Google isn’t slowing down any time soon and according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, they will soon be launching their very own personal cloud storage service which is said to be called Drive.

With the increased amount of data and improvement in technology, both online and offline, the popularity of cloud hosting services has skyrocketed over the last several years. Dropbox is one of those services that has done incredibly well in the space, and who has a loyal customer base that enjoys the simplicity of sharing and hosting their files.

Via ZDNet:

“Sources are reported to have said that, like most Google services, it will be free for free for most of its consumers… unless they require a lot of storage. How much is a lot? Good question. We don’t have any answers. Dropbox prices, which are typical for personal cloud storage, currently give users 2GB for free, then charges them $9.99 for 50 GB and $19.99 for 100 GB. Google’s response to this story is that “We do not comment on rumor or speculation.” OK. Fair enough.”

Now, for those who use Docs, you get 1GB of storage for free and can upload all sorts of different files. One can upgrade all the way to a whopping 16TB if need be. This service however will be different from the basic file hosting service through Docs.

The simple fact is, many people rely off of the tech giant’s services, anywhere from documents, to photos, to videos. People are already sharing a lot of their content with their services, so it just makes sense to allow users to have it hosted as well.

Would you use a Google cloud storage service if the prices were reasonable or would you stick to something else?

When Google announced its proposed changes to its privacy policy, it sparked nothing short of an uproar from your privacy advocates to your casual internet user. It even recently drew attention from the European Union, with regulators calling on Google to halt the changes.

Google still hasn’t backed down, and very likely won’t, but that isn’t stopping some from trying to put a stop to it. In fact, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a consumer watchdog group, has now filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block Google’s privacy policy changes.

The group isn’t suing Google directly, however. According to a report by the LA Times:

In an unusual end run around the FTC, the watchdog group is asking a federal judge to issue a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to compel federal regulators to enforce a settlement they reached with Google last year and protect consumers who will be “left without recourse if the commission fails to enforce its order.”

Last year, Google reached a settlement after being charged with violating privacy laws when it exposed the personal data of Gmail users when it released its now-defunct Google Buzz product. As a result of the settlement, Google was required by the FTC to build privacy protection into its products, and to avoid sharing user data outside the company without express permission from users.

Google denied that the upcoming privacy policy changes violate their settlement with the FTC, saying:

We take privacy very seriously. We’re happy to engage in constructive conversations about our updated privacy policy but EPIC is wrong on the facts and the law,” a Google spokesman said.

Google, as with many online services, tracks certain data and usage whether it be for advertisers or to improve their services for users on a much more personalized basis. Legally, one can only track so much, however, it seems that in their quest to learn more about the end user, they’ve setup a program called Screenwise which is essentially a data collection program

There’s basically two programs: One is installing a browser extension “that will share with Google the sites you visit and how you use them.” Currently, they’ve already received a large response and is closed at this time. What are they offering to people? A $5 Amazon gift card to sign up and then a $5 gift card for every three months they stick to the program for $25 in total.

The other program, Screenwise Panel, was offered exclusively to members of Knowledge Networks which appears to be some sort of research company. For those who join the program, they’ll receive $100 for signing up and then $20 each month they participate. What makes this program different from the other is that people are sent a router which also happens to be the data collector.

From the looks of it, people participating switch out their current router for the new one.

Via Ars Technica:

“If KN users opt to participate, they receive a black box, called the Screenwise Data Collector. The box sits on users’ home networks, acting as a router and WiFi access point that monitors the traffic of connected devices. According to the program’s FAQ, it captures a “household’s web access,” but doesn’t collect information from “other devices” in the house, such as game consoles.”

Would you allow all your web usage to be tracked if you were being compensated for it? How much would you have to be paid for it to be worth it?

Google Chrome, the second most popular Internet browser, is now available on Android. Currently, it’s in beta and only for 4.0 ICS devices. Chrome has been out since 2008, but it never did come to mobile devices.

