Georgia Approved to Build First Nuclear Reactors in 30 Years

The nuclear engineering industry has always seen troubled development in the United States. Despite being a stalled source of energy for decades, in a giant leap forward, even a milestone, the United States has given a Georgia utility company its approval to build two new nuclear reactors, the first such approval in 30 years.

Amid safety concerns, nuclear energy accounts for roughly 6% of the world’s energy, and the ongoing debate is stuck somewhere between “nuclear energy is sustainable, renewable, and reduces carbon emissions”, and, in light of disasters like Chernobyl, “nuclear energy is a threat to people and the environment”. Now, Southern Co. and its partners will build the new reactors in Waynesboro, Ga., about 170 miles east of Atlanta, at a plant already housing two operating reactors. The Vogtle plant will be the biggest nuclear complex in the states once it’s functioning by 2017.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission hasn’t granted a license to build a new plans since 1978, one year before Three Mile Island suffered a partial meltdown. Other plants have gotten-going since the incident, but all of their licenses were approved prior to 1978.

The new Georgia reactors come with a price tag of roughly $14 billion, and boast a design called the AP 1000 by Westinghouse, which is said to be far more sturdy and resistant to earthquakes than older models that are currently in operation. The new plants will be able to provide power to one million homes.

Is nuclear power a viable source of alternative energy? Should the U.S. continue to explore the option, or is it simply too dangerous?

Publisher Sorry for Advising Israel to “Take Out” President Obama

A little while back, the publisher of a small Jewish paper in Atlanta printed what he thought was the best advice to Israeli officials as to how to make their country safe. It was simple. Put Mossad agents on assignment to assassinate President Obama. Now the publisher is playing takesies-backsies on his comments since they’ve gotten him national attention.

Well, gee, presidential assassination is something people tend to pay attention to. I’m probably on a list somewhere just for that sentence.

Andrew Adler, owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, wrote in his January 13th column his three-point plan for making Israel safe. It doesn’t exist online, but you can read his original column here.

The juicy bit is option three:

“Three, give the go-ahead for U.S.-based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place, and forcefully dictate that the United States’ policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies. Yes, you read “three” correctly. Order a hit on a president in order to preserve Israel’s existence. Think about it.”

Now is he just a nutjob, or did he actually mean it? “Of course not,” he said. “I wrote it to see what kind of a reaction I was going to get from my readers.”

In a later interview, he called himself an “idiot”, adding “Do I regret writing what I did? Very much so.” The Secret Service commented that it may interview Adler, but wouldn’t say whether or not there was currently an investigation into Alder or his publication.

Do I even have to ask? Do you think Adler’s comments were just… well… stupid?

Jermaine Dupri Forced To Pay Ridiculously Expensive IRS Penalties

Singer Jermaine Dupri has learned a very important and simple lesson, pay your taxes or you could end up with a tax bill twice as high as you originally owed.

According to documents filed in the state of Georgia Dupri was forced to pay $493,818.75 in taxes on an original bill of just $254,782.64. The penalties were added after the singer failed to file a 2007 tax return.

Jermaine Dupri did pay off the full bill but here’s a breakdown of his extra costs:

Interest – $91,721.75
Penalty – $64,969.57
Collection fee – $82,294.79
Costs – $50

I think it’s safe to say that in Jermaine Dupri’s case he’s thinking “lesson learned.”

$77m Powerball ‘Lottery’ Ticket Still Unclaimed, About to Expire

A $77m Powerball lottery ticket, originally sold on June 29, has remained unclaimed by its winner and is close to expiring.

The ticket for the Georgia Lottery will expire on Monday evening at 5pm, when the lottery’s 180-day claim window closes. Georgians: now is the time to start upending sofas and checking wallets.

The winning ticket was sold at the Pilot Travel Center truck stop, along I-20 and just inside the state from Alabama. It came with the numbers 24, 30, 45, 57, and 59, with Powerball number 26. Georgia Lottery spokeswoman Tandi Reddick says:

“Unclaimed Powerball jackpot prize funds are returned proportionately to each participating state based on that state’s sales for the particular drawing.”

In Georgia, all unclaimed prize money is placed back in the prize pool for future games and special prize promotions. It’s still paid out to lottery players, but that probably won’t be much consolation if you found this ticket to a fortune on Tuesday morning.

