As the election season continues to heat up with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich launching various attacks against one another it turns out that many of their ads are ending up on the Weather Channel and Food Network, the cable stations of choice for Republicans according to a recent study.

First reported in the New York Times the study has found that those networks along with HGTV and the History Channel are watched regularly by 36% of GOP voters in the state of Florida.

The shift to unconventional market viewership has led political leaders to more readily target those channels.

As Mitt Romney’s media strategic points out:

“You need to have your ads more spread out into other programming so you’re not just lumped into the political segment of a commercial break.”

Interestingly enough Romney’s campaign has also found that their key demographics for voting purposes tend to like the shows CSI, The Mentalist, and Criminal Minds all of which have received special consideration on behalf of the Mitt Romney GOP presidential primary campaign.

The reasoning for the right leaning tendencies of those networks? One suggestions is that they tend to air in “HDTV which attracts small-business owners who usually lean right.”

I disagree with that last point because everything airs in HDTV these days.

Why do you think Republicans love the Weather Channel so much?

Paula Deen is swinging back at her critics by taking her fellow celebrity cooks to task. Deen, who admitted that she had Type-2 Diabetes and has had so for three years, says she has gotten zero support from any of the food network chefs.

A top food publicist told the Huffington Post,

“The amount of chefs that would have come forward with public statements of support and sympathy would have been overwhelming if it wasn’t for the fact that Paula hid her diagnosis for three years. To only tell the truth when you have locked in a paid spokesperson deal for a non-insulin medication is just too toxic for anyone to want to be involved with.”

I am not shocked also at the lack of support. Deen makes a living out of teaching people how to cook the most fattening and unhealthy food on the planet. For three years now she promoted recipes while suffering from a disease not only caused from those type of recipes but that would kill her if she continued to eat that way. Then all of a sudden a deal emerges where she will be making millions and she is the new face of Diabetes?

Her celebrity chef friends, I am quite sure, wish her quite well on this new journey she will have fighting this disease. She will have to make better choices, eat better and try to find ways to avoid letting her disease kill her. But to now ask for support for a course of action that seems from the outside to be so selfish and self serving is asking a lot.

Do you think Paula Deen deserves support for this new course of action?

After I posted my extensive guide to turkey support outreach in the internet age and how not to die in a fire deep-frying a turkey, another quick Thanksgiving reference came to my attention.

I mentioned the Butterball helpline (1-800-Butterball, which on a cell phone will have to be 1-800-but-terb) but if you don’t want to drop the phone in vat of boiling gravy while trying to hold for help- did you know you can get turkey help on Twitter?

Avid tweeters hosting Thanksgiving this year may want to follow and converse with @Butterball on Twitter. The helpful person or persons manning the customer service account have been tweeting turkey advice all morning to panicked Twitter users in need of a helping tweet:

As technology advances, sometimes it’s the little things that remind us what a pain in the ass some tasks used to be before the internet.

Roasting your first (or 50th) Thanksgiving turkey used to be a bit of a hassle, especially because- let’s face it- turkey kind of sucks and no one ever eats it besides on Thanksgiving unless they’re in Frontierworld in Disneyworld or on some kind of a sad, tasteless diet. No one knows how to thaw a turkey or what turkey cooking times are, much less how to brine a turkey so it doesn’t taste as much like dry sponge.

Nowadays, resources to help you cook your turkey without setting the kitchen on fire or overcooking the outer parts while giving the whole family salmonella abound. Hands down, the best one-stop shop for turkey morons is on Butterball’s site.

Butterball’s Tips section has a handy calculators page to provide specific information based on the amount of guests you’re hosting and tells you what size turkey you’ll need. And based on whether you’re defrosting it in the fridge or in cold water (you’d better get cracking either way), the site lets you know exactly how long that will take.

Interestingly, the site still says it’s okay to stuff a turkey, and even tells you how to brine a turkey- although that takes at least six hours. If you’re too much of a pretentious foodie to listen to Butterball and you enjoy building things before shoving food into your face, you can always check out Alton Brown’s turkey recipe.

Lastly, if you’re too overwhelmed and effing up Thanksgiving for the whole family, bear in mind you can call a real live human at 1-800-BUTTERBALL (1-800-288-8372).
