Former Hannah Montana co-star Mitchel Musso was arrested in Burbank, CA in October when a routine traffic stop revealed that the Disney Star was intoxicated and now he has struck a plea deal with prosecutors.

The 20-year-old actor has pled no content to one count of driving with a blood alcohol content over .08 and in exchange for that plea he will receive 36 months informal probation and will be ordered to pay a hefty fine and complete alcohol education classes.

In a statement following his plea deal Musso released the following statement:

“I appreciate the court allowing me to resolve my case in the manner it did today. In becoming an adult, I have learned first hand that stepping up and taking responsibility is the best way to move forward.”

He adds:

“I am especially thankful to my family and fans for their unwavering support and encouragement. I am glad to now put this in the past.”

In the meantime Miley Cyrus is partying it up like a rock star, licking penis cakes and partying with her friends. My how the Hannah Montana crew has matured with age.

Walt Disney Co and Univision Communications are currently engaged in talks that would bring a new English language 24-hour cable news channel aimed at a Hispanic audience.

The inside source that revealed the talks to Reuters has not revealed specifics but has cautioned that the deal is far from completed and could still unravel at any time.

The move is seen as a way for the newspaper to capture an ever changing demographic of U.S. Hispanic viewers and to reach a growing number of English specific people of Hispanic origins.

Operated as a joint venture representatives from Disney and Univision have not denied talks while refusing to comment on talks regarding the partnership.

If a deal is reached the channel would start broadcasting before the Presidential elections in November and the project would be based out of Miami, Florida.

The power move would also give Disney more control of the news market where they already own and operate ABC broadcast network which includes ABC News and sports news behemoth ESPN.

Univision also brings plenty of news reporting experience to the fold as a Spanish-language provider of television and radio broadcasts.

The newspaper says the family of the late Roy Disney, nephew of Walt, have joined forces with investment banker Stanley Gold to purchase the team for what could be as much as $1.6 billion.

That’s the figure being asked for by Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, who needs funds due to financial problems brought on by his publicly messy and very costly divorce from Jamie McCourt – indeed, the split is estimated to be the most expensive in Californian history.

A source close to the Diney and Gold bid leaked news of the plans to the Times, claiming that it would be Roy Disney’s family who would own the Dodgers, rather than the Walt Disney Company. The mole stated:

“They would guard the Dodger name the way they guard the Disney name.”

Disney has dabbled in baseball before – the company owned the 2002 World Series-winning Anaheim Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels) from 1996 to 2003. When Disney sold up, it signaled the beginning of the end of Disney’s involvement in professional sports.

Gold also has a past with Disney – he served on the Disney board twice, and was an ally of Roy Disney when chief executive Michael Eisner was squeezed out of the company in 2005.

Disney are far from the only party said to be interested in the Dodgers, but they’re probably the most intriguing. What do you Dodgers fans make of this news?

Comcast XFinity TV and Disney-ABC customers will be gaining access to much more content, as the two companies have entered into a very wide-ranging deal.

Notable for being Disney-ABC’s first authentication deal, the agreement covers more than 70 channels under that particular corporate umbrella. It also bears mentioning that at this point, ten years is a very, very long commitment in streaming, at a time when many companies feel that the value of such deals might still be very fluid and subject to large fluctuations.

In addition to local affiliates and some HD versions of many of the channels, the deal will allow customers to view content from ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN 3D, ESPN GamePlan, ESPN FullCourt and ESPN3 across several types of devices.

Both sides issued statements trumpeting the massive deal, and Comcast’s president and CEO Neil Smit said:

“We are very pleased to have reached this unprecedented and innovative, long-term agreement with Disney which embraces the future of entertainment and allows Comcast to continue to bring our vision of TV Everywhere to Xfinity customers whether at home or on the go.”

Smit added:

“Comcast was the first video provider to create technology that enabled us to deliver content to customers where and when they want it across any viewing experience.”

Co-chair of Disney, Anne Sweeney, commented:

“This landmark deal is a great example of what can be achieved when programmers and distributors collaborate and innovate together to meet the ever-evolving needs of consumers and enhance the viewing experience.”

