Fans attending this year’s Pro Bowl in Hawaii actively booed their favorite NFL players for what they saw as a lackluster attempt at performing in the league’s All Star game and those fans were’t the only disapproving spectators, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell talked with ESPN Radio on Sunday and revealed that the game could be eliminated.

Talking on Mike and Mike in the Morning Goodell said he has already began addressing the “quality of the game” with the NFL Players association:

“I really didn’t think that was the kind of football that we want to be demonstrating for our fans,” Goodell said. “And you heard it from the fans. The fans were actively booing in the stands. They didn’t like what they were seeing.”

The NFL Commissioner also said if the game continues to be played something needs to change immediately:

“We’re either going to have to improve the quality of what we’re doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes or even considering eliminating the game if that’s the kind of quality game we’re going to provide,” Goodell said.

Goodell admitted that fans weren’t given what was promised to them:

“I know players love to be in Hawaii but we have to start with the quality of what we’re doing,” Goodell said. “If the fans are responding negatively to what we’re doing, we better listen. And that was my message.”

That sentiment appears to be shared by at least some players, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers recently called his NFC teams performance “embarrassing” while admitting that his teammates “didn’t put any effort into it.”

The NFL Pro Bowl is often played with youthful abandon by players lucky enough to be chosen for the trip to Hawaii, however one player didn’t get that memo this year. Brandon Marshall appeared to be playing at double speed compared to his fellow NFL all-stars on Sunday when he caught four touchdowns, a new Pro Bowl Record.

All together the Miami Dolphins wide receiver caught six passes for 176 years as his AFC teammates used the second-half to pull ahead of the NFC for a 59-41 win on Sunday.

After the game Marshall said:

“You never know when you’re going to be back and I wanted to go all out today because it could be my last Pro Bowl.”

Adding to his impressive full game span Marshall managed one touch per quarter, enough to get him selected as the Pro Bowl MVP.

After the game Brandon Marshall made it clear that he had a mission:

“You know what? I wanted it,” he said. “It’s a Pro Bowl. Some guys are playing 100 (percent), some guys are playing 90, some guys aren’t playing at all, but it means a lot to be up in the rafters with some of these guys.”

Marshall’s four TD’s wasn’t the only broken Pro Bowl record, the AFC set a new mark with 59 points.

It was Marshall’s third Pro Bowl appearance and the Hawaii weather and Aloha Stadium has always been a favorite of Marshalls, it was at the same stadium in 2005 where he earned MVP honors in his final game for Central Florida, the 2005 Hawaii Bowl. During that game he caught 11 passes for 210 yards including three touchdowns.

Joking about his season Marshall pointed out that he had just six TDs this past season but four in the Pro Bowl.

Residents and people vacationing in Hawaii on Sunday felt the effects of a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that rattled the area about 4 miles south of the active Pu’u O’o crater on the  Kilauea volcano’s east rift zone.

According to reports the hypcentral depth was approximately 5 miles deep and there is no threat of a tsunami. No report damage was reported at the time of the earthquake.

According to reports a set of smaller quakes were reported within 10 minutes of the first quake and in the the same vicinity following the first and were measured at a magnitude of 3.0.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense released the following statement following the earthquake:

This is a Civil Defense Message. This is an earthquake informational update for Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 at 5PM HST. The earthquake which occurred at approximately 4:38PM was not large enough to cause a tsunami for the Island or state of Hawaii. Preliminary data indicates that the earthquake measured 5.0 and was centered in the vicinity of Kaena Point, Puna. As in all earthquakes, be aware of the possibilities of after shocks. If the earthquake was strongly felt in your area, precautionary checks should be made for any damages, especially to utility connections of gas, water, and power. Again, the earthqauke which occurred at approximately 4:38PM measured 5.0 and was not strong enough to cause a tsunami for the Island or State of Hawaii. Thank you.

According to he Hawaiian Volcano Observatory two small collapses occurred at the West Ka’ili’ili lava delta. The observatory noted:

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) recorded a magnitude 4.7 earthquake located beneath Kilauea volcano’s south flank on Sunday, January 22, 2012, at 4:36 p.m. HST. This earthquake was centered near Holei Pali about 7 km (4 mi) south of the Pu‘u ‘O‘o crater and 15 km (9 mi) west of Kalapana, at a depth of 8 km (5 mi).

