Mitt Romney said this week that he’s “not concerned about the very poor” and now the GOP presidential hopeful is attempting to backpedal his statement.

In an interview with a Nevada reporter Romney said:

“It was a misstatement. I’ve said something that is similar to that but quite acceptable for a long time.”

For the record Romney’s “acceptable” comment from the past appears to be that he doesn’t care just about the rich but also the middle class, which in reality doesn’t change the shocking statement he chose to make about the “very poor.”

He then stated:

“When you do I don’t know how many thousands of interviews now and then you may get it wrong. And I misspoke. Plain and simple.”

The full Romney interview will air on Face to Face with Jon Ralston.

Here’s a video highlighting what occurred in the aftermath of his original comment. Note that Romney once again states that he’s not concerned about the “Very Poor” because they have a safety net. He doesn’t seem to understand that his statement once against shows that he isn’t concerned with the “very poor.”

Ironically Romney states “no doubt we will hear from the Democrat party about the plight of the poor” almost as if to say “I’m not worried about the poor, the Democrats will take care of them.”

If Romney wants to dig himself any deeper he should continue to talk about class support in the United States because he really doesn’t seem to understand the plight of anyone who makes less than a million dollars per year.

Do you think Romney’s statement and his lack of clarifying his remarks will hurt his chance against President Obama should he win the GOP primary?

As the election season continues to heat up with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich launching various attacks against one another it turns out that many of their ads are ending up on the Weather Channel and Food Network, the cable stations of choice for Republicans according to a recent study.

First reported in the New York Times the study has found that those networks along with HGTV and the History Channel are watched regularly by 36% of GOP voters in the state of Florida.

The shift to unconventional market viewership has led political leaders to more readily target those channels.

As Mitt Romney’s media strategic points out:

“You need to have your ads more spread out into other programming so you’re not just lumped into the political segment of a commercial break.”

Interestingly enough Romney’s campaign has also found that their key demographics for voting purposes tend to like the shows CSI, The Mentalist, and Criminal Minds all of which have received special consideration on behalf of the Mitt Romney GOP presidential primary campaign.

The reasoning for the right leaning tendencies of those networks? One suggestions is that they tend to air in “HDTV which attracts small-business owners who usually lean right.”

I disagree with that last point because everything airs in HDTV these days.

Why do you think Republicans love the Weather Channel so much?

During the last several weeks GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has spent a majority of time bashing Mitt Romney for his ties to Wall Street special interests and his low federal tax payments but now Gingrich says he is willing to back Romney should he win the GOP primary.

Speaking on Good Morning America this morning Gingrich says of Romney:

“I think re-electing Obama is a disaster and I’ll certainly endorse the Republican nominee.”

Even as he offered his support should that time come he essentially called Romney just another Obama:

“But I think that Mitt Romney will have a very, very hard time differentiating himself [from Obama].”

The news that Gingrich would back Mitt Romney comes just days ahead of the Florida primary and at a time when he is shown to be trailing Romney in pretty much every single political poll collected in the state.

While Gingrich said he would throw his support behind Romney he also added:

”We nominated a moderate in 1996, he got beaten badly. We nominated a moderate in 2008, he got beaten badly. I know that the establishment would love to nominate Romney and they want to make him electable so they can beat [Obama] in the fall. But I think the record of ’96 and 2008 is you better have a conservative who can draw a really wide gap.”

Essentially Gingrich was quick to show his support for keeping the GOP united while at the same time still offering enough of a reason for his base to continue their support of his efforts.

Do you think Newt Gingrich’s comment coming at this juncture in the GOP primary shows the realization of defeat in his camp or sound judgement based on a real possibility?

Isabella Santorum, the three-year-old daughter of GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum, has been hospitalized, prompting her father to remove himself from the campaign trail to be at her side.

The Republican presidential hopeful called off his campaign events for Sunday morning, after Isabella was admitted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on Saturday night.

