Arthur Cutillo, 13 Other Hedge Fund Employees Arrested For Insider Trading

14 hedge fund employees, including lawyers and various investors were arrested today by Federal prosecutors this week stemming from various criminal complaints filed against billionaire hedge fund manager Raj Rajarathnam.

Included in those arrests was Arthur J. Cutillo, a lawyer for the firm Ropes & Gray who is expected of offering tips of upcoming takeovers that his firm had been working on. Those tips according to the NYT:

[W]ere then passed among a group of lawyers and traders who, in the hopes of avoiding detection, used prepaid cellphones, referred to stocks by fake names and met in cars. Some members of the ring were paid off in cash, according to the complaint.

Mr. Rajaratnam was arrested last month for insider trading and is in the process of returning investor money.

Seriously? Does the SEC ever really do their job or do they just smile all pretty for the cameras once they arrive years too late.

Stewart David Nozette Arrested For Spying

Stewart David Nozette, a Maryland scientist who previously worked for the White House and the US Defense Department has been arrested after attempting to pass along classified information to a person he believed was an Israeli spy.

Nozette was arrested in an FBI sting where an FBI officer posed as the Israeli agent. It is not alleged by the agency that the Government of Israel was involved in any wrong doing in the case.

The Justice Department affidavit said Nozette received a telephone call from an individual purporting to be an Israeli intelligence officer (an undercover FBI agent) September 3. Nozette met with the agent later that day then in a subsequent meeting discussed his willingness to work for Israeli intelligence. Nozette is alleged to have informed the agent that he had, in the past, held top security clearances and had access to U.S. satellite information, and that he would be willing to answer questions about this information in exchange for money. After several additional meetings, including information being exchanged for cash, the arrest was made.

Nozette previously worked for the Energy Department, The Defense Department , NASA and the National Space Council in the president’s office in 1989 and 1990.

Mexican Police Capture FBI “Top 10″ Fugitive Jorge Alberto Lopez-Orozco

Mexico City, Mexico (AHN) – Authorities in Mexico have reportedly apprehended Jorge Alberto Lopez-Orozco, one of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) “Top 10″ most wanted fugitives.

Lopez-Orozco is wanted for allegedly shooting three people in Elmore County, Idaho. With ties to San Jose, California and Mexico, American authorities believe he fled south to escape arrest and trial.

According to the FBI, the charred remains of a woman and two children, age two and four, were found in a vehicle in Idaho in 2002. Each victim was shot in the chest or head before their bodies were burned.

There was a $100,000 reward offered for his capture, and he was considered armed and dangerous.

FBI: Records On Cronkite Destroyed In 2007

Washington, D.C. (AHN) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation has admitted destroying records of the late Walter Cronkite in October 2007 when the CBS News anchorman was still alive but ailing.

The admission was in response to a request by USA Today to obtain the records under the Freedom of Information Act after Cronkite died in July at the age of 92.

The agency did not say what records it had on Cronkite and why these were destroyed. The records may not be about FBI’s investigation of Cronkite but rather letters complaining of extortion and requesting for investigation, according to Scott Hodes, a former top lawyer in the FBI’s records office.

The FBI cited a policy of keeping and destroying records since 1981.

Ever wonder how the FBI identifies pedophiles? The Inquisitr has uncovered a document published internally by the FBI on different symbols used by pedophiles to discreetly identify themselves to each other, right down to their preferences of what type of kids they like – whether it’s boys, girls or just children in general.

This document, circulated in 2007, is marked ‘Law Enforcement Sensitive’. We still haven’t been able to determine exactly what that means, but we’re taking a chance and publishing portions of the document as a service to our readers who have children and are concerned about their safety and well-being. For this reason, we’re only showing you the parts of the document.

Below you’ll find 3 screenshots taken of the afformentioned document. The first shows the date, FBI seal and an explanation paragraph of what to look for.

The second portion below shows the symbols, what they mean, and various ways of displaying the symbols, like on rings, pendants and coins or printed on literature.

The third below shows more symbols used by pedophiles.

This post is for information purposes only and to provide you, our readers with knowledge about what goes on around you on a day to day basis that you may not have known otherwise.

If the FBI and law enforcement are keeping an eye out for the above, there’s no reason why parents, teachers, child care workers or anyone entrusted with the care and supervision of a child shouldn’t know of, and be keeping an eye out for it as well.

FBI Agents Nab Top Fugitive In Wyoming

Denver, CO (AHN) – FBI agents and Wyoming Game and Fish officers on Thursday arrested a man who is in the list of top 10 fugitives ending his 15 years of hiding.