Demi Lovato left the popular children’s show Sonny With A Chance after a long tough batter with anorexia and now she’s angry with Disney after the show Shake It Up made a joke about the eating disorder.

On the show one of the characters recently said:

“I could just eat you up. Well, if I ate.”

Taking to Twitter immediately following the job Lovato tweeted:

“I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an eating disorder, and yet still make joke about that very disease.”

She then added:

“Eating disorders are not something to joke about.”

This isn’t the first time Disney has cracked an anorexia show, the Sonny With A Chance spinoff So Random also made fun of the disorder.

Following Lovato’s tweets the Disney Channel responded by tweeting

“We hear you and are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible and re-evaluating them. It’s never our intention to make light of eating disorders!”

Most princesses in the Disney kingdom are, well, princesses. They are concerned with things like dresses and jewelry and balls and finding Prince Charming. Merida, the main character in Pixar’s Brave, breaks the royal mold.

Mark Andrews, who co-directed Brave, calls Merida the anti-princess. Andrews told My San Antonio:

“She isn’t your typical princess. She’s your anti-princess.  She doesn’t wear nice clothes except in a couple of scenes when her strict mom, Queen Elinor, makes her do it for special functions. She’s an active and action-oriented person. She wants to get out in the outdoors of the Highlands, escaping from castle life and exploring the woods.”

Andrews isn’t the only one who thinks that Princess Merida sticks out like a sore thumb when lined up alongside with Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, and Princess Jasmine.  Kelly Macdonald, who voices Princess Merida, found it very amusing that the red haired princesses will one day be a character at Disney World.

“I just thought, ‘My goodness! There’s eventually going to be a Merida doing her thing (at Disney World). The people that they cast to be the characters and wear the costumes at Disneyland have to do the accent, so somebody at Disneyland is going to be doing me. Some American girl will have to do my accent. It kind of blows my mind, really.”

Hannah Montana star Mitchel Musso may have portrayed a squeaky clean image as Oliver Oken on the hit series but in real life the actor has been arrested for driving drunk down the street of Burbank, California.

The 20-year-old underage drinker was pulled over at approximately 3:45 AM at an unrelated traffic accident after police told him to slow down and he failed to heed their warning.

The arresting officer says they approached the actors 2007 Mercedes-Benz and smelled the “strong odor of alcohol” on his breath.

After allegedly failing a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer Musso was arrested and booked into custody at the Burbank Police Station where he was held on $5,000 bail. Musso was released several hours after being booked.

Mitchel Musso current stars in the Disney shows Pair of Kings and PrankStars. 

Disney reps are not currently commenting on the actors DUI, then again they have always been good at image control, just look at what they did to keep Hannah Montana going after Miley’s various transgressions.

Back in August of this year, the fate of Disney’s upcoming big-budget movie starring Johnny Depp, The Lone Ranger, was uncertain. Once the budget soared up to the $250 million range, Disney had to put a stop to production in order to trim the hefty budget down to $215 million.

After doing a few cuts here and there to get the budget down, Disney has given the green light for the project to go back into production, Disney announced today. Originally scheduled for a December 21, 2012 release, it’s now said to be due out on May 31, 2013.

Depp and director Gore Verbinski told MTV News that the two were aware that the Lone Ranger‘s $250 million budget was going to be a problem from the start.

“We knew that the budget was going to be huge initially, and we also knew that it was going to be shut down for a while, and it was kind of like we patiently wait — we shave a little bit here, we do a little bit there, they fix it,” he said.

To get the budget down to agreeable levels for Disney, Depp, Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer had to take a pay cut. Not only that, Disney had to scrap a few CGI-heavy scenes, and an entire train sequence had to be removed.

Depp, who will be playing Tonto in the film, said that he had high hopes that the film would be able to move forward, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

“I like the character,” he said. “I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny. But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick — which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood, the Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don’t see Tonto that way at all. So it’s an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans.”

If you’re a fan of James Cameron’s box-office smash hit Avatar you’ll soon be able to take a ride on themed attractions from the movie at various Walt Disney Resort locations.