Isabella suffers from Trisomy 18, a genetic condition caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 18th chromosome. Santorum has previously revealed his daughter was not expected to survive until her first birthday. Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said:

“Rick intends to return to Florida and resume the campaign schedule as soon as is possible.”

As well as attending church in Miami, Santorum was booked in to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” His Sunday afternoon events, due to be staged in Sarasota and Punta Gorda, will proceed as expected.

Earlier this year, just before a late surge in the polls saw him come agonisingly close to victory in Iowa, Santorum discussed his daughter and her condition. He said:

“I don’t know whether [Isabella's] life is going to be measured — it’s always been measured — in days and weeks. Yet here I am. [...] I feel like I wouldn’t be a good dad if I wasn’t out here fighting for a country that would see the dignity in her and every other child.”

Isabella has made a brief appearance on Santorum’s campaign trail – she was photographed with her father at Iowa’s straw poll in August (above) – but mostly she stays home with her mother.

Here’s wishing little Isabella a speedy and safe recovery!

The field of GOP candidates that remain edging up to the election in November is problematic for Republicans to say the least, even if they did get a shot in the arm of enthusiasm after Mitch Daniels’ post-State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

Actually, Mitch Daniels opted early in the race not to seek the nomination. Since then, Republicans have contended with know-nothing options like Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain, all of whom have since exited the fray. What remains- controversial candidates Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich- is a less than ideal situation for the Republican base.

Santorum is a bit fringey, espousing some very conservative ideals that might not appeal to a wide range of moderate Republicans. Romney has kind of emerged as an uber-villain, drawing ire even among fellow Republicans for being a “vulture capitalist” and all-around difficult to like guy. And then there is Gingrich, a sometimes self-styled moral crusader who has certainly wife-hopped and perhaps tried to cajole his second wife into an open marriage, which is a very progressive-scented idea.

Mitch Daniels and his impassioned rebuttal to the State of the Union, calling on Obama to cut spending and reduce debt appealed to Republicans seeking a more reasoned voice for the party, and even went so far as to suggest that the GOP vision for the middle class is more fair than the alternatives- calling Obama’s administration “bossy.” After the speech, conservative writer Charles Krauthammer went on Fox to lament the contrast between Daniels and the current field of GOP candidates:

“I could hear sighs all over the country from Republicans [about] what might have been. That was one of the best speeches I’ve heard … and I think it was one of the best presentations of the conservative idea against the larger government of Obama.”

Do you think the GOP has already lost the election after choosing Romney and Santorum over a candidate like Mitch Daniels?

After President Obama spent most of his hour long State of the Union Address talking about fixing the economy for the future GOP Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels chimed in with the GOP response to President Obama’s message, calling the President “pro-poverty” and claiming that his State of the Union Message was too upbeat while saying:

“When President Obama claims that the state of our union is anything but grave, he must know in his heart that this is not true.”

At the heart of Mitch Daniels response he says the President has done everything in his power to hurt the economy and stifle job creation:

“The extremism that stifles the development of homegrown energy, or cancels a perfectly safe pipeline that would employ tens of thousands, or jacks up consumer utility bills for no improvement in either human health or world temperature, is a pro-poverty policy. It must be replaced by a passionate pro-growth approach that breaks all ties and calls all close ones in favor of private sector jobs that restore opportunity for all and generate the public revenues to pay our bills.”

Daniels then goes on to explain how the GOP would fix all of the nation’s problems through taxation policies and less control over regulations:

“That means a dramatically simpler tax system of fewer loopholes and lower rates. A pause in the mindless piling on of expensive new regulations that devour dollars that otherwise could be used to hire somebody. It means maximizing on the new domestic energy technologies that are the best break our economy has gotten in years.”

Daniels then comments on the state of partisan support in the United States, claiming that President Obama has acted to divide Republicans and Democrats:

“No feature of the Obama presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others.”

Pulling a message from the President Obama’s own playbook after trillions of dollars was wasted under the Bush administration Mitch Daniels added:

“In three short years, an unprecedented explosion of spending, with borrowed money, has added trillions to an already unaffordable national debt. And yet, the president has put us on a course to make it radically worse in the years ahead.”