Anybody who finds the ticket is urged to head down to the Georgia Lottery headquarters in downtown Atlanta, or one of the seven district lottery offices around the state. If you find it after Monday, it’s probably time to curl up into a very, very small ball and sob/shake uncontrollably for the next year. Reddick adds:

“The winner can claim at the Georgia Lottery kiosks at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, located in the baggage claim areas of the North and South terminals.”

EU Restricts Sale of Lethal Injection Drugs to the US

The European Union announced on Wednesday that they were going to put new restrictions on all short and long acting anesthetics to country’s that have not abolished the death penalty.

The European Commission is strengthening export controls on Sodium Thipentol, and other drugs which are used as part of the lethal injection. The commission said to the Associated Press it wanted to “prevent their use for capital punishment, torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

This had been a policy prerogative of death penalty abolitionists for a very long time. Currently no state in the European Union executes prisoners.

Many US states have already announced the delay of some executions from a shortage of Sodium Thiopental that has been going on for years. Other states have had to switch to other barbiturates in order to compensate. It is unclear if the new restrictions would have much, if any effect on US executions.

The EU restrictions are the latest in a long string of international restrictions aimed at the US Lethal Injection process. In April, Great Britain announced that it would not sell any of the three drugs used to execute prisoners anymore to the US. Indian Pharmaceutical companies have also followed suit. The Danish manufacturer of Phenobarbital (one of the replacement drugs being used by Texas, Georgia and Oklahoma) said it would no longer sell the drugs to anyone who would not sign a waiver that the drug would not be used in executions.

If the EU restrictions do have an effect on supply and force death penalty states to find new drugs, they open up all executions to new legal challenges on 8th amendment grounds. The 8th amendment prevents the use of cruel and unusual punishment.

Unemployed Woman Given Wrong Type Of Lottery Ticket, Wins $25 Million

If you win the lottery you’re already considered pretty lucky but when you win the lottery because the store clerk accidentally sold you a Powerball ticket instead of a Mega Millions ticket you’re considered super lucky and that’s what happened this week to Georgia resident Kathy Scruggs.

Kathy realized the store clerks error when purchasing her ticket but she decided to keep the $25 million winner anyways.

The 44-year-old told the Savannah Morning News that she was searching endlessly for a job before her big win, a search she has officially given up.

“I’ve been looking and looking and looking,” Scruggs says, but now “I’m going to build my mom and grandmother a home.”

Scruggs also says she plans to help struggling people cover dental bills while noting “I’m happy and grateful.”

I’m pretty sure I would be “happy and grateful” if I won $25 million as well, hopefully she doesn’t blow through her cash like many lottery winners in the past have.

Saggy Pants Ban Earns Georgia Town $4,000

Nine months ago officials in Albany, Georgia placed a ban on pants and skirts that sit more than 7.5cm below the top of the hips, expose skin or show underwear and thanks to that law they have already raised $4,000.

According to City Attorney Nathan David the Municipal Court says “187 citations have been issued and fines collected” All together the city has raised $3,916.49 since going into effect on November 23.

Under the city ordinance a first offense comes with a fine of $20 while each additional fine runs up a $200 tab.

While city officials don’t have the power to jail offenders and non-paying offenders they are allowed to issue up to 40 hours of community services to be completed instead of a payment.

The city enacted the ordinance after politicians in the United States began relating low hanging clothing to delinquency, poor learning and crime.

Troy Davis Executed In Georgia

After a last minute stay of execution was denied Troy Davis was executed in Georgia on Wednesday, the execution took place at 11:08pm, 3 hours and 8 minutes after the prisoner was scheduled to be put to death.

Prison officials delayed Troy’s execution until a last-ditch plea played out it’s course at which point Davis continued to say he was innocent, pleading for protesters to:

“Dig deeper into this case and find out the truth and asked his family and friends to find out the truth and keep the faith.”

Davis was convicted of killing police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989 however several witnesses who testified in his original court case have since recanted their statements. The scene of the crime also lacked enough physical evidence to convict Davis, a fact that has led to a large grass roots movement to stay his execution.

After gaining national attention various top officials asked that a stay of execution be given to Troy Davis, those supporters ranged from former U.S. President Jimmy Carter all the way up to the pope.

Before his death Amnesty International called for his sentence to be commuted and various human rights groups have promised to further investigate Davis’ case following his execution.