The Hollywood Reporter says the rides will arrive by 2013 and will be launched at Disney Parks around the world.

The move comes after Disney had launched a popular Back to the Future theme in the 80′s and 90′s (now defunct) and follows the highly successful launch of the “Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Universal Orlando.

There’s even better news for Cameron fans, he’ll be consulting Disney on the project, ensuring the experience is as true as possible. According to THR:

“The first themed ‘land’ will be built at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with construction expected to start by 2013. The first Avatar attraction will be inside the Animal Kingdom park. Disney said this was chosen because “with its emphasis on living in harmony with nature, Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the Avatar stories, which share the same philosophy.”

Two years later (2015) Cameron will release two new editions to the Avatar movie series, just in time for fans of the movie to take in the park and beg for more Avatar in theaters.

The Walt Disney announced that its animated feature film with Pixars “Cars 2” has already earned $189 million in the U.S. since its first showing on June 24, 2011, making it the top grosser among this year’s animated features.

Combined with international earnings, “Cars 2″ has now grossed $548 million to date, making it the 16th highest grossing animated film in global cinematic history. The film has also surpassed the worldwide box-office totals of other Disney/Pixar hits such as “Monsters, Inc.” and “WALL-E.”

“Cars 2″ is the 12th feature-length animated film from Pixar Animation Studios. Its first 11 have earned $6.5 billion at the global box office.

The reported earnings of “Cars 2″ is in line with the movie review by Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine when he said:

“This is the real fast and furious and it’s even better than before. The sequel is a tree-burning burst of action and fun with a beating heart under its hood. You can bet “Cars 2″ will rev your engines.”

The Hollywood Post Alliance nominated “Cars” in two categories: Outstanding Editing-Feature Film (Stephen Schaffer, A.C.E./Pixar Animation Studios) and Outstanding Sound-Feature Film (Tom Myers, Michael Semanick and Michael Silvers/Skywalker Sound).

Microsoft is revving up to sell Windows 8 and to prepare for that launch the company has hired Jay Victor, a former brand strategy director for Disney who will take on the same role at his new company.

Victor will develop and market all major brands at Microsoft including Windows, Xbox, Office, and Bing, although what that marketing will entail is yet to be outlined.

The OS is expected to arrive in April and company CEO Steve Ballmer has called the product Microsoft’s “biggest gamble yet” which explains why they would bring on an experienced worker with a great track record for selling consumer-facing ads.

Victor will take over for Mich Mathews who announced in the spring that she was retiring as Microsoft’s Central Marketing Group head.

Popular children’s gaming site Club Penguin went down on Monday after it was revealed that The Walt Disney Company, owners of the site, failed to renew the company’s URL.

The sites domain expired one week ago (June 13) and was taken offline for a short period of time on Monday until Disney officials realized what had occurred.

For a short period of time some of the sites 12 million users were not able to log onto Club Penguin although Disney fixed the issue and most users are back online and playing the MMORG once again.

Perhaps it’s just my business sense, but if I was a Disney executive and I paid upwards of $700 million ($350 million cash and $350 million in performance incentives) for a website in 2007, I would have more than likely registered the domain for the next 100 years, a simple $1000 investment would have ensured my $700 million investment didn’t piss off my customers for such a stupid reason.

Selena Gomez has been admitted to the hospital since Thursday and now it has been revealed that doctors have been testing her blood pressure for signs of problems.

Gomez was admitted to the hospital after she finished a taping of The Tonight Show and then began to complain about nausea and suffering from a migraine headache.

Doctors at this time have not been able to determine what is wrong with the Disney star, however they are continuing to keep her under constant observation.

One rumor was that the young star is pregnant, a rumor that her reps and family are adamantly denying at this time.

Gomez’s rep shortly after the star was admitted to the hospital on Thursday said she was “on the mend” but that doctor’s had no idea what was wrong with her.

As expected Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took the top spot at the box office this weekend earning $90 million in domestic sales.

The Johnny Depp led movie also took in an additional $256.3 million overseas, a record breaking international release that helped the $250 million movie bring in $346.4 million worldwide, making the movie the fourth biggest worldwide opening weekend flick of all time.