Here’s the full State of the Union Address response from GOP Governor Mitch Daniels:

After a grueling few weeks on the GOP campaign trail funnyman Stephen Colbert has thrown in the towel, announcing on Monday that he was dropping out to focus on being funny.

In his message to supporters, namely his Comedy Central views and perhaps a few disgruntled GOP members given the choices left to them he announced:

“My fellow Americans of South Carolina: While your turnout on Saturday was historic, unfortunately–and no one could have predicted this–Herman Cain did not win the South Carolina primary.”

He then added:

“So it is with a heavy heart and a spastic colon, that I am re-suspending Herman Cain’s suspended campaign.”

You might recall that Stephen Colbert had failed to get his name on the South Carolina ballot after missing the November filing and a write-in is not allowed under state election laws. After realizing he couldn’t receive votes Colbert urged his supporters to vote for Tea Party member Herman Cain instead.

Colbert went so far as to have his Super PAC, which he handed over to Jon Stewart for legal reasons, run an ad that called Mitt Romney a serial killer, here’s the ad:

In the end he left his supporters with the following message:

“So now that my exploration has come to an end, who knows what I’m going to do. Maybe I’ll be like Herman Cain and hit the road in a bus with my face on it,” Colbert said. “Maybe I’ll hit the road in a bunch of tiny cars, each with a different part of my face on it.”

It looks like Stephen Colbert won’t be the President of the United States of South Carolina or any other state after all…sad day

GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney released his tax returns following the first of two GOP debates in Florida and as suspected his tax rate is lower than that of many poor and middle class Americans.

In 2011 Mitt Romney collected $20.9 million in income and in 2010 that number was higher at $21.7 million, however because all of those profits were paid in dividends and interest from investments Romney wasn’t charged any wages. That mean his estimated tax payment of $3.2 million in 2011 is just 15.4% while his $3 million payment in 2010 was just 13.9%, that would be a lower tax bracket them a poverty earning American making $15,000 in the same time period.

The Romney family did manage to be slightly more generous with their money when it came to charities, giving away $7 million of which $4.1 million was paid to the Mormon church.

During the Florida debate Romney repeated that his tax bill is “entirely legal and fair” while adding “I’m proud of the fact that I pay a lot of taxes.”

In actuality he paid far less in taxes then even Newt Gingrich who’s recently tax return shows almost $1 million paid on just over $3 million earned (more than 30% paid).

Joking during the debate about Romney’s tax payments Newt Gingrich said he would love to bring Americans’ tax rate “down” to Romney’s level. At the same time Mitt Romney points out that Gingrich supports a 0% tax on capital gains which would have left Romney paying “no taxes”

It should be noted that Mitt Romney only released his 550 pages of tax documents for his three family trusts and his foundation after coming under fire regarding his $250 million fortune.

With such a small percentage of his gross earnings afforded to taxes it’s likely the trouncing he felt in South Carolina will continue if he doesn’t come up with a better stance then being “proud” about his “legal payments” when many American’s and even some of the countries most wealthy citizens are asking for higher taxes on the rich.

In the meantime Romney has attempted to shift the focus away from his low tax bracket by noting that Newt Gingrich’s consulting firm accepted $1.8 million from Freddie Mac ahead of the 2008 housing collapse. Gingrich has repeatedly claims that none of that money was used for lobbying purposes. One thing is for certain, at least Newt paid more than 30% of those earnings into taxes, Romney would have pocketed an extra $200,000 had he been the one consulting the company.

In the meantime I just wish I can one day collect $20 million and claim it as non-wages. Are you appalled with Mitt Romney’s low tax bracket on millions of dollars earned?

Lest you think Warren Buffett is a self-hating Richie Rich, the sympathetic billionaire- who has long decried that he himself pays a far lower tax rate than many of his employees- has actually stepped in to defend the often-seemingly-indefensible Mitt Romney.

