The Pussycat Dolls are still a thing – who knew? Not I, but apparently the group is back with a new lineup, a fresh roster of women who will make their worldwide debut during the Super Bowl.

Well, not the actual Super Bowl, obviously. That’s for proper pop stars like Prince and Michael Jackson. No, the new PCDs will be strutting their stuff in a Go Daddy Super Bowl advert. Close enough.

Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin and a new Doll, Lauren Bennett, chatted to MTV about the ad, and talked us through what we can expect from the refreshed group. Antin described the Go Daddy TV spot as “breathtakingly beautiful,” not words often associated with internet domain registrars and web hosting. She burbled:

“The girls are on the Go Daddy cloud. They’re angels in heaven, and they’re very angelic. It’s a fun, real-campy kind of sexy. It’s all of that, but again, what we’re doing for this next life of the Pussycat Dolls, the girls are all young. It’s a fresh, young energy. I want to appeal to our young fans.”

Fresh. Young. Translation: Nicole Sherzinger is deemed to be past it at 33. Ouch.

Anyway, the new lineup includes the aforementioned Lauren Bennett (from Antin’s other group, Paradiso Girls), Chrystina Sayers (from Girlicious), Vanessa Curry (dunno), Erica Kiehl Jenkins (dunno) and Paula van Oppen (dunno). Says Antin:

“The dancing is spectacular. Everyone is amazing. It’s the exact right recipe for the new Pussycat Dolls. We just did the Go Daddy commercial, Super Bowl spot — really excited about it. It’s sexy and all that. It’s a quick look for people to see the girls together for the first time.”

I expect nothing less than a musical revolution.

Racing hottie and Go-Daddy spokeswoman Danica Patrick is good to go for her big Sprint Cup debut Feb. 26 at the Daytona 500. Well, at least she will be once she gets into the frame of mind of the infamous honey badger.

“And the honey badger, it was last year, I think, somebody showed me this video of the honey badger, and the commentator on it was very, very funny,” Patrick said Thursday. “Anyway, the honey badger, he doesn’t give a crap, he takes what he wants. And that’s how I’m going to be this year, like a honey badger. But I feel like it’s a little diluted with the football player that has the honey badger nickname, too. He’s No. 7, as well.”

She’s talking about LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, whose association to the honey badger wasn’t enough to keep him from losing 21-0 to Alabama on Monday night’s BCS title game.

“I bet he’s not feeling like a honey badger. I bet — anyway, the video is great,” Patrick said. “He eats a poisonous snake and he falls asleep and wakes right back up. The video is funny, so I encourage you all to watch that. I think Randall something is the commentator or the name on the YouTube video.”

She went on to say:

“I don’t know, it’s a mindset. I even have a honey badger picture on my screen saver on my phone to inspire me. It takes what it wants.”

She may be late to the viral/meme phenom, but she’s going to need all the positive thinking she can get. She’s got 10 races on her schedule in the Sprint Cup Series and a full schedule in the Nationwide Series. She did alright in the July Nationwide race, leading laps and finishing 10th – and crashing across the finish line.

She’s still hot though.

Do you think the honey badger will come through for Danica Patrick?

It’s not news that Go Daddy, one of the biggest domain registrars in the business along with web hosting and online marketing, was up for sale.

What is news, and by the looks of it hot off the press, is that it has finally been sold to a group of private equity firms made up of KKR & Co., Silver Lake Partners, and Technology Crossover Ventures. According to the founder of Go Daddy, Bob Parsons, the plan is to make more partnerships, acquire other companies, and recruit talent, in other words – business as usual.

According to those in the know it wasn’t so much Go Daddy’s domain registrar business that was attractive but rather the other areas that the company is involved in and their potential growth.

The final price paid for Go Daddy?

$2.25 billion, which means Parson’s will have plenty of cash to go on more elephant killing expeditions.

Should my Facebook feed be believed, a number of you all are pulling sickeys today, and a greater number are slogging through work on too much American beer and little sleep.

It seems Super Bowl ads increase in prominence each year, with water cooler and web buzz of the very expensive, often elaborately produced spots drawing a lot of attention and YouTube sharing in the wake of the big game. This year’s set was a bit less controversial then that of last year- to recap, there was a bit of a flap over a pro-life Tim Tebow ad, a gay dating site was excluded, and then the White Stripes (rest in peace!) got a bit snitty because the Air Force stole their “Fell In Love With A Girl” riff. It was pretty dramatic.

This year’s commercials had some apparently fantastic thing with Eminem, a mini Darth Vader 2011 Beetle commercial that caused a lot of people to coo, something to do with GoDaddy, a Groupon commercial many decried as tasteless (and possibly written by Kenneth Cole’s old Tweeter), and Roseanne Barr getting smacked in the head with a tree trunk.

If you want to re-live the Super Bowl ads for 2011 in all their consumerist goodness, click here to watch them in order. (Or pick and choose.)

The Internet’s regulating organization has just approved a proposal to create an unlimited number of customized top-level domains. That means URLs will no longer be restricted to .com, .net, or .us-style suffixes; instead, anyone can apply to have any letter combination become a reality.

Snagging a new name won’t be a simple procedure, however: ICANN will first require proof of a “business plan and technical capacity,” meaning you have to have thousands of dollars of server and router-type equipment to get through. A thorough review process will then make sure the suffix is not offensive and does not infringe on anyone’s intellectual property. The names are also expected to cost a minimum of $100,000 and as much as half a million, so the rush may not be as widespread as some have feared.

The change will go into effect next year, with registration opening in April and the first new names going live toward the end of the year. Once approved, nearly anything could be possible — .microsoft, .mcdonalds, .tech — you name it.

The ruling comes right as current domain registration is hitting a new landmark. Go Daddy has just reached an Internet growth record, becoming the first registrar with 30 million domain names under its belt.

The registration of RulesOfSaving.com pushed the company over the line today. It’s a milestone in a strong year for domain registrations: Go Daddy alone says it’s now registering, renewing, or transferring about one domain name per second, with a whopping 72 percent predicted increase in sales this year compared to last. The trend, its execs say, represents positive news for the entire web-based business industry.

“These numbers really demonstrate how the Internet is alive and well, even in these rough financial times,” Bob Parsons, Go Daddy CEO and founder, commented.

One can only assume the introduction of custom top-level domains will lead to even more growth in 2009 — even if the added activity is limited to big business.