While the numbers are impressive Disney was projecting closer to $100 million in the U.S. and the movie was beat out by the last two Pirates movies which included $135.6 million for Dead Man’s Chest and $114.7 million for At World’s End.

Trailing far behind was last weeks opener Bridesmaids which took in $21.1 million for a total take of $58.9 million, not bad for a movie that only cost $32.5 million to produce.

Also holding strong was Thor which despite less than the movies $150 million budget being made back domestically has managed to earn $383 million worldwide.

Disney star Demi Lovato is leaving her hit show Sonny with a Chance to focus solely on her music career. The announcement comes just six months after Lovato had a nervous breakdown and checked herself into a rehab center in Illinois.

Speaking to PEOPLE the 18-year-old said:

“It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music,” while adding, “It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on. I don’t think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery.”

Lovato also told People:

“Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.”

Lovato has only helmed the children’s show since 2010 and Disney seems to be fully behind her decision to focus on her music career, releasing the following statement:

“We respect Demi’s decision to focus fulltime on her music and not immediately return to her acting career. She is a talented young woman and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity.”

Show producers had already been working on a way to change up the show should Lovato not return, it will now be renamed So Random! and will be turned into a sketch comedy show that will debut in June.

Disney in large part chose to support Lovato’s decision because she records her music under the Disney owned Hollywood Records.

Something terrible is happening on the Web and changing it into something that didn’t exist even a year ago.  This isn’t just about the entertainment industry trade groups trying to turn back the clock on their rapidly changing business, although it is a part of it, nor it is just about broadband providers trying to increase fees while giving us less service, or even mediocre service compared to competing nations.

What is happening is a steady encroachment of the US government to exert command and control of the Web, either directly or acting as strawman for the entertainment industry.

This isn’t an argument about net neutrality even though it is an integral part of what is being subverted by recent actions by the US government. What is happening is far more insidious than that, while at the same time our Web is being changed and challenged to the point that net neutrality becomes a secondary problem.

There has been two events in the past week or so that serve as signposts as to what is happening now and by all indications will continue to happen, with possibly an increased pace.

ICE acting like Mickey Mouse’s bodyguard

The first instance of events that should be raising alarm bells everywhere is the recent seizure of a large number of domains. I wrote about it when it first happened asking the question as to when ICE would go after Google. Since that post there has been others who have raised some very good points much like Mike Masnick at Techdirt when he writes

As we noted, in an earlier similar domain name seizure situation, Homeland Security announced the seizures from Disney’s headquarters — which should raise lots of eyebrows. As we said at the time, imagine any other government agency announcing a third party action that benefits a particular company from that company’s offices. For example, imagine the FTC announcing antitrust actions against Google from Microsoft’s offices. Wouldn’t people question the legitimacy of that?

So not only do we have due process being totally ignored by these government agencies but they openly admit that they are all intents and purposes acting as a police force for the entertainment industry. As Erik Barnett, assistant deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is quoted in Entertainment Weekly as saying this:

“In general, what we can say is, there are specific complaints from rights holders that these sites were infringing on copyrights,”

Barnett’s statements get even scarier when it comes to the whole problem with due process being ignored.

Homeland Security made its move after an undercover investigation that lasted about 90 days. The websites’ owners were given no advance notice that they were at risk. “I mean, when we’re conducting criminal investigations, we don’t notify criminals that you need to abate your criminal conduct or there’s going to be an enforcement action against you,” says Barnett.

The problem with this argument is that; using Barnett’s example, in criminal investigations nothing is seized while the investigation is under way. The seizures happen at the time of arrest of a person who has committed a crime and what is being seized is a byproduct of that crime, either directly or indirectly.

In the case of the seized domains no-one was arrested, no-one was charged with a crime and yet their property – said domain name – is seized.

The other thing that is really bothersome about this whole thing is that it was done without the knowledge of the hosting companies or the domain owners. All it took was ICE going to VeriSign and ICANN and politely request that all the offending domains be redirected to seizedservers.com.

To date no charges against the domain owners have been filed.