Buffett has not been shy in criticizing many in his cohort that enjoy a lower tax rate- the difference essentially boils down to whether you make money with your skills or labor, or whether your money makes money. If you yourself make the money, you pay a higher tax rate. Income from investments is taxed a bit lower, and Romney has come in for hotter heat when the topic of loopholes like offshore tax shelters are discussed.

But, Buffett says, don’t hate the player- hate the game. He sat down with Bloomberg earlier this week to talk about tax issues and Mitt Romney after Mittens was excoriated in the press for not wanting to release his enviable tax returns to the American public, probably for fear the torches and pitchforks were about to come out. Buffett explains it’s not really Mitt Romney’s fault he gets to keep such a greater percentage of his money than you do- it’s Congress to blame for the situation:

“It’s the wrong policy to have. He’s not going to pay more than the law requires, and I don’t fault him for that in the least. But I do fault a law that allows him and me earning enormous sums to pay overall federal taxes at a rate that’s about half what the average person in my office pays.”

Buffett has long been campaigning for a fairer tax rate that will ensure everyone carries the tax burden equally in the US. He continues:

“[Romney] makes his money the same way I make my money. He makes money by moving around big bucks, not by straining his back or going to work and cleaning toilets or whatever it may be. He makes it shoving around money.”

Well, Warren, when you say it like that, it doesn’t really make Mittens any friends, does it? Do you think “vulture capitalists” like Mitt Romney should be taxed like a janitor or schoolteacher?

As if finishing in third-place behind Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich wasn’t bad enough for GOP Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum he also had to deal with a glitter bombing incident during the South Carolina primary.

The glitter bombing occurred on Saturday night as protesters crashed the South Carolina primary party last night while chanting:

“Rick, Rick, Rick, bigot, bigot, bigot.”

After Santorum gave his typical right-wing conservative speech where he hailed family values various members from gay-rights groups and Occupy Charleston burst into the room chanting “Except when you’re gay!”

Here’s the video of the glitter bombing:

According to the Summerville Patch no one was arrested, but police were required to use force in removing approximately 20 protesters from the Citadel where the party took place.

In speaking about the groups motives one protester said it was “the people of South Carolina taking a stand against” bigotry.

This isn’t the first time Rick Santorum has been glitter bombed, the same type of protesting also occurred in Iowa where a man amusing chanted “stop the hate, taste the rainbow” as he tossed glitter at Santorum. Here’s the Iowa video:

Santorum has also been confronted by various other groups over his anti-gay agenda, including one incident in which he was approached by a transgendered voter, however no glitter was thrown during that confrontation.

What do you think about glitter bombing protests, are they effective in raising awareness or a childish attempt at making Rick Santorum look like a rainbow?

Say what you like about Stephen Colbert, when he steps away from the set of his show, he has a real knack for motivating the hell out of young, politically minded folk.

Whether it’s at the Rally to Restore Fear and/or Sanity on the National Mall in 2010, or the massive gathering that showed up to support him in his quest to create a Super PAC in 2011, Colbert and his ensuing bump should- if it does not already- inspire no small bit of envy and fear in the politicians he’s capable of provoking support or outcry for or against. Essentially, if Reddit was a person, it would totally be Stephen Colbert but maybe with less color from the sun and more chins.

Now that Colbert has his Super PAC- well, “Jon Stewart’s Super PAC” and most recently named the Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC- he’s been stumping for Herman Cain in today’s GOP battleground, South Carolina. Colbert happens to be from the state, hilariously referenced in a bit on his show where a Frank Luntz rally attendee calls in a “Charleston Dandy,” and it was there he hosted his “Rock Me Like a Herman Cain” rally.

At the event yesterday, Colbert mainly cracked wise to his presumably left leaning audience, saying:

“If corporations are people then I’m a people person. So it’s a civil rights issue. I don’t like it when people compare me to Martin Luther King. I like it when I do it myself… I’m the Martin Luther King of corporate civil rights. I’m the Lockheed Martin Luther Burger King, you might say.”

