Ok, so far in the 2010 NFL season three head coaches have been fired. At least seven more rest on very hot seats. I would have said eight but Jim Schwartz of the Detroit Lions deserves one more year. Of course we can now start to speculate on who will end up where. I think Jason Garrett and Leslie Frazier stay on with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings respectively. That would leave the Denver Broncos in need of a new head man currently. Of course the Houston Texans, San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, and Cincinnati Bengals all may be searching for new coaches come the off season.

Bill Cowher has alluded to the fact that he is ready to return to the NFL sidelines. I don’t think the Houston Texans are the best fit for him though. True the Texans have been treading water the last few years and have been a big disappointment so far in 2010. I think they will fire Gary Kubiak, but I also think they would rather have Jeff Fisher be their man once he finally leaves the Titans.

Of all these jobs I think Cowher is the best fit for the Carolina Panthers. He is from Carolina, and that makes it an attractive job. He would also get the chance to rebuild that team his way. He would likely get a chance to draft a new QB in next year’s draft and start a massive rebuild effort. Of course that is just my opinion on the matter.

Of all the coaches about to get fired (or sitting on a very hot seat) I think Marvin Lewis will be the most likely to get another head coaching spot (beyond Fisher who will have multiple offers the day of his eventual termination from the Titans). Where Lewis could end up his anyone’s guess, but I do not think Cowher will end up in Houston.

It is not news that there are more than a few NFL team out there that are really bad, and will be looking to make a change of their Head Coach. The St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers, Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins are the most likely teams to make a change at Head Coach when the misery of the 2009 season is over. Of course there are some big names out there; Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, and Bill Cower who are all proven head men not presently employed. While they will get the most looks there are four NFL Assistant Coaches who may be considered for these jobs.

Darrell Bevell, Offensive Coordinator, Minnesota Vikings- This is the guy who installed Bret Favre into his offense without skipping a beat. He has also done a great job of coming up with play for number one draft pick, receiver Percy Harvin. Bevell is going to get a lot of looks since he can tailor his offense to the personnel on the roster.

Brian Schottenheimer, Offensive Coordinator, New York Jets- He is very attractive because he is so young, 35, comes from good NFL family, and already has four years on the job as a coordinator. In those four years he has worked with three different QB’s and he is the man that is making Mark Sanchez look so good in his rookie season.

Greg Manusky, Defensive Coordinator, San Francisco 49ers- At 44 he is on the older side of a league that is trending younger for head coaches. However the job he has done this year with the 49er defense is nothing short of amazing. Due to that fact alone he will end up on the short list of more than one team.

Sean McDermott, Defensive Coordinator, Philadelphia Eagles- He has been groomed for a head coaching job, and has been highly regarded for quite some time. His downside is this is first year as a coordinator, but teams may be willing to overlook that fact.
