Amnesty International has called for the arrest of George W. Bush when the former U.S. President visits Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia later this month. The not-for-profit organization believes Bush should be arrested and detained for human rights abuse.

Throughout his eight years as President, Bush authorized the use of waterboarding – which simulates the sensation of drowning – and other interrogation techniques that many human rights groups regard as torture. Matt Pollard, senior legal adviser to Amnesty, said:

“International law requires that there be no safe haven for those responsible for torture; Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia must seize this opportunity to fulfill their obligations and end the impunity George W. Bush has so far enjoyed.”

Bush, who visits the east African nations this week to raise awareness about cancer in Africa, has previously defended the use of waterboarding, saying it is key to avoid a repeat of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

A Bush arrest seems unlikely, however. For the past two years, former British prime minister Tony Blair has avoided arrests by citizens, despite campaigns such as this. The likes of Blair and Bush often travel with a large security escort (many attempted Blair arrests have been brushed off by these bodyguards), and the men are widely seen as untouchable.

The waterboarding debate was recently reignited in the GOP presidential debates, leading politicians across the spectrum (from McCain to Obama) to reinforce their opposition to the practice. Those who disagree waterboarding is torture are welcome to try it for themselves, as one pro-waterboarding radio jock did.

Michele Bachmann’s new book hit stores today, and it’s not only Democrats who get a bashing. The LA Times reports how Bachmann is happy to attack fellow Republicans, with George Bush the biggest target in her GOP target practice.

Bush gets heat from the GOP presidential candidate for the fact he backed the $700 billion Wall Street bailout in 2008. Bachmann accuses the ex-President and former Republican candidate John McCain of abandoning conservative, free-market principles when they supported the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. Ad she even manages to squeeze in the dirty ‘s’ word:

“The Bush administration … was embracing a kind of ‘bailout socialism. It was painful to find out John McCain too favored the TARP bailout. … Here was no ‘maverick’ moment. The same disappointing stance was taken by the Republican leadership in the House.”

How one equates a $700 million bailout of rich bankers with socialism is confusing me also, but I gave up trying to understand Bachmann many moons ago. She added:

“I knew there was no way I could vote for it, because I couldn’t find authority for it in the Constitution. As a constitutional conservative, I put principle over party.”

Condoleezza Rice has said former Libyan dictator/pipe dweller Moammar Gadhafi was “a monster” who “wasn’t totally sane.”

The former Secretary of State says she found Gadhafi “weird” – perhaps not that surprising considering a scrapbook of photos of Rice was found among his possessions. He also commissioned a song for Rice when she visited Libya in 2008. Its title? ‘Black Flower in the White House.’ Yep.

This juice comes from Rice’s new memoir, ‘No Higher Honor,’ which is due for release November 1st. In her book, Rice also states that an Arab Spring-style revolution would have been impossible in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, arguing that Hussein and Gadhafi were a different kettle of fish:

“It would be a mistake to make the leap of faith that this would somehow have worked in Iraq. Gadhafi [...] wasn’t Saddam Hussein in terms of his reach and capacity. I do think that an Arab spring in Iraq would have been unthinkable under Saddam Hussein.”

Rice also sticks up for George Bush, saying people had a misconception that the former President was “somehow not curious, didn’t ask difficult questions, was somehow reflexively ideological about how to respond to events.”

And she is reportedly keen that the Bush administration receives credit for encouraging Gadhafi to dismantle his nucelear and chemical weapons in 2003. She describes herself as “grateful we disarmed [Gadhafi] of his most dangerous weapons. Sitting in that bunker, I’m pretty sure he would have used them.”

Rice goes on to pass comment on Pakistan’s role in securing stability in Afghanistan, and describes how she now has more time now to play the piano. Yeah, the good stuff sort of runs out at that point.

When Lauren Bush walks down the aisle on Sunday, don’t expect to see former president George Bush. George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, will not be attending their granddaughter’s wedding.

The Daily Caller reports that George and Barbara won’t be attending the wedding because of the ceremony’s location. The Lauren Bush wedding is being held at a ranch in Colorado, and the Bush elders say the high altitude would be detrimental to their health.

But according to SheKnows.com, the altitude might not be the only reason that George and Barbara Bush won’t be attending. Lauren’s mother Sharron had a messy divorce with George W.’s brother, Neil. Apparently the two sides of the family haven’t reconciled yet.

The 27 year old bride is the niece of former president George W. Bush. A spokesman for the former president declined to comment on whether or not Bush had RSVP’d.

Lauren is marrying David Lauren, the son of fashion designer Ralph Lauren. So will she change her name to Lauren Lauren?

Lauren Bush told Harper’s Bazaar.

“I think it will be Lauren Bush-Lauren. That’s not final, but I think it’s nice to have the same name as your husband. I am sort of old-fashioned in that way.”

According to CBS, the Lauren Bush Wedding will be a black tie event, but with a western twist. The rehearsal dinner is planned for Saturday after a softball game, the wedding will be Sunday, and a rodeo will follow on Monday.

George H.W. Bush may not want to reconcile with the other side of the family, but how could he pass up a rodeo?

Just like its 16-bit forebear, the 2010 remake of basketball classic NBA Jam will feature a ton of hidden characters, including its share of politicians.

There’s an even spread of Democrats and Republicans, including Obama, Palin, Dubya Bush, Dick Cheney, and Joe Biden. Neatly, there’s also a return for Bill Clinton, who appeared in the first Jam game in 1994 (and yeah, Hilary’s there). All good, clean fun, and I’m loving the technique of using hi-res 2D photos for the heads:

NBA Jam arrived on Wii earlier this week, incidentally, and seems to be getting a good response. If you want to dunk Palin as Obama on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, those versions are out later this year.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black but is seems that George Bush doesn’t have that much regard for President Obama.

