Dr. Eugenia Calle Murder Investigation

Police say Eugenia Calle’s fiance found her body in their penthouse apartment as much as 16 hours after she had been killed, according to reports by Atlanta-area TV stations. Officers indicate there were “some signs of a struggle” and that Calle died of “blunt force trauma” to the head.

Eugenia Calle Murder Arrest

Early Thursday morning, officers found and arrested a man named Jamal Thompson. Investigators believe Thompson pretended to be interested in buying Calle’s condo, located in the Aqua building on 10th Street near West Peachtree, to get inside. They say his motive for the murder was robbery. Surveillance video taken from the building helped identify him as a suspect.

Dr. Eugenia Calle, 57, had been the managing director of analytic epidemiology at the American Cancer Society until her retirement just last month. She also served as an adjunct professor of epidemiology at Emory University. Calle is credited with making “important strides” within cancer research, including the discovery of a link between cancer and obesity.