This has quite a few speculating as to why and why the tech giant never made it happen. Well, it seems that they finally have and so far, the reviews are pretty solid overall. This is sure to get Opera and Firefox riled up as they have their own mobile browsers.

Personally, I’ve used Opera mobile for quite some time and love it, but being that Chrome for Android can sync all my data such as bookmarks, browsing history, etc., it’s a no brainer to switch.

Via CNet:

“The new browser, unlike the stock Android browser, is available in the Android Market so that people don’t have to wait for handset makers to offer it through an operating system upgrade. But its reliance on newer hardware acceleration interfaces means it only works on Ice Cream Sandwich, which despite emerging last year on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone remains a rarity in the real world.”

“Chrome for Android includes the desktop version’s V8 JavaScript engine, has gesture-based controls for moving among multiple tabs, synchronizes with the desktop version of Chrome, and shuts out plug-ins including Adobe Systems’ Flash Player and Google’s own Native Client. With its performance and features, Google expects Android users to increase their browser activity.”

With great reviews and it not even out of beta yet, we’re sure to see it improve.

Do you use Google Chrome? If not, what’s your Internet browser of choice?

Well it looks like law enforcement will have a new tool in its toolbox in its fight against the proliferation of meth labs that is growing in cities across the nation.

Google Maps.

Yes, you read that right folks.

Apparently using something called geospatial predictive analysis researchers are able to use Google Maps, along with some really cutting-edge algorithms and data analysis, to find meth labs and track the gang activity around its production.

This new technology is just a part of the larger field of geographical information systems (GIS) that uses data points and software to turn maps into sophisticated analysis tools. In 2009 Max Lu, a professor at Kansas State University, used this type of technology to develop a new and interesting model to find meth labs.

Needless to say this caught the attention of law enforcement agencies around the nation who are collaborating to use the new technology in something called the Smart Policing Initiative that will allow them to integrate geospatial predictive analysis into their crimefighting toolbox.

Participating police departments such as Lowell, Massachussetts, and New Haven, Connecticut, are using similar methods to Lu’s to find blocks likely to host discreet drug dealers or where car break-ins will take place. One firm, SPADAC (now owned by GeoEye), recently boasted of their ability to use predictive analysis to find suburbs that street gangs are likely to recruit in.

via Fast Company

Additionally the DEA has taken an interest in the technology and are using it in their battle along the US-Mexican border.

Search Engine giant Google has unveiled a new site for a radical new idea. They are using the new platform “Solve for X to figure our radical solutions to radical problems.

Google launched the TED like site to be a forum for users to come to with a three prong approach. Identify a big picture problem, propose radical solutions and then try to come out with a breakthrough technology to fix it.

The Solve for X website says,

“Solve for X is a place where the curious can go to hear and discuss radical technology ideas for solving global problems. Radical in the sense that the solutions could help billions of people. Radical in the sense that the audaciousness of the proposals makes them sound like science fiction. And radical in the sense that there is some real technology breakthrough on the horizon to give us all hope that these ideas could really be brought to life.”

The project is believed to be linked to Google X. Google X is the company’s top secret innovation lab where they really have come up with some crazy ideas that just may change the world. There are rumors of driverless cars, web connected appliances and moon elevators.

Google runs the Google X labs like the CIA, mysterious and secretive. There is supposedly a Google X lab at the company’s headquarters and another at an undisclosed location.

Rodney Brooks, a professor emeritus at M.I.T.’s computer science and artificial intelligence lab said,

“They’re pretty far out in front right now. But Google’s not an ordinary company, so almost nothing applies.”

Does Google Solve for X interest you?

Check out a video on the Solve for X project.

It never fails that when any of the big boys of the web, like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or even Twitter, decide to make changes to any of their privacy policies the web erupts with various degrees of outrage and condemnation. You know – like how when Google announced the other week that it was going to unify all its various privacy policies into one homogeneous policy.

The resulting furor over the news had the European Union calling for the to slow down and wait, The US Congress has voice concerns about the changes, and we are still in the early days of their move to unify everything.