Troy Davis execution: Georgia’s pardons board rejects clemency plea

A day before Troy Davis’ scheduled execution, Georgia’s pardons board has denied clemency, and Davis’ execution is set to proceed on Wednesday.

Davis was convicted on August 30, 1991 of murdering Savanna, Georgia police officer Mark MacPhail. Since his conviction, however, several high-profile individuals came to the man’s defense, including former president Jimmy Carter, former FBI director William Sessions, and even 51 members of Congress.

Davis’ supporters contend that the evidence against the man is unreliable. Seven of the nine witnesses whose testimony helped convict Davis have since recanted their statements, several of which claim that they were coaxed into giving false statements by police.

Additionally, several people have since come forward to say that another man present at the scene, Sylvester Coles, was responsible for the murder. No murder weapon, DNA evidence or any other form of evidence other than eyewitness testimony was ever found.

According to Steve Hayes, spokesman for Georgia’s Board of Pardons and Paroles, the panel came to the decision to deny clemency after listening to hours of testimony from supporters and prosecutors alike. Hayes didn’t disclose specific details on how the panel came to the decision.

Rev. Al Sharpton, who is planning a vigil at the state prison in Jackson city, is asking Chatham County District Attorney Larry Chisolm to block the execution, and requesting that supporters urge the pardons board to reconsider.

“This is probably the most egregious injustice I have seen in a long time, to set a precedent that a man can be executed when the evidence against him has mostly been recanted,” said Sharpton. “It’s unthinkable.”

Davis’ legal team issued a statement in response to the board’s decision, saying:

“The death penalty should not be exercised where doubt exists about the guilt of the accused. The Board did not follow that standard here. The state’s case against Mr. Davis, based largely on discredited eyewitness testimony and an inaccurate ballistics report, cannot resolve the significant, lingering doubts that exist here.”

Georgia Rules: Bulldogs Want Season Ticket Holders To Follow NCAA Regulations

The Georgia Bulldogs are making sure their football fans with season tickets are aware of NCAA rules and follow them to avoid issues. UGA ticket holders received their season passes this week with a letter from athletic director Greg McGarity urging fans to follow all NCAA guidelines in terms of player and game interaction.

In the letter he stated:

“[Supporters] can have NO interaction with any prospective student-athletes, nor can members of The Georgia Bulldog Club do anything for any current student-athletes,” McGarity wrote. “If we just remember those two things, we will go a long way in avoiding any NCAA violations in this area of our program.”

When asked why he included the letter he said:

“In the last year we’ve seen a lot of institutions dealing with issues and we just felt it was important for them to be reminded of the things you can and can’t do,” McGarity said. “Hopefully that way we won’t make the same mistakes some others have made.”

The team went even further, announcing that fans attending the Fan Picture Day on August 20 will not be allowed to bring any items:

“Due to recent public issues surrounding student-athlete autographs across the country, no outside items may be brought to Picture Day.”

Fans will receive two schedule posters that can be signed by players during Fan Picture Day.

It might be a little bit of overkill but during a time when divisional titles are being stripped, coaches are being fired or resigning and school officials are constantly looking over their shoulders, it’s probably not the worst idea in the world to urge fans to be on their best behavior.

Skeletal remains found in Georgia ID’d as those of Kristi Cornwell

Bones found in a wooded area in Georgia have been positively identified as the remains of Kristi Cornwell, a 38-year-old woman who disappeared on August 11th, 2009.

Cornwell was out walking near Blairsville the evening she was last seen alive, talking to her boyfriend on a cell phone when she was presumably abducted. Her boyfriend heard her scream and say “don’t take me!” before the call was terminated. Since Cornwell’s disappearance, her family has mounted a massive search and offered a reward of $50,000 for her safe return or information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for her disappearance.

A man wanted for questioning regarding Cornwell’s disappearance shot himself before police were able to talk to him about the case:

Investigators eventually came up with a possible suspect, James Carringer, 42, who once lived in Young Harris, in North Georgia. When police located Carringer, and surrounded him in Atlanta, he killed himself.

Carringer was also suspected in other attacks — a woman at Kennesaw State University in Cobb County, GA, and a girl in Alabama.

But the GBI never closed the Cornwell case, never officially solved it.

Dental records were used to identify Cornwell’s remains, and it was not disclosed by police under which circumstances the body was located.

Shiloh High School teacher of the year, Keenon Aampay Hall, has resigned from her post at the school in Snellville, Georgia after allegations arose that she seduced a student.

