Google’s getting its annual April Fools’ chuckle in more than one way today. The Gmail team’s announcement of a new Gmail Autopilot feature has become one of the hottest search terms of the morning.

Gmail Autopilot

The Gmail Autopilot gag shows up as a link at the top of Gmail’s Web interface. Clicking the link takes you to this page, which states:

“As more and more everyday communication takes place over email, lots of people have complained about how hard it is to read and respond to every message. This is because they actually read and respond to all their messages.”

The page goes on to provide examples of how the Autopilot feature can help, such as responding to business proposals:

Managing relationships:

And matching your personal style:

Google April Fools!

While Reddit’s Reddigg prank was no doubt a winner, Gmail’s Autopilot — judging by the strong response it’s getting Web-wide — is definitely right up there, too. You can read about some of Google’s past April Fools’ jokes here.
