First trailer released for HBO’s The Pacific

The first trailer for HBO’s The Pacific, the follow up by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks to Band of Brothers has been released.

The Pacific focuses on the United States Marine Corps’s actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII, and cost at staggering $200 million to produce. Shot in Queensland and Victoria, the series is due out in March 2010.

First impressions: epic. The CGI is believable, the color and tone rich, and I can just see this becoming a must watch. Here’s The Pacific trailer:

Joe Buck Artie Lange video: well this is certainly different….

The first episode of Joe Buck’s new show on HBO ended on a rather different note when comedian Artie Lange decided that what he’d seen of the show so far wasn’t great.

Lange best known for his work on the Howard Stern Show, was part of a post-show segment with other comedians that streamed live online. Lange roasted Buck like there was no tomorrow, and added a pile of homophobic, sexist and crude jokes into the mix as well.

It’s had to know where to start. When Buck announced that TMZ was his favorite website, Lange replied “Joe, TMZ is your favorite website? What’s your second, suckingcock.com?” Lange also said among other things that Jessica Simpson was a Chris Farley-lookalike fat girl.

The reaction has varied from condemning Buck (most people think the show was bad before Lange appeared) to condemning Lange.

True Blood season two premieres tonight!

Anxious fangirls HBO viewers are clutching their pearls because True Blood season two is finally starting tonight.

In keeping with the sexy vibe of the show, teaser footage has become increasingly tantalizing. In the latest installment, we see Jessica’s tumultuous reunion with her conservative homeschooling family, both Bill and Eric trying to lay claim to Sookie, and Eric having a bit of a tantrum with what looks like highlight-foils in his hair. Jason gets his Fellowship of the Sun on and Maryann is clearly doing something to lead the townsfolk astray. Bill broods. Like, at everyone.

New True Blood TV spots

HBO’s hit series True Blood returns June 14, and in the lead up HBO has released some new ads with additional footage.

New details are revealed about Jessica, the new vampire who was converted by Bill in the last series. We see Maryann generating power, Jason in attack mode and Tara in shook.

The series is based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series (known as The Southern Vampire Mysteries) by Charlaine Harris. After a slow start on debut in 2008, strong word of mouth saw True Blood grow to be HBO’s most popular series since the Soprano’s and Sex and the City, and rightly so, because it’s a great show.

Mormons unhappy with HBO for depicting a Mormon Endowment Ceremony

Mormon church leaders are unhappy with HBO over plans to show a “Mormon endowment ceremony” in the drama Big Love Sunday.

Mormon church leaders said that the episode showed a clear indication of HBO’s insensitivity toward the church’s sacred practices. Members who are privy to such rituals take vows that the details of their activities outside the temple shall not be shared.

“Certainly church members are offended when their most sacred practices are misrepresented or presented without context or understanding,” a church statement said.

HBO said it did not intend to be disrespectful of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and apologized.

“Obviously, it was not our intention to do anything disrespectful to the church, but to those who may be offended, we offer our sincere apology,” a statement from HBO said, however the network would not be pulling the episode.

Mormon endowment ceremonies are held in Mormon temples for baptisms of the living and the dead. Mormon Apostle Bruce McConkie explained the endowment ceremony as “certain special, spiritual blessings given worthy and faithful saints in the temples…because in and through them the recipients are endowed with power from on high” (Mormon Doctrine, pg. 226-227).

YouTube star Michael Buckley signed by HBO

Michael Buckley, the host of popular YouTube show “What the Buck?” has signed a deal with HBO.

For those not familiar with the show, Buck delivers a regular dose of celebrity gossip and opinion in a highly energized fashion. The show is an acquired taste, but that hasn’t stopped 250-500,000 people watching every episode.

According to NewTeeVee, Buckley’s deal with HBO doesn’t include the show, but will instead see Buckley developing original content for the network, both online and for television.

The track record of internet stars crossing over to the mainstream has a checkered success rate, but the signing alone still demonstrates that the internet can still be used as a gateway to mainstream opportunities.

HBO Considers Subscription-Free Access

NBC may be out, but it now looks like HBO could be in when it comes to show sales on iTunes.

Portfolio.com quotes HBO insiders as saying the network is “close to announcing a deal” to offer its programs for individual download on the service. Interestingly, the insiders say HBO negotiated better terms than any other current content providers.

The move would open the closely-guarded gates to HBO programming and let non-subscribers get immediate access to hits like Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Currently, HBO offers online access only to people who are already paying for their television-based service.

Providing on-demand access without a subscription strikes me as a smart and long overdue move. Plenty of people don’t want to pay the monthly fee for channels they largely won’t watch, but buying a one-time episode of a quality show is a much less daunting investment. I’m just surprised it’s taken them this long to catch up with the world and come up with this plan.

The deal could also fill the gap left by NBC pulling its programs from iTunes last year. The peacock network moved its goods over to Microsoft’s Zune service instead, as reported on The Inquisitr earlier this month.