Of course Google isn’t alone these days when attracting the eye of regulators from governments around the world as we have seen how every time Facebook make changes, even the smallest one, the uproar is immediate and forceful.

To help us try and gain some understanding what is behind all these privacy issues the folks at Frugal Dad has put together a well rounded infographic for you to look over and figure out what is going on. Be sure to let us know in the comments what you think about this whole mess.

Google, who had a contest back in 2010 for one city to get a blazing fast, 1 Gigabit Internet connection, has finally started building the service in Kansas City who was the lucky one out of 1100 other cities who entered.

Kansas City was chose the winner last March. Since then, they’ve been surveying the area and planning out the whole process which starts today with laying of cable. The reason for such fast Internet is thanks to fiber optic lines which can support incredibly fast data speeds. As someone who relies off of the Internet greatly, may just have to move down to Kansas. Okay, probably not, but I’m still jealous.

Via ReadWriteWeb:

“Kansas City won the Google Fiber competition because it met all of Google’s various requirements. “Our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community, and develop working partnerships with the local government, utility and community organizations,” its FAQ says. “We believe we’ve found this in both Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri.”

“Kevin Lo (General Manager of Google Access) says the network will use “thousands of miles” of cable. The backbone of the network will be built first, and then Google Fiber will be connected to homes around Kansas City. The cable work starts today after months of surveying and measuring, as well as some negotiations around how to use the city’s utility poles.”

The speeds are quite impressive considering that Verizon FIOS which runs off of a fiber network, only reaches 150mbps, nearly 7 times slower.

What would you do with a 1 Gigabit Internet connection from Google?

If there is one thing you can say about Google it is that it isn’t afraid of trying to the impossible, or at least try to help solve the impossible – the “X” questions of our world and lives.

This is the reasoning behind the launch of a new Google project, and site, called “Solve for X” which is intended to be a conference for the big thinkers of our world to come together and take a second look at the so-called radical idea meant to solve global problems.

If you are getting flashes of the famous ‘elitist’ TED conferences you would probably be right as this would appear to be who Google is directing this new conference directly at. It would also appear that Google isn’t taking the slow track with the conference either as VentureBeat reports that Google has already held an inaugural conference over the weekend.

Apparently the subjects that were talked about included transforming education, improvements in agriculture, synthetic biology and carbon-negative biofuels. Richard DeVaul has said that Google will be making videos of the presentations available on YouTube later today.

The Solve for X conference seems to go hand-in-hand with Google X, the company’s secret lab for fantastical endeavors. The Solve for X site isn’t yet open to the public, but you can sign up to be alerted when it does. Google has released a short promo video (above), and other clues have popped up over the weekend as well, like instructions for presenters hidden within the CSS code of the site.

Here is a short video of what the idea is about.

Android seems to be the operating system of choice when it comes to the US government and military. They’ve managed to create an operating system that is highly secure and is capable of sending highly classified data over cellular networks.

Previously, the government and military relied off of more antiquated phones. Being that technology continues to improve, devices get even smaller, and stronger materials such as Gorilla Glass are on the market, one can create a far more powerful and durable smartphone.

Via CNN:

“Some U.S. officials this year are expected to get smartphones capable of handling classified government documents over cellular networks, according to people involved in the project. The phones will run a modified version of Google’s Android software, which is being developed as part of an initiative that spans multiple federal agencies and government contractors, these people said.”

“The smartphones are first being deployed to U.S. soldiers, people familiar with the project said. Later, federal agencies are expected to get phones for sending and receiving government cables while away from their offices, sources said. Eventually, local governments and corporations could give workers phones with similar software.”

The Army has been testing touch screen devices for about two years now. Last year, they sent 40 phones to forces overseas. They plan to change that this year by shipping out 50 phones and 75 tablets overseas to troops just in March.

“Currently, the United States doesn’t allow government workers or soldiers to use smartphones for sending classified messages because the devices have not met security certifications.”