Hall, 29, was an English teacher and cheerleading coach at the school for six years prior to her resignation- a move that her parents told the Atlanta Journal Constitution came due to medical reasons and not the allegations of the unnamed 17-year-old football player. Hall is accused of lowering the student’s grade because he refused to have a baby with her:

“We entered the room … then she gave me some Vodka and ask me do I enjoy drinking?” he wrote. “I told her lies about being a good drinker, but honeslty after one drink I was done. She began feeling my man parts and we had sex.”

The teen also told administrators that Hall gave him cash, a cell phone and had sex with him in a classroom, an encounter the teacher denies. The football player said the teacher eventually turned on him because he didn’t want to get too serious. ”What made Kennon Hall mad at is the fact that I would not give her a baby.”

No charges have yet been brought against Hall, and Gwinnett County officials are investigating the student’s allegations.

Video: Hank Johnson worries Guam could capsize, not a prank

Wait, what?

Below is a video clip of Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), after some severe rambling (seriously, like two minutes of waffling) about the actual size of Guam, pondering whether addition of a significant number of US troops and their families could cause the Guam to capsize:

“My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize,” Johnson said. Willard paused and replied, “We don’t anticipate that.”

According to sources who know about these things, Guam is attached to the ocean’s floor and unlikely to tip even if a whole bunch of people got up on it, like if Guam had a prom and a block party and Quinceañera all at once. When asked for comment, a spokesman for Johnson said he was expressing concern that the “influx of military personnel would overwhelm the island’s infrastructure and ecosystem.” That’s much more reasonable, but it kind of sounded like Johnson feared the island would literally capsize.

Former GA Senator, husband dead in apparent murder suicide

Former Georgia state senator Nancy Schaefer and husband Bruce were found dead of gunshot wounds in their Habersham County home yesterday.

An announcement was made on the House floor last night at around 7:30pm, but no details were disclosed:

The deaths were announced by state Rep. Rick Austin (R-Demorest) and House members immediately stood for a moment of silence at about 7:35 p.m.

“Nancy Schaefer was a great lady, and she served Georgia and her constituents with honor and grace,” Austin told House members.

Autopsies are underway, and law enforcement officials and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are not releasing information on who may have been the shooter until the facts of the case are confirmed by the procedure, saying only that they believe the incident to be a murder suicide. Several notes were left at the scene, but authorities have declined to release the contents.

Schaefer founded an organization called Family Concerns, Inc. in 1986. The group, a non-profit, focused on opposing gay marriage and abortion and fought for the display of the Ten Commandments in public places.

4 year old struck by stray bullet in church dies

A four-year-old boy who was struck by a stray bullet in his church in Decatur, GA has died of his injuries.

Marquel Peters was hit by a gunshot that came in through the roof of the church. His mother described the incident:

“I heard a little sound like a ‘pink.’ I heard him scream a little bit, so I looked around to hand him the game and that’s when I saw the blood,” she said. “I tried to pick him up and then, he was losing consciousness and he was just breaking and going down. It was so hard.”

The boy’s injuries were originally thought to be due to a piece of debris or other matter from the roof, but an autopsy later revealed the presence of a bullet in the child’s head. Marquel’s mother Nathalee Peters remains in shock over the sudden loss of her child and hopes the person responsible for her son’s death will come forward:

“It’s hard. He was my only child. He was only 4. He was a smart little boy, he was so sweet,” said his mother, Nathalee Peters.

The incident occurred around midnight on Friday at the Covington Drive Church Of God of Prophecy in Decatur.

Teen Jonathan Escobar told to “dress more manly” or leave school

16-year-old Jonathan Escobar left his home in Miami to live with his sister in Cobb County, GA, because his parents were unable to accept that he wears women’s clothing.

Shockingly, Georgia was less accepting of Escobar’s transvestitism. His older sister Veronica, with whom he lives, is surprised that her little brother lasted a mere three days in school before withdrawing due to administrative pressure. And how fierce does one have to be to out-crossdress Miami?

Anyone who has attended high school probably recalls the catch all “disruptive” rule for attire. I myself fell afoul of rules for disruptive clothing, once for wearing a souvenir t-shirt from Intercourse, PA. But Escobar’s situation is much broader and more serious in scope and raises the question of reasonable accommodation for LGBT teens. Escobar simply states that he doesn’t consider himself a cross-dresser, but rather that dressing the way he does is “who he is.” And at 16, it stands to reason that he may not know exactly where he lies on that spectrum.