There have been 20 official aftershocks following the larger quake.

The Hawaiian monk seal is listed as a critically endangered species and now their population has shrunk further after three, maybe four of the seals have been killed in Hawaii in the past two months.

Wildlife authorities are not sure who is killing the seals or why they have chosen to target the endangered species. In the meantime federal government agencies have stepped up their protection efforts for the species.

According to the Associated Press:

The killings are also happening as the misguided notion spreads that the animals aren’t native to Hawaii and don’t belong here.

According to local residents because of negative sentiments felt for the monk seals by local fisherman their has been a lack of concern over the species and their endangered listing.

Fisherman in the region strongly believe that the seals are not native to the region while noting that new regulations against fishing in the area will hurt their business.

Additionally, Obama is worried about new sanctions that the bill mandates on Iran”s Central Bank.  The sanctions were included to punish Iran for its continued drive to develop a nuclear weapon.  Obama is worried that if implemented quickly or harshly the sanctions will cause a spike in world oil prices and cause disastrous hardship on US allies who import oil from Iran.

Obama had originally threatened to veto the bill due to the way it treated American citizens suspected of terrorist involvement.  The original bill contained a provision which would have allowed the government to hold US citizens accused of terrorist activity indefinitely, without trial.  The current bill got rid of that section.

In addition the original bill took away the right of the government to use civilian courts to try members of Al-Queda or associated groups.  The current bill allows the Executive branch the right to use a civilian court if they justify to Congress that National Security is at risk by using a military tribunal.

The bill’s sanctions on Iran are to be implemented over the course of the next six months.  Iran’s military has already declared that they would consider the bill’s signing to be an act of war.  They threatened to shut down the Straight of Hormmuz, a waterway through which 1/6th of the world’s oil travels through.  Since then Iran has backed off the statement, stating that they have have other “unspecified” ways of retaliating.

The bill’s price tag stands at $664 Billion dollars and authorizes the purchase of weapons systems, pay for service members, national security programs and other similar projects.

American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez is in the midst of a divorce from Latin crooner Marc Anthony, but the singer/dancer and former fly girl didn’t have to spend Thanksgiving alone.

Multiple reports say Lopez kept time on the family day with new beau, backup dancer Casper Smart. Several sources place 42-year-old Lopez and 24-year-old Smart on the island of Kauai with three-year-old twins Max and Emme, as well as “several” of Lopez’s family members. An unidentified source blabbed to tabloid Us Weekly about Smart and Lopez’s rendezvous:

“Casper was great with the kids. He was twirling them around and doing flips with Emme and she seemed very comfortable with him,” a source tells Us. “Jennifer got a chance to sit back and relax while Casper took over and played.”

Lopez and Smart have been a rumored item for some weeks now, putting paid to scuttlebutt that Lopez was struggling with the divorce after she became emotional on-stage at concert during a number that made reference to the singer’s former flames. But gossip outlets have also seized on news that Smart may be facing some legal problems that could land him in jail:

The Los Angeles-based dancer, real name Beau Paul Smart, has racked up a number of speeding and traffic-related charges, including speeding greater than 100 miles per hour and illegal drag racing, according to police records… He was also charged with driving without a valid license in 2004, 2006 and 2007, evading electronic toll charges in 2005 and exceeding maximum speeds of 65 miles per hour in 2004 and 2005…

Lopez has yet to comment on the relationship publicly.

A fiery tour helicopter crash on Molokai in Hawaii today killed five, but officials are not yet sure what caused the collision.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the deadly accident, as officials work to identify the dead and notify their next of kin. At least two of the victims aboard the helicopter are said to have been newlyweds. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, a company that arranges tours of all major Hawaiian islands, owned the ill-fated copter and back in 2000, another Blue Hawaiian Helicopters chopper crashed on a similar tour, killing seven. A spokeswoman for the company says they are “puzzled” at to what may have caused the accident.

Maui police indicate that the crash occurred during a one hour tour of West Maui and Molokai, and that the copter crashed into a mountain ridge in East Molokai. The collision occurred just above Kilohana Elementary School, and principal Richard Stevens commented on the incident:

“We did hear what a lot of us thought was thunder. Our health aide however was actually watching while all of this happened. She came down and said, ‘Richard you got to know this, you got to know this – a helicopter just crashed into the mountain and you can see the smoke.”