Edward Eugene Harper, 63, surrendered peacefully to arresting officers in southern Wyoming’s Washakie County.

Harper is wanted for molestation and sexual battery of two girls aged 3 and 8 in Mississippi in 1994.

Harper was indicted in April 1994 but did not appear in a scheduled court hearing prompting authorities to issue an arrest warrant in October that year.

Authorities failed to find him for years and the FBI put him in its list of Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives in November.

FBI, U.S. Marshals hit by mystery virus

According to a post over at the cnet Security blog it appears that the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service was hit by some sort of computer virus on Thursday of last week. A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service said that they had disconnected from the Justice Department network asa precaution. The FBI on the other hand would only say it was experiencing similar issues.

"We too are evaluating a network issue on our external, unclassified network that’s affecting several government agencies," FBI spokesman Mike Kortan told the AP.

The type of virus and where it originated from are unknown but both agencies have shut down access to the Internet and their e-mail until they had finished evaluating the situation.

Clicking that link could land you in jail

The FBI, taking lessons from Dateline’s To Catch A Predator, have been hanging out in some pretty bad neighborhoods on the web lately. While there they are spreading around some hyperlinks that supposedly will lead you to videos of minors having sex. Only thing is they are actually leading to a government server and garbage files. Then they are going out and arresting anyone who happens to have clicked on them.

This is according to a post over at CNET News.com who has been reviewing the legal documents surrounding this new method of entrapment (choice of word is mine). It seems as well that the courts so far don’t seem to have any problem with this new police method that has been used recently in Pennsylvania, New York and Nevada.

The most recent victim; and in my opinion anyone entrapped this way is a victim, was a doctoral student at Temple University by the name of Roderick Vosburgh.

Federal agents knocked on the door around 7 a.m., falsely claiming they wanted to talk to Vosburgh about his car. Once he opened the door, they threw him to the ground outside his house and handcuffed him.

Vosburgh was charged with violating federal law, which criminalizes "attempts" to download child pornography with up to 10 years in prison. Last November, a jury found Vosburgh guilty on that count, and a sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 22, at which point Vosburgh could face three to four years in prison.

As Declan McCullagh points out in his post the implications of this type of FBI hyperlink-enticement technique are sweeping

Using the same logic and legal arguments, federal agents could send unsolicited e-mail messages to millions of Americans advertising illegal narcotics or child pornography–and raid people who click on the links embedded in the spam messages. The bureau could register the "unlawfulimages.com" domain name and prosecute intentional visitors. And so on.

I’m the first person who would be willing to take any pedophile out back and beat the ever living snot out of them and then leave them for the mother’s of the children they have abuse to finish off; but this newest technique smacks of outright entrapment. Anyone with even a modicum of computer experience will tell you how easy it is to manipulate hyper-links – hell spammers have been doing it for years. The number of innocent people who are snagged everyday by these types of links is a testament to how bad of an idea this is.

Talk about the ultimate Rickrolling – only this could land you in jail for years.

Screw the telcos help – government can find your cell phone by itself

Technology is a wonderful thing but it is also the way that our rights can be infringed upon without us sometimes even knowing. For many years the U.S. government agency; the FBI has had a technology called triggerfish. With this technology and in the beginning the help of telecommunication companies the FBI has been able to track cell phones. It was this technology which helped them catch Kevin Mitnick in the 1990’s but an importance change has happened between then and now.

According to documents gained from the Department of Justice by the ACLU under the Freedom of Information Act it appears that the triggerfish technology has advanced to the point that the FBI can track cell phone all by their themselves – no help from the telcos needed. An earlier EFF FOIA lawsuit turned up documents detailing how a little-known FBI telephone intercept unit had developed triggerfish technology that agents use to monitor the physical movements of surveillance targets. Back then it seemed the process required assistance from the provider. But the new documents plainly say that triggerfish surveillance can be done without provider assistance, as at the top of page 18 in this document (PDF): “This can be done without the user knowing about it, and without involving the cell phone provider.”

The way this works is also outlined in the post

The FBI now has what is called “triggerfish” technology — a cell site simulator that forces cell phones in the area to register its phone number, serial number and location — allowing it to track cell phones on its own.

That might be the light version but if the comments on Bruce Shneier’s post about the story are any indication much of the detailed information of how this technology works is easily found with a little bit of searching. One commenter even called it all old news.

Well it might be old news but it still stinks to high heaven.
