Sunstorm Releases WW2 Beachhead Game for iPhone and iPod Touch

Indianapolis, Indiana – (Inquisitr Wire) – Sunstorm Interactive is excited to announce the launch of their second iPhone and iPod touch game, WW2 Beachhead. It is a fast-action arcade game with amazing graphics and dynamic war-time sound effects in which players have to defend their position against overwhelming enemies. The game is already available on the Apple App Store at a special introductory 50 discount ($0.99).

Buried in a beachhead bunker, players must demonstrate courage, quick reflexes and decision-making ability to stand their ground against the attacking enemy. They play as the last units remaining at the critical line of defense where they fight against ever growing hordes of soldiers, shattering tank fire, and strafing gunfire from fast moving fighter planes. Bonus crates parachute in bringing extra health or more ammo. Players must use precise aim and fast reflexes to suppress the attacking waves and win the chance to fight another day.
Players can choose among three weapons of destruction:

*AA Machine Gun – the primary gun for taking out the enemy. This gun has unlimited ammo and is easy to master.

*Artillery Cannon – firing explosive shells this gun is most effective against troops. One well-placed shot can wipe out a dozens soldiers.

*Rocket Propelled Grenade – the definitive tank killer but also effective on planes or hordes of soldiers.

Dragons to slay and dungeons to explore – on Facebook

I never played the original Dungeons & Dragons board game even though it was probably one of the biggest ’social’ games of its time but it seems that even this venerable classic has been bitten by the lure of the modern social world.

Now I don’t play games on Facebook but given the popularity of the platform and the long standing popularity of Dungeons & Dragons it would surprise me to see that Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeon & dragons: Tiny Adventures becomes a big hit.

According to Todd Jordan at The Broad Brush blog the adventures are short, include only your character and are scripted.

Adventures are solo, and players have no interaction with the plot other than choosing to take a potion or equip/unequip items. This is not like the select an option and that chooses your path adventures.

There is one element of cooperative play. Players can buff and heal friends’ characters. Buffs last for a few encounters. Healing can only be done between encounters.

Twitter weakens working memory, Total War may enhance it

It never fails that when something new comes along the scientists and researchers start sharpening their funding money in order to decide whether the shiny new thing is good or bad for us. When it comes to social media services like Twitter and Facebook it is no different with study after study being written to warn us about the good and bad.

The newest one is from Dr. Tracy Alloway, from the University of Stirling in Scotland, and suggests that things like Twitter and YouTube could be weakening out working memory. This is the memory that involves the ability to both remember information and to use it.

Apparently the instant nature of texting as we see with Twitter is not healthy for working memory.

”On Twitter you receive an endless stream of information, but it’s also very succinct,” said Dr Alloway. ”You don’t have to process that information.

”Your attention span is being reduced and you’re not engaging your brain and improving nerve connections.”

Interestingly enough though video games that involve planning and strategy, such as Total War, may also be good training for working memory. As well games like Sudoku and keeping up with friends on Facebook are good for stretching your working memory.

Video, Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum hit stores today after a rather pervasive TV marketing campaign.

Wikipedia has a breakdown of the game plot:

The game begins with Batman capturing the Joker after his latest plot and escorting him to Arkham Asylum for imprisonment. Due to the Joker’s recent attack on Gotham City’s Blackgate Prison, a large number of sane convicts have been transferred. Shortly after arriving, however, the Joker, with the help of Harley Quinn, frees all the inmates and locks down the Asylum with Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and much of the staff still inside.

After fighting some enemies on the first level, Batman makes his way to locate the Joker. Soon Batman learns that there is trouble in the pacification room. Batman learns that Zsasz has escaped and has captured one of the guards. Batman manages sneak up on Zsasz and take him down with a glide kick. Batman then gets a transmission from Harley Quinn that she has captured the wardenfor the Joker. Batman learns from Oracle that Joker has placed bombs all over Gotham threatening to detonate them if anyone enters Arkham. Batman contacts Oracle telling her that Joker has taken control of the cell block transfer corridor. Batman takes out the inmates there. At the intensive treatment lobby, Batman encounters Joker who unleashes an experimental human on him.

The game currently has a 91% positive rating on both Metacritic, and most other reviewers have it rated consistently at 9 out of 10 overall. If you’re not ready to plunk down between $50-70 on the game for XBox 360, PS3 or your PC, you can watch someone else playing it below:

Amaze friends with Jedi-like brainwave power

Want to be the really cool geek on the block with incredible Jedi-like mental powers?