Officials who had not witnessed Escobar’s attire believed he attended school in a dress and heels, but Escobar says that wasn’t the case:

Escobar said the assistant principal told him his style of dress had caused a fight between students at the school. Two days later, he withdrew himself from the Kennesaw school.

“You can’t wear clothing that causes a disruption,” said Jay Dillon, spokesman for Cobb County schools.

Dillon said he believed Escobar arrived at school in a dress and heels. But Escobar said he never wore a dress. He says he opted for “skinny” jeans all three days with flats.

Escobar was given the option of wearing “manly” clothes, or homeschooling. And he says that students harassed him, surrounding him in the cafeteria during his few days on campus. But a Facebook group called simply “Support Jonathan” had drawn 900 members, some planning on wearing pink shirts emblazoned with those words. Escobar wishes to return to school, but won’t compromise who he is:

“If I can’t express myself, I won’t go to school,” he said. “I want to get the message out there that because this is who I am, I can’t get an education.”

Something about distressed amusement parks visually arrests Americans unlike other images of areas in crisis.

Like Six Flags in Louisiana during and after Hurricane Katrina, Georgia’s Six Flags is submerged under murky brown floods, parts of the rollercoaster disappearing under the opaque brown waters. Storms “stretching from Tennessee to Georgia to North Carolina” have flooded the area, killing at least six residents and trapping many others in their homes. A two year old boy was swept from his father’s arms in the flooding, later found dead downstream.

A breached levee in Trion, GA caused the evacuation of over 1,500 people, and several areas are without power. Also, the flood waters are cold, causing hypothermia in many victims. Schools across the waterlogged state remain closed and no relief is in sight until the end of the week. Meteorologists blame the flooding on a phenomenon known as “training,” when an area is repeatedly battered by high-yield thunderstorms.

Georgia Supreme Court says Teachers can Legally have Sex with Students

The Supreme Court of Georgia has ruled that teachers can legally have sex with their students as long as those students are 16 or older, which is the minimum age of consent in the state.

“Generally speaking, it is not a crime in Georgia to have physical sexual contact with a willing participant who is 16 years of age or older.”

The ruling came about during an appeal of the conviction in the case of Melissa Lee Chase, a 30 year old teacher who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2007 for the sexual assault of a 16 year old girl at her school.

Now that the ruling has been made, pundits are expecting a flurry of appeals to other such cases in the state where teachers had sex with their students.

Georgia Governor Candidate admits sexual history includes mules, watermelon

Politics can bring out the strangest of people, but meet a guy who might be the strangest candidate yet: Neal Horsley.

Horsley is running for Georgia Governor as the candidate for the Creator’s Rights Party, a hard core, anti-abortion Christian party. Horsley believes among other things that Georgia should succeed from the United States, and that legal abortion is “slavery to satan.” However it’s his self admitted sexual history that offers even more surprise. Horsley admits to having sex with a mule.

In an interview with Alan Combes:

NH: “Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule.”
AC: “I’m not so sure that that is so.”
NH: “You didn’t grow up on a farm in Georgia, did you?”
AC: “Are you suggesting that everybody who grows up on a farm in Georgia has a mule as a girlfriend?”
NH: It has historically been the case. You people are so far removed from the reality… Welcome to domestic life on the farm…”
Colmes said he thought there were a lot of people in the audience who grew up on farms, are living on farms now, raising kids on farms and “and I don’t think they are dating Elsie right now. You know what I’m saying?”

Russia-Georgia Battle Spills onto Internet

The idea of battle is now taking a two-field approach: the actual real-world combat and the secondary war being fought online.

Georgian government web sites are being hit hard as the country feuds with Russian forces on the ground. Hackers — believed to be Russian — are targeting government and military web sites with almost non-stop denial-of-service attacks. The presidential web site and other official national sites have been so overwhelmed with hacker-created traffic that they’ve suffered hours of downtime. One site saw a photo of a government leader replaced with images showing him as a Nazi.

Similar cyberbattles have been waged in the region before. Russian hackers were blamed for a series of attacks on Lithuanian government web sites last month. The attacks came during the same time various groups were protesting a Lithuanian law that made it illegal to show Soviet symbols.