In an interview in GQ the ex-president’s former speechwriter, Matt Latimer, talks about his book – Speech Less: Tales of a White House Survivor – and some of the more interesting tidbits to do with George Bush. Among them was this one about Barack Obama

Bush Didn’t Have Much Regard for Barack Obama: Continuing his assessment of Obama, Bush remarked, "This guy has no clue, I promise you."

[….]

Another time, talking about candidate Barack Obama, Bush said, "This is a dangerous world, and this cat isn’t remotely qualified to handle it."

Source: Daily Intel – Ten Things We Learned About George W. Bush From His Ex-Speechwriter

As well he seem to think that Hillary Clinton was fat

Latimer writes: "’Wait till her fat keister is sitting at this desk,’ [Bush] once said (except he didn’t say ‘keister’)."

I’m betting that keister wasn’t the actual word to describe Hillary’s derrière.

On Tosh.0 last night, Daniel Tosh sent viewers on a NSFW Google scavenger hunt for pictures of Mrs. Kutcher, Demi Moore.

Coyly instructing viewers to Google permutations of “Demi Moore” and variations on George Bush, Tosh lead viewers to what appears to be a vintage nude pic of Moore from the terrifying good old days when Brazilian waxing was not de rigueur.

Is the pic real? Holy hell, I hope not. I used to do bikini waxing and that is a nightmare-inducing, 200% gratuity situation right there. While I won’t link to the pic in question, I will tell you if you follow Tosh’s instructions, it’s first in the Google results. And it is pretty alarming.

The Tosh.0 clip can be found here. With apologies to Demi Moore and Mr. Bush.

Somehow we think this is one area Barry O 44 won’t come close to matching.

“Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?” January 2000 campaign event in South Carolina.

“I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” September 2000 on Energy Policy.

“Throughout our history, the words of the Declaration have inspired immigrants from around the world to set sail to our shores. These immigrants have helped transform 13 small colonies into a great and growing nation of more than 300 people.” – July 2008

“There’s no doubt in my mind, not one doubt in my mind, that we will fail.” October 2001

And so, in my State of the — my State of the Union — or state — my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation — I asked Americans to give 4,000 years — 4,000 hours over the next-the rest of your life –of service to America. That’s what I asked — 4,000 hours.” -State of the Union Address: April 2002

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.” August 2004.

and for good measure: “And they have no disregard for human life.” July 2008.

“Make no mistake about it, I understand how tough it is, sir. I talk to families who die.” December 2006.

“It was not always a given that the United States and America would have a close relationship. After all, 60 years we were at war 60 years ago we were at war.” June 29, 2006, to the Japanese Prime Minister.

“These are big achievements for this country, and the people of Bulgaria ought to be proud of the achievements that they have achieved.” June 2007

“Mr Prime Minister, thank you for your introduction. Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit.” APEC Summit: September 2007.

“I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office.” June 2008.

“Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren’t able to practice their love with women all across this country.” September 2004.

“The fact that they purchased the machine meant somebody had to make the machine. And when somebody makes a machine, it means there’s jobs at the machine-making place.” May 2008

“This thaw – took a while to thaw, it’s going to take a while to unthaw.” October 2008.

There’s an old saying in Tennessee – I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee – that says, fool me once, shame on – shame on you. Fool me – you can’t get fooled again.” September 2002.

Although expected to retire to his ranch in Crawford Texas, US President George W Bush has instead decided to split his time between Dallas and the ranch with a new house.

The 8500 sq feet home, believed to be a 10141 Daria Place Preston Hollow has been recently renovated and includes 4 1/2 bathrooms, a cabana and detached servants quarters. The price was $2 million.

The President does not have occupancy of the house yet, so the White House declined to give further details. The family previously live in Dallas from December 1988 through January 1995.

Preston Hollow is regarded as the most elite suburb in Dallas, and is home to many of the cities richest and most prominent citizens.

Although not as outrageously funny as past Fey-as-Palin skits, last evening’s SNL Thursday Special intro is definitely worth a watch.

The highlights? The beginning is especially awesome: according to President George W. Bush, impersonated by Will Ferrell, it is on between “between two very qualified candidates: the hot lady and the Tiger Woods guy.” Poor Dubya: he’s been trying to do his part from the Oval Office (otherwise know as the “Bummer-Free Zone”) and endorse McCain in a super-public statement, but things keep getting mysteriously delayed. It’s a good thing that John McCain (Darrell Hammond) was found in the Adirondacks, or he wouldn’t have been able to come and pose for an extended photo op.

And of course, Tina Fey hit it out of the park with a fetching leg flash and a clever reference to Governor Sarah Palin’s impressive campaign wardrobe. (Who knew that pencil skirts and nehru collar jackets could run up such a hefty bill?) Even though the New York Times was getting skeptical about SNL taking this and running with it, I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

What’s your take on the newest installment to SNL’s Thursday Specials?

The lawsuit also includes President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Cheney’s chief of staff David Addington, former Attorney General and White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales and other individuals who ordered or participated in the alleged warrantless domestic surveillance.

According to EFF, the lawsuit, Jewel v. NSA, aims at ending the NSA’s dragnet surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans and holding accountable the government officials who illegally authorized it. Evidence in the case includes undisputed documents provided by former AT&T telecommunications technician Mark Klein showing AT&T has routed copies of Internet traffic to a secret room in San Francisco controlled by the NSA.
