Polaroid on Tuesday rolled out the Polaroid SC1630, a digital “smart camera” powered by the Google Android system.

The SC1630 features a 16-megapixel camera with 3x optical camera and touchscreen display with built-in Wi-Fi however where it really shines is in it’s ability to connect to various social networks and geo-tag pictures on the fly.

Polaroid has also revealed video recording and the ability to auto-organize images in the camera based on date, location or faces.

While the camera operates much in the same way as standard point-and-click camera’s it’s the Android homescreen that offers a “dock” and “apps” options that really set it apart from other camera manufacturers. For example users can get directions, play games and download various other apps from the Android Market just as they would on their Android powered Smartphone.

According to Polaroid the camera comes set with 18 camera modes, smile and face detection for picture taking and a set of editing tools that can help users crop images, remove red-eye, resize photos directly from the camera and even use color correction. Editing, app navigation and other features are all performed from the devices 3.2-inch color touchscreen.

For photography fans who take a lot of photos the camera also supports micro-SD cards up to 32GB.

For even more connectivity the company offers Bluetooth transferring for images and videos along with an optional 3G data connection.

As promised here’s a hands on video of the phone from the team at AndroidCentral:

Pricing and a release date have not been announced however the Android powered camera is expected to arrive sometime in 2012.

Here’s a closer look at the Android powered touchscreen in action:

Does the Polaroid SC1630 digital point-and-shoot camera with Google Android pique your interest?

Fans of Polaroid cameras have a new reason to celebrate today after the company officially began selling the Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera which marries the convenience of instant polaroid pictures with a 14 megapixel digital camera.

The new offering uses a ZINK printer to offer on the fly digital 3×4″ prints and the system provides the ability to customize photos between snaps with sharing capabilities.

According to Polaroid President Scott W. Hardy:

“Polaroid photos connect people together in a way that is more personal than any photo tag, slideshow or comment box, yet digital images shape our stories.” Scott adds, “The Z340 brings these two worlds together in harmony by merging the excitement of the instant printing experience with the ease of digital photography and sharing. We’re very excited to share the wonders of instant photography with a new generation.”

Using the ZINK second-generation printer Polaroid is also promising smudge-proof, water-resistant coating.

The Polaroid Z340 is capable of printing 25 photos with 75 captures using a rechargeable lithium-ion battery while providing picture takers with a 2.7″ LCD screen that makes photo printing easy?

The camera also offers an on-board SD card for extra image storage.

The Polaroid Z340 is available for $299.99 from the likes of Polaroid.com, B&H, Adorama and Amazon.com. For instant prints users will pay $19.99 MSRP for 30 sheets of Polaroid ZINK 3×4″ paper.

Are you going to pick up a Polaroid Z340 for personal use? With digital technology and cheap nearly instant printing available at most one-hour photo locations these days it will be interesting to see how well this camera manages to sell.

Hello Kitty is about to celebrate her 35th birthday and in celebration of that milestone Casio has announced a new special edition Hello Kitty digital camera with 12.1MP alongside some other nice features that even discerning users will enjoy.

The special edition Casio EX-Z90 comes equipped with a 3x optical zoom, auto-detect and “Intelligent” autofocus and a design that will scare away any self respecting man from stealing your digital camera for a night on the town.

The unit is only available in Korea with a price of KRW 350,000 (approximately $300 USD), however knowing the hurdles Hello Kitty fans have taken to get their hands on other memorabilia not available in their regions we’ll assume this one will be spotted elsewhere at some point.

We’re pretty sure we didn’t see a military grade rating on the Canon EOS Rebel XT, but don’t tell Calin Leucuta that, rumor has it their phone fell from 3,000 feet and survived in rather decent condition.

Calin was apparently taking pictures from 3,000 feet when his camera mount broke off, sending his XT scrambling to the ground at a terminal velocity of approximately 100mph.

After a 15-20 minute search for the camera, Calin found his Rebel XT and aside from a crack to the body and a bit of what he calls “jerkiness” with the zoom lens, the camera appears to be in fine working condition.

Unfortunately there’s no video to prove the story, just some pictures of the unit after the fall. Although I once saw a DeWitt drill fall from nearly 20 stories and survive without a single problem, so it could have happened, you be the judge.
Casio has just introduced the Exilim G series, a slim, rugged version of their Casio Exilim digital cameras. They’re also claiming that the EX-G1, the first camera in the new line is the “thinnest toughened camera” with a thickness of just .78 inches.

The camera is rugged enough to survive a drop from 7 feet and its dustproof and waterproof up to 10 feet for a one hour period. The camera will also operate in temperatures as low as 14F (-10C), just long enough to take a last picture of yourself before you freeze to death.

The camera itself is fairly impressive with 12.1 megapixels and it features interval shooting which captures pictures at regular intervals as assigned by the user, an option that’s great for time lapse photography purposes. The camera also features a 3X optical zoom and can capture 480p movies, including an underwater scene preset option.

Users will also be able to store all their photos and movies on the devices MicroSDHC card slot.

The EX-G1 should be available before Christmas in both Red and Black color options for $300. [Electronista]

The Nikon VP650 isn’t your typical digital camera, sure it can snap digital pictures, display them on your computer and save them to memory, but it does something no other digicam to date can claim, it offers a built-in pico project for displaying the devices included pictures.

The pico option on the Vp650 can display images up to 8 inches x 12 inches which is a far cry from mainstream pico’s which offer much larger image outputs, but considering it’s the first of its kind it’s still a very cool and unique function.

According to SlashGear:

They also suggest that the LED pico-projector components are supplied by FoxLink, a Taiwanese company previously linked with putting pico components into mobile phones.

The camera has yet to be made official by Nikon, however reports are pointing to an official announcement this month with a release date sometime in September.

Digital cameras are sooo last week. At least that’s what Fujifilm is hoping with the official release of their new FinePix Real 3D W1 Camera. This very cool gadget offers 3D image processing that brings a whole new level of realism to the user experience.

The 3D W1 is based on the companies “FinePix Real 3D System” which is the first 3D imaging system which allows users to view 3D images and videos without the use of any type of 3D Glasses.

Users can view images on the included 8 inch 3D screen, while also watching 3D movies which can be taken directly from the device.

2D users shouldn’t feel left out however as the device also features traditional digital stills and videos for users who simple can’t let go of standard image output.

Digital prints will also be available via a special service due to the complex nature of printing digital prints. According to Adrian Clarke, Director of Digital Imaging “Fujifilm will be launching a print service to the purchasers of the 3-D camera as a direct service from Fujifilm because of the newness and complexity of the print system”

We don’t know how much we really “need” a 3D print system estimated to cost around $600 (September 2009 release) but we definitely know how much we want one.
Okay, this is going to be interesting to watch and see what kind of blowback Panasonic is going to get over this. As of your next firmware update for your Panasonic digital still camera you won’t be able to use third party battery packs. From the press release

Panasonic Digital Still Cameras now include a technology that can identify a genuine Panasonic battery. For the protection of our customers Panasonic developed this technology after it was discovered that some aftermarket 3rd party batteries do not meet the rigid safety standards Panasonic uses.

Some of these aftermarket batteries are not equipped with internal protective devices to guard against overcharging, internal heating and short circuit. If these aftermarket battery packs were used, it could lead to an accident causing damage to your camera or personal injury.

Panasonic’s Digital Camera firmware has been updated on this website to detect these aftermarket 3rd party batteries so such serious safety issues can be avoided.

[ Warning ]
After this firmware update your Panasonic Digital Camera cannot be operated by 3rd party batteries (non genuine Panasonic batteries).