The U.S. pouts and web companies evict to make them happy again

While the above events had the government acting on behave of the entertainment business this second points to how the government is also trying to exert direct control of what is posted to the Web.

If you haven’t been hiding under a rock you will have heard of the uproar over the recent data dump of diplomatic cables by Wikileaks. The dump and subsequent coverage, especially by the mainstream press, has created a firestorm of controversy as well as Julian Assenge being charge, or going to be charge with espionage by the U.S. government.

However it seems that the U.S. Government is happy with just that, and I am sure that there are some who would like to see Assenge hung from the highest yardarm possible but it also turns out that the government, or rather Senator Joe Lieberman through the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which he chairs, put pressure on amazon to boot Wikileaks from their servers.

The reason Wikileaks was using the Amazon A3 cloud hosting service was because it was a good way to make sure the Wikileaks site would be able to stay up under the continuing DoS attack. This is Senator Lieberman’s statement regarding the move by Amazon to kick Wikileaks off (via ReadWriteWeb):

This morning Amazon informed my staff that it has ceased to host the Wikileaks website. I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on Wikileaks’ previous publication of classified material. The company’s decision to cut off Wikileaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies Wikileaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material. I call on any other company or organization that is hosting Wikileaks to immediately terminate its relationship with them. Wikileaks’ illegal, outrageous, and reckless acts have compromised our national security and put lives at risk around the world. No responsible company – whether American or foreign – should assist Wikileaks in its efforts to disseminate these stolen materials. I will be asking Amazon about the extent of its relationship with Wikileaks and what it and other web service providers will do in the future to ensure that their services are not used to distribute stolen, classified information.

Now I will admit that my knee-jerk reaction to this news was the typical WTF! but after talking with a couple of friends whose opinions I respect I can understand the reasoning behind the move and can see how the whole censorship argument that some blogs are using in the hue and cry over this is really not relevant.

That said, and as one friend pointed out, how does the US Government think this is going to stop Wikileaks in the slightest. As it was the site was back up and running on a new European host within hours of being booted from Amazon. What this does though is make one ask what is the threshold one has to cross before a government agency can have you evicted from your host? At what point do you suddenly find yourself in the cross-hairs of a government who doesn’t like something you have said or written?

What does this say also of Amazon that they were willing to capitulate to pressure from the government and boot a site from their servers?

Also if the government is in the business of seizing domain names as they have already proven why don’t they seize the Wikileaks domain?

Where does this leave us?

While the whole Wikileaks things is a hot potato with valid points on both sides of the argument the more important thing to keep in mind here is the actions of the U.S. Government across a wide area of the Web. From seizing domains because entertainment companies claim they are being damaged; even though the government’s own GAO has called the so-called facts flaunted by the entertainment industry into serious doubt, to forcing American multi-national companies to deny services to people who haven’t been convicted of crime, the American government is trying to control what is happening on the Web.

Disney fans with smartphones are in luck today with news they can collect some sweet virtual Disneyabilia.

The mouse has bypassed the most popular geolocation game, Foursquare, in favor of a partnership with similar service Gowalla at Disney Parks and properties. Gowalla is far less widely used by the check-ins crowd, but the app does have less of a party vibe and more of an “explorer” feel. Gowalla also sports a more robust user interface, with more complex badge design that seems to be a good fit for the Imagineers at Disney.

Mashable points out how the selection of Gowalla is a Disney-princess like underdog tale with the protagonist overcoming the bigger badder rivals Foursquare and Facebook Places:

This is a major win for Gowalla; Disney is the world’s most-recognized entertainment brand, and any form of promotion by Disney should drive new users and extra attention to the location-based service. It’s struggled to keep a high profile in the face of stiff competition from Foursquare, which raised $20 million earlier this year, and Facebook, whose Places feature recently got a new deals platform.

I briefly used Gowalla, but the constant connection errors all but drove me off the service fairly rapidly. Still, the pretty badges and Disney connection could drive more users to the app. Given the frenzy over pins when Disney introduced them to parks, this really could be huge for Gowalla- the page on their site is already pretty active with check-ins.