Do you think these Android phones and tablets are a good choice for the government?

Google has come under quite a bit of fire recently over the upcoming revamped privacy policy, and now they’re getting some heat from European Union regulators.

According to a report by Reuters, European Union regulators sent a letter to Google CEO Larry Page asking the company to refrain from implementing the privacy policy changes until the implications behind the change are fully understood.

“Given the wide range of services you offer, and the popularity of these services, changes in your privacy policy may affect many citizens in most or all of the EU member states,” members of the Article 29 working group said in a letter to Page.

“We wish to check the possible consequences for the protection of the personal data of these citizens in a coordinated way,” the group said, adding that the investigation would be headed up by French data protection firm CNIL.

“In light of the above, we call for a pause in the interests of ensuring that there can be no misunderstanding about Google’s commitments to information rights of their users and EU citizens, until we have completed our analysis.”

Despite pressure from the European Uninion regulators, Google has no plans to back down. Google Privacy Counsel Peter Fleischer issued a response to the group, saying that while it would be happy to discuss the matter further with the CNIL, the company will not halt the rollout of its new privacy policy.

“As you will know, we had extensively pre-briefed data protection authorities across the EU prior to the launch of our notification to users on 24 January 2012,” Fleischer wrote. “At no stage did any EU regulator suggest that any sort of pause would be appropriate. Since we finished these extensive briefings, we have notified over 350 million Google account holders, as well as providing highly visible notices to all our non-authenticated users.”

Google, Google, Google, you are so full of surprises aren’t you, or at least it would appear so given your request to the Federal Communications Commission for permission to test a mysterious “entertainment device” that will utilize Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The request is limited to allow only Google employees in four specific cities: Mountain View, Los Angeles, Cambridge, and New York

So what are you up to Google?

Looking to add something to your Google TV service or perhaps you want to get into the gaming business for all those social games on Google+.

According to Google’s own application which was filed in December this is what they had to say to the FCC

Explanation:

Google is developing an entertainment device that requires testing outside the laboratory environment. The device is in the prototyping phase and will be modified prior to final compliance testing.

Purpose of Operation:

Testing throughput and stability of home WiFi networks using an entertainment device. Testing will include functional testing of all subsystems, including WiFi and Bluetooth radio. Users will connect their device to home WiFi networks and use Bluetooth to connect to other home electronics equipment. This line of testing will reveal real world engineering issues and reliability of networks. The device utilizes a standard WiFi/Bluetooth module, and the planned testing is not directed at evaluating the radio frequency characteristics of the module (which are known), but rather at the throughput and stability of the home WiFi networks that will support the device, as well as the basic functionality of the device. From this testing we hope to modify the design in order to maximize product robustness and user experience. Utilizing the requested number of units will allow testing of real world network performance and its impact on applications running on the device, so that any problems can be discovered and addressed promptly. All devices will be used by and registered to specific individuals (all Google employees), and Google will maintain a record of each device, so that they can be easily recalled at any time during testing and when testing is complete.

This might not seem all that important but the thing is that officially the Google Wallet, the fancy payment app from Google, is only available right now on the Sprint version of the Samsung S 4G. However, according to an Android blog called Droid Life the app has been spotted on an unlocked version of the Galaxy Nexus, Google’s flagship handset, that was using an AT&T SIM card.

Of course this will probably be great news to a large number of people who are looking forward to being able to use Google’s payment service for all their purchase needs, well at least in stores that will support it.

Curiously though the payment system uses Near Field Communication (NFC) circuitry to allow for retail purchases using your smartphone but even though this NFC technology is making its way into more and more smartphones as standard technology only Sprint owners of the Galaxy S 4G are ‘technically allowed’ to use the Google app.

Of course NFC payments using smartphones is being declared as the next big are of commerce as we all excitedly throw away our wallets and dive in head first to paying for everything with our smartphones, which of course all the providers, hardware and software, want us desperately to do since they will all make a nice slice of cash off of our purchases; not to mention but add extensively to their coffers of aggregated data.