One ID has been made public thusfar, that of 30-year-old pilot Nathan Cline of Kihei. Officials say that four bodies were found in the copter, and one was located underneath the wreckage. Maui County Spokesperson Rod Antone commented:

“We just want to say that our hearts go out to the families of the passengers and of the pilot.”

According to MSNBC the 10 masseuses practice the massage weekly to ensure there are no embarrassing collisions or strange feelings during the massage but at $20 per finger it’s not for anyone looking to save money.

Speaking about their luxury offering the resort’s assistant spa director says:

“We were just throwing ideas around and were trying to come up with something fun and over-the-top.”

She says the effects of 100 fingers on the body created a “hula wave” effect which ultimately “tricks the brain into totally relaxing” since you can’t focus on where you’re being touched.

It should be noted that no customers have purchased the expensive massage at this point, although employees have been treated to the experience as workers continue to hone their new 20-hand massage.

Snakes are a common occurrence in many parts of the world, however Hawaii has remained mostly snake free for years by not allowing the creatures to be held as pets or used for other purposes and now the discovery of several pet snakes on the island have officials worried about the states fragile ecosystem.

Scientists are worried that snakes being introduced into Hawaii’s ecosystem could wipe out rare plants, tropical birds and other parts of the states ecosystem which affects not only the land but also the areas tourist business.

One big concern is the country of Guam which was overrun by brown tree snakes following World War II, officials are worried that that the snakes could sneak their way into cargo ships and begin to multiply quickly in Hawaii where they have no natural predator.

Speaking to BusinessWeek, Earl Campbell, assistant field supervisor for the Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office said:

“It has a high potential to be devastating to Hawaii,”  while adding,  ”I would look at Guam as the template for what could happen in a range of tropical Pacific Islands that have no snakes.”

In order to keep snakes out of the area the state has put into place fines of $200,000 with a prison sentence up to three years. Current snake owners who turn over their pets will be given amnesty for all fees and possible prison sentences.

A second strong earthquake has hit Japan, this time in a totally different location than the earlier 8.9 magnitude quake that was followed by deadly tsunamis.

The 6.6 magnitude quake was felt in Tokyo, but no initial reports of damage, injury or death have surfaced. The seismic activity was centered northwest of Toyko. Local news sources describe the pre-dawn quake’s precise location:

The [Japan Meteorological Agency] did not issue a tsunami warning. The 3:59 a.m. quake hit areas including Niigata Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, which is far from the Pacific coastal area jolted by a magnitude 8.8 quake the previous day.

The BBC was quoted as reporting that dozens of aftershocks have rocked Japan since the massive earthquake hit several hours ago, but the 6.6 quake later in the day was in an entirely different spot. David Applegate, a senior science advisor with the USGS, says the first quake was the strongest to hit Japan in over 1,200 years.

The death toll for the 8.9 magnitude quake is at around 300, but is expected to rise when damage can be fully assessed in daylight hours.

Details are scant right now, but it appears the death toll from the earlier devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunamis in Japan has risen sharply with the discovery of 200 to 300 bodies on a beach in Sendai.

Prior to the reported discovery reported by police, death tolls officially hovered in the 50-60 range, with a similar amount of people reported missing. The bodies were believed to have been discovered by Miyagi Police in the Wakabayashi Ward in the city of Sendai:

The police believe the bodies are those of residents who were hit by a tsunami after the strongest recorded earthquake to hit Japan rocked the northeast of the country including the prefecture.

All households in the area are believed to have been affected by the tsunami. Reports indicate the airport has also been “flooded badly.”

Spokesman for the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management John M. Cummings III cautioned Hawaiians that the tsunami warning in the wake of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunamis in Japan is “very, very serious” and warned that people located “in the shoreline areas” need to “get out now.”

Tsunami warnings have been sounding since 10 pm local time last night, and continue to occur hourly, with waves of six feet predicted in some areas. The west coast of the US is also under tsunami watch, including coastal areas in California and Washington. Chip McCreary, of the the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, spoke to press about the dangers:

“These are not like surf waves,” he said. “These waves effectively wrap around islands, so all coasts will be affected.”