However, in typical Colbert fashion, the pointed satire was not entirely absent. He added:

“The pundits have asked, is this all some joke? If they are saying this is a joke, then they are saying the whole system of campaign financing is a joke.”

Do you think Stephen Colbert and Herman Cain’s rally could be effective in raising awareness about campaign finance reform?

Just minutes before the televised Republican presidential debate began on Thursday night GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich released his tax returns, showing that he paid $994,708 in federal taxes in 2010.

The tax return shows that Gingrich paid those taxes on an earned income of $3.1 million, making his effective tax rate 31.6 percent of his adjusted income.

The move comes less than a week after Mitt Romney revealed that he only pays 15 percent of his annual income into the tax system. Romney is estimated to be worth more than $250 million compared to Newt Gingrich’s $6.5 million personal worth, part of which is earned from his Gingrich Productions company which produces his various books and films and claimed $500,000 in annual sales in 2010.

Newt also provided to charity, donating 2.6 percent of his income in 2010 for a total of $81,133 in cash and checks. While nearly $100,000 in charitable donations may sound like a decent chunk of his money the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University says the average charitable donations made by a household earning over $2 million per year is $259,692.

The tax issue is likely to be a pushing point for Newt Gingrich moving forward as many American feel that the super-rich in America pay too little in taxes and use loopholes to pay in the same tax bracket as some of American’s poorest citizens.

Do you believe that Newt Gingrich’s plan to release his 2010 tax return will work in his favor or do American’s want a proven business leader running the country during an extended period of economic failure?

Mitt Romney has experienced some setbacks lately ahead of the South Carolina primary. South Carolina could be pivotal for the ex-Massachusetts Governor so he can convince conservatives that he is their guy.

Romney has been hit with several issue as of late.

The first was that he admitted recently that some of his investments are in the Cayman Islands. The Cayman islands are a tax haven for a lot of wealthy businessmen.

The second issue is that when asked about the tax rate that he pays he said that him and his wife pay around 15% of their income in federal withholding. That would put them in a lower tax bracket than most American workers. It didn’t help that when asked how much money he made form speaking fees his reply was “Not Much”. It turned out that last year alone he made more than $370,000 is speaking fees.

The third issue is that with Rick Perry now out of the race, the conservative vote may be able to unite behind either Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum. Until recently, Romney has banked on the ability to take between 20% and 30% of the vote(comprised of moderates) in any State and let the rest of the votes be split between the other candidates. With a unified Conservative opposition Romney may have more headaches.

Polls have Gingrich neck and neck in South Carolina. Governor Perry dropping out of the race today and endorsing Newt Gingrich might just help him edge out Romney in the first Southern State.

Romney has also been hounded to release his tax returns to show his true wealth. He has vowed to do it but not until April, long after the primaries could be over. Critics are pressuring him to do it now.

Do you think all of this bad press will hurt Mitt Romney or do you think he has the Republican nomination wrapped up.

Jon Huntsman will no longer be seeking the office of the President. Sources close to the Republican primary race say he will officially make his announcement on Monday.

During his end of campaign event Huntsman is expected to endorse Mitt Romney during an event in South Carolina on Monday.

While his very small percentage of expected voters in the area may not make a huge difference in voting they will likely help add to the 21 point lead Romney has received in a recent AP poll.

Huntman routinely fell to the bottom of polling in Iowa, New Hampshire and now in South Carolina where his expected vote count was closer to 1 to 2 percent.

Further details regarding his plans have not been revealed as campaign officials spoke only on condition of anomynity.

Do you think Jon Huntsman dropping out of the GOP primary and endorsing Mitt Romney is going to make any difference?

Warren Buffett caught the attention of those both for and against a fairer tax rate in the US back in August when he wrote a missive for the New York Times calling out the current tax system as unfairly favoring the very wealthy.

Going against the grain of the top 1% by admitting he pays a lower effective tax rate, Buffett lamented the fact that his tax rate was far lower than that of his secretary and called on the government to balance the tax burden. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell- who, it cannot be underscored enough times, appears to be melting very slowly before the horrified eyes of his constituents- responded by inviting Buffett to send in a check, as if that magically cures the inequities of the current system. Fellow Republican John Thune, World Champion of Not Getting It, then introduced a measure to allow wealthy Americans like Buffett to write in donations on a tax form, something Buffett referred to as “a tax policy only a Republican could come up with.”