Google who has a slew of different products and services, was ordered by a french court to pay $660,000 in damages to a French mapping company that claimed they were stifling competition by offering Google Maps for free.

The company has been under fire lately due to changes to their privacy policy that basically consolidates all 60+ privacy policies across all their products and services, into one. This is not to mention the fact that the FTC is looking into claims of anti-trust practices and even added Google+ to the probe after the social network was implemented into search results.

Via PCMag:

“Bottin Cartographes, which offers map services to businesses for a cost, filed an unfair competition complaint against Google France and its parent company Google, arguing the Web giant was engaging in anticompetitive practices by providing free mapping services. The Paris court on Tuesday upheld the compliant, ordering Google to pay 500,000 Euros ($660,000) in damages and interest to Bottin Cartographes along with a 15,000 ($20,000) Euro fine, according to an AFP report.”

The french mapping company claimed that what was being done was an illegal strategy to remove competitors from the market and it seems the courts agreed that that was the case.

“However, a Google France spokesman told the AFP that the company is planning to fight the ruling. ”We will appeal this decision,” the spokesman said. “We remain convinced that a free high-quality mapping tool is beneficial for both Internet users and websites. There remains competition in this sector for us, both in France and internationally.”

Do you think the ruling against Google was fair?

Microsoft is the latest to join in the debate about Google and their recent changes to their privacy policy. Recently, Google announced they will be making changes to their privacy policy and consolidating all of the privacy policies across their slew of products, into one single privacy policy.

This raised a lot of concerns as some of the things it would allow is to take your search history and use it on other products, which would allow advertisers to retarget users across different products. The company has come out about the changes and even sent a letter to Congress explaining things.

Via Informationweek:

“The changes Google announced make it harder, not easier, for people to stay in control of their own information,” said Microsoft chief spokesman Frank Shaw, in a blog entry Wednesday. “We take a different approach–we work to keep you safe and secure online, to give you control over your data, and to offer you the choice of saving your information on your hard drive, in the cloud, or on both.”

“Shaw said that, in contrast to some versions of Google’s products, Microsoft services like Hotmail and Office 365 don’t serve up user information to advertisers. He also touted Internet Explorer’s built-in tracking protection feature. To further emphasize the point, Microsoft is running an ad in major newspapers this week that says the company is “Putting People First.”

In the ad, they say the privacy changes are cloaked in comfortable language, language that makes it seem like Google has users’ best interest at heart when in all actuality, they’re making it easier for them to connect the dots between everything you do while using any of their services.

Have you looked at Google’s new privacy policy? Do you think Microsoft is fair in their statement?

President Barack Obama held an “online conversation” with the American people yesterday. The event was moderated by Google and people were encouraged all week to submit questions for the President via YouTube. Users could also give a thumbs up or down to the videos and the ones most popular would be asked of Obama.

Well it turns out the most popular questions all concerned the Drug War or Marijuana Legalization. Obama wouldn’t even acknowledge the questions let along answer them. President Obama did address such pressing national issues as late-night snacks, dancing and his tennis skills.

Yet for some reason the top rated question by retired deputy chief of police in Los AngelesStephen Downing, which got the most votes at 4,500 was completely ignored.

Downing, a board member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition said the following in response to his question being ignored,

“It’s worse than silly that YouTube and Google would waste the time of the president and of the American people discussing things like midnight snacks and playing tennis when there is a much more pressing question on the minds of the people who took the time to participate in voting on submissions. A majority of Americans now support legalizing marijuana to de-fund cartels and gangs, lower incarceration and arrest rates and save scarce public resources, all while generating new much-needed tax revenue. The time to discuss this issue is now. We’re tired of this serious public policy crisis being pushed aside or laughed off.”

President Obama is going to have a lot to answer to on this issue. Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans believe the Drug War is a failure and that laws need to be changed. The costs of arresting and charging people for something as simple as marijuana possession make no sens in a down economy.

