a stake in what happens across the globe. And as we learned so painfully on 9/11, terror cannot be contained by borders, nor safety provided by oceans alone.

Last week, we were reminded of this threat once again when terrorists took the lives of six American among nearly 200 victims in Mumbai. In the world we seek, there is no place for those who kill innocent civilians to advance hateful extremism. This weekend, I told Prime Minister Singh that Americans stand with the people of India in this dark time. And I am confident that India’s great democracy is more resilient than killers who would tear it down.

And so, in this uncertain world, the time has come for a new beginning — a new dawn of American leadership to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, and to seize the opportunities embedded in those challenges. We will strengthen our capacity to defeat our enemies and support our friends. We will renew old alliances and forge new and enduring partnerships. We will show the world once more that America is relentless in defense of our people, steady in advancing our interests, and committed to the ideals that shine as a beacon to the world: democracy and justice; opportunity and unyielding hope — because American values are America’s greatest export to the world.

To succeed, we must pursue a new strategy that skillfully uses, balances, and integrates all elements of American power: our military and diplomacy; our intelligence and law enforcement; our economy and the power of our moral example. The team that we have assembled here today is uniquely suited to do just that.

In their past service and plans for the future, these men and women represent all of those elements of American power, and the very best of the American example. They have served in uniform and as diplomats; they have worked as legislators, law enforcement officials, and executives. They share my pragmatism about the use of power, and my sense of purpose about America’s role as a leader in the world.

I have known Hillary Clinton as a friend, a colleague, a source of counsel, and as a campaign opponent. She possesses an extraordinary intelligence and toughness, and a remarkable work ethic. I am proud that she will be our next Secretary of State. She is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence; who knows many of the world’s leaders; who will command respect in every capitol; and who will clearly have the ability to advance our interests around the world.

Hillary’s appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances. There is much to do — from preventing the spread of nuclear weapons to Iran and North Korea, to seeking a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, to strengthening international institutions. I have no doubt that Hillary Clinton is the right person to lead our State Department, and to work with me in tackling this ambitious foreign policy agenda.

At a time when we face an unprecedented transition amidst two wars, I have asked Robert Gates to continue as Secretary of Defense, and I’m pleased that he’s accepted. Two years ago, he took over the Pentagon at a difficult time. He restored accountability. He won the confidence of military commanders, and the trust of our brave men and women in uniform, and their families. He earned the respect of members of Congress on both sides of the aisle for his pragmatism and competence. He knows that we need a sustainable national security strategy — and that includes a bipartisan consensus at home.

As I said throughout the campaign, I will be giving Secretary Gates and our military a new mission as soon as I take office: responsibly ending the war in Iraq through a successful transition to Iraqi control. We will also ensure that we have the strategy — and resources — to succeed against al Qaeda and the Taliban. As Bob said not too long ago, Afghanistan is where the war on terror began, and it is where it must end. And going forward, we will continue to make the investments necessary to strengthen our military and increase our ground forces to defeat the threats of the 21st century.

Eric Holder has the talent and commitment to succeed as Attorney General from his first day on the job, which is even more important in a transition that demands vigilance. He has distinguished himself as a prosecutor, a Judge, and a senior official, and he is deeply familiar with the law enforcement challenges we face– from terrorism to counter-intelligence; from white collar crime to public corruption.

Eric also has the combination of toughness and independence that we need at the Justice Department. Let me be clear: the Attorney General serves the American people. And I have every expectation that Eric will protect our people, uphold the public trust, and adhere to our Constitution.

Janet Napolitano offers the experience and executive skill that we need in the next Secretary of Homeland Security. She has spent her career protecting people — as a US Attorney, an Attorney General, and as Governor of Arizona. She understands the need for a Department of Homeland Security that has the capacity to help prevent terrorist attacks and respond to catastrophe — be it manmade or natural.

Janet assumes this critical role having learned the lessons — some of them painful — of the last several years, from 9/11 to Katrina. She insists on competence and accountability. She knows firsthand the need to have a partner in Washington that works well with state and local governments. She understands as well as anyone the danger of an unsecure border. And she will be a leader who can reform a sprawling Department while safeguarding our homeland.

Susan Rice will take on the crucial task of serving as Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations. Susan has been a close and trusted advisor. As in previous Administrations, the UN Ambassador will serve as a member of my cabinet and integral member of my team. Her background as a scholar, on the National Security Council, and Assistant Secretary of State will serve our nation well at the United Nations.

Susan knows that the global challenges we face demand global institutions that work. She shares my belief that the UN is an indispensable — and imperfect — forum. She will carry the message that our commitment to multilateral action must be coupled with a commitment to reform. We need the UN to be more effective as a venue for collective action — against terror and proliferation; climate change and genocide; poverty and disease.

Finally, I am convinced that General James Jones is uniquely suited to be a strong and skilled National Security Advisor. Generations of Joneses have served heroically on the battlefield — from the beaches of Tarawa in World War II, to Foxtrot Ridge in Vietnam. Jim’s Silver Star is a proud part of that legacy. He will bring to the job the dual experience of serving in uniform and as a diplomat. He has commanded a platoon in battle, served as Supreme Allied Commander in a time of war, and worked on behalf of peace in the Middle East.

Jim is focused on the threats of today and the future. He understands the connection between energy and national security, and has worked on the frontlines of global instability – from Kosovo to northern Iraq to Afghanistan. He will advise me and work effectively to integrate our efforts across the government, so that we are effectively using all elements of American power to defeat unconventional threats and promote our values.

I am confident that this is the team that we need to make a new beginning for American national security. This morning, we met to discuss the situation in Mumbai and some of the challenges that we face in the months and years ahead. In the coming weeks, I will be in close contact with these advisors, who will be working with their counterparts in the Bush Administration to make sure that we are ready to hit the ground running on January 20. Given the range of threats that we face — and the vulnerability that can be a part of every presidential transition — I hope that we can proceed swiftly for those national security officials who demand confirmation.

We move forward with the humility that comes with knowing that there are brave men and women protecting us on the front lines. Troops serving their second, third, or fourth tours. Diplomats and intelligence officers in dangerous corners of the world. FBI agents in the field, cops on the beat, prosecutors in our courts, and cargo inspectors at our ports. These selfless Americans whose names are unknown to most of us will form the backbone of our effort. If we serve as well as they do, we will protect our country and promote our values.

And we move forward with respect for America’s tradition of a bipartisan national security policy, and a commitment to national unity. When it comes to keeping our nation and our people safe, we are not Republicans and we are not Democrats: we are Americans. There is no monopoly of power or wisdom in either party. Together, as one nation, as one people, we can shape our times instead of being shaped by them. Together, we will meet the challenges of the 21st century not with fear, but with hope.

Now, before I take questions, I’d like to invite my team to say a few words, starting with my friend Hillary Clinton. Thank you.

Hillary Clinton is reported to have said yes to an offer from President-elect Barack Obama to become the next United States Secretary of State.

Clinton flew to Chicago last last week to discuss the possibility with Obama, although New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson was also said to be in the running.

The Guardian broke the story, and said Obama’s advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton’s foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest, but Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem.

Donklephant notes that although it’s not a great path to the White House, “Biden won’t be running in 2016, so this keeps Hillary on the world stage, keeps Bill in a cage and therefore helps Obama keep everybody in check.