Buffett is now calling on the GOP with a generous challenge- for every dollar donated by congressional Republicans to pay down the debt, he will match the contribution. That goes triple for McConnell- but a spokesman for the Senator seems to indicate that his employer still wishes to ignore the point, saying on behalf of the Kentucky lawmaker:

“I look forward to Mr. Buffett matching a healthy batch of checks from those who actually want to pay higher taxes, including congressional Democrats, the president and the DNC.”

Do you think that Warren Buffett is right, and America’s richest citizens need to start pulling their weight?

As expected GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney easily won the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday. With 40% of polls reporting Romney was leading Ron Paul with 37% of the vote. Paul was in second place with 24% while Jon Huntsman registered 17% of the vote.

Falling out of favor with New Hampshire voters were Newt Gingrich (10.1%) and Rick Santorum (9.9%) while Rick Perry commanded just 1% of reported votes.

CNN was projecting at that time that Paul would stay in second place followed by Huntsman in third.

Speaking about his third place finish Huntsman asserted his decision to stay in the race, noting that there were “at least three tickets out of New Hampshire.”

In a victory speech Mitt Romney told his supporters they had “made history” and that he was ready to take on the “failed leadership” of President Obama better then any of his opponents.

In exit polling New Hampshire voters said the economy was their number one concern while one-third of voters said Romney’s ability to beat President Obama was at the top of their decision list, a statistic that matched exit polling in Iowa.

Following his win Romney’s opponents quickly shifted their attention to the Jan. 21 primary in South Carolina. Gingrich was the first to focus on the next contest.

Romney’s rivals were trying to shift attention to South Carolina’s vote on Jan. 21 even before the polls closed. “We’re all going to be dividing the vote, and I think it will shake itself out when we get to South Carolina,” said Gingrich.

Here’s Mitt Romney’s New Hampshire victory speech:

There’s a very important lesson that politicians are taught earlier in their career, don’t say anything that can be misconstrued or tied into your past failures, apparently Mitt Romney missed both parts of that lecture.

During a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Monday the GOP presidential hopeful was discussing the advantages of purchasing health care services when he pointed out that if you don’t like your insurance company “you can fire them.” While that statement would have been fine he instead said:

“I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.”

In itself the statement makes sense however liberal media outlets, bloggers and constituents have blasted Romney for the comment while using the opportunity to point out that his own Bain Capital reap huge profits in 2011 after partaking in massive layoffs.

While I personally don’t see the harm in his wording Romney hasn’t exactly played fair when President Obama has made certain statements. In fact Obama was quoting John McCain when he mocked his efforts by telling reporters ”If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” Romney, after being told that the quote was from McCain and not Obama continued to attribute it to the President.

Therefore by Mitt Romney’s own admission as Greg Sargent in the Washington Post writes, ”it wouldn’t be questionable at all to whittle Romney’s quote down to a claim that he enjoys the act of firing people.”

With John McCain recently endorsing Mitt Romney the former Massachusetts governor sure picked a strange time to dredge back up his own endorsers 2008 misfire, even if he is now trying to pin it on President Obama.

Here’s Romney’s “Fire People” speech:

Do you think it’s fair to attribute a misquoted Mitt Romney attribution to his run for the Presidency since he’s playing by the same dirty trick?

Rick Santorum might want to find a better comparison for gay marriage then polygamy. During an address to a New Hampshire college crowd the GOP presidential hopeful was booed when comparing gay marriage to the practice of wedding several wives.

When a student said she believed everybody had the right to get married Santorum quickly shot back:

“So anyone can marry anybody else?”

He then added:

“So if that’s the case, then everyone can marry several people. So you can be married to five people. Is that OK?”