Well now you can thanks to Uncle Milton Industries’ new toy called The Force Trainer that is hitting the market this month. The game uses a wireless headset which reads your brainwave activity and then converts it in actual physical action. Apparently if you focus well enough you can make the ping-pong looking ball, or as the company calls it – the training sphere, rise in the tower.

"When you concentrate, it activates the training remote," says Frank Adler of toymaker Uncle Milton Industries, which is creating the Trainer. "There is a flow of air that will move the (ball). You can actually feel like you are in a zone."

Star Wars sound effects and audio clips emitted from the base unit "cue you in to progress to the next level (from Padawan to Jedi) or when to move the sphere up or down to keep challenging yourself," Adler says.

Then I may have just found the perfect playground for you to fire up in your browser and relive some original Doom glory. Not only that but you can also switch over to two other classics from the iD collection – Heretic and Hexen. Doom may have gotten most of the press back in the day but both Hexen and Heretic are just as good.

USB flash drives come in all kinds of strange configurations whether it be a rubber chicken to cup warmers. If you are a gamer and looking to pick up a new Resident Evil 5 for Xbox 360 bundle you could find yourself as one of the lucky owners of a USB chainsaw. The idea being I guess that you can carry around your zombie killing fetish with you and illicit all kinds of strange stares.

Of course not everyone will want to fork over the money for the Xbox bundle just to be able to wave this miniature chainsaw around in the air. For those people some scouring of eBay might be in order as some of these have been spotted with a price tag of $22.

Guitar Hero World Tour Cheats

If you were lucky enough to be given Guitar Hero World Tour as a gift this Christmas, or have access to someone who was (in my case Santa purchased it for my son) you’ll be wanting to know the Guitar Hero Qorld tour cheats.

I’ve tested some of these on the Wii successfully, but not had a chance to test all of them. They appear to be the same for the Wii, PS3 and XBox 360, but I can’t vouch personally for the other platforms.

Get Revenue-Generating Games For Your Blog

There’s a new way for you to add revenue-building NBC-based games onto your blog or Web site. Social game developer King has joined forces with online games network Mochi Media to expand its new ad-driven game system for Web publishers. The whole thing is available free of charge.

Mochi Media has already built a revenue-based game system for sites to use. Anyone can create an account and start embedding its ad-supported games. Publishers then receive a portion of the ad revenues based on the plays on their pages. With the King addition, dozens of titles such as “The Biggest Loser,” “Deal or No Deal,” and “1vs100″ are being added into its catalog.

King operates MyGame.com and powers many of the games at Yahoo Games. It also has partnerships with NBC, hence the official game show-based titles.

As for Mochi Media, it bills itself as the “largest online games advertising network.” Aside from King’s titles, it has thousands of titles available for publishers and continues to accept submissions from developers as well.

Yahoo Rolls Out Open Search, In-Game Ads

You’ve gotta hand it to ‘em: The folks at Yahoo aren’t giving up quietly. Amidst endless news of the company’s downfall, the struggling search engine has unveiled two new features to try to attract users and make money.

First up: a new customizable search platform called Yahoo Search BOSS, or Build Your Own Search Service. The idea, announced just after midnight ET, lets anyone use Yahoo’s search infrastructure to create a localized search function with any set of specifications. The end-user controls both the appearance and the results, with the built-in ability to process Yahoo’s output and re-rank it any way you’d like. Some examples of possible uses provided include graphical presentations that show small images of web sites next to the results, or social searches that pull specific data from a person’s profile to deliver interest-relevant results.

The API and mash-up tools are already available on Yahoo’s Developer Network site. Yahoo plans to eventually offer Yahoo search advertising and “potentially other models” — hmm — for developers to earn money by having the search utility on their sites.

Speaking of advertising, Yahoo’s second announcement is the launch of ad-supported downloadable games on its Yahoo Games service. More than 400 titles are expected to be made available by the year’s end, Yahoo said this morning. The ads will be built-in as pre-roll and post-roll — but also as mid-roll, meaning players will see the spots while engaged in the game. Yahoo will offer the option to get ad-free versions for a fee.

New Service Aims to Attract Gamers

AOL has teamed up with Weblogs, Inc. to launch a new PC and Mac game service focused on free downloads.

BigDownload.com features game downloads and demos along with reviews, news, and industry analysis. Weblogs, Inc. provides the reviews and other text-based content while AOL Games delivers the software offerings.

The service won’t require any sign-up process. AOL says there are also no plans to initiate fees or subscriptions.

The site already looks to have a fairly wide offering of downloads and game-based reading. Right now, the top games being grabbed are a SPORE Creature Creator demo and a Diablo II demo (for Windows and Mac). The latest articles include a look at the role of story in video games and a preview of Quantum of Solace, the upcoming Bond game by Activision.
