Poor Lindsay Lohan.

In becoming an unwitting poster child for downward spirals of shame, stories have abounded on gossip blogs and in celebrity news about Lohan’s seemingly never-ending series of public embarrassments. The latest schadenfraude in the Lohan saga involves a Carvel “black card” for free ice cream, a police fracas at one of the ice cream retailers locations and a truly sad press release issued by the company about the Lohan family’s “abuse” of the privilege. Having your card declined is one thing, having your free ice cream card snipped in half at the checkout is infinitely more mortifying.

Carvel must feel that Lohan is an acceptable target at this point, because the following “news release” was posted to their press relations page:

ATLANTA, GA (June 17, 2010) – As part of Carvel’s 75th Anniversary celebration last year, we issued 75 Black Cards to celebrities.  These cards were issued in the celebrity’s name and require the card holder to be present at the time of use. Many celebrities have enjoyed their cards at our Carvel Ice Cream shoppes and have shared their excitement with being included in the celebration.

Unfortunately, the Lohan family has been abusing the card.   While the card was issued in Lindsay and Ali’s names only, their extended family has repeatedly used the card without either present.   At first, we graciously honored their requests while explaining that the Black Card was not a carte blanche for unlimited Carvel Ice Cream for the extended Lohan family and friends.  After more than six months of numerous and large orders for ice cream, we finally had to cut off the card and take it back.

Dina Lohan reacted badly and called the police to have her card returned.  The police responded and did return the card to Dina with instructions not to use it again.

This is an unfortunate situation where certain people feel entitled to use a celebrity’s name for their own purposes.  We regret that the Lohan family is upset and hope this matter is put behind us quickly.

An embarrassing single-word typo has caused the recall in Australia of a cookbook called the “Pasta Bible.”

A recipe for spelt tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto is supposed to call for “freshly ground black pepper.” Unfortunately, the book includes spelt tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto seasoned with “freshly ground black people.” Penguin Group Australia’s head, Bob Sessions, said the proofreader should have picked up the error but that it was a “silly mistake.” Sessions explains:

“We’re mortified that this has become an issue of any kind and why anyone would be offended, we don’t know… We’ve said to bookstores that if anyone is small-minded enough to complain about this … silly mistake, we will happily replace (the book) for them.”

Sessions also says:

“It’s called the Pasta Bible, almost every recipe has ground black pepper in it, mostly in the same place [on each page]. In one particular recipe [a] misprint occurs which obviously came from a spell checker. When it comes to the proofreader, of course they should have picked it up, but proofreading a cookbook is an extremely difficult task. I find that quite forgivable.”

7,000 of the books now need to be reprinted, at a cost of about $18,500 USD. While unsold copies will be returned to the publisher, calling back copies that have already been sold would be “extremely hard” according to Sessions.

Tony Arambula is suing the police department in Phoenix, AZ for nearly $5.8m after an officer accidentally shot him, twice.

Officer Brian Lilly fired a total of four rounds at Arambula while responding to reports of an intruder in the Arambula home. The Phoenix PD released a statement yesterday acknowledging the mishap on September 17th of last year:

“…after entering the residence, one of the officers mistakenly shot the armed home owner.”

The press release goes on to say that the “department has been honest and forthright from the very onset of this incident. No attempt has been made to conceal the truth or the facts surrounding it.”

On the night of the shooting, Arambula and his wife say that they placed a 911 call, reporting that Arambula had cornered the intruder and was holding him at gunpoint. When officers arrived, his wife Lesley described the situation as such. Police entered and announced themselves, and Arambula was immediately shot in the back by Lilly. When he fell, he was shot at three more times and hit once again, in the arm. Lilly admitted to firing without warning.

Arambula says that he did everything he was supposed to in the situation:

“I would have loved if they would have told me to get on the floor and drop to my knees,” Arambula said. “To not have given me any opportunity to not get shot, it’s confusing. I pray that this never happens to another family.”