The conversation then turned towards the use of federal force to stop state laws regarding gay marriage and medical marijuana to which Rick Santorum admitted:

“I don’t know my medical marijuana laws very well.”

Santorum then went on to call drugs a hazard to society and said he learned about their negative effects when he was in “college too” a response that immediately received more boos from the crowd.

As Rick Santorum left his address boos and jeers easily drowned out the sound of applause according to several people in attendance.

Santorum has made his opposition to abortion and gay rights known for a very long time while preaching his close alignment to his religion, while that type of pandering to social conservatives may win him respect in some circles perhaps a college crowd wasn’t the right place to spread his message out outward discuss for various groups.

Do you believe that the GOP’s hard stance against gay marriage, the legalization of medical marijuana and various other issues that the youth vote believes in is hurting their political aspirations?

It’s official Rick Santorum is now the GOP Presidential front runner, well by a margin of 12 votes out of 120,000 cast in Iowa but none the less he is now the man to beat.

While I could wax and wane all political about the Iowa Caucus the truth is there’s a better story, a story of determination by a single website owner to rise above the GOP contenders and bring the word “Santorum” to the number one page rank on Google and that man has managed to get “SpreadingSantorum.com” ranked above even the official Rick Santorum campaign website.

So what is SpreadingSantorum.com? It’s a website devoted to shooting down Rick Santorum at every turn possible and exposing him as the scum of the earth. While I won’t make any comments on the “truth” found in the site it does show that with a little hard work anyone can rank for popular search terms in Google with the right viral campaign.

We definitely are not the first website to link over to the column, back in September 2011 the site received hundreds of links from bloggers supporting the page, those links in turn resulted in the number one pagerank for SpreadingSantorum, a rank that continues to this day.

I bring up the site now because as my screenshot above shows, the site is being prominently featured next to polling numbers and GOP primary news, a nice juxtaposition for a crudely created website that relentlessly pokes fun at the man they call ‘unelectable.” Heck even Stephen Colbert gave a salute to Spreading Santorum.

Here’s the opening page when you click on the link and visit the domain:

Among the sites Twitter followers is Jeopardy uber-champion Ken Jennings which means the site can’t be all bad right?

It might be a little NSFW so beware before you visit and if you simply can’t help yourself here’s the link: SpreadingSantorum.com.

Are you surprised to learn that the Rick Santorum website hasn’t worked harder to move the page down in the ranking with the help of SEO experts and their conservative blogging community? I’ve seen a lot of persistent top ranking websites in my lifetime but none that have held on like this independent blog.

There’s a point when a political candidate needs to throw in the towel and agree to stop spending their political contributors money, for Michelle Bachmann that day should have been Tuesday when she received 5% of the Iowa Caucus votes and finished far behind her fellow competitors in sixth place.

Instead Michelle Bachmann has decided to continue her presidential run, announcing to supporters on Tuesday night that she was the only true conservative in the race that could defeat President Obama in a showdown.

The last place finish among all candidates who contested the state Bachmann told a very small crowd of supporters and reporters:

“There are many more chapters to be written on the path to our party’s nomination.”

“I believe that I am that true conservative who can and who will defeat Barack Obama in 2012.”

“What we need is a fearless conservative, one with no compromises on their record on spending on health care on crony capitalism on defending America on standing with our ally Israel,” she said.

Michelle Bachmann’s Iowa Caucus speech came just shortly after her campaign manager Keith Nahigian said he might leave the campaign.

The downfall of Bachmann comes after a strong Iowa GOP summer straw poll which showed her ahead of the back, however various strange answers and misguided political adds eventually strained her relationship with voters.

Iowa should have also been a strong showing for Michelle Bachmann because she grew up in the state and had showed much of her campaign support for the area by constantly visiting Iowa and spreading her conservative views.

A common response from Iowa voters could be heard on Tuesday as they said of Bachmann “it isn’t her time” and “she’s nice” but not Presidential material.

Are you surprised that Bachmann finished in sixth place or more shocked at the fact that she plans to continue wasting donor money by furthering her losses in other states?
