KTXL-TV in Sacramento is reporting in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record, Cathy Matthews and about 106 other people were able to compile 1,001,291 comments to a single Facebook post.

Matthews and her friends have gone through all the proper channels over at Guinness to ensure that indeed a record was broken and that they will be acknowledged as the new record holders.

The original record holder, which was written on the wall of a Facebook group called “Ffgpioneers/gwr/attempt” on October 30, 2011, did not originally garner over 1,000,000 posts but has had plenty of posts added since it was recorded as the official record.

The most recent post is shown below,

With slightly more than 100 people participating, each person had to comment on the post an average of about 9,300 times.

Funny enough the record was aided by the new commenting feature. It used to be that you had to hit “comment” and then press a button for it to show on Facebook. Now you can just click on the box with the mouse type and hit enter.

“The most comments on a single Facebook item” record currently stands at 529,335, according to Guinness World Records. That record, held by Roberto Esposito, was set on June 29, 2011. Zynga, the company behind Frontierville, holds several Guinness World Records itself. Not only is it “the most popular Facebook games developer,” but its “Cityville” was named “the most popular game on Facebook” in 2010.

It is very interesting that this is the new face of record setting. It used to be that some moron would have to grow his fingernails out by five feet in order to win a world record. Now all it takes it some determination, a computer screen and a strong cup of coffee.

Do you think a million Facebook posts is a big deal?

Betty Lou Sweeney, a 71-year old Wisconsin native, broke the Guinness World Record for holding the abdominal plank with a time of 36 minutes and 58 seconds. The previous world record was 33 minutes and 40 seconds.

Betty Lou was joined by her trainer, Dave Candra from Anytime Fitness, and cheered on by her husband Tom as she took on the challenge.

For Betty Lou, the accomplishment capped off an amazing two-year journey. She was severely overweight in 2009 and almost died from complications from an infection that went septic and shut down her kidneys. After defying the odds and surviving, she pledged to make a major life change and start enjoying life.

Working out six days a week with a personal trainer, Betty Lou is now medication-free, 100 pounds lighter and a world record holder.

Betty Lou, in doing the once-impossible for her situation, said:

“I had never imagined being able to work out every day, let alone break a world record for planking — I did not even know what planking was. I can’t imagine now what my life would be like had I not walked in the door at Anytime Fitness and made a commitment to get healthy.”

Do not mistake her feat for the planking that we are accustomed now. What she did was abdominal planking. What we are to used to seeing now is simply called planking or lying face down. By the way, is there a world record for that one?

DJDC will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest club DJ set ever performed.

The attempt will take place on October 2, 2011 at Downtown Santa Ana, California’s historic Yost Theater. DJDC plans to grab the world title and perform for over 150 hours with only a five-minute break per hour set. The current record is being held by DJ King at 120 hours and 19 minutes. You can watch the record-breaking attempt live at worldrecorddj.com.

DJDC, born Rene Brunner, actually performed a 121-hour set in September 2010 but the time was not recorded by Guinness and therefore is not the current official world record.

DJDC began spinning at age 11 in Austria. By age 19, DJDC was already spinning at top clubs including Empire Club, Austria’s largest and most premiere nightclub.

Chicago-based chocolatiers at World’s Finest Chocolate just landed the company a new Guinness World Record with this beast of a chocolate bar. Yet the creation of this 12,000-pound behemoth is not about gluttony – it’s about teaching kids about eating healthily.

This cocoa-based slab is currently being wheeled around a tour of schools, apparently as an example of ‘portion distortion.’ That’s right, folks. This is a lesson in dietary moderation.

The bar measures just over 3 feet wide and 21 feet long, and could provide 209,000 1-ounce servings – apparently that’s enough for every fan in Chicago’s Wrigley Field, U.S. Cellular Field, Soldier Field and the United Center, with 45,000 leftovers spare.

Every time there’s a new size-/speed-/weight-based world record, it’s customary to splurge your press release with vital statistics. World’s Finest Chocolate has not let us down. Crucially, we now know that this chocolate monolith weighs as much as:

120,000 Hershey bars
24,500 Big Macs
8,000 boxes of a dozen Krispy Kreme glazed donuts
51 Arnold Schwarzeneggers

If you fancy attempting to beat this, here’s what you’ll need:

1,200 pounds of almonds
5,500 pounds of sugar
2,000 pounds of milk powder
1,700 pounds of cocoa butter
1,400 pounds of chocolate liquor

“We’re committed to educating families about eating right and staying active and doing it in a fun and engaging way,” said Eddie Opler, World’s Finest Chocolate CEO. “NOMNOMNOM!” he didn’t add, but totally should have.

Anyway, here are more pics. And remember kids, try not to eat your next 12,000-pound candy bar in one go. Or something.

Sometimes you need to be crowned the world’s heaviest living woman before you can make the decision to lose weight. That’s the case with Pauline Potter, who was just crowned by the Guinness Book or World Records as the heaviest woman alive.

Potter says that the title is a “little degrading,” but that she decided to accept the award in order to get help. Potter says that she is hoping that a nutritionist or doctor will reach out to help her after reading her story in the new edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Potter told People Magazine:

“I don’t like people to think bad of me, but I’m willing to risk that to get the help. I have a lot of love to give, and I want to be able to help others, but I need a little help right now.”

Potter was awarded the “world’s heaviest living woman” title by Guinness in February, when she weighed in at 643 lbs. Potter says that she is probably closer to 700 lbs today.

Potter, who refers to herself as a compulsive eater, says that the Guinness record made her realized that it’s time to do something about her weight.

Potter said:

”I can’t let it go anymore. I have let my weight hold me back on so many things. I let it hurt me.”

Potter says that her weight has kept her from earning her nursing degree, which she still hopes to get. Her weight has also kept her from enjoying simple things in life, like riding a bike with her son and dancing.

“Everything people take for granted… those are the things I dream of. I’m not living. I want more.”

I hope Potter can lose enough weight so that she can enjoy all of those simple pleasures that we take advantage of, but something really bothers me about her story. Potter is waiting for someone to help her. She says that she hopes her story inspires some doctor to reach out to her. She’ll always be the world’s heaviest living woman if she expects someone else to do lose weight for her. Or is that a little insensitive?

But at least Potter wants to lose weight. Donna Simpson, on the other hand, is trying to become the world’s heaviest person.

85-year-old John Bates has just entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the best ever player of the bowling game in Nintendo’s Wii Sports.

Bates has bowled around 2,850 perfect games in the title, which is around 2,850 more perfect games than me. Furthermore, this retired high school principal from Onalaska can do it with either hand.

Bates achieved this feat between April 2009 and October 2010, which is when a friend called in Guinness to verify his achievements. And yes, he bowls for real as well. Mr Bates, sir, my hat is decidedly tipped to you.

Mozilla engineers got the news from the Guinness Book of World Records today. With 8,002,530 downloads of Firefox 3 on June 17, the company now holds the title of “largest number of software downloads in 24 hours.”

You can download and print a certificate of participation at the Spread Firefox site. Put it up on the fridge and send a copy to your mom. Hey, at least it’s something good for a change — slacker.