Do you think Marijuana should be legalized?

Google Earth was recently updated to version 6.2 and included in the new update is integration with Google+. The social network is growing at a rapid rate and Google is integrating the site with more and more of it’s products.

One of the biggest integrations was in search which caused a lot of people to question the change and even caused the FTC to add it to their probe of the company. Anyways, the new version allows for very easy sharing to your circles on Google+ and letting people see where you’ve traveled to, of course virtually.

Via eWeek:

“Google continued its wholesale integration of Google+ with its existing applications, launching Google Earth 6.2 with the capability to let users share their virtual images with their contacts on the social network. Google Earth 6.2 includes the option to let users share a screenshot of their current Google Earth image, as well as images of places they’ve already “virtually traveled” with contacts in their Circles.”

“To share images of cities, oceans and other location to Google+ followers, users must sign into their Google Account in the upper right hand corner of Google Earth and click the Share option.”

The company has recently been quite the topic of conversation lately. On one side, over 90 Million people are using their social network with 60 percent being active daily and having a great experience. On the other side, social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are concerned, while they won’t say it, that Google will cut into their market share by further integrating Google+ into all of its products and services.

Do you use Google Earth?

Motorola Mobility who was recently acquired by Google and still waiting for the deal to be approved, posted an $80 Million loss for the fourth quarter as well as disappointing sales of their tablets.

They saw just 200,000 of the Xyboard and Xoom sold. Competition with other Android tablets and the iPad is very fierce. While they did lose money in the fourth quarter, they did generate more revenue year-over-year at $3.4 Billion.

Google is hoping for the merger with the company to go through despite concerns. If the deal is not approved, it’ll cost the tech giant a whopping $2.5 Billion dubbed a “break-up fee”.

Via The Washington Post:

“If not for certain items unrelated to its ongoing business, Motorola Mobility said it would have earned 20 cents per share in its most recent quarter. That’s below the average estimate of 26 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet. Before the company released its preliminary results earlier this month, analysts were expecting 42 cents per share.”

Although there was bad news, it didn’t really affect stock price.

“The results didn’t sway Motorola Mobility’s stock that much because Google’s $40-per-share offer is still on the table. Motorola Mobility’s shares edged up 7 cents to $38.74 in extended trading, after rising 7 cents during regular trading as well. Google shares added 90 cents to $569 after hours.”

The company has quite a year ahead. The Droid line of smartphones and the recently introduced Droid Razr, are doing well. It seems that in order to do well with tablets, they need to roll out new models and/or make them more appealing and attention worthy.

Do you think the Motorola Mobilty/Google acquisition will go through?

Android tablets are becoming more popular and that means they’re taking up more and more market share. The iPad is still the top dog currently in the marketplace, but with dozens and dozens of tablets available, growth is increasing.

Now, the iPad 2 is a great device and has helped Apple propel itself to outstanding sales. Being that the iPad 3 is supposed to be released this year, we could definitely see these findings change however. The tech company has a very loyal following and very strong brand presence that has people snatch up their products like hotcakes.

With that said, let’s dive into the details:

“Strategy Analytics said Android tablets increased their share of the market to 39 percent in the fourth quarter of the year from 29 percent a year earlier. The iPad accounted for 58 percent of the tablet market in the quarter, down from 68 percent a year earlier, the Boston-based company said.”

“Strategy Analytics director Peter King said global tablet shipments hit a record 26.8 million units in the fourth quarter, up 150 percent from the same period a year ago. Apple sold 15.4 million iPads in the fourth quarter while there were 10.5 million Android tablets shipped.”

It’s a war between both Google and Apple. On one side, it’s competition and on the other side, it’s a bit personal. Steve Jobs vowed to destroy what he considered to be a ripped off version of iOS and with all sorts of patent lawsuits against manufacturers, the company is doing everything they can to crack down on competitors.

Do you have an Android tablet? If so, what do you primarily use it for?