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also cautioned those in affected areas that “urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property. Tsunami waves effectively wrap around islands. All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face.”

Mother Nature is really incredible and nowhere is her power more apparent than when the very earth below us erupts with massive and incredibly destructive power that can be seen with every erupting volcano.

Now some folks might think going into a live volcano is the height of a great holiday but I am more than content to be on the other side of one that decides to display its power. Thankfully though with folks like those at the US Geological Survey I don’t have to miss out on seeing volcanoes like Mount Kilauea in Hawaii strut its stuff.

Throughout January and February, it’s been grumbling loudly and crater walls have been collapsing. Cascading lava was captured on February 17 at the Puu Oo crater and on 3 March, a dramatic collapse at Halema’uma’u shows part of the vent wall falling into the lava lake. Erupting fissures were filmed in early March, sending lava up to 10 metres into the air.

According to US Geological Survey (USGS), a lake of lava about 200 metres deep has formed inside one of the craters, while seismic activity in the area remains high. New reports estimate that 150 detectable earthquakes have been caused by the eruption, although so far it poses no threat to locals

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of 50-year-old television producer Aron Abrams, whose body was found early Saturday at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel in Waikoloa.

Abrams was known for his work on Everybody Hates Chris, 3rd Rock From the Sun, and Grounded For Life. He was also a consulting producer on the popular animated shows King of the Hill and Glenn Martin, DDS. Abrams was vacationing with his wife at the Fairmont Orchid Resort when he died, and police were called just before 8 a.m. on Saturday to a report of a body at the hotel.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, and police say that there are no indications of foul play.

“We’re going to wait for the autopsy results before we draw any conclusions,” Lt. Gerald Wike of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section said Tuesday.

Information regarding funeral or memorial services was not yet made available. It has been speculated that Abrams’ cause of death may have been a heart attack.

Former New England Patriots running back Mosi Tatupu died Tuesday at the age of 54.

Tatupu, father of Seahawks Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu, had reportedly been “dealing with high blood pressure,” but no cause of death has yet been established. A friend spoke briefly to the Honolulu Star Record about Tatupu’s death:

“He had some health issues,” said Barry Markowitz, a family friend who was told of the death by Tatupu’s ex-wife, Linnea.

Tatupu played 13 seasons for the Patriots, and was named as a special teamer in the 1986 Pro Bowl. Tatupu also played in Super Bowl XX in 1986, where the Patriots saw a 46-10 loss to the Chicago Bears. When Tatupu retired in 1991 after five games with St. Louis, he held the career record for most games as a running back at 199.

At the time of his death, Tatupu was a coach for running backs at Curry College in Waltham, Massachusetts. A service is being planned by his family in his native state of Hawaii.

Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser the USS Port Royal has run aground off Hawaii.

The ship hit sand approximately half mile off one of Honolulu International Airport’s main runways Thursday evening.

Navy tug boats tried to get the ship off the sand Friday morning, but were unsuccessful.

The last of the Ticonderoga-class, the USS Port Royal cost $1 billion to build, and has a crew of 360. The ship is permanently stationed in Hawaii. The Port Royal was last in the news January 2008 when it was the center of an international incident in the Gulf, when Iranian boats came at it, and the USS Hopper.

Hawaii is famous for many things, and one of those things is the traditional Lei, the traditional Hawaiian floral garland placed around the neck.

You’d think therefore that the Lei being a Hawaiian thing that Lei’s would be sustained by a ready supply of local flowers, but you’d be wrong.

Most Hawaiian Leis are made from imported flowers from Thailand, and presuming you haven’t been living in a cave, you know what’s going on there at the moment.

The flowers used for Lei’s are in short supply because of the shutdown of Bangkok’s international airport by anti-government protesters, according to reports. Lei shop owners say they are substituting other flowers when they can and not filling some orders.

The good news is that the shortage of Thai flowers isn’t affecting the price of Lei’s yet, but only due to a seasonal lull in tourist traffic. If the issues in Thailand continue, the cost of Lei’s may go through the roof in the new year, presuming Lei makes can find any.

Remember the next time you go to Hawaii: you may joke that most things you buy are Made in China, but apparently Hawaiian tradition is manufactured in Thailand.
